You play games in Adobe RGB? I didn't know any games used color management. How do the colors look?

Yes I do. These aren't profiles, it's monitor presets from the monitor menu, so it effects the games. The colours look fantastic, really natural and deep without crushing any colours or being too vibrant. Been through a lot of monitors in my time and they always had some colour problems even after a lot of calibration but this monitor is just spot-on with the right preset. Obviously it can be improved with some further calibration. Although the difference between all the presets aren't that major outside of the glaring tints of "Warm", "Cool" and all that, as the base colours are good but some presets to give it that bit extra.

However this is a pretty high-end monitor used that a lot of professionals use, so presets and experiences might not be identical on lower IPS monitors.

Stop me Gaf.....I have 415 bucks worth of points on my card and im close to pulling the trigger on a 3770k with the Biostrar z77E4 MP, and 16 gigs of ram.

I already have an i7 930 with a 7970 and 12 gigs of ram but damn its so hard to resist the new shiny hotness :/

Bit of a waste, unless you've experienced real CPU bottlenecks.

Are there any benchmarks out there that looks at how low-end video cards scale with higher-end CPUs? My build is running over-budget and I could just slap my 4770 in there in the meantime, but I have no idea what my performance would look like.

Is it really worth it to swap out an i5 2500k for a 3570k? I'd probably end up getting an Asus P8Z77 mobo as well, even though the older model is still compatible. It'd only end up costing me about 50 bucks more. (haven't ordered anything yet, still staring at my cart nervously as I have this whole week)

I am about to pull the trigger on my new rig since the 3770K's just came in.

What does GAF think of the GTX570 for bang for the buck? I really want the GTX680 but I just have a hard time justifying 500+ for a video card. I currently have an HD5850 I could put in my new machine until something like the GTX670 is around and can be found for 300 dollars or I could get something now. What do you guys think?

This is what I have in my cart waiting to push the go button:
Rosewill BLACKHAWK Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case, come with Five Fans, window side panel, top HDD dock
ASUS VW246H Glossy Black 24" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 ASCR 20000:1 (1000:1) Built-in Speakers
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL (x 2)
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I73770K
Corsair Force Series GT CSSD-F240GBGT-BK 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Rosewill Xtreme Series RX750-S-B 750W Continuous @40°C ,80 PLUS Certified, ATX12V v2.2 & EPS12V v2.91, SLI Ready CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Compatible with Core i7, i5 Power Supply

Currently $1200 without the video card.
I am taking my hard drives and BD-R drive from my current machine amd selling the remaining parts on eBay. I'm getting the SSD above as my boot drive and to run a few games on. One of my current hard drives will be my steam drive.
Any advice on my parts is welcome too.

I understand that, but non color managed applications don't. I don't know if that dell has a processor on it that converts srgb signals to argb, but if it doesn't you're not seeing correct colors. If you are sending a srgb signal (like any non color managed application will do, including chrome, games, and the vast majority of all software) the srgb signal will be incorrectly scaled to argb by the monitor, which makes things look really vibrant but also incorrect. The reason that these are used professionally is for video editing, photoshop, and other color managed applications. Try switching the monitor to srgb and see what happens.

Okay. ~20 hours of labor and it's done. Thread on OCN here with the clearance info and pictures I took. Basically my build went as thus:

-Put Maximus V Gene in to get an idea of clearances, took lots of pictures. Plan watercooling loop.
-Become so enamored with it, that I decide to just go for it and swap in the parts from my 600T build.
-Realize that the H100 won't fit in there with the MVG because of the EPS 8 pin conflicts with fan.
-Cut fan housing to make it fit, it doesnt.
-Route 8 pin cable downward to create an extra few mm of clearance, doesn't reach PSU.
-Look up 20mm thick fan radiator performance, followed by weeping.
-Mount H100 in the front of the case (which I successfully did), then remember PSU needs to go there too after about 5 hours of measuring, drilling, and mounting.
-Swap parts again, put in Sabertooth (EPS power has a bit more clearance there), still not enough.
-Decide to just say screw it and go for an H60/80 or a CM TPC 812, put stock heatsink on for the time being.
-Realize that bottom mounted HDD drives make cable management a total nightmare.
-Put back on HDD cage to add more rear 'hiding' space, remount HDDs.
-Need to go to bed after I was sitting and staring at it for like 10 minutes without thinking.
-Finish cable management this morning. Wasn't bad by any means, but would be a disaster for a novice.

