Pokémon Community Thread: Gotta Catch 'Em All!

That's news to me. The general opinion I've heard is that catching shinies is always fine, as long as you don't actually use them if they're not the first one you find. And if they're the first one you come across, go for it.

All the nuzlockes I've seen done allow passes on the shinies. Considering how rare they are no one would look down on you for ignoring the rule if a random one appeared.

To begin with you shouldn't be Nuzlocking if what you care about is the internet acknowledging your run. Just have fun with the rules. I know plenty of people who are running their own version of Nuzlocke because they know it'll be more fun for them that way.

You should do a run where your main guy is a single-stage Pokemon.

Druddigon would be pretty neat, and decent, or Heatmor/Durant.

Druddigon is pretty cool. Though mine appears to be ridiculously slow. I keep sending it in against Alder's one, expecting to outspeed and KO, but nooooo. Apparently a >15 level advantage isn't enough :(

Thinking about starting a new file by dumping starter and using someone else in bw...

Did that once (well, ended up dropping Snivy at 17 instead of immediately), was one of my easiest runs. Off the top of my head, I ended up with Leavanny, Golurk, Beartic, Unfezant, Crustle and Simipour. Crustle is ridiculously good, for the record...

EvilMario

Will QA for food.
Shedinja is pretty fine as is. Sees moderate usage in every official metqgame ever. His issue is Tyranitar and Abomasnow who are omnipresent more than anything and that's something that stats and movepool changes can't fix.

I always wondered why I rarely see him used with Cloud Nine Pokemon in doubles / VGC. But he is on a few teams, there to wreck a good number of Pokemon that can't touch him with common movesets.. especially many bulky waters.

Pikachu is far, far better than Raichu.

No way that this:

is better than this:

Raichu.png

Both good, but Raichu is epic. :3

Drapion was pretty cool when he was revealed, mainly because he was revealed alongside Pachirisu and Cherrim.

I don't really pay attention to him much now, but J's was cool.

The only thing that can beat Drapion is another Drapion.
(16:13:54) DRACOFLARE2: omg my oppomemt use accupressure a bit too much and im doomed
(16:14:25) DRACOFLARE2: +6 in everystat including evasion
(16:14:29) DRACOFLARE2: can i win
(16:14:42) Galblade: use Whirlwind!
(16:14:54) DRACOFLARE2: no phazer!
(16:15:04) Galblade: Use taunt!
(16:15:11) Galblade: Stop him from going +1000
(16:15:16) Galblade: XD
(16:15:22) Galblade: You're doomed
(16:15:28) Benlisted[NU]: the question is how the hell did you let himget to+6in everything?
(16:15:46) DRACOFLARE2: i had a banded drapion with +4 attack
(16:15:50) Galblade: He was probably using Blissey against a shuckle
(16:16:10) Benlisted[NU]: and..?
(16:16:14) DRACOFLARE2: i used night slash and pwned his whole team
(16:16:21) Medic: by the way, draco.
(16:16:23) Medic: roar would miss.
(16:16:25) Medic: ;)
(16:16:42) DRACOFLARE2: his drapion took the hits and accupressure plus rested
(16:19:31) DRACOFLARE2: anybody want the log?
(16:19:46) Galblade: No
(16:20:04) Galblade: I don't want to see you stupidly letting them get +6 in everything
(16:20:21) TrainerDevon: I wanna see!
(16:20:28) DRACOFLARE2: come on i thought a +4 drapion with choice band will kill his
Drapion is the perfect Acupressure abuser. Only one weakness, massive physical defense that helps mitigate it, access to Taunt, can't be poisoned, a STAB that nothing is immune to, and most importantly of all, immunity to critical hits. Defensive set-up Pokémon are serious crit magnets - poor Quagsire :(

From Gen I-IV, what Pokemon do you dislike? When I state my opinions, i'm going to state them as if Gen V doesn't exist since it altered some of my views.

Here is my list.

1. Luvdisc

It's a small heart shaped fish that looks rather odd, has no evolve form, and isn't great for much of anything. The most useless Pokemon? Most likely.

-edit-

Is there a use for this Pokemon?

2. Probopass

Unappealing statue with facial hair. The large nose is a bit much as well.

I was talking strictly campaign, not metagame.

I've successfully completed two Nuzlockes to date; one of Platinum and one of my friend's copy of White. They were both a lot of fun and really emotional.

My team for Platinum was:

Goku (Infernape. Flare Blitz, Close Combat, Mach Punch, Stone Edge)

I think Venusaur is the more suited Goku. SolarBeam is the Pokemon version of Spirit Bomb - take in energy first, then hit with a really strong attack

Pokemon we don't like? I'm going to bypass first or midforms, I expect some of them to look a bit basic or underdeveloped (Bronzor leaps to mind), my wrath will be focused upon final forms or single form pokemon.

