This is the actual job posting yes? http://jobs.gamasutra.com/jobseekerx/viewjobrss.asp?cjid=29290&accountno=288

"Modeling 3D geometry" would imply that its not a side scroller or 2D game I would imagine....? I would like to know exactly what they mean by hand painted textures though.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. This does imply one of their games isn't going to strictly use 2D assets but Retro has yet to do such a game anyway. 3D geometry is such a vague term it could mean anything but that doesn't leave out the game being a side scroller because even DKCR is a 3D game that uses "3D geometry".

Yeah, definitely not completely 2D based on that. Could be a sidescroller like DKCR though. I would take hand-painted textures to mean that they can create the textures from scratch, ie, not from manipulating a photo.

Just doesn't feel like Mario, maybe I just don't like Yoshi.

Well YI is its own series with its own take on the platform genre. Longer, more in-depth levels for starters. Greater challenge. Storybook aesthetics. A projectile attack. Etc.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Just doesn't feel like it.

Are you talking about Yoshi's Story?

You know, Miyamoto/Aonuma wanted Skyward Sword to look like a painting.

Retro doing a HD version of Skyward Sword? :p

Painted textures doesn't mean it's going to be cartoony or not realistic. The style wouldn't determine if something was hand painted or not. Sounds to me like they just want really good quality texture artists, and not some one whose just going to slightly mod a photo and call it a day.

"Retro wants these artists to have talant for hand painted textures"

Just means they need artists who aren't 100% reliant on photo-sourcing for textures.

One of the greatest gifts the internet has given the world is the ability to see that other people share the same feelings and ideas as you.

*tear*

Count me in the DKR fan club! A masterpiece IMO, yeah it didn't age so well playing it now, but DAMN did I adore every minute of the game when I was younger! :D

Rare sadly owns every character sans the Kongs and Krunch, I'm still fucking bitter about Taj not being a DK character even after being in the Donkey Kong Racing trailer...

That was an awesome two-andtwo theory. Makes a lot of sense, hope it happens! And MAYBE Krunch will finally be back as an official DK character like he's IP rights say? Baffles me that he's never been in a sport game or any of the kart games, not even in Barrel Blast! Yo Nintendo, you KNOW you own him right?

Taj is my #1 pick for any of the DKR characters to come to the Nintendo side, Banjo and Conker are MS-owned so good luck with that. :( I liked the big guy and feel that he'd make a wonderful guide character in the series like he was in DKR.

Could just mean they want their designers working with more creativity and being less photo-texture reliant.

Orrrrr, they're working on a Zelda/Yoshi's Island title. Ahoohohoum.

Y'know, Retro could be making more than one game. One under the guidance of EAD (since they liked Retro's involvement with Mario Kart so much, it's a possibility!) and another under the normal guy whose name I forgot.

Would be pretty awesome.

Holy shi...we're talking Yoshi's Island now? Please, I gotta sit down. What an amazing launch window game that would be. And perfect in that it's still "Mario" but wouldn't be at all redundant even with the all the other Mario titles coming out.

Exactly. Also, hand painted textures aren't exclusive to cartoony o non realistic games.

Their Sheik game is being put into the Skyward Sword continuity.

Now a spin off starring SS Impa. Also with Groose. And Tingle. You know you want it.

Nintendo needs to keep developing Retro as well as other Western talents. It's almost like having a small version of Rare around, but Nintendo needs to expand from there to as many that are willing to accept Nintendo's guidance.

Well, they kind of expanded their Western second party in this gen with Monster Games, Next Level, etc. But I certainly wouldn't mind if they go even further, especially when it comes to supporting Retro in a way so we don't have to wait years for their next game each time.

Yoshi's Island by Retro sounds pretty good to me. Count me in!

It won't be Yoshi's Island, right?

I dream of the day of a Yoshi's Island made by Good-Feel.
While not a bad game, Artoon's Yoshi's Island was full of bad design decisions and the sprite work and music was so disappointing.

I can't be excited for a Yoshi's Island after YI DS :( Biggest Nintendo disappointment ever.

As long as a new one actually did something more and better, I wouldn't mind a new game. But I don't want it to be just "pretty" either. I want a game that actually put me through my paces a bit, like the original Yoshi's Island did.

I think Nintendo basically owns Monster now. They've been giving Monster mid-scale titles for a few years now.

Yoshi's Island
Yoshi's Story
Yoshi's Island DS

Seems like its own series to me. Just like Wario Land.

Assassins Creed 2
Assassins Creed Brotherhood
Assassims Creed Revelations

Bahahahaha~

Please don't get me excited about the thought of Retro Studios tackling Yoshi's Island with its signature beautifully vibrant pastel-like art style. Damn it. Too late. Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy!

Impa is definitely the best character to have a spin-off IMO (other than the obvious Gannondorf). Still, after seeing what Retro did with DKC, Yoshi's Island Wii U would be awesome. The original was my favorite Mario game of all time.

Wow all the possibilities being thrown around are... exciting to say the least

My most wanted would be Yoshi's Island. Not DKCR2 nor Zelda cause we've had good games in those franchises not long. But YI would be sweet!!

The one i'd like the least would be Star Fox, but i'm sure they'd do a good job with it as well.

How likely is it that they make their own IP though?? Or a new IP actually, instead of working in existing franchises.

Maybe they could make an FPS to lure in that crowd, i mean, Rare back in the day made Goldeneye and PD.

I wouldn't like an FPS too much though i'm not that fond of that genre D:

I don't think YI would be something "everyone wants them to work on", unfortunately.

It's probably either a new DK game or a new Metroid game. If not one of those two, then maybe a fresh take on an existing franchise or something made to specifically appeal to western audiences

I'm thinking Eternal Darkness 2 collab with Silicon Knights.

Why would Retro need to collaborate with SK on ED2? They are 2 separate developers capable of working on 2 separate games (with supervision from Kensuke Tennabe of SPD 3, of course.) I doubt Nintendo is going to tie up 2 developers, including one of their most talented, working on what will be a sequel to a niche game.