End result (excuse the teeny stock heatsink):

SADzkh.jpg

That's all the parts from this build:

qHQRQh.jpg

Crammed into a case that is significantly smaller:

cO0Nch.jpg

Most of my thoughts can be found in that OCN thread. But, despite the difficulty, I love this case to death. The fit and finish is absolutely brilliant, and the design is so different yet everything works well. I can't think of a better case if you value design, quality, and are aiming for an air build.

Sent the MVGene back, waiting for the V750 to do the crazy water build.

Checking to see if anyone has any feelings on these questions!
I am personally a fan of the wire rack for holding monitors as well as the computer. They're totally modular and have all sorts of attachments and racks you can add to customize it.

As far as mousepads go, I like the giant ones (3'x1.5'). This makes it so there is mousepad surface in every possible place I'd move my mouse.

Not really. Games at normal resolutions are always going to be bottlenecked by the GPU ultimately. There are some games in which you will see improvements, especially in Civ V or any Unreal Engine game, but it's going to be modest at best generally. Don't quote me, but I can't imagine much more than 10 fps at best (depending on the older processor).

I helped a friend build his first setup, so I understand that.

Still, you would think desktop computers would have become smaller today compared to how they were a decade or two ago.

Guess it's hard for case manufacturers to agree on setting an affordable micro ATX case design.
The designs are out there, you just need to look harder. There are plenty of amazing sub $100 mATX cases.

Generally though, the movement towards big cases is so people aren't limited in options. Fitting an H100 in the roof, for example, requires ~53mm of clearance above the motherboard, or an offset mounting spot. People also like a bit of room behind the motherboard for cable management, as well as clearance from the motherboard to the side panel for big heatsinks. They also want to fit in really big GPUs. Once you start adding all of this together, you end up with cases that are generally the size of the 600T.

Then, there's the whole watercooling crowd.

Silverstone, Lian Li, and Fractal all have designs that seem to cater towards what you are suggesting though.

Built my newest rig the other day. Third SB rig since they came out, I keep wanting to change out lol. Anyways, I ended up with:

Temjin TJ08
Asus Maximus Gene V Z77
i7 2700K w/CM 212 Evo
Sapphire 7970 OC
16GB Patriot 1600
2x120GB Crucial M4 SSDs (had a 64GB and loved it a lot, so went with them again)
LG BR/DVD-RW
Old Samsung F3 1TB and fans to round out the rest of it

Was a bit of a pain to work in an mATX case (it's been a while), but overall I'm happy with how it turned out. Really digging the mobo and all the features it comes with. Not gonna bother with Lucid 'til I really need it.

Man, I was sad to put mine back in the box. How is the sound quality for onboard audio? I've been wanting to ditch my DX for a long time, but I just can't seem to do it. Heard good things about the Supreme X-Fi on the MVGene.

About to pull the trigger on

GA-Z77-D3H Motherboard Bundle w/ Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Kit

and an i5 2500k.

and a Hyper 212+ should I add the second fan in?

I would wait for the i5 3570k to be in stock, but I am an overclocking hound and don't like hearing that it runs hot.

Someone stop me in the next 10 minutes if im making a bad choice, I am going to go pick it up.

I've got a GA-Z77-D3H + 2500k + Hyper 212+. Just so you're aware, I can't push the Vcore past 1.365 V without locking up, which gets me 4.5 GHz stable (so far) under 70C.

If you want to overclock more than that, I suggest you shell out for a higher-end motherboard.

Going from a Pentium E5200 @ 3.25GHz to a 2500K, planing on overclocking to at least 4GHz.

What an unusual problem I've run into.

My unlocked 6950 2GB doesn't work with the P8Z77-V Pro motherboard I got. If it switch it back to the stock bios, it works.

I hope it's not a chipset compatibility issue, because I also have an unlocked 6950 and I'm about to get a Maximus V.

I'm glad I had a stock BIOS to switch back to, it saved my bacon. I really didn't want to go back to my 5770. :-/

I saw something with Z68 that seems to imply it was something ASUS did. Will have to see if they upgrade the motherboard BIOS.

howdy folks, I have a quick question - do you recommend me to buy this one (1k euros)?

I've compared the setup with the chart on the OP and it seems ok but I'd prefer to ask you directly.
I don't need the new PC right away, but atm I could afford to buy one and I wouldn't mind running very well The Witcher 2.
I'd like to buy the new machine before Borderlands 2 will be available (September). Considering this, is it best to wait summer then?

I am clueless as to Euro prices, but that does seem expensive. The videocard is pretty uninspiring too. It's confusing, but the GTX560 is pretty different than the 560Ti or 560Ti 448 core.

