What do you guys make of the new analog positioning???

Significant improvement, subtle improvement, liked it better before???

Or can't tell until you use the dam thing???

one of the biggest controller innovations of all time moving the dpad and face buttons in a diagonal alignment to the sticks !!!

just like the gamecube and virtual boy controllers

anyone thats played metroid prime knows how awesome the setup was

I think the guy was just completely oblivious to the fact that there was an NDA on the controller for the dev-kit. He probably assumed that since they showed it at E3 last year there was no reason that he couldn't post a picture of it on twitter.

I really doubt it, those changes on the DRC were documented and available for developers to see only in a specific, restricted, and under NDA frame (warioworld and maybe direct Nintendo to studios channels of communication). Everything, even basic usb ports on the dev kits, are secret and under NDA, otherwise you would have seen people taking pictures of the dev kit and leaking a bit of them for example.

The guy knew about the NDA, it's obvious. It's just a mistake, it often happens on social networks. Or he did it willingly, i doubt it.

Thanks for the quick update. Hearing 2 controllers working at the same time is great. Can't wait to see what they come up with.

As for the leak all I can say is what could he have expected? It was bound to be leaked sooner or later by a QA tester :p

for the document stating that the Wii U will support 2 DRC, it's "just" a document, and rather old, from august. Representatives of Nintendo, like one from Canada, said also a while ago that the system will support multiple controller. Basically, it's not official and third-parties developers didn't witnessed such support through the development process of their projects.

It was accompanied by a message right ? "look at what we just got" ? Maybe it's a filter problem, he wanted to show the picture to a very strict inner circle of people.
When my company was working on 3DS games before its final 2010 E3 reveal, we weren't even allowed to discuss the system within the company. We were told to use code words whenever referring to the device among the team, even in private email between team members. When the company actually managed to get our first dev kit, it had to remain in a sealed room with no windows, and the door had to be locked at all times. This is all part of the NDA Nintendo makes everyone working on the project sign - normally the company lawyers sign one NDA binding the company at large (that works with the NDA the employees signed when they started working there), but for pre-system launches, each individual developer has to sign them.

Even if he meant to only show it to a strict inner circle, he was breaking the rules.

Nintendo of Canada redeemed.

Well I mean between then and now, I'm pretty sure they must have tested it thoroughly to get it working. Otherwise, it would be pretty disappointing.

Yeah but it would be less dramatic to share the picture with, let's say, other Wii U developers colleagues that still don't get the updated DRC, that making it publicly available to the world lol.

And as you said, every people involved is concerned so he was aware of the NDA applied to this controller.

Well, the main surprises are still left for E3 i guess :)

If I email Nintendo a picture of the controller, what do you think their response will be? I need to amuse myself somehow and I thought this would be somewhat entertaining. Will I be taken out by Ninjas?

Has the haptic screen been de-confirmed?

How can you de-confirm something that was never confirmed?

Yes.

Honestly, you'll likely just get an automated response, since your email won't pertain to anything specifically.

I wouldn't if you value your life. In fact, you probably are already dead by the time I'm sending this message just because you posted that...

I don't remember any scary instructions or specific NDA signings when I was a tester working with Wii devkits prior to launch. As this leaker is (was...?) also a tester, he probably had it drilled into him that everything Wii U related has to remain under wraps, but yeah he also probably thought "this controller is known about so there is no problem if I show people we have one".

Who says they ever got it working? The docs people are talking about, if I remember right, mentioned a couple calls in the programming libraries to enable a second controller. That could very well be future-proofing the dev libraries.

It was clearly willingly.

Did you also have to promise your first born?

but surely to him its obviously a new updated version so he should've had some sense

I never said that they got it working, but if they were trying to get it to work this whole time, I'm pretty sure they've gotten somewhere. According to IdeaMan, if Nintendo has gotten it to work, it's not official and third parties aren't aware of it.

That's nice to know they're potentially future-proofing the dev libraries in case they do eventually get two DRCs to work together.

I want to touch this...!!

perv!

Maybe, for all we know it was the first time he ever saw a Wii U controller up close (TT have multiple projects and its probably only now that QA is really gearing up if Lego City Stories is a launch title, so in theory he may have been working on other consoles until today!)

We gave you poutine!

You. Are. Welcome!

Didn't know you were Canadian!! Which city?

You also gave us Justin Bieber.. so we're waiting for an apology.