Gen 1
Dugtrio: Gen 1 sure loves its trios, Diglett times 3 being the worst offender, Jynx may look like a freakish humanoid monster but it's at least more inspired than 3 Digletts chilling together to pass off as an evo, like 3 kids on each others shoulders in an overcoat trying to be a man.

Gen 2
Stantler: I just hate this guy, the face especially
I'm torn on Sunflora, I was thinking of adding it but upon closer inspection its face cracks me up (suck it Stantler), the body/stem design is so basic though, like there was no effort at all.

Gen 3
Volbeat/Illumise: You could have been bug/fire! or something remotely interesting, instead we get two weak and odd looking bugs with nothing going for them
Luvdisc: Heart Scales are all you are good for!

Gen 4
Wormadam: even with three designs and type changes it's still pretty lame, plus you could have had Mothim instead.
Cresselia: An absolute mess, what the hell am I looking at?!

Gen 5
Musharna: Dream fetus, whoopee

1. The crappy uninspired mons - Seel, Dewgong, Grimer, Muk, Dugtrio, Magneton etc
2. Not really a fan of the sleek designs that were characteristic of gen 2 (e.g. Chikorita, Ampharos, Crobat, Lugia). The style is definitely consistent, but not one that I'm a fan of.
3. I'm a bit of a gen 3 fan, but the aforementioned Luvdisc is lame. Alomomola is basically Luvdisc done (slightly) right. The overabundance of silly one-stage Pokémon that weren't particularly useful (Illumise, Absol, Tropius, Mawile etc) was weird too.
4. OK, this has some terrible designs. Kricketot sucks. So do most of the other Bug-types. The evolutions and pre-evolutions were worse than the gen 2 ones. The redeeming graces of this are Empoleon (badass) and Drapion (already mentioned a few posts above).
5. Err... Cryogonal I guess?

Dislikes? Will keep it to the first 150.

Alakazam - I don't care about those stas; just freakinly hate their lame character design and stupid moves to fight against. Same goes for Kadabra.

Drowzee and Hypno; so much lack of inspiration. Just a random 'we need another Psyche character' kind of Pokémon.

Onix: Steelix looks badass, but Onix is just.. just rocks with a face on it. Nothing that makes it exceptional for any reason.

Zubat and Tentacool for always spamming, but not particularly because of design or anything. To be honest, Tenacruel looks pretty badass.

Zorua could be Puar, since he can "transform" as well.

And Krillin would probably be Mienfoo, since he's got the monk look.

True enough. I guess Darkrai could be Buu, due to his malicious nature and head-tentacle. Although I suppose that Kyurem could also be Buu to tie into the entire "assimilation" theme that Super Buu had going on.

I'm still trying to think of something for Piccolo. The closest I've come is Sabelye, due to the whole "demon" thing and the pointy ears.

Froslass: Ugly as sin. No wait, ugly as the Seven Deadly Sins. Put together.
Poliwrath: Amerikirby'd retread of the superior Poliwhirl.
Druddigon: A Digimon in Poke clothing. Also ugly as sin (no coincidence.) Should marry Froslass and have horrifically ugly babies.
Blaziken: Stupid hippy chicken that also skirts too close to the Digimon line.
Plusle/Minun: Shameless Pikachu/Pichu knockoffs only meant to pad Gen 3's dex and buff up the doubles gimmick.
Salamence: Stupid. Walking on four legs and looking like you were flattened by Jupiter's gravity is not imposing, let alone for a pseudo-legend. Garchomp is what Salamence should have been.
Ambipom: Looks creepy, which is a shame coming from Apom's cuteness.
Lickilicky: Lickitung wasn't the best design but this is just lame.
Phione: GTFO you non-legend.
Shaymin (normal): Such a lame looking Pokemon. Thankfully Sky Form made it kinda cool.

The Eterna Galactic Building in a Nuzlocke Run is brutal. :(

That damn X Special Kadabra killed my Zubat, Psyduck, and Staravia.

And Jupiter's Skuntank killed Kricketune, Chingling, Wormadam, Bidoof, and Gastly.

Now I just have untrained Geodude, Shellos, Pachirisu, Nosepass, and Buneary left. :(

My least favs:

Gen 1 - Dragonite: He looks more like an Orange Barney instead of the badass that Lance hypes him out to be.
Gen 2 - Entei: If there was a Man Bear Pig Pokemon, this would be it.
Gen 3 - Pluse & Minun - Stupid Pichu wannabes
Gen 4 - Pachirisu - See above
Gen 5 - Havent played yet

A bottom 5? Ooh, I smell controversy.

