Well, it makes sense.
They've driven away all Nintendo fans and most intelligent readers with their awful articles and troll podcasts.

Yep. I'm one of those. I liked the Matt/Bozon combo fairly well, but even in the heyday of the Wii, Matt & Bozon were still outnumbered and seen as lesser. When they left, the only remaining Nintendo apologist was Craig, and I was never a big fan of his style.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, Ace, you have a similar style to The_Legend_of_Dr_Tre from the old IGN boards... Did you ever run into him? Or are you him?

And people thought Retro making a new DKCR or a Zelda games was a waste of talent.
If this shit about Metroid and Starfox becomes true
I can't wait to see you guys crying your hearts out wishing it was a DKCR or Zelda game

the sad part is... I'll be crawling in the dirt with you guys :(

A Retro Starfox/Metroid crossover just sounds terrible. Give Starfox to Treasure or Platinum and just give Metroid back to Retro.

Oh about IGN btw... Nintendo should forget about E3 :(

Let me get this straight... They're more interested in the PS4, more interested in Sony's new IP and are anticipating two multiplatform games... but think Microsoft is going to win?

DERP?

I don't think the Starfox rumour is true but am I the only one that wouldn't be disappointed? I mean I guess I'd rather Retro make something totally original but that game described sounds like 2 full games in 1. I wouldn't complain.

But yeah, something original is more likey. Unless they try to make an action oriented FPS, in which case, that would be more disappointing than anything.

Not sure what MS or Sony have to gain by showing their next gen consoles this early, especially when their current hardware is still selling. They would basically be telling potential PS3/360 customers to hold off buying their hardware for 18 months or so. The Wii was already in a death spiral this time last year, and the facts about controller were pretty well known - so Nintendo had less to lose showing Wii U than MS or Sony does now showing their new consoles.

Serious question here: why are third parties so damn retarded with the game choices they make on what to bring to a new platform?

Perfect example is this talk of the Aliens game. I'm not saying it's going to be bad, it might be actually pretty good. But isn't from the same exact developer, coming Borderlands 2 in the fall? Probably as a game franchise, one that has a lot more notoriety?

I could say the same about companies like THQ and Ubi Soft. Instead of the new Future Soldier game or whatever, Ubi Soft is bringing over a version of a free to play PC game? THQ is bring Darksiders 2 over. It's best selling original game franchise is Saints Row, and they just had a new one come out last year and have an expansion to that game coming out this fall. Did it ever occur to them to, I don't know, maybe bring THAT GAME over in a GOTY edition for Wii U?

This is the same shit that happened with the Wii. Rockstar brought a Bully port over, and fucking Manhunt 2 and wondered why it didn't sell. You could have expended LESS effort to made an upgraded port or collection of the old GTA games for Wii and sold a TON more.

This is the sort of logic that seems to escape these companies, then they wonder why their bottom line is atrocious. Look at last year, Sonic fits Nintendo systems like a glove - but they made a new Sonic game and it didn't even come out on Wii because apparently in it's design stage it wouldn't fit the power of the Wii. So you're telling me your design was so closed that you intentionally cut off your best selling version of the game and didn't have that in mind when you made it?

The lunacy just boggles the mind. It's amazing to me how horrible the planning is for these companies that they just need to move their fingers to make a successful game on the console, and instead they chop off their arm.
And now you know why most third parties are bleeding millions.

How can anyone still anticipate the MS conference at this point?

They think MS is still all about the hardcore, despite not being so for a few years now and specifically stating they would mostly focus on services at E3.

No real reason to single them out. I just checked the big sites (Game Informer, Giant Bomb, 1up etc) and none of them have reported it.

Wait, you people are still surprised by this? Not a single one of the big gaming news sites have put the slightest effort in building and maintaining a healthy nintendo orientated fanbase.

How absolutely stupid is this from a business standpoint? its like they are refusing money from "lesser" costumers lol.

Anyone remember IGNs nintendo podcasts with Daemon and company? Good god those podcasts lol

Nintendo doesn't pay them enough money apparently.

Hopefully Nintendo assisting with their middleware will make up for it!
lol =(

Pretty confident one or both of the companies (Sony and Microsoft) will tease their next-gen system at the end of their conference. No name or pic of the console or anything, but a tease (probably UE4 demo). Hell, I'm pretty sure IdeaMan actually quasi-guaranteed that at least one of them would not too long ago but no one really said anything.

Still expect Nintendo to "win" E3 by a mile. That gearbox interview was pretty awesome and nice to see.

I've known it for a while, I just am amazed why history has repeated itself over and over though.

These people make a shitload of money to make these decisions and have no idea what they're doing.

This goes for pretty much anyone that heads up a large company.
They're usually so far removed from what is happening that they make the worst decisions possible.

