Good villains should be iconic, and powerful, to suit this type of game best. Not a huge variety of enemies to choose from in gaming, but Sephiroth is definitely one of them

The stages of this game look awful. The LBP one looks boring and the Jak one looks generic as hell.

One thing SSB got right is how visually interesting every stage is. The only stage that looks good so far is the Hades one.

They've got so much creative license with these stages and we are simply seeing a clusterfuck of mismashes. Give me something that looks good, and I want plenty of variety.

Oh I disagree. I mean, like everyone else, I think they could do with adding a bit more colour to the game. But other than that I think the stages are cool and packed with personality. The Jak stage has the fish from the original game -- it also has Hot Shots Golf characters using it as a driving range. And the LittleBigPlanet one constructs itself around you as you play. Both seem like fantastic concepts to me, with lots of visually interesting things happen.

It's just the soft, washed out look that's putting me off a touch. Like I said a few pages back though, I'm sure this is something that could be tweaked fairly easily before release. Hopefully they're paying attention to the feedback and are already working on this.

??? The stages aren't that big. Sandover Village is like 1/3 the size of New Pork City.

yeah, I think the stages are way too small too. in all the stages, you felt very boxed in and not a lot of room to maneuver. all the stages are in similar size too so I don't think there'll be variable stage size. that's just the size they're going for. probably to make the action keep going and prevent player running around.

match time seems short too, only 3 minutes. although that do felt right for the small stages they have. longer than that, you'll probably felt the repetition because you'll be stuck in that area longer.

I've never played a Killzone game, because I tend to avoid first-person shooters set in a predominantly brown/grey encrusted world that looks about as visually appealing as a plate of raw sewage seasoned with some cinnamon and nutmeg...

BUT

...that Radec fellow looks the part.

So..why not 7 players at once? (PS3 support 7 players/DS3s) sure it will be just completely chaotic but still they should do it..

Okay, now that the people who are not interested in this game have left this thread, I think I should chip in with my own thoughts about the characters in this game and how they compare to the characters is Smash Bros.

Let’s get this out of the way, the Nintendo roster is better. They have more popular and iconic characters. There is no disputing that. Sony do not have the characters to compete with Mario or Pikachu.

However, anyone suggesting that PlayStation characters somehow do not deserve a game of their own is utterly and completely wrong. The PlayStation characters are more than competent enough to appear in their own game. A lot of people on the internet have tried extremely hard to somehow devalue the quantity and quality of PlayStation characters. PlayStation has now spanned three console generations, and in that time, they have produced many characters. There is no doubting that they have relied heavily on third party characters, but they have also produced many of their own.

I mean, as strong as the Smash Bros line-up is, there is one clear advantage that the Sony line-up can have over it: A better variety of Western and Japanese characters. Smash Bros has a lot of Japanese characters, but sometimes it’s good to mix it up a little by having a Nathan Drake, Kratos or even a Jak.

I, for one, am glad this game exists.

He's a certified badass, KZ2 spoilers:
he kills the main protag in KZ1 like nothing (video) and in defeat he killed himself instead of being prisoned by the ISA.

It's pretty ironic that they introduced characters like Colonel Radec (scifi nazi officer), Kratos (murderous anti-hero) and Sweet tooth (psychopathic killer clown) in a family game.

Its all part of the plan, kids love these kind of character, they find it cool or edgy or something. So after seeing how cool and badass kratos and radec are, they'll go out and buy their game. :)

By what measurement? By total sales of franchises or what is iconic? What is iconic doesn't necessarily mean compelling to each individual.

In the latest Smash Bros. game I'm hard pressed to find 6 characters I like.
And from the initial reveal I like and can see myself playing 3 out of 6 characters already.

So the arithmetic goes: 3 out of 6 characters I think are cool in Sony's game.
I think 5 out of 36 characters are cool in Nintendo's game. (Link, Samus, Snake, Captain Falcon, Marth)

Sony must fuck the rest up quite badly to not come out ahead for me personally.

We agree that Sony should do whatever they want and they have enough characters to fill a game.

Yes, but generally speaking something iconic can be quite safely be labeled as "compelling".
Fair enough. My personal Nintendo favorites I've listed are not the ones that come from the best selling games or are the most iconic ones.

The only exception is probably Link.

Can't wait until some 8 year old gets his hands on GoW3 after maining Kratos in Battle Royale haha.

and maybe Snake's supers could be Lv 1=Patriot, Lv 2 Railgun, Lv 3 something Metal Gear

That would be pretty cool actually.

Well I had wanted a Socom character as DLC at least but after watching more of Radec I just cant think of a unique fighting style for them, also WTH would their supers be.

as for Nathan Drake I think his
[ ] = x1 punch x2 punch x3 knee x4 assault rifle baseball swing
/\ = close range AK spray
O = distance pistol shot

and Super lv 1 or 2 will be the Hammer

If Gabe Logan is in his focus should be rolls and his old taser

and maybe Snake's supers could be Lv 1=Patriot, Lv 2 Railgun, Lv 3 something Metal Gear

Actually Visari and Radec are very good.

They are from Killzone games.

The characters they showed from Killzone is a plain Helghast (which are the villians not the Heroes). We still need to know who will be the ISA.

