Skyward Sword runs sharply afoul of Wii's color depth restrictions--in that respect, it's very similar to Twilight Princess. Both games exhibit the same ugly quantization patterns every time they use smoke, dust, clouds, or similar. SS tends to use more broad areas of a single color, making the color banding problems more visible than in TP (But less so than in Wind Waker).

Hopefully a new system means a totally new engine.

Why are we even discussing then, all is perfect in this world
Ehh.. understand that I'm probably an out-of-touch oddball when it comes to many of these things. But comparing notes and exchanging ideas is a good way to kill time, I suppose. :)

(that, and there's always room for improvement.)

SS was gorgeous to me, the least of it's problems were the visuals.
It was the horrendous hand holding and the lack of any sense of exploration that ruined it.

Say, thread meta-question: Whom have we lost so far during these threads?
My sheet says DefensiveReject, BY2K, axisofweevles. The latter two will hopefully be back by E3. Anybody else in need of a memorial?

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
Skyward Sword is only second to Windwaker when it comes to 3D LOZ's.

These gifs are the best thing to happen to this thread, even above cl-icky circle pads.

You have a sheet keeping track of these folks?
(If so: wow! You're an asset to this horde of crazies, y'know that?)

I would ban-proof ShockingAlberto for E3.

Not because I'm worried about his meltdowns but because he lives up to his tag. Someone's gotta keep this place classy.

Not only do I not know what this means I think smoke, dust and so on look absolutely amazing in these games, especially Wind Waker and SS :D

The engine won't need a fix for this problem because the underlying technical limitation is almost certainly gone.

If you display the games on an HDTV, there will be repeated patterns in any sort of dust/smoke/fog/etc. Horizontal lines, mostly.

For what it's worth, Wind Waker and SS don't go together in this comparison--SS and TP go together, and Wind Waker is the odd man out. Both SS and TP use smoke textures with a high amount of visual "noise" in comparison to Wind Waker's stylised drawn smoke, which has clean areas of color and high-contrast outlines.

I intend to address the Fallen on the introductory post of the next thread.

Ooh, I just realized that I could ask at the While-GAF-is-down Forums that Cabbie threw together!

The facial and body animation was also pretty fucking awesome

skyward_sword_gif__webcam__by_shad0w8-d4u16cv.gif
Thats something I love so much about Nintendo and Zelda. Regardless of the tech compared to competitors the bodily and facial animations just seem so "pure" to me. It doesnt matter what game it is either ss,tp,ww,mm,oot I still get the same feeling even though theres tech out there that can produce more realistic quality of such. I still get chills from the transformations in MM. They're so intense.

I actually think Wii U Zelda might a bit farther along than people think. Last year, Aonuma said Skyward Sword had been mostly completed early in 2011 and much of the year was spent polishing the game. So assuming the entire console Zelda team was not needed just for polish, and knowing Grezzo was doing the leg work on OoT 3D, it would seem that EAD 3 had time last year to start a new Zelda project.

A teaser of Zelda at the show this year would not shock me.

SMG and MH3 disagree

SMG...yes. MH3 no. Not anymore. Xenoblade, Skyward Sword, and a few others out do it easily. MH3's distance shots look very nice but outside of that it looks rough (very in some cases) I feel compared to games that came after it on the system. I really noticed this when I started playing it again a few days ago. People complaining about Xenoblade's character models need to take a look at MH3.

I liked SS's graphics, but thought Twilights was better. The wolf & horse animations were great and the overall look of the land and dungeons were real nice.

Even if you're right, I'd bet the "new Zelda" project you speak of would be the 3DS one.

If Wii U can't match this, I refuse to ever buy it and I'll never play a video game ever again!

So good. 1080p N64 games would be awesome on Wii U.

Skyward Sword is a gorgeous game, held back by the Wii's power. After Wind Waker, it's at the top of my list for HD remakes I'd like to see.

Even that would be too early. HD Zelda is probably going to take time.

Laugh all you want, but once you get Porked, you'll feel the Burn!

