This article refutes the violence aspect, and it's not the first. The data there is very clear. Videogames do not cause nor encourage real-world violence on a large scale. On an exception basis, they're a scapegoat, and sometimes one not even based on circumstantial evidence.

As for the addiction aspect, I believe there's something there. But I don't believe that the risk of videogame addiction - to the point of neglecting work, school, relationships, etc - is any worse than any of the thousand things it's possible to be addicted to. It's just one more thing a person needs to learn to balance in our complex world. It's definitely not a crisis.

There's a very good point to be made here but they fail because a) the "ruining a generation" thing is absurd hyperbole and b) the Breivik stuff. Then I decided it was yet another piece of sensationalist bullshit that does nothing to help people like me who know there's an issue but have nowhere to go to get help with it. They're only making things worse.

For people who really want help with video game or porn addiction, I recommend listening to Episode 158 of the Pickup Podcast. It's about a website called yourbrainonporn.com, which helps people suffering from a multitude of issues caused by porn addiction (ED, social anxiety, need for extreme/kinky porn for arousal, etc.). The podcast also mentions video game addiction as another subset. The whole discussion is based on science and should be the resource you're describing.

The fact that violent crimes in the US have plummeted during the rise in popularity of videogames is an argument that "makes no sense"?

I never agree with people who try to paint causal relationships between negative behaviour and videogames, but looking at myself and others around me - and trying to be honest with myself - I think I do believe in arousal addiction, or stimulation addiction.

People can't unhook themselves from wherever it is they get it. Be it games, facebook, porn, BBM... we network with each other so we can get stimulation on a permanent drip. I've no doubt that there are probably social consequences to that.

What about some of my female friends that are (or have been) addicted in an obsessive way to facebook games? Or females that also get addicted to "normal" videogames? Or one of the many other things that can attract both genders in a unhealty way? Maybe we should start to think about people as individuals, with different issues, different situations.

There are so many variables, and of course its always easy to generalize by focusing only on one thing, losing track about everything else.