Got my first ever PC. I'm a complete beginner and am hoping to get some help to understand how fans work. The background:

- my computer has a particularily noisy Fan 2.
- it kicks in occasionally in jet engine mode while gaming, staying there for some 10 sec
- it's full on jet engine after 5mins of torture test
- Using Open Hardware Monitor I found out the fan begins to sound like a jet engine when it passes 5000RPM (it maxes out in 6000RPM)
- I tried taking the fan offline by unplugging its 4 pin connector. Doing so had virtually no effect on 15min Prime95&Furmark temps
- Still, I don't want to just leave it offline.

So I have two ideas

1. Somehow cap the fan at 5000RPM and see what happens. I have the Speedfan app but can't figure out how to achieve this.

2. Replace it with a silent fan. These fans typically run at a lower speed anyway. Here I don't understand how the PC will know the new max speed of the fan. Can it read it somehow from the 4 pin connector? Can I somehow tell to the Pc that this fan will need to work harder?

A fan running at 5000rpm? What size it is?

Depending ion it's size/performance you should be able to go into the BIOS and cap it at around 800-1500rpm.

Better fans like some Gentle Typhoons or Scythes will run near silent and push a lot of air at 600-2000rpm.

Tiny one, 60mm I think, and pretty slim too. Trying to find a silent, slim 60mm fan with a 4 pin cable is like looking for an unicorn

Want to order a new machine today. Been looking and researching parts all day. I've come up with this:

Corsair Obsidian Series 650D
OCZ ZX Series 1000W ATX12V 24PIN Active PFC 80 Plus Gold 83A Power Supply
OCZ Vertex 3 120GB 2.5IN SATA3 6Gbps SandForce SF-2281 Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD
Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA3 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Drive
ASUS Sabertooth Z77 ATX LGA1155 DDR3 SLI 3PCI-E16 4PCI-E1 SATA3 HDMI DisplayPort USB3.0 Motherboard
Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H100
Intel Core i7 3770K
G.SKILL F3-2400C10D-16GTX Trident X 16GB 2X8GB DDR3-2400 CL10 240PIN 1.65V Dual Channel Memory Kit
GeForce GTX 680 (whichever brand I trust that comes in stock first really)

What do you guys think? Been a while since I've looked in to parts. I'm open to suggestions. I've obviously be overclocking this beast.

You don't need a 4 pin. You can get a 3 pin that is an adequate RPM/dB level and you'll be fine.

*edit*

http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g36...x_10mm_Fans-Page1.html?id=CSQkHcEo&mv_pc=1824

Don't know whether it's a 10mm or 15mm. But there's both for you. You can also get a thicker one if there is enough space.

Great links, thanks. Will measure tomorrow and see what kind of a fan would fit. Yeah the 4 pin thing was because the free jack on the motherboard is 4 pin, but I suppose there are adapters.

You can put the 3 pins right on the 4 pin (PWM) header. It's the 4th pin that allows for PWM, or pulse width modulation. It basically allows the computer to pulse power on, and through a complicated system can infinitely change the RPM without needing to regulate voltage based on your settings in BIOS.

So lets say 1500RPM is what you want. Try to find a fan around that speed with a 3 pin if you can't find a good alternative for 4 pin. It won't go any higher than that, but will stick at that speed since it's what the fan is designed for.

Got it. So it'll be fixed to the speed regardless of system temp. The varying speed is in fact one of the problems of the current fan. When it gets some temperature reading, god knows from where, it kicks in jet engine mode. But from Open Hardware Monitor I am not able to guess which temperature it finds alarming.

I'm not an expert on that codec stuff, but I'd assume that has more to do with the motherboard chipset than the on-die GPU.

Question about Asus Z77 mobos, they come with Fan Xpert 2 software which lets you set up fan profiles, control their speed, etc. Does that require 4-pin PWM fans to work, or will it also work with older 3-pin fans?

Hi guys, upgrading my computer as it is not performing in the games I play these days. My budget is roughly $600.

My current specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 Dual-Core 6000+ 3.01ghz
RAM: 2gb Corsair
MOBO: ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe
GPU: ASUS GeForce 8800GTS
PSU: not sure, something old...

I am thinking of upgrading to this:

Total around $600.

I am pretty loyal to both ASUS and AMD...

I only have two games that I need to run well, in order of priority:

1) Diablo 3. Currently the beta has a lot of slowdown for me whenever there is a big fight etc.

2) Tribes: Ascend. 120fps would be nice here, even in minimal settings is fine...

Would really like high FPS in both of these games. TA is probably the harder of the two to run.