If will be Thrid party characters I want Aya Brea. Parasite Eve it's a Sony related franchise and today it's still exclusive to sony consoles PSX/PSP.
Please sony put her on this game:

Please let's not go down this route again. At the end of the day, I don't think it matters as much as people think. If the game is genuinely cool and well marketed, it'll do well for itself. (And, as others have alluded, might even drive casual players towards brands they've not even heard of.)

For the fans -- the people posting on GAF -- SuperBot has proved that its willing to dip extremely deeply into PlayStation lore. And that's what I wanted.

I really enjoyed Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, but I was disappointed it didn't go further. This game doesn't appear to be missing that. So I'm happy.

These are the characters that I at least want in the game:

- Snake (no-brainer)
- Any Tekken character (level 3 super: everyone gets juggled 10 times and dies)
- Dante, but Capcom said there weren't plans so eeh
- Any FF character that will attract the most fans so it'll sell more
- Kiryu (not likely ._. It's strange because unlike MGS, Tekken and FF, he never appeared on anything non-Sony.)

They can go all out with stages and music for all I care. Let's cross our fingers that the gameplay will be deep and varied enough, at least better than that Turtles Smash Up thing. That bored me within an hour. :|

I am pretty sure they will make more games so they won't burn Cloud now.

Dude, they would be fucking stupid not to put in Cloud. The last thing they want to do is leave Cloud for a sequel. They want as many people as possible to check this game out, and Cloud would do that. Save Sephiroth for the sequel.

Also, for the cover (in America at least), Cloud facing off versus Kratos.

If that doesn't sell an extra 500k copies, then fuck it, nothing will, lol.

I'm pretty sure they dropped support for that before launch. If you look at the back of each controller you'll see there are only 4 lights.

Nope, it supports 7 controllers. That's why you can have 6 person local co-op on the PS3 version of the X-Men Arcade game, and not on the 360 version.

Edit: Multiple lights on the controller light up when you're numbers 5-7.

Player5 - Light 1 + 2

I think you meant "shameful".

Er, no. I'm quite sure I meant cool.

Kirby is a fun character to play with, and I would like to see a character similar to Kirby in PS All Stars.

It seems like you still have a problem swallowing that this game is copying a great Nintendo exclusive. Don't worry, it'll get less painful and you'll learn to deal with it.

Oh really, didn't know that. I always thought they'd dropped it.

7 is a weird number though...

It's a limitation of bluetooth. Any one band can only support 8 devices, including the host device.

i hope so, unfortunately the early character and stage reveal indicate this game shaping up to be dominated by sony western franchise. the like of drake, cole, jak, ratchet are pretty much almost certainly in. for now it is hard to imagine there will be a lot of japanese character in this.

One thing that worries me about the gameplay is the whole super meter - KO - point system. Has anyone else read or seen anything more about this somewhere on the internets? I for one want this to have the potential to be a competitive fighter and I see this whole super meter - KO system as a setback. If no one has HP and everyone has crazy powerful supers (that usually kill everyone) how can that be balanced, aside from not being able to attain level 3 supers for a decent to possibly long period of time.

I guess I'm just nit picking and in reality it's just the opposite of a health bar, minus the health bar really, or simply just a fighting game with a special bar and no health bar, but to a long time fighting game fan it just hurts my head to comprehend that concept sticking and helping this be a deep and competitive game. There was a mention of actual move sets on podcast beyond (from IGN) so that'll make things interesting if there are intricate moves aside from simple attack combinations. Still, I have a nagging worry about this whole super - KO system..

Given how Nintendo is in Japan and almost exclusively employs Japanese developers (if not developing themselves), it's uhm... obvious there's mostly "Japanese characters"?
I mean, I am not quite certain what you define as "Japanese character" or "Western character"; all of the Smash Bros. roster have been originally created in Japan, except for DK's re-design that came with Rare's DKC series.

This reminds me of when Forza came out and GT fans were calling it a clone of GT4, seriously people, can't someone make a game in the same Genre without being called a clone of the most popular game in that genre.

Exactly.

If anything, blame other developers and publishers for failing to create more games in the style of Smash Bros.

Thing is, Sony have already pinched the four primary colours scheme from Super Smash Bros. With seven players that means Sony will steal yet another 3 colours from some other highly reputed source. Does their villainy know no bounds?!

Reminds me of Saints Row as well. GTA fans we're merciless. But look how both franchises are widely accepted now.

Yes, thanks for spelling that out.

You seem confused. Why?

Sony have western and Japanese studios. Nintendo have great characters but Sony have Nathan Drake.

It's weird and different for sure. But so was the Smash Bros. percentage/stage knock-out system back in 1999. I don't think anyone really knew how that was gonna work from a competitive standpoint before we really played it for a bit, but it turned out to actually work quite well.

I'm not gonna claim to know whether this system will work out or not, but I'm very interested to see it in play for a bit. I can see how it could work, and I could see how it could be a total failure. I think a lot of it comes down to how they balance the super moves and meter gain.

I will say, these guys have been working on it for over two years, and it sounds like they are considering the competitive aspect of it. They've probably spent plenty of time considering the exact same potential issues people keep bringing up. They've probably also play-tested the game enough to be pretty confident in the system. Of course, as we all know, things within a play-testing environment are very different from things after release, so who knows if it'll hold up once it gets out to the public. But I'm sure they didn't just slap that system in there with no consideration for how it'll affect the actual fighting system.

Lol

@totobeni: it wouldn't work BC it would break the 60 frames per second and it would be too chaotic. It would break the SSB formula too. That's why.
