Vigil in 2012: Wii U "has been on par with what we have with the current generation"

Perhaps not enough as compared to other developers. They are porting a PS3/360 game or at best developing a Wii U version of a game where the lead sku is likely the 360 version. No new assets. No new anything. The controller will likely only be inventory management and maybe streaming. Now compare that with other developers that are making new games/Ips for release on the Wii U. Maybe they'll be multiplatform but it's likely something new might have the Wii U as the lead sku. Those should be used to determine the power of the system. I expect those developers to have the latest dev kits and to get the most help from Nintendo during development.

Still those with the most information and understanding aren't talking at all. In the end I expect no mulitplatform game at launch to look any better then the PS3/360 versions. Even after that many developers can do straight ports and not bother enhancing the games at all for the Wii U. I expect some will no matter what. That doesn't mean the Wii U is simply on par with the PS3/360. The very fact it has to stream the game to the controller is evidence of that.

The bolded is just a silly, ridiculous statement. Hell, Darksiders II was highlighted in the Nintendo E3 conference from last year. There's no reason why Vigil would not know as much as the other guys. They clearly have the dev kits/specs and are creating a high-profile launch game.

Yep, not seeing the surprise. People have been rising WiiU expectacions periodically.. poor graphics whores wanting to find something to be amazed with a company that thinks graphics and technology are not important in the medium.

I'm getting ready for Nintendogs HD, now with tesselated dog crap!

You will go far here.

What about the Zelda demo couldn't be accomplished on the 360?

20gm5c.gif

The lighting on the underside of the spider, the texture sizes, the self shadowing, other shader model 4.0+ effects, it's also running 720p @ 30fps, and on the screen as well, none of the lighting is prebaked, as proven by being able to change the scene instantly from night to day.

Those consoles are from the same generation, its nor surprising for the consoles to be "on par".
Dreamcast was definitely in a different generation than from ps1/n64/saturn.
People are expecting consoles from two generations to be on par this time around. Makes no sense.
It happened before (Wii>Xbox), why is it so inconceivable that it'll happen again?

Again, the main issue the Wii was its archaic and exotic GPU architecture. Had they chosen the same power but now used on a modern GPU things would have gone on a different direction. Think on mobile GPUs, that what we would have gotten.

Now, there's zero chance that that will be repeated with Wii U. On the worst case, we are getting a Dx10.1 GPU, which is feature wise a gen ahead of Ps3's RSX.

Don't see anything here that the X360 or the PS3 couldn't handle.

lulz, show me anyone that said that.

As for the tech demos, here's a PS360 tech demo, do you know any game on those consoles that look that good?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cuXgRVMvZ0

That is Tri-Ace's NEW engine, they actually have that running in real time and could potentially make an entire game that looks that good on the systems, this demo btw is where I expect Wii U's graphics to fall in, except more actors on screen and high res textures... To me that is enough for the next 5 years, I'd be happy with it.

Still, overreactions in this thread are unbelievable.
There are even people blaming the developers and crying about how they aren't going to buy their game.

It really doesn't take a "troll" to remark the hilarious ridiculousness of the whole thing.

I'm concerned about the specs Wii U just because I don't want to live the situation of Wii again and it's lack of multiplatform third party games.

Of course we have to see how are the new Microsoft and Sony consoles, but I'm worried if Nintendo won't make Wii U enough powerful to guarantee third party titles. Nintendo has enough first party games to keep me happy for ages, but it looked that with Wii U they wanted to "recover" the hardcore gamers.

If Wii U cannot run the games of 2013-2014...

I could be wrong but I remember a couple of the more tech-savvy guys here mention that the lighting was indeed pre-baked. Quite a long time ago.

Besides the lighting, I'm not seeing anything different that couldn't be done on ps360. Especially since it has no AA.

The Zelda demo is very nice for 2011, no one's going to argue about that. It's just that this is nothing more than an impressive, current gen looking game.

Hell, I can give you examples of XBOX vs PS2 games that the difference is a lot bigger.

Would be very interested to see who, lol the fairy flying around link alone would be a pretty amazing prebake, did they think the bird demo had prebaked lighting too?

It'll probably be the 3DS scenario all over again. It'll come close to release and it will be impressive, visuals will be impressive, and people will be excited and pleased. Then the competition will release (as Vita did) and completely overshadow their tech, leaving Nintendo behind in terms of graphics quality.

That' s all it means though, it doesn't mean that games will be ugly or that the system won't be able to compete.

If you had any interest in 3rd party games form this gen, why didn't you build a gaming pc or get a ps3/360? You can't play multiplatform games unless it's on a Nintendo platform?