I would also like to be able to stream both of these games, but if I can get them running with high fps but not be able to stream that is fine as well...

I currently run at 1024x768 on an old 19" CRT (I am a FPS player mostly), but I will be upgrading to a 120hz monitor very soon after doing this computer upgrade.

I will NOT be overclocking.

I need an upgrade before D3 comes out obviously, so I will be placing an order this coming week.

Can anyone advice me as to whether my intended upgrade will run those two games very well? Or am I wasting my time with a $600 budget.

Unfortunately for what you want you need Intel and you need to overclock.

Take the enhanced part list (2500K and overclock to 4.2Ghz stock), get a VP450 PSU, and buy a used GPU.

So im on the i5 2500k set up now,

I was BSOD'ing like a mother earlier, but I think i got some steady stable run time now at 4.5 with voltage at 1.30, once I get my other drivers up to date I will stress test and see whats up.

Still left wondering if I will notice a difference over my aging am3 setup with the x6 1055t.

Time will tell.

I got the hyper 212+ with dual fans, holy was I tempted by the H100, but for 120 bucks vs 40 dollars after the second fan, I just couldn't pull the trigger.

Also finally able to make use of my extra RAM i bought, when using it with my am3 board I was forced to lower my Clock speed target on my cpu due to instabilities while trying to support 16gb's of Ram.

Now I finally have 16 gigs running too! Yay, combined with my new 7950 OC'd I think I will be ok for some time to come now.

You should. That's a real nice boost.
There was someone here selling a 560 ti in the buy/sell thread for 150 bucks, which is a pretty awesome price.
The 560Ti he linked is a really nice cooler, but expensive for what it is. Not even a 448 version.

I'm still selling my 6950 2GB for $200 shipped in original box if anyone is interested:

PM me if you want more info (working, keeping it short) but:

You need ~4.5ghz 2500K and a 5870/6870/560Ti level of performance to get 120FPS in T:A with a minimal comp config, at least you did as of 1 month ago.

As soon as you stream, the FPS drops to 60-80. We've tested this on a 3930K @ 4.8hz with dual 580s, same deal. The *only* way around this is by using a Black Magic Intensity Pro or similar capture device in a secondary computer. Additionally, it takes a lot of finagling to get both a 120hz/fps display and to duplicate it for a BMIP/Capture card, as they capture over HDMI or breakout component.

Basically, you can't stream from the same computer that you are playing on unless you are okay with 60fps and slightly glitchy play from time to time.

Check the race your pc thread, this 6950 clocks higher than any other 6950 out there, and higher than any I've seen on air. Would do really well with T:A, actually, as it seems to like lots of VRAM. Go for this instead of your 560Ti.

Thanks for the info, guys.

I guess I will scrap the streaming idea and just go for performance...and up my budget slightly. Will post more questions in a bit after I come up with a new parts list.

hey guys, need help here.

planning to build a new rig soon, and the last setup that I did was like 5 years ago (lol) so I'm pretty much clueless on what's the best combination or setup now.

I've read that Intel's Ivy bridge is now available right? I guess I would want that. (not the highest tier, I can even settle for the quad i5.

A maxxed out Diablo III is all I need. And alot of ram since I'm doing some photography and graphics stuff.

Thanks :D

I'm having a problem with a computer I just built. It was my first time ever building a computer so I'm sorry if I can't make this exactly clear. Everything was working fine for about a week after I finished, but now I am getting weird artifacts flashing on the screen at random times. I've tried to capture what the artifacting looks like by using "print screen" but when I paste the image into Paint, the artifacting is gone. I've checked temperatures in CCC and it doesn't look like anything is too high (around 35 C). I've also opened the case and confirmed that all the fans are spinning and working properly. I'm wondering if the issue is a faulty GPU or weak PSU. Any ideas what the problem could be?

CPU: i5 2500k
GPU: XFX HD Radeon 6870
PSU: Corsair CX500
Motherboard: Biostar TZ68K+ Intel Z68
Connecting to my monitor (ASUS VS228H-P) via DVI

Sounds like a faulty GPU. Try rolling back and forward drivers to make sure (use CCleaner or DriverSweeper after uninstalling each set), but only because they're going to ask you to do the same thing in the RMA process probably.

It's all about the wall. It generally runs a bit cooler and with less power than SB up until it hits a wall and skyrockets. Because of this wall, it can't hit the higher clocks that SB can. If you have the cooler to get there, that means it has a lower potential.

I don't know for sure since I'm also trying to make the same decision but from everything I've read.

The 3570k will be cooler than the 2500k as long as it is clocked under 4.7.