This is also part of the reason that Iwata is such a good president. He's from the business and is still extremely active in it.

Yep yep yep!
And, with a few notable exceptions, I would bet that we're largely going to see a continuation of this generation's financial trends.

Which leads me to ask.. who's gonna have to sad honor of starting the "List of Studios Closed Since 2012" thread?

Why would they need to pay them though? Third parties are spending MORE on crappy products, or just products no one will buy, to release them for Nintendo systems than spending LESS just porting popular versions of completed games to the system. It's lunacy.

Who at Rockstar thought it was a good idea to develop Manhunt 2 for Wii. I mean really? Doing that cost more than just porting a GTA collection, or an upgraded San Andreas with extras or ... whatever! And it sold a fraction of what it would have.

THQ is in the shitter and has pledged support for Wii U, but that doesn't include the ONE franchise that has sold great for them.

It'll likely be too late for SR3, but we'll definitely see SR4 on the Wii U.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I think this polling marks my end of visiting IGN.
I have been mainly visiting them to laugh at them recently.

I probably get lynched for saying this, but doesn't the talent at Retro studios get a little bit overestimated? People tend to think they can create awesomeness from nothing, but don't they still have to proof where establishing a new and original game is concerned?

Between Go Nintendo and Nintendo World Report, I've been quite up-to-date on Nintendo news without having to give the big guys clicks. And I've been a bit happier.

I included a "Media Douchebaggery" tile on my Bingo Card, but now I'm thinking it's a given. I should just mark it out now and get it over with.

Well, this is true for any studio.
However, Retro certainly has a flawless track record so far (it's only 4 games, certainly, but it's some of the best games around).
They have proven that they can make awesome experiences, and this trend will likely continue.

Well the Batman game from last year is coming out, a SR3 port with it's coming expansion included would sell pretty well I bet. Could it do any worse than Darksiders?

I think DS2 was chosen because it's been compared to Zelda so much, so they really wanted it on the Wii U.
We still might see an SR3 announcement at E3, though.
2011 was just kind of a glimpse of big games.

Here's the problem I have with you guys bitching over this crossover if it turns out to be true.

This is Retro Studios. Not Team Ninja.

No studio puts tons of care into Metroid more than Retro Studios.

Retro did a brilliant job of reviving the Donkey Kong Country series.

Again, stop treating this project like it's a Team Ninja project. It's a Retro Studios project.

I might not be able to resist visiting them after E3 and saying "So guys, how did that PS4 reveal you all wanted work out for you?"

To a degree, I think you're correct. And yes, they do still need to prove they can hang when doing new and original stuff. On the other hand, Retro's been asking for that very opportunity from Nintendo for years and been turned down constantly, hence the continued loss of employees.

So yeah, they do need to prove it, but they also need to get that green light first.

In this last gen especially, it has become a bit of a 3rd-party entitlement that hardware makers help foot the cost on things like marketing, publishing, or just platform exclusivity.

The source of this entitlement is spurred by trying to subsidize rising production costs, which most developers will never admit to, or change by doing something smart and scaling back.

With Epic saying that "they want to drag the industry into the next generation", I don't think many have learned their lesson.

Yeah I mean, I really love the games Retro did, they are really really great games, but doing an original game from scratch seems to me something totally different then taking a fresh look an an already established franchise (which is also something not easily done of course, but it seems to me something very different). But like you said, they also need to be given a chance by Nintendo for that of course.

IGN's audience is so far removed from the average GAFfer it's unreal. These polls are an interesting if not too revealing look at the bog standard core gamer though.
oh who am i kidding, that poll was answered by 13 year olds

It seems they have it. I guess it just took Nintendo finally realizing that they need certain types of games to fill a gap they formerly couldn't fill.

It doesn't seem like anyone is doubting Retro's ability to create an awesome experience.

Folks seem to be more confused at the middleground they will find to make these two universes mesh well.

IGN's readership is even removed from the "core gamer" though.
They exist in their own little sheltered bubble, much like people who only watch Fox News.

Whoa whoa whoa.
Did you just let is slip that Retro's game is a new IP?!

So it sounds like John Harker might have heard something about this too...

I don't think he really knows.

I really don't see many people buying the batman game, it'll be so old news by the time its out methinks they planned on releasing wii u much earlier originally, as for saints row hasn't there already been hints at SR 4 ON wii u

It's definitely very odd that they wouldn't be covering this considering how little info we've had about the Wii U since it was originally unveiled last year. And the type of power that it's packing has been one of the biggest question marks about the system. So it's a pretty big deal when a major dev comes out and says that it's more powerful than current consoles and that their game will look the best on it. It's not like there's been much news in general from gaming in recent days, so they should all be reporting it.