Edit: wait what the hell did I just write?

Maybe another team was working on it the entire time...

I never understood why people usually leave out BRAWL when talking about technically impressive Wii titles.
That game has insane textures and effects. Models are fantastic, runs at 60fps and its pretty sharp looking too.

And yet another design trademark, this time for -what it seems- the Upad's connector (source)

And for something not directly WiiU related, was that Balance Board-vibration patent posted around here? (it's a bit old if I'm not mistaken)

I foresee Nintendo front loading the WiiU with
as many games as possible from their studios.

Because many of their
games go evergreen. The earlier they release,
the more time they can accumulate sales.

I expect the first two years of the WiiU's life to be
stellar, and will overshadow Sony's and MS's game library
of their next gen consoles.

man too much man too much! lol I get depressed thinking of the wait.

Sorry but no. Maybe it looked like shit on whatever TV you own, but its a damn good looking game and its widely accepted as such.

Yeah, what an awful looking game. Trully a "fucking eyesore" >_>

Holy shit wat?!

Holy shit yes.

This does not look good. It looks acceptable at best. It's a prime example of how tech can actually make great art look bad. Skyward Swords Design is almost impeccable, but it's technical realization is severly lacking.
The whole painterly look, that tries to mimmick pointilist artists is a neat idea in theory, and in fact, when looking at the filter that is applied to the background in Dolphin Shots makes it clear that they were truly on to something spectacular, but they completely botched it by having all those sharp defined and jagged low poly models and low res textures. Even more so considering how the image quality is ruined thanks to all the jaggies.
With Skyward Sword I feel that people simply give the game a free pass due to it's intended (but completely failed) painterly look.

I don't know if the Wii is simply too weak to pull off a decent filter to actually make everything on screen look like it's painted or if they simply didn't care. Either way, the game ends up being a schizophrenic mess between amazing art design but lackluster execution that either suffers from a lack of consistency or a lack of horsepower, probably both. It's halfway there, but not quite.

Again, I loved the game, but most of the time the graphics just looked outright weak, even for Wii.

If they do a new Zelda on WiiU, I expect them to put as much emphasis on getting the graphics right as they put effort into the Gameplay. I just hope that they won't botch such a great visual idea again.

The background is actually amazingly done, and in Dolphin you can actually see the texture of the brushstrokes, but why on earth they decided that the foreground should be all clean and defined with clear edges and all is beyond me. It really creates a disconnect between the painterly look of the background and the Dreamcast-ish Figures with low res textures draped over them.

Again, maybe the Wii wasn't able to create two or more layers of filters that would be needed to complete the painterly look and combine fore and background together. Who knows. All I know is the current end result looks like ass thanks to it, and it's a damn shame too as the design and art looks amazing.

MH3's problems:

- It runs at a sub-SD resolution, 360p if I remember right. Black border around the screen plus blurriness. On the kinda-plus side, no real jaggies I guess.
- Bloom out the ass. Every light source was bloomified. Made it look kinda ugly.

The character models are great however, especially the monsters, and the environments actually hold up really well too -- better than any Zelda game, but the drawback there is that the entire game needed loading screens every 50 feet. I would kill for a Monster Hunter game that was zone-less. I know that's part of the strategy, but the world feels so nice and alive but that takes me out of it every time.

I'm very interested in seeing MH3G in person because it potentially has solved the resolution issue, and due to that bloom might not be as noticeable. Aside from that I would imagine loading times are much shorter due to the cartridge medium.

Brawl is one of the best examples of what the Wii could do over the GCN. Side by side, Brawl is so much more detailed than Melee it's not funny.

The potential for the next smash bros game is so damn high. They could create some really amazing environments and character models. Really gonna be a thing of beauty.

Those fuckin' jaggies on SS...just awful. Thank God we're almost out of this shitty Nintendo tech era of suped-up technology from 2001.

Melee was also two weeks after the GC launched whereas Brawl was 1.5 years after Wii.