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Seems like a pretty off handed remark that mostly shows they're not gonna do any meaningful work to improve the graphics on Wii U, regardless of its capabilities (like anyone expected a portjob to have redone textures, models, etc, lol, might as well be spending on another multi platform game instead of a remake of an unreleased one) but hey, why let that stop you?
When we asked Bonstead if he thought it was possible that the Wii U version of Darksiders II would be the best version of the game, he said, "Yeah, just because the hardware is more powerful and it will have some extra features that I think will actually be useful to people playing the game. With it’s controller, [the Wii U version of Darksiders II] might be the best version of the game."

So when last year when Vigil said it was more powerful no one cared

Now when they contradict themselves and say it sucks everyone believes them.

I'm just waiting for E3. I'm not trusting anyone.

You could just buy another console(or PC) and get all the games you want. What's the problem?
It's been the same the last 3 generations.

This really doesn't tell anything, on par could mean just the version of the game they're making is with the other hardware versions. Honestly though, if they could somehow get this out at a $300 price point with some version of the system, it would be a good tradeoff from having a stronger console. Of course, most won't feel that way, but I don't want to spend $400 or $500 on a fucking system. Hopefully if it's weak, that means tradeoffs in pricing.

Is that really what you got out of this statement? Have you read the thread at all?

Based on what I understand, the, you know, the resolution and textures and polycounts and all that stuff

I hope Nintendo at least put some sort of doohickey in there so there aren't any of those stair-steppy thingies

Nintendo loves to cash in on old hardware, this isn't news. The better question is why buy it at all? Would you rather have a Wii U with Mario 11 or a PS360 with a game library approaching a 1000 games? The sooner people give up nonsensical mascots from the 80s the better.

Yeah because that's the only reason it sells. Because it's a mascot.

Signed, the 5,000 mascot titles in the mid 90's that didn't succeed.

Man, not even trying to be subtle. I guess this is what you get when threads like this are started by mods. Open season and all that.

Spec wise 3DS is a huge increase over PSP. Even just memory alone (96MB vs 24MB game data), nevermind the significantly more capable GPU and versatible CPUs. With 3DS the problem is it needing to double render everything for 3D, which takes a toll on resources.
How exactly is the 3DS CPU significantly more versatile than the PSP CPU? I remember programming the Allegrex VFPU, and it's one of the most versatile vector instruction sets I've ever used. I'd also contest your idea of what constitutes a "huge increase", especially after 6 years, but eh, what's the point.

The lighting on the underside of the spider, the texture sizes, the self shadowing, other shader model 4.0+ effects, it's also running 720p @ 30fps, and on the screen as well, none of the lighting is prebaked, as proven by being able to change the scene instantly from night to day.
Please tell me more about these "shader model 4.0+ effects" you were able to discern from this video that could not be accomplished on shader model 3.0 hardware.

I think more "mental gymnastics" are required to come up with a reason why it couldn't be done.

This is exactly what is going to happen, even the most bias Nintendo fans in the speculation thread understand this, it just doesn't really matter once you get to a certain level of graphics, people play the console games even though the pc ports look far better.

To play Nintendo's first party games? Believe it or not, there are people who like Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong

People who think that the Zelda demo isn't a big leap over current gen console games are going to be in for a rude awakening when they see what typical PSQuadruple and Xbox 361 games look like.

Nintendo always keeps an eye to profits. Considering their situations, it's way obvious that their hardware will be adjusted such that they can make profits from day-1.

I got from that that hey have no technical issue with porting the Wii based on the kit they've got. To him it wuldn't matter if it's more powerful or not unless they are upgrading which they clearly are not and don't need to.

Still waiting for something more concrete.

As others have mentioned, aside from the lighting, the Zelda demo doesn't particularly impress upon one a generational leap - unless we're to expect 720p30 no AA as standard next gen.

I'm not a technical person, mind you. I'm not sure how one determines the sizes of the texture assets from what we've seen. Nor do I know of what exact effects you're referring to.

But from a purely visual perspective, it doesn't "look" like it couldn't be achieved to reasonable fidelity on the PS360.

They're not saying that it sucks, they said it was on par with current hardware. Everyone knows it's going to be more powerful than current gen, that's not the point of contention here - it's by how much, and this latest statement sheds some light on that.

Like the 3DS price drop..

In the end its the software that matters, they're not gonna care if they make less/lose on hardware if it means software sales will make up for it.

I'm pretty sure that could be done on PS360 using Cryengine.
Considering your tag and your avatar, I'm not surprised you believe that.
