"A SINGLE aspect kept me from loving this game"

I ended up loving it anyway, so I'm cheesing this thread a bit, but the performance of F:NV on the PS3 definitely affected how much I enjoyed the game. Having to go through the final battle at about 5 fps was a serious dampener on the experience.

Correction. You play as RAIDEN for 90% the game, thats the sucky part.

Srry I am STILL so upset at thi I forgot to specify. Yes it was the Raiden portion which I literally dropped the controller and said "what the f...."

Then I got yelled at by my mom for swearing. Lol

Skyrim- Loot scaling.

Hey guys lets make a game designed around exploration and then make the loot completely randomized and it scales to your level! Completed that hour long dungeon with a bitch of an end boss? Congrats, here's your Iron Sword of Stamina Drain that saps a whopping 2 points of stamina per hit!

There were other problems in this game but that's by far the most egregious.
So true.
There's plenty I don't like in Bethesda games, but this is probably the single most annoying feature in TES.
"You can go anywhere, explore any dungeon". Well, and what's the point? The combat itself isn't fun, so you don't play to enjoy it, and everywhere you go you find potentially the same scaled enemies and the same scaled loot.
It doesn't help that you can top any loot in the game exploiting the craft system to build insanely powerful stuff barely two hours into the game.

Anyone mentioning MP3's motion controls needs to reevaluate their ability to enjoy video games. The very, very few non-aiming bits were done well, and the controls actually worked... it's the game that proved to me dual thumbsticks are outdated if motion control is done right. Zelda, I don't know. It's nice to have 1:1 in SS, but I find myself just flailing wildly because it works in so many other games

near game breaker for me: c-stick in Luigi's Mansion. Never clicked for me, I'm kinda glad the game was short and not overly hard, if it had been 15 hours and 8/10 difficulty the control scheme would have made the game insufferable.

DCKR: Terrible waggle.

Metroid Prime 3: Didn't like the controls. Couldn't even finish my second playthrough (and I've replay the first 2 Primes numerous times).

ModNation Racers: Granted, I've only played the demo, but I hated driving with R2.

Basically, anything with bad default controls. Options are a must, especially for anything with motion controls.

Never got past this point. I actually don't understand how it's possible. He just annihilates me completely.

Pre-grinding. I got there and had to restart the game. Ramza simply wasn't capable on my first save. Frustrating, but the fact that I leveled hard and STILL had a challenge later on made me feel as though I made the right decision.

And then proceeded to use the rest of the game as toilet paper. Fuck it was easy after this.

Demon's Souls menus

Loved the game, played about two weeks of it without finishing and learned all the menu stuff from the guide. But when I returned to it I forgot what all the menu items meant, I really couldn't be bothered learning it again

Does Dark Souls have smarter menu design?

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
I put a few hours into Risen and enjoyed it for the most part, and I intend to play through it prior to the sequel, but having to sheath your weapon prior to inspecting objects is such an annoying oversight (or, dare I say, design decision).

Excitebots The controls.

Oh man, I forgot about that one. How anyone could possibly having fun doing the dumbass movements in this game is beyond me.

Metroid Prime 3 - I'm another one who didn't like the controls at all. The battle against the generic ice guy was horrible as he's zipping all over the place while you're fumbling with the clunky control setup, which only works well when something is in front of you.

The framerate in Castlevania - Lords of Shadow. It was just unstable and low enough to completely ruin any sense of fluidity the game may otherwise have had. The experience just felt chunky and poor as a result.

Killed my interest in the game.

The checkpoints in the Xbox Ninja Gaiden. I eventually persevered but it drove me mad, especially when you'd die at a boss and would have to play for 15 minutes to get back there only to die again straight away.

