The Wii Remote changed.

Hardly. The general button layout remained essentially the same, with only minor spacing tweaks:

I'm pretty questionable about motion controls still aside from select games, but the Wii-mote + Nunchunk combo is so GODLIKE. That might be my favorite Nintendo control scheme ever. I love being able to move around with that thing, I love the feel of the buttons, the analog stick, all that shit. The only real things I don't like is the -/+ buttons aren't the best for me. I still don't have a very good feel for them whenever I need them, and God help me if they require the 1/2 buttons.

Remember the original concept had sticks over pads.

They should have stuck with it :p.

Ahhh, this shit takes me back to 2000-2001, when everyone shat all over the GameCube controller. Seems we will never learn the mistakes of the past, will we?

And everyone please stop talking about the slider pads. I don't want to have to repost the same thing I do every time this is brought up, but I will when provoked.

Unfortunately for Nintendo I don't live in fantasy land where I assume all their stuff is wonderful and works brilliantly. I haven't held the controller, so I don't know how it feels. But I have never, not once, used a pad that is as satisfying as an analogue stick. So there's their first mistake. The pads don't have any visible grip, just like the 3DS pad, and I hate that. So there's mistake number 2. Lastly, the buttons look weirdly out of place. Impossible to truly judge until I play it, but hardly appealing.

Here's what Nintendo can do: they can produce a product that feels damn great to use, when I use it. Until then I can only go off how it looks and the reports I hear.

But this is all compounded by my bitterness over the Wii U Pad taking centre stage over the awesome and superior Wii Remote + Nunchuck. Split controller design + IR, enhanced with motion control, was my vision of the future for the Wii U. Because it works, is comfortable, has unique qualities, and feels damn good to use.

And I don't care how strongly Nintendo claim the Wii U is backwards compatible with the controllers. The Wii U pad is obviously the centrepiece, and thus the Wii Remote will always be secondary. Hopefully Nintendo prove me wrong big time, because I'm honestly going to miss the Wii remote.

no, i mean the slider pads have this concave design, like the 3ds's slider pads, but the edges of them have this additional grip (the same sort of thing that's on the nunchuck analog stick). it makes the slider pads feel like they have sharp edges.

I never noticed them feeling sharp. Just the lack of grip.

well you haven't played the wii u controller right?

wii u pads = 3ds pad with added nunchuck edge things. it makes the wii u pads feel sharp.

that's what i'm trying to say.

Oh.

Well that sucks too.

Those grips sound pretty important to me. I'm finding the 3DS and Vita both uncomfortable to my hands these days, even though the old NES controller didn't have them, and I never had difficulty there.

Maybe it's misguided, but I have faith those slide pads for Wii U will be much superior to the 3DS pad, and essentially on par with other controllers. They look a lot different to me than the 3DS slider, to be honest.

The button layout, I'm torn on. The small diamond layout under the left slider seems awkward to me, but so does having the slider underneath the buttons. I know hands-on impressions have been favorable, so hopefully it is comfortable. I might be the only one (and I know there was a lot of hate for it 10 years ago) but I wish they'd go back to the GCN layout. Big A Button, bean shaped X and Y and the B button underneath A. Loved that layout.

The only aspect of the Wii U controller that is unforgivable to me is no Analog triggers. I HATE that, and I'm hoping they made the tweak. I know there were rumors in a previous speculation thread that they might have been changed. Also, ZL and ZR are awful names. Would it kill them to just call it R Trigger and L Trigger. I've always felt Miyamoto or some exec at Nintendo loves having a Z button, so they always find a way to stick it on the controller.

Maybe it will be like the GameCube era, where they loaned their characters to certain games like Link in Soul Calibur II or Mario, Peach and Luigi in NBA Street and I want to say SSX.

I definitely expect that to happen. But I still feel that DLC needs to be part of it (unless they can land full exclusives). Interestingly, the contract that MS has with CoD expires this year. Would Nintendo step up to the plate for that?

You're certainly right the opportunities haven't been there. I just have an inkling any exclusive content will have to do with the controller functionality not some substantial exclusive DLC or timed exclusive DLC. The functionality will be nice, but the controller is the selling feature of the console, not the graphics like 360 or PS3. Developers should utilize it especially since the screen will be easier to work with than waggle.

I just question how much of an effort third party developers will put into the controllers. I think third party devs tend to be interested in doing the bare minimum with stuff like that unless they're making exclusive titles. Kojima and CD's comments kind of back that up. They talked about how they'd prefer to build games around the controller instead of just porting stuff and figuring out how to implement unique features. There's clearly a lot of potential in the controller, but I don't hold out much hope for third party devs to really show what's possible.

If Nintendo really is in bed with EA I could potentially see something big come out of that. Ubisoft is also a possibility but I think it will be more likely a repeat of their Wii and 3DS support: dump a lot off at launch and dribble out games afterward. So many small developers have been soured from WiiWare getting exclusives from them will be an uphill battle. Apparently they were very cooperative and friendly to get people on board but lost the goodwill from bad business decisions (size limit, submission process, payment, etc.). Hopefully for them they haven't burned too many bridges.

The EA situation is interesting. Sony has a very tight relationship with them and they've been securing exclusive content (and some times full games) for several years now. I'm not sure how that's going to play out. I guess we'll know after Sony's conference. If they don't announce any exclusives from EA then that would be a real indication that Nintendo going to have some content to announce from EA at their conference.

I hope Nintendo realizes how important exclusive EA Sports content could be for Wii U in the US. There are so many obvious additions for sports games that could A) only be done on Wii U and B) Would have huge "main stream/casual/dude bro" appeal.

