Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

Not sure why, but Spartan Ops really doesn't excite me that much. I guess I was never much of a firefight person either, though. And I have not truly enjoyed a Halo Campaign since Combat Evolved, which leaves matchmaking my main interest in Halo4. Can't wait until we get some more footage.
 
Hmmm.

1) Dedi's aren't big for me personally, but man did Josh not include any form of justification in his answer. Even if GI didn't ask it, it's implicit with a question like that.
So tell us 343I, why ye can't offer both, a mix of P2P & Dedis. Just lay it out.
Perhaps in the Bulletin next week.

2) On the whole, as Dani said, there hasn't been enough "why" in all the reveals and feature discussions.

3) Since I regularly see post-Midnight working 343Iers on Twitter, don't crunch too hard!

Something else here strikes a nerve with me. I don't want to see Forgeworld because I don't want to see user created content in a AAA title. Maybe thats just me.

Because depending on Microsoft for content to be made has worked out so well. Releasing two packs and then taking forever to release more maps just to market another game needs to stop.

We need community tools to make content so the community can pick up where Microsoft lacks in.

Again, I'm not a big Dedi's guy but the exclusion is controversial and it's a good talking point:

Assuming it's a cost issue / that they feel there wouldn't be a good enough ROI thanks to their netcode, what if having it be P2P allows the budget enough room to make Spartan Ops free rather than traditional dlc?
That they made the decision to put that money towards making Spartan Ops free rather than Dedi's. Purely hypothetical, but would that change how you feel about it?

I'm not sure it would for me.
In fact I'd go as far as wanting to see their metrics on Dedis vs their netcode.
Arguably offensive that I'd even suggest it but all I harp on with on GAF and elsewhere, with any dev or any situation, is to strive for transparency.

I do think the water gets murkier if there's a Season Pass, because it's asking for even more money (on top of Gold and the cost of the game) without dedicated servers.

As a side note: I do think Season Passes, at least with Gears, worked out well because it forces the developers to commit to making a certain quantity of content within a certain timeframe.

Yeah, after the Tim Schafer thing, transparency works for both parties. Knowing the industry, it's going to be post release before we get that info. We might get high level, press worthy snippets before then. Did Marcus ever go into great detail in his blog in the build up to Reach?

I'd rather not force a situation where the quality drops to keep up with set schedules, though. Season passes to me are lumped into the category of "if men were angels"-type theory that is likely to come crashing down in practice. It does seem to have worked fairly well for Gear, I'll allow.

Frequent host migrations aside, Reach's MP netcode is pretty great; if Halo 4 matches or exceeds it, I don't understand the issue. I just hope Spartan Ops is a step up from Firefight in that department.

Sorry for the late reply but this simply isn't true.

While the netcode is better in Reach compared to previous Halos, it's horrible

I haven't actually played Reach MM in a few months because I've been playing less frustrating games. When I did come back to MM to try a few matches, it was depressing.

Most of my shots wouldn't connect, or would show as connecting but wouldn't deal any damage. Input lag was terrible. It was unplayable.

Of course people are going to reply with "That's what you get from living in Europe" and whatnot which is the problem.

BF3 has dedis, I can just pick European servers and I've never ever ever had lag problems.

Getting my ass kicked because of lag is just not fun.

I really hope they finally fix all the host-switch glitches. Especially the re-appearing weapons. It can ruin a match so much and it's been a problem for 3 games now.

I was under the impression you had to have a bunch of DLC to use them. Is that not the case? When I had that free pack installed it kept popping the "you won't be on dedicated servers" message.

I'm not a corporate robot defending anything, I'm just realistic in knowing that Halo dedicated servers aren't going to happen probably ever and offering alternatives. You can petition as long as you like, but men in suits run this industry at the end of the day.

The problem with that is the more state you synch to the clients to persist in a host switch, your bandwidth usage and latency goes up as well. Weapons coming back would be a decent tradeoff to make.

edit: that is to say, it'd be cool if they could get it fixed.

Anyone expecting Dedicated servers is just expecting too much, they haven't used them yet, why would anyone think they would just because other games do. Its like some of you guys just think of shit you know they wont do just to bitch. This COD comparison is getting old. If anything Activation is copying 343/bungie more than the other way around. Glad I dont have my expectations soo high I will be nothing but disappointed or think they will include something that's never been in a halo game.

So if your disappointed just vote with your wallet. But I guess you guys have to do something for 7 more months.

Wow, I've read up on this and I actually think you might be right. Whilst it's a solution that could just be flat out avoided by not paywalling the fucking servers, it seems like MS have done just that anyway.

Well, dedicated servers were the secondary objective, the primary objective was custom game browsing. If we still get custom game browsing, I will be over the moon. I'm just not feeling too optimistic now.

I would imagine (hope) that the status of the power weapon spawn would be one of those things marked to be synced across everyone at all times. Although if you earn them.. somehow.. it wouldn't make them double spawn or anything, since you'd have to re-earn the drop again on a new host after using the last one.

The current one happens (I think) because of this: host leaves. Whichever client it chooses goes "okay, I knew I saw all these weapons at these spots, let's spawn them there". Then it goes "well, I don't know if players spawned with those or if they were picked up off the map, so let's start the timer again on all the map-based weapons" and then you have 2 swords on Ivory Tower.

Same reason sprees are lost in a host switch. Your box is not keeping track of your killing spree, the host is and is what awards you the medal, etc. So when the host leaves, the spree data goes with them.

CoD does keep track of your killstreak when the host switches. Copy that 343!

So awesome.

Speaking of which I had a great time with Firefight thursday and the NEP modes, although I wish ArcadeFight was a separate playlist - nobody ever seems to vote for limited and unlimited ammo gets old. I try to go sniper or grenade launcher for kicks and skillshots, but you only end up getting leftover scraps because everybody else runs with rocket launchers and fuel rod cannons. And against that kind of weaponry no change in enemy progression really matters a damn.

But doubles NEP? Good stuff and sometimes hard as nails.