Sorry, we waive responsibility for that, the US (read: Usher) took him and made him into something horrific. That's on you folks.

Now Nickelback, on the other hand? We're giving you all of our Alberta oil in apologies for that one and opened our western shores to more US oil tankers in apology. So consider it all forgiven.

Yes, an internal document from NoE says that the Wii U is capable of using 2 Wii U controllers at a time.
Other than that:

IdeaMan was suppose to post a thread about the controller changes, but he got one upped by the leak. He still has another big gun to release, though.

More GTA5 for Wii U speculation.

Having 2 wii u controllers working at the same time does not mean full streaming over the internet

so 2 wii u controllers streaming at the same time for local play only

...
?
Um, do what now?
Yes, this would be in reference to local play. I'm not sure what streaming over the internet has to do with it.

clearly the Wii U Tablets can project holograms of the players that you are playing with online. That's what the little square under the dpad is for! MEGATON.

Assuming this Metroid X Starfox rumour is true.

Do you think Nintendo is smart merging two semi-popular franchises, and possibly creating a game which is even more popular?

I wouldn't except for the fact that Retro would be doing it.

They haven't made a bad game yet and I see no reason they would slip(py) up.

Nintendo did a pretty bad job merging a semi-popular franchise with a brand new one with a highly-praised-at-the-time developer (Starfox Adventures)...

I'm holding out hope that this is not the final design and they manage to reduce the width. Also, I really wish they'd swap the right stick and buttons. I can't think of a single Nintendo made Gamecube game where the c-stick was the primary function for right hand. .... Wait... There was Luigi's Mansion, but everything else seemed to use the buttons as the primary control. Also, why not compromise and use the slider on the right? Aiming is an up down left right manuever, so how is a slider suboptimal for FPS aim control?

Also, bring back GCN style buttons while they're at it.

Fuck yes, sticks are back! Yeah I'm late, but great news.

Pretty much less intuitive accuracy with no real vertical clearance whatsoever. Sticks are better for FPS control, but we really should be clamoring for the Wiimote/nunchuck option if we're seriously interested in superior shooter controls.

And I agree on the GCN buttons, that would be cool.

Wha??? Aiming is an up-down-left-right maneuver? I use every degree a game gives me when controlling the camera in shooters. And why are you comparing against Gamecube games, I'd say a very large percentage of PS3/XBox 360 games use the right stick as a primary control.

I'm also late on the controller redesign only 'cause I was at work. Though during my lunch break I checked GAF and saw it and started talking it up with my coworkers. I do like the Curvatious design to the back now. Looks way more comfortable, but might turn off Tablet enthusiasts....as if...but even then. Though I like the new placements for the sticks and facebuttons, since seems more comfortable, I'm still disliking that the controller is white, and that it pretty much confirms the name "Wii U" is here to stay (sigh) I dread the upcoming Holidays at Best Buy with uninformed Consumers now....

unless it is done really really well it will be absolutely terrible. I am a fan of both, yet I would be less likely to buy a crossover title than two separate games.

Plenty will agree.

neither franchise is popular enough for a crossover to increase popularity unless the core fanbases are on board. Nintendo could simultaneously alienate both....

Ok, I'll take your opinion on the stick vs. slider (never used one myself), but the Xbox 360 also has the right-stick below. So what's the reasoning now for putting it on top for Wii U? Other than for symmetry?

I wanted to post this last night, but apparently you guys already know part of this through a different source

p.s. Can someone link to the NOE documentation on the 2 uMote usage?

I've been trying to fastforward through this thread to makle sure it wasn't already mentioned, but using autopager, it took a really really long time to get to the end.

But anyway, my friend Caterkiller (UE4 source) had a very interesting visitor [no, I can't even hint at who this visitor is or works for], but the visitor had some things to share.
1) 2 uMotes at the same time is possible (but you already know that now)
2) Farcry 3 is NOT coming to Wii U (I know we speculated that the previous footage could've been Wii U.... but apparently it wasn't)
3) Assassin Creed III on Wii U is the same game as the PS360 version. If there were any extras or special features, they were not brought up.

Unforunately mu phone was on silent so I wasn't aware until afterwards, but if I hadn't been so far behind on this thread and pre-occupied, I would have at least gotten this posted up last nite when it was still 100% fresh news.

yeah it's going to be tough playing nba 2k or any fast moving action game requiring face buttons