Gen I: Magneton/Dugtrio. Listen, I know that they were from the first games and GF was still experimenting, but sticking 3 of a Pokémon together and calling it a day is not an evolution. It's just lazy.

Gen II: Corsola. People harp on the Vanillish line for simply being an inanimate object with a smiley face stencilled on, but they should really be complaining about Corsola, who is literally just a piece of pink coral with eyes and a mouth. Its crappy stats and awful movepool don't help it in the usability department, either.

Gen III: Volbeat and Illumise. People around my campus know me as "that guy who can recite all 649 Pokémon in order" but that simply isn't true, due to these two being so forgettable that I skip them almost every time. Bland, boring, and full of untapped potential.

Gen IV: Rotom (Diamond and Pearl ONLY!). I know I'm going to get a TON of flak for this (particularly from Aero), so Flame Shield UP!

Rotom has always struck me as being simply lazy. Here's how the meeting to design it probably went:

GF Employee #1: Dude, we've gotta add like, one more electric-type, but we're out of time and budget!

GF Employee #2: Duuuude, don't worry, I got this. Okay, so, what if we made it, like, a bong?

GF#1: A bong? But isn't this game, like, for children?

GF#2: Dude, it's okay. No one will notice if we hide it away in a seemingly unimportant area and disguise it with a Poltergeist reference!

GF#1: Dude, great idea! But what should we call it?

GF#2: Well, like, motors have to do with electricity, right? So why don't we just call it "motor" backwards! R-O-T-O-M... Rotom!

GF#1: Excellent! *air guitar riff*

Note: dramatization; may not have happened.

I'll admit that they fixed in in Platinum by adding a creative gimmick and making it actually usable in battle, but even 5 years ago I was disappointed by the little guy and all of his potential.

Gen V: Conkeldurr. Aside from the fact that his clown nose and goatee combination makes him look unfathomably silly and his name actually contains the onomatopoeia for stupidity, giving a Pokémon a weapon just seems wrong. Now, I'm fine with Gallade and Bisharp as their blades are actually part of their body and Farfetch'd because the concept was handled well, but giving a Pokémon (and a Fighting-type at that what are essentially concrete clubs just weirds me out a little. Plus, he's way too oversaturated in the metagame to the pointnof annoyance. I'm sure if Scrafty was as popular as Conkeldurr then I'd get sick of him, too, but power begets popularity and popularity begets overuse, so I guess I can't complain too much.

Anyways, that's my two cents. I sincerely hope that you respect my opinion and not try to kill me in my sleep.

Isn't the whole idea that killing shinies and legendaries is a full endorsement of the rules? As you're supposed to only catch first-you-see Pokémon and a new one in case any of them dies.

Catching or killing a shiny is fine by your own choice, though it means you won't get XP if you do, which might mean you won't level up that time and won't learn a certain move that might be crucial next battle and..... blah blah one big 'what if' story.

I'd say: if you really want a shiny to import to another Pokémon game, just catch it. No one knows and it probably won't be a significant 'miss' of XP anyway.
The rules I'm playing with right now

- No extra lives or bullshit cards, if it faints it's dead, no matter how cheap.

- No dupes clause, first pokemon I see. This has actually been fairly generous to me so far, no six Zigzagoons or anything like that. It also let me catch another Seedot after Nuzleaf died.

- If I run into a shiny, I can catch it and use it.

- Rules turn off for legendaries - I can't use them, but I can catch them and reset if I fail/KO them by accident. (Similarly, if a pokemon faints against it, I'm not counting it, since the purpose is to catch it, not kill it)

- Nickname everything.

No limits on healing items, pokemon centers/marts etc. Pretty vanilla nuzlocke, but I've never beaten R/S/E before, save for a solo Swampert run of Sapphire, so this is how I'm experiencing it.

I've had a few close calls (Wattson's Voltorb got my Grovyle down to TWO HP with selfdestruct, and Norman was a big pain in the ass), but so far it's been smooth sailing.

I'm writing a comic of it on the side, as well. Still working on the first chapter, up to the Roxanne battle.

Dude, Rotom's a homage to Pulseman!

Anyway, here's my bottom in each Generation...

*Gen I: Eevee. I may sound mean here, but I don't like the Eeveelution family...they're overrated, and pretty boring since they're all basically fox/dog mono-type Pokemon. The only cool part about them is using Espeon and Umbreon in Colloseum but, apart from that, I find them pretty dumb, and this fucker started it. I really don't wanna see anymore Eeveelutions. That said, they're solid designs, but they're just too safe and "focus-tested" for me.

