The Wii U Speculation Thread V: The Final Frontier

A news concerning the dev kits (models, availability to developers, etc.)

Another important news: they are the mass produced dev kits.
I'd like to come-back to the latest IdeaMan hints. Yes I'm late.

If the V5 devkit is labeled "mass production ready" it let the release date speculation open to a July/September scenario. As some already pointed in this thread, final devkit delivery 1 month before system release isn't an exceptional situation while here 3rd parties would have, in the worst case, 2 month of time to adapt, 4 month for a September release date target. I'm just talking from a speculative pov, I know there are others parameters like the time needed to finalise key launch titles and so on, but just taking in account devkit timeline it's something interesting to note.

I also have a question IdeaMan - sorry if you already cleared, thread moves fast >
- One of the dev kit aspect (in comparison to the v4 ones) is... original
- Teasing part: besides possible improvement of the system power (slight to moderate though), there is at least one additional good news that come with them. It's not necessarily the obvious ones :p
Are you talking here about 2 different things?

Just read through today's bloodbath.

It is apparent that we have at last entered the Endgame of the E3 journey.

I really enjoy a lot of posters in this thread. There's gonna be an onslaught of trolls waiting for NintendoGAF in the coming days ahead. Please guys, don't allow their ignorance to get at you, thus contributing to the decadence of this thread/community.

This is supposed to be a light-hearted place right? Let's keep it that way, yeah?

Man, a speech like that normally isn't my style, heh.
I'll see you on the other side, Brother!

( if we stick to our own little thread, I think those who only come in to stir-up shit will probably pay the most.)

We're just two of an awful kind, bro.

I am what I am /popeye

Everybody else is just gonna have to...

this has probably been stated but i want to hear what people are gonna compare this upcoming gens games (at least ones developed later on in the generation like SS and others were) with graphically? i mean we're gonna hear some real wacked out, unthoughtout statements lol. i mean just looking a few pages back at the criticism on SS. what's gonna be the excuse when the graphics are all pretty much on par. that's right on par. i know you're thinking there is gonna be this humungous leap but there's not. i also know you're thinking, "oh i know". but lol, deep down inside you're still wishing to have something phenomenal.

oh and for u SS graphics haters, i guess this fight doesn't count as good graphics either:

Oh, and I missed this before, so maybe you did:

#2751: a developer in Santa Monica has been showing off the Wii U version of their game to certain journalists in the area this week.

People yelled at me last thread, insisting that I have to. So I've already written up the first post information (needs a little organization) and am mostly done designing the images needed for proper presentation. Aargh, you can't imagine how annoying it is to reproduce magazine logos and classic gaming text by sight. Anyway… it's big.

There are a couple people who really wanted to do it, too. I'm really happy that the thread exploded with rage earlier today, because it means that the chances of a Seventh thread before E3 increase. I will otherwise try to think of a way to be a good neighbor to them.

Meh :/

Judging from my notes, this is probably the fastest a WUST has gotten to one thousand posts in a day, by a small margin. We should get IdeaMan to piss people off more often. :D

Not funny ><

Have we ever had a thread like this before in past E3's? Besides the dedicated Nintendo E3 conference thread?

Glanced at this post and thought it said "if we stick to our own little thread, I think we can play strip-poker."

I'm not sure; I don't think so. To be honest, this feels a bit safer in here. Not for any nameable logical reason, mind you.. just because.

So.. after the speculations end...what the Hell is next for us?

Besides this megathread, I have few other communities I'm in around GAF.
It'll be like being an orphan. :p

Most of us here are Americans. We thrive best when in conflict.

Sorry, we also have a tendency towards schadenning our freudes now and then. You really have displayed a very high tolerance for abuse here. When I was your age, I had a tendency to cut and run when even one person expressed displeasure at my actions.

We'll all disband and never see each other again.

Just remember my brethren, there will be another Nintendo console after this one. We'll all be back.

when this speculation thread no longer exists it means the console will be out already! Then we move into separate game OTs.

About the arriving date of the mass production kits, i wouldn't use this as a proof that the system will launch rather early, maybe this time, Nintendo want to supply third-parties enough in advance from E3 for them to try to take advantage of its changes before the show, maybe they are tagged "mass production", but small revisions (like a V5.1) will come after, etc. It doesn't exclude the possibility of an earlier that we thought launch either.

