Shadowloo Showdown 2012 | Fighting game tournament (AU) | May 4-6

Judging by reading your posts I missed good matches in AE, I just woke up lol.

I can say it was the most awesome SF4 top 8 I ever watched, even better than last year EVO. Nearly every matches went down the wire and it was refreshing to see characters like Dictator and Gen.

Last year's Evo probably ranks slightly higher for me since the stakes and hype make it feel bigger and more important. Plus it had bigger moments like Poongko styling on Daigo and Latif's run. This one was every bit as good and maybe even better, but didn't have the same weight to it. Less star power too.

I'm surprised people are excited about a Bison doing well. It's not like he's low tier or anything, and his play style has been the exact same for 3 years straight. Plus he beat Gen. :(

He isn't. But Bison normally doesn't get very far. They either come across Guile or run into that the wake up game that has become the epitome of SF4 (eg. Akuma vortex, Rufus/Cammy/Yun divekicks, Viper/Seth stupidity). Bison is stuck being one of the few characters in SF4 that can't lose the life lead and make a huge comeback.

I'll wait for the archives to be updated so I can watch it, and the kof13 top 4.

Edit: Never mind, mr. puppy linked the archives.

Well yeah, he's a down-back character. Blanka, Honda, Deejay, Guile and Dhalsim are other examples. It's a common SF2 problem, actually.

I never miss Bison though. That damn foot! Plus, in my opinion anyway, he's super boring to watch. At least Bison has options for most of the cast. He can handle most characters with his rushdown and damage, grapplers with his footsies and projectile-heavy characters with u2, ex scissors and headstomp. He has very few bad matchups when compared to someone like Honda or Dhalsim. They exist, but compared to what Zangief has to deal with, he's got it easy.

You wouldn't know it from the posters in this thread (lol NeoGAF), but SFxT was actually really hype.

And, it got 14K viewers (a number which gradually rose as SFxT finals went on, rather than dissipating from boredom over time), despite common believe that no one cares about the game.

Good players + good matches = entertainment: http://www.twitch.tv/shadowloohq/b/317307349

I'd recommend watching Poongko v Gamerbee and Gamerbee vs JWong.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled hate.

When it came I left the stream have on interest in SFXT.

SFxT was competitive, yeah. I feel like that was the best the game has looked from a competitive angle that I've seen. Lots of back and forth with some pretty hype comebacks.

I always have this bad taste in my mouth when I watch it though. It just feels very.. I don't know, impure. Hit confirms into the same combo loop endlessly, people fighting the clock as much as the opponent, matches that take too long (unless you can't get your other guy in) - I just have a hard time respecting it, especially when SF4 is so much better. I'm just biased against it.

Yeah, the SFxT hate sometime is really stupid and overblown, but I don't think that matters, what matters is if people want to play it.

Justin wrote on twitter that he had much fun playing SFxT top 8, so it's not like the game is hated by every players.

Justin actually said he likes it better than Marvel. However lets not invalidate legitimate complaints people have with the game.

Excellent stuff there for kof.

Anyone can collate all the top 8 for each game?

Somewhat unfair of people to compare a game that need help with one of, if not the best SFIV tournament ever. :p The SS AE 2012 tournament is absolutely sick and quite possibly the best I have seen in the 3-4 years that the game has been featured. I especially loved the Gen and E.Ryu action. :] I'm still gonna watch SFxT with the flaws before your average SFIV US tournament any day of the week.

SS continues to be the 2nd best event in the year after EVO to look forward to as a stream monster.

I'm actually fine with the commentators too. Hype, knowledge, and no pre bias on my end for who I'd rather hear when it's a USA event.

Keep it up SS crew. :D

Edit: Also...

banbaban vs neurosis was such a great match, GODDAMN.

Real talk, all the SF4 matches in top 8 were god like....except the matches between Eita and Banbaban. Which made things even more unfortunate seeing as these two faced off in Winners and Grand finals. BBN was scared shitless when getting vortex'd and just kept doing stupid shit. Besides that he abused backdash like 2000 PP Chun players.

I was rooting hard for Tokido to make it. I think that would have made GF much more interesting because I think it would have been more competitive and having a bigger name like Tokido in GF makes it more hype.

KoK and Naruo's Evil Ryu's were really entertaining to watch, too :)

I liked the Chinese Ryu for some reason. I don't' know why to be honest. I guess it just because he wasn't like the 2083823 pseudo Ryu's out there. Different style then Choi and Valle, kind of like Daigo-esque (but obviously not on Daigo's level *at his prime of course*).

Man, Marvel was so sick!!! I'm so glad Fchamp lost. It's definitely somewhat cliche to hate on Fchamp nowadays, but he still has a long way to go before out living his past douche baggery, plus the characters he plays don't do him any favors.

