I don't even have a cell phone. Never have. :p

My life: Get up and go to work in the morning. Come home at night. Hang with family on evenings and weekends. This lifestyle does not permit much of a social life or demand roaming communication. I've just never needed it.

About twice a year I wish I had one, such as PAX. My wife has a simple pre-paid one, and I may be activating a basic pre-paid T-Mobile for my own this year.

I refuse to deal on a contract basis with any of the major carriers, and I just don't value what I'd get from a cell very much. And I'm packing away, hard, for retirement; anything I give those bozos is adding time.

Oh yeah, you're wanting to retire by 50 or something, right?

T-mobile has a good 4g monthly deal. It is almost like contract service but no contract. Unlimited data/text and 100 minutes of talk for $30, but you also have to dish out for the actual device.
My wife currently buys 100-minute blocks, and that gets her through ~3-4 months at a time. I'll probably do the same; I'm thinking of getting one for PAX this year.

Yup, 50 is my goal, we're tracking to hit it; we saved 40% of our income last year. I have good reason to believe my quality of life is going to drop hard based on my family's medical history; I've had acute early onset rheumatoid arthritis for 10 years already and it's going downhill fast; the only reason I'm up is so my ibuprofen can kick in to take the edge off. The sooner I retire, the longer my mobile, free days will be.

Sorry for the derail. Had fun recording a podcast tonight. :D

I opted out of my cell contract about 2 years ago, never looked back. I got a straight talk phone for PAX, which came in handy for talking to my wife in the 343 parking lot all night. I haven't reactivated it since though...maybe it's because we're married.

Yeah, they are certainly not cheap in the long run, so if it's something that you don't reap the benefits from, it will save you money.

I can't imagine not using a cell phone though. I use it for everything, and to an extent people of my generation are expected to be able to be reached at any time or any place.

Of course, I just found that I have a voicemail from a guy at Microsoft User Research today who said he may have an opportunity for me that may or may not have been there for some time. Whoops. I gotta call in the morning.

Random thought, even my grandmother has and uses a cell phone lol.

That's what my father wanted. He blew right through that and is still working. Funny enough, now he's not really interesting in retiring anymore. He says it keeps his mind sharp and keeps him active.

It's especially funny considering I work at one of the most technologically advanced companies on the planet, and support the bleeding edge tech organization; I'm surrounded amazing tech and tech geeks. I'm like a dinosaur walking among them. :lol

I kind of want to do what my mom did late in life: go back to school. There's a lot I'd like to learn about, but perhaps not have a career in.

Man, I feel like a baby in this thread. I still live with my parents and don't start post-secondary until 2 days after PAX.

I remember when you guys used to talk about Halo. Those were the days.

I don't think I could work without my cell phone. Too much easy quick-reference stuff in the medical field to not value having it. Plus with being on call, etc, I kind of have to have it for that as well.

Funny the way that happens, my father is the same way. Has a cell phone, but not a smartphone, works at MS, people think he's crazy.

Surely you must be mistaken, that's not the HaloGAF way.

Yeah that's what it's become for me. It's so integrated in how I function on a daily basis. I think I read more email from my phone than from a computer at this point.

I barely have a cellphone, and in fact I just gave mine away, and it was a Tracfone that can only text. No web, no pics, no custom ringtones.

Funnily enough, I didn't have one for PAX 2007 but everyone found me that wanted to. Had one for 2008 and only one person I intended to meet up with.

Came back to PAX11 and took 3D pictures of the panorama pieces with a 3DS. I should get those up sometime. Phone still couldn't take pics :lol

Also, just got the good news that an old friend will be Enforcing again, so Halo Freeplay is on for PAX! I help run that when I'm at PAX so I hope to see you there.

I want an Iphone so bad, because a lot of the features are things I would actually use.

But it's not worth it until I have a career.

Firefight updates next week. I'm so excited. *squee*

NEP. That'll certainly be interesting.

Firefight is one thing I haven't really got into in Reach, perhaps this will change that.

Surely you must be mistaken, that's not the HaloGAF way.

You're right. I must be thinking of B.net. I suppose cell-phone ownership talk is preferable to heated BR spread or weapon bloom debates.

What I do at 3am in the morning.

ODST got shafted hard.

That's awesome. I didn't even know that existed when I was there last year.

Just rediscovered the joy of Griffball, until...
We got matched against a team of 5.
Their butt pal on our team would just kill us all at the start.
Their team then rushed to our side and just spawn killed us the entire game.
They care so much about their k/d spreads that they boost it in griffball.

The playlist is ruined for me now.

Yeah I havent entered that playlist since 2 of my teammates quit out and someone got 17 killionaires and several unfrigs on us.

That is unless there's going to be a jointed effort by HaloGAF to take it back. Swift, organized, and ruthless.
probably actually most likely drunk

Sheeeeit.

No way I'd do that with ODST's final levels consisting of tons of drones and a long highway death march. I've never thrown my controller in disgust but that right there is a perfect setup for it.

Those types of sections are why I always end up quitting two and a half hours into a level when attempting LASO runs. Actually... I just suck, and have very little patience.

Ok. I REALLY have to finish reading Cryptum. LTTP, but I'm on the last 10% according to my Kindle. Loving it so far, despite it's slowness.

It didn't happen last year, Halofest pretty much prevented that from occuring.

If you played Halo in a big LAN at either PAX 2007 (Halo 2) or 2008 (Halo 3), that was the Halo Freeplay that I was involved with, run by an enforcer. I wasn't there for 09 or 10 but I'm pretty sure he ran it those years too.

Best part of the 2007 one was it started a mini-drama between TTL and PAForums that quickly resolved itself :lol

I'll have to ask the Enforcerbro what the plans are due to the TU situation. For the 2008 one I brought my hard drive so we had access to all the map variants for disc maps and gametypes from LIVE that we wanted, and I was also able to save all the films from the LAN. It gets a bit more interesting now..

I look forward to it. Last year was my first PAX.

Best part is just sitting back and watching everyone have fun. And watching people that don't get that it's not serious shitsrealtime and not have fun and eventually leave.

I wish they'd bring back the options screen per-player not taking over the entire damn screen but residing in that player's quadrant again. It's annoying for people to switch their controls over when they all have to do it one at a time.

I just finished doing this with my gf. She is getting into the books now and has signed up to join gaf.

success_baby.jpg

GF and I just started. Trying to get her to like Halo, (she likes strong female characters) so we can play through 4 together. I successfully did this with Skyrim, despite her making fun of me the months leading up to it's release, now she plays more than I do.

We started Anniversary, though we only got half way through tPoA. I think we may do it starting with Reach, instead. Good idea. Not sure if I'll get her on GAF, though. I already created a monster when I introduced her to Reddit.

I played through the campaigns of Halo 3 and Halo Reach with my gf. She had never played an FPS before and was a very casual gamer (Occassional bits of the Sims or Pokemon).
She enjoyed them, both us getting a great kick out of when she'd be caught in a bunch of enemies and panic, throwing grenades and melee'ing frantically and just trying to run away so I could spawn/get to her.

Became much more of a "gamer", was super excited about Skyrim and played it a huge amount before heading off to Japan to teach English for a few months.

Gears 3 dedicated servers were soo good last time I played. BF3 has them too, you can even make your own from the 360 apparently. Come on Halo 4.