*Gen II: Pichu, Cleffa, and Igglybuff. I don't hate Baby Pokemon, but these ones are just smaller versions of already young looking Pokemon, unlike Magby, Elekid, and Smoochum which evolve from Pokemon I can see having younger forms. I actually think the Gen IV Baby Pokemon were all pretty solid, especially Bonsly since he is a pretty clever design that incorporates elements of its evolution by being a bonsai pot that uses Fake Tears to let out moisture. He's a Pokemon I could have seen existing back in Gen II and evolving into Sudowoodo right out. The introduction of Spiked Ear Pichu, however, makes Pichu rise to the top of my dislike list. What a stupid thing that was. Cleffa and Igglybuff aren't as bad, but still...

*Gen III: Masquerain. Changing the only Bug/Water in the entire game into ANOTHER Bug/Flying Pokemon is the worst. It even has the word "rain" in BOTH the Japanese and English names!. Nincada loses its Bug/Ground as well, which was also a unique type at the time, but at least its evolutions were unique and cool. Wasted potential, and it's not exactly a good looking Pokemon either.

*Gen IV: Froslass, simply because I loved Glalie and this stupid thing pretty much overshadows it in every way possible. :( I'm the only Glalie fan I feel, but hey, I love the Pokemon that are giant, floating puns.

*Gen V: Alomomola. Say what you will about Luvdisc, but he was the franchise's fall guy. His suckiness became his biggest strength. Alomomola is just a cheap attempt by Gamefreak to cash in on Luvdisc nostalgia, but sorry, but we already have a sucky heart fish.

Dude, Rotom's a homage to Pulseman!

I'm aware, although I admit I don't see the resemblance.

pulsemancomp.jpg

And for the record, just because a Pokémon is a clever homage doesn't mean it's a good Pokémon. Bronzor and Bronzong are an homage to an old Japanese legend and yet they're still given a lot of crap for being "unoriginal."

So technically my first encounter on Route 120 was Kecleon, but you know what? I ran into an Absol first time in the grass.

So yeah, I caught it. It totally counts, man.

Gen 1 - Don't really know. I suppose Zubat, for the usual reasons, but I don't really have a grudge against anyone in particular in this gen. There's a lot of uninspired designs and evolutions here, none really bug me all that much.

Gen 2 - Not sure who to put here. At first I wanted to put the Ledyba line on here for being so pathetic, but I actually really like Ledian's design. I think I'm going to have to go with Cleffa/Igglybuff. Just unnecessary, and in my opinion, really ugly. Don't mind Magby, Elekid, Smoochum or even Pichu quite as much.

Gen 3 - Spinda. Cute gimmick, but wasted on such a crappy pokemon. To be fair, a big reason for him to be on this list is that one of the two shinies I've found on my own was this stupid, useless thing...but he'd probably be here anyway.

Gen 4 - Finneon and Lumineon. It's not so much that I truly dislike them, but rather I find them offensively boring. They have absolutely nothing interesting going on with their abilities, movesets, stats, typing, anything. Finneon's design is boring, and Lumineon looks silly at best. In my opinion, the laziest and most forgettable Pokemon line ever made.

Gen 5 - Druddigon. The usefulness and moveset isn't my problem, but rather the design. The design and coloring of this guy looks terrible. To me, it just feels overdone. The random spikes, the coloring. those wings...seriously, what are those supposed to be? They look more like leaves than wings, they aren't positioned properly for wings, and they're just so small. What is this pokemon supposed to be anyway? I've heard that it's inspired by a gargoyle, and I'd be fine with that, but then it should've been part Rock. Anyway, I just loathe this guy's looks.

NAH

As for Pokemon I legitimately dislike... off the top of my head:

Gen 1- Zubat
Gen 2- None
Gen 3- Don't really dislike any, just a lot of bland, forgettable Pokemon this gen
Gen 4- all the shitty evolutions of Gen 1 Pokemon, shitty legendaries
Gen 5- Zoroark for being a fucking Lucario wannabe

Least favorites:

Gen I - Zubat. They needed more cave Pokemon, and this was before Crobat, so it wasn't an awesome team player or anything.

Gen II - Magcargo. Hideous design.

Gen III - Mawile. I don't even know what this is supposed to be!

Gen IV - Carnivine. WHAT ARE YOU.

Gen V - Garbodor. It actually made me physically nauseous when I first saw it. I hate to invoke the ick factor, but man.

Nuzlocke - Linoone just gave me a second King's Rock. I love this thing so much.