Kid Icarus: Uprising - The Ground Controls

I'm making it through okay so far, but goddamn boss battles have been a PAIN IN THE ASS because I can't get a handle of dodging and rotating the camera to refocus on the boss. I wish it had lock-on. :(

It happens in alot of games but Gears is the only one that comes to mind as making the game unfinishable. I generally don't like cover systems and the combination of gears system and being locked down in an area until you kill x amount of enemies over and over again made it unplayable.

Not any game specifically, but when an Achievement/Trophy glitches and doesn't unlock it is the worst feeling in the world. I can't think of the game right now.

Get the old DS thumb strap. It's MUCH easier using your thumb than it is a stylus. Though it's still awkward.

Final Fantasy 9 - painfully slow battles
other than that, everything else in the game is absolute gold.

Yeah that grew old real quick. Not even close to my biggest gripe with the game though. It's hard to enjoy a game where you have an overwhelming desire to stab the main character's eyes out with a trident.

Squall's response to my criticisms?
"Whatever"

I agree with the loot-scaling complaint in Skyrim. If you're going to have such automatic combat, you ought to give players meaningful rewards for slugging through a 45 minute dungeon. The feature that really killed Skyrim for me though was the completely broken scale. Towns with 20 people in it? Leading a 'seige' with 5 other soldiers? That stuff was barely forgiveable in 2006 with Oblivion.

I don't think the fight is that bad. The bad part is that if you can't beat Wiegraf then there is no way to leave and you effectively have to restart the entire game.

No you don't. The trick is to avoid triggering the transformation and spam Accumulate until your party is getting 2-3 turns for each of Wiegraf's. The buffs stay in place post-transformation and you can kick his ass pretty handily even if you're otherwise under-leveled. And you get a ton of JP out of it, too. ;)

Red Dead Redemption: the aiming system. With aim assist on, it was entirely too easy and with it off, it became frustratingly difficult. I loved everything else about the game, but I never finished it because I just hated the shooting parts.

Uncharted 3 Drake's Deception - the controls

I don't know why but it seems the controls don't respond instantly or just respond at all. Most of my deaths from the campaign are because of this. If I want to go in cover, the game won't let me. If I want to roll, the game snaps me into cover even though the movement is towards the other direction. This happens all the time in chapters 20 to 22. Never had problems like this in the first two games.

Dead Rising series-I hate the timer aspect. I want to love this series but it needs to be more explorable with no limits, like GTA maybe.

Resident Evil-I hate the limited saves aspect.

Vagrant Story's weapon upgrade system.

Such an amazing and beautiful game, almost completely ruined by an overwrought and under-explained weapon system.

This is a great one that I forgot. As a child, whenever I was sick my dad would rent all of the Romero zombie films for me (we only had one local video store and they had a "5 for $5" deal). I figured my dream of holing up in a mall, surviving the zombie apocalypse would translate into my dream game. Such a stupid game, marred by stupid decisions. I'm still bitter.

This one million times.

Ended up having to watch a let's play just to enjoy the story and the environments.

It's a damn shame, if only they went with something more intuitive.

Darksiders - The sheer amount of enemies. It turns the whole game into a tedious grind, it's borderline unplayable.

Just started this game. It has some of the best gameplay balance I've ever seen in regards to combat vs. exploration vs. puzzles and I'm not sure where comments like the one quoted are coming from. I may have actually missed combat a little during one of the Twilight Cathedral's longer puzzle stretches.

More on the hardware end of things, but

PS3's crappy controller (raises shield)

Yes, I know, It's me, but all multiplat games go straight to the 360 for me and I have let myself miss out on a ton of titles with the exception of AAA ones because of that.

Destroy me, GAF
I'm not offended by this so much as puzzled. The PS3's controller has always seemed pretty unoffensive to me.

Oh god yes, this. I found Squall, and to a lesser extent Rinoa, profoundly revolting. I enjoyed the gameplay - drawing and junctioning didn't bother me in the least and Triple Triad is purely cracktastic, but it's the only FF I've never returned to because I just can't stomach Squall and his hideous, sullen face. If only Laguna and Raine had been the leads....