Ahhhh, so glad you guys enjoyed the stream. This was the first day I've had "off" not working on stuff for SS so i'm glad to see a positive response.

Fchamp is a pretty cool guy. Best Phoenix on the planet too.

Sixfortyfive

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
he would probably give a shit about the rest of the cast of a particular game than just the top characters with the easiest cheapest shit.
Isn't this what he does in every game, though?

Not even hating. But when I think Tier Whore, Tokido and Floe are usually the first two people to come to mind. That's just what they do.

Tokido plays a game and tries to find the nastiest, cheapest stuff as soon as possible.

He also doesn't have that whole "Honor" code that many americans have (or want to have) when it comes to characters, he's actually rather proud of himself that he found that cheapness and is doing well with it.

I respect the hell out of that, honestly.

Actually, that's kind of a common attitude among Marvel players in general, even. People love to take pride in creating an oppressive team in that game, whereas in other games people prefer to argue that they're winning in spite of their characters and not because of them.

Congratulations to Eita for winning AE, the entire tournament was godlike.

The finals were not what I was hoping for though. I think Banbaban is a great player, but not on the same level as many of the other internationals who came. He caught breaks IMO and ran into the right people to get there. I was rooting for a Akuma mirror with Tokido in the finals but it wasn't meant to be. Great tournament though and I can't wait to see what these guys will do next.

I think Banbaban is at the same level as Eita.. both are that level below top players like Daigo, Sako, Mago, Momochi, Tokido etc... before this tournament Eita hasn't been as much a factor as Banbaban.. remember he was Top 10 in BP for AE, won the shadowloo japan qualifier which Eita and Michael-tan were in, clearly beat the Chinese Cammy a lot of people were thinking was going to win this etc. Eita really hasn't done much since winning the Masters @ World Game Cup 2010, he didn't make an impact @ Evo 2010 and IIRC he lost a FT5 against Champ... Akuma vs Sim and he still lost... Anyway these players are still awesome as fuck and would dominate most players from anywhere else and obviously are capable of taking games off the "top".

The thing Eita has over Banbaban is experience.. World Game Cup, Evo 2010 (did he go last year as well?), I'm pretty sure this was the first out of Japan tournament that Banbaban has played it... nerves affect even the best, look @ Alioune for a perfect example. Banbaban was clearly not playing optimal.. yet somehow won a losers finals that was looking free as fuck as per Justin (he was right behind me lol, saying shit like Bison you made that bitch!). I'm still in disbelief that he didn't confirm that ex-arrow into an ultra... I was up and jumping and heard the SFX for a combo and just went WHHHHAAAAAAAAAAATTTT. That would've made it 1-1 in the last set instead of being down 2-0... was the moment he lost the final imo.

Also as for Tokido vs Eita in grand finals... Eita smashed Tokido during the semis... wasn't as one sided as Eita vs Banbaban in Winners Finals but not far off. Also I can't believe how many spin knucles and at first hooligans Ban does... it's like my Cammy (minus the spin knuckles lol) not a top level Cammy... Justin's like "Why do Cammy players do that!". I remember watching the first vids of BNN in 2012 when he switched to Cammy and thought it would be something he got out of his system...

Still banbaban vs neurosis was the highlight for me, was so fucking hype... especially that match that was like boring as fuck the first 80 secs of the clock and than just went fucking nuts for the rest of it, after that lame duck of a winners final it was the losers finals we not only deserved but had to have.

Tokidos team isnt even that cheap. Not even a single sword normal character on his team.

I just realized that we were one match away from two Phoenix and west coast wins. If this was vanilla it was free for fchamp and viscant.

I disagree.
Thanks to KOF, A.E, and Marvel (<<< most hype) was the most electric tournament I have been to. Simply amazing apart from SFxT top 8 which no one gave two fucks about.

Almost, everyone hated SFXT top 8 at the event. No hype what so ever. Only reason you people heard the crowd cheering for Gamerbee was because everyone did NOT WANT A RESET. People were yelling out begging Justin to just fucking lose. It was so bad that the person on the mic had to tell JWong people were not cheering against him but the game because NO ONE wanted a reset.

Pongko got cheered because they love him downunder...too bad he started crying for like whole match after he got knocked out by JWong.

SFxT is truly fucking ass. I got so much shit from my friends because I tried to convince them it was a good game. Haha. Even I could not say the shit I witnessed was in any way hype. True fucking mood killing game.

Yes. Like crying crying. I felt so bad for him. :( If I recall Mov was comforting him. So touching.

The machine...has feelings?

Kidding aside he didn't look that good in SFxT in my opinion. His Kazuya lacks EWGF. Also, did he put on weight? Could've been a shitty camera angle or w/e, but he looked like he packed on a few lol.