I have previously suggested a "Play Book" app for Madden, where you can customize your playbook and design and practice plays on the DRC without actually running Madden. When you next fire up the game, it syncs up all the playbook customization.

If these slider pads are anything like the 3DS', I'll be quite relieved. I was quite unhappy with the change to these, but they turned out just fine.

edit: in my fantasy world, the right side's buttons would be changed to a GameCube button layout.

Even the slight shift of the buttons to the inner part of the controller looks more comfortable.

What could have been :(.

To be fair, the DRC will most likely change in some fashion at E3. (As some with knowledge have hinted here). While I don't think sliders are going away, it's reasonable to expect some layout tweaks.

I'm hoping for quite a few changes to the controller at E3. Better button layout, analog sticks and analog triggers. It's been a year, and I still can't stand the 3DS circle pad.

I don't think its going to happen, though. The most we can hope for is classic controller or Wiimote/chuk support.

The thing I want most is for the triggers to be analog. Analog gas and brake in racing games is pretty much a must. This controller is pretty much a Swiss army knife of controllers, so it would make no sense to not have them.

Yea, the original design seems superior. I think that's the first time I've ever seen a Nintendo concept controller actually take a step backwards in design. It's like bizarro Ninty designed it.

I'm gonna miss BIG ASS A BUTTON. All three of my Nintendo consoles have had those, it's a staple for me starting with the N64

Radial button layout with giant, center WIN button from the Wavebird was easily the greatest button design ever conceived. I miss it so.

Well.. the IdeaMan says we haven't seen the final version. I'm wondering what this surprise change will be..

IIRC, he said the screen size may have shrunken slightly.

If EA really is serious about Wii U support then I hope Nintendo also realize how important it is to politely but firmly ask EA to please STOP giving their Nintendo Madden games the annoying cartoon/caricature look the last few Wii Maddens have had. Splits the fan base for no good reason other than a desperate attempt to court the Wii Sports crowd and is just a stupid idea all around.

I hope they've changed more than what he's hinting. Wish he were here to at least give us a hint.

it's honestly THE most annoying thing about the 3DS circle pads. I've already ranted about it in this thread on 3 different occasions so I'll stop there, but so annoying.

No need to stop ranting about them if they're a problem. My thumbs slipped off a few times already while playing games due to lack of grip. They better fix it with the redesign.

Still can't believe how sharp that touchscreen looks. So bright, so colourful.

I think the overall design doesn't look as sleek as it should. Probably in large part due to the sheer size of what surrounds the screen. That space is probably essential for comfortable play, but it would likely look 1000x better in black. Added benefit of no weird monobrow for the camera.

Not having played it, I can't be certain about the slider pads. But I agree with others, I don't like the one the 3DS has. Missed a lot of jumps with Mario 3D Land trying to use it. It's still better than other portable alternatives, but the tablet doesn't have to worry about that kind of portability.

Seems like A/B/X/Y and the right pad should be inverted, but maybe not. It might be hard to use the analog and R trigger if it was placed too low. It also looks like A/B is identical in design to X/Y, when a cool subtle thing they've had since the SNES days is a subtle difference in feel (slightly concave/convex). I can't tell if the + pad and buttons are actually smaller than the classic controller or not, but hopefully not. Might just be an optical illusion 'cause the controller is so meaty.

Anyway, Nintendo, go black for the controller and console. It will look better and also help differentiate U as a new console.

Especially if you're playing any game where you have to use it a lot, like Ocarina of Time for example, or whatever. It's just impossible. Your thumb could be hundred percent dry and clean, but after a little while of using it it just becomes slippery.

So far I'm not a fan of circle pads. Maybe the Wii-U ones will be better, but as of now the idea sucks to me. Would rather have sticks (that preferably click), but I'll even take non slippery circle pads with good grip.

Egg-zack-lee.

Mmmmm.

Huh. The original design seems better in almost every single way that the two are different. Certainly making the controls not line up vertically would have been the dramatically better option. It's also nice that, while not necessary, the controller has two extra buttons that can be easily accessed with the right thumb without moving around the hands or contorting.

Any design that makes each button uniquely memorable gets a thumbs-up from me.

I can't recall how many times I died in SM3DL due to my thumb slipping off but it was really irritating.

I'm not a fan of them either and I've complained about the Wii U Pad using them in this thread and the previous one. If they do end up keeping the same pads, I'm hoping that third parties and Nintendo give multiple controller options for their games so that I would be able to use the CCPro instead of resorting to the uPad.

Mmmmm.

It would look more awesome if it were rounded instead of edgy like that.

Yeah, sports games are absolutely one of the genres that could really benefit from the controller. I think racing games would also be really interesting. The developers of Project Cars actually seem like they're taking it seriously by putting the wheel in the controller screen and allowing you to flip the buttons on those wheels for different car setting. That could be a big selling point for some sim fans that like racing games but don't like having to pull out a big racing wheel every time they want to play. It'll be interesting to see if Codemasters will implement something similar in F1 2012 or if they'll just do something bland like putting the course layout and track position on the bottom screen.

Yeah I have no idea why they changed the design. It looks like the screen got bigger though. I hope that wasn't what convinced them to change it to the current design...

I almost shed a tear when I saw the original design. Why aren't they going with it? :(

E3 is coming and I'm hoping Nintendo shows us a redesigned uPad.

speaking of which what are the chances of me getting a WiiU in BLACK at launch?

My 3DS is Black

Pretty slim imo. They said that white is the best color to go with if they want sales. I'm pretty sure it's why the 3DS wasn't selling great [/sarcasm]

But honestly I'm thinking they'll just go with plain white. I'd rather get a black or green one.