I also have a question IdeaMan - sorry if you already cleared, thread moves fast >

Yes they are different

Basically, to spill the beans on the first mysterious line (5% of the content of my message), the dev kit color is original, and different than for the V4. I think i rarely seen such color used on a dev kit.

The return of bright purple?
:O

I don't understand, the dev kit is a different colour? Why bother doing that? Are dev kits ever indicative of the colours available upon release. Always thought they were generic boxes.

Hey, maybe i'm older than you :p

And i'm amazed by my skill of pacifying/zen-keeping/civil-railroading/tempering/diplomacying, i could have been harsh in my defensive answers, but i wanted peace and avoid polluting the thread. It's my moderator background :p

Oh sorry, i had 2 seconds of self-pride and contentment. Cut me some slack, i deserve it.

Indeed, maybe it is rarely seen but nevertheless, remember the Wii "Luigi" devkit?

The Wii dev kit was apparently green, if that page isn't lying. Must have been pretty final, as it highly resembles the usual Wii.

…oh, balls, this is just my day for being constantly beaten, isn't it?

The V5 dev kits are of a different color than the V4 ones. If i'm not wrong, V4 and V3 are of the same color. And V1 are again of a different color than V3 and v4. Don't know the color of the v2.

They are not indicative of the color of the retail system.

It's just a little info about dev kits, not ground-breaking, not earth-shattering, i was just answering to my good friend Mister Wong about one of the two mysterious lines of my yesterday post.

It's at least intriguing and interesting for people, and i'm in that crowd, that wonder how it's like to work on those dev kits, to picture developers being busy using them, etc. It's stimulating for the imagination.

Ha, I'm happy in your general direction, kid*. My posts, if they seem like jabs, are generally never meant in a manner of poor sport, though they can often come off that way, as I take many serious things lightly.

This made me LOL for some reason.

But after E3, there will be the "Wii U Fall Media Briefing Speculation Thread", duh.

You need to use different words than "polluting"/"pollution" and "nurturing".

Too repetitive and it makes me think of a toxic waste dump being on the receiving end of a breastfeeder.

It in turn recalls Baby Reggie so please make it stop...

There where three dev-kits for the Wii, one big black box (that you connect to a PC and run directly the code) that resembled nothing a Wii, a "Mario" devkit (which include a hard drive and could run disc images) and the "Luigi" devkit, which had a DVD drive and could run disc burned with a special disc burner (sold by Nintendo, using special Nintendo DVDs).

Exactly. Speculation doesn't stop at E3. In fact E3 will be just the start.
Indeed. That's kinda why it's important that we make it through; I wanna be comparing camping notes and stories with y'all live later on in the year. E3 could perhaps be considered the halfway point of our game; it's the part where we get sucked into the Dark World, only to find that another handful of dungeons are awaiting us!

(edit: and the Final Boss is the cash register at GameStop, I guess?)

It's so depressing to see that after 30/35, you are considered (or even worse, forced to self-considerate you) rather old in the videogame frame. But the gaming crowd must adapt, because with the huge population that started with the Nes growing old, we'll see this sector demography pursuing its evolution towards higher age ranges (i think the average is between 25 and 35/40 in the present time). And the industry in its entirety (developers, medias, etc.) must adapt to that.

It depends on whether or not the developers and publishers keep their age targeting wide. It's weird how there was this massive constriction of focus to the ~13-30 male demographic*, and those who targeted anywhere outside that (even if that targeting included the aforementioned demo) was considered disposable to the hobby.

* I originally wrote "18-35", but the marketing has primarily had a ton of content directed at teenaged boys who still have the disposable income of their parents but want more access to tits and blood.

Age is overrrated in all facets of life.

Sports, videogames, in general...

I've seen topics in the other forums here where they posted a picture of a celebrity in her late 30s/early 40s and people are like "dam hot for her age".

Know what really sucks? Being a completionist, getting older, and finding that my twitch reflexes and hand-eye coordination aren't what they used to be.

Oh? Get 1500 points in your horseback archery game? Sure! Gladly!
