Resistance Burning Skies |OT| Extinguishing the Flames of Vitality

Been playing it off and on in conjunction with Dragons Dogma. Only SP so far, which seems a bit rough around the edges. However, the shooting is more then competent and the Vita's big screen really help sell the visuals. Touch stuff so far is nicely used and not overbearing.

The only problem so far is while the shooting is alright, a lot of the gameplay scenarios have just been bland. It also doesn't help that the small size of the adventure seems like its limiting the scale of the 'invasion'. Of course I'm only halfway through though.

That's pretty much the entire game. The controls work great and the weapons are fun to use. Everything else is average or below average, but you can still enjoy it somewhat.

It's one of those games that is more fun than it is good.

I've been playing some multiplayer (in the rare chances I actually get in the game), and I noticed that none of the multiplayer maps feel like Resistance at all. Many maps from the Resistance console game have a lot of Chimeran technology and things like that (and some maps are entirely Chimeran in environment), but all of these maps are just normal maps, the likes of which would be on any non-Resistance military game.

Are there simply maps I haven't seen yet, ones which show direct Chimeran influence? I've seen tiny bits in some maps, but hardly at all.

So how many shots does it take to kill someone in MP? I've hit people like six times and not have them go down, and other times I hit them with a single burst with the Hunter Rifle (or w/e the three shot burst medium-ranged rifle is called) and they drop. I'm never sure if it's lag or something else.

You know, I agreed with this at first. But now, after having played a bit more multiplayer, my hands are starting to cramp and I find myself trying to improvise positions to keep my hands from seizing up. I'd say the biggest culprits are attempting to sprint while moving through the environment and holding down the L and R buttons while moving and aiming for extended periods of time.

Platinum'd! Last level was really good looking.

I enjoyed it. The game really feels like a Resistance title.

Yeah, thats still a shame to hear. Having a fun time though. I betcha Killzone will look amazing on this thing.

I played the game through headphones last night for the first time, and my goodness, the sound is ever more noticeably bad! Everything is so muffled and terrible sounding. I'd love to know what happened there.
I played multiplayer with my vita hooked up to my surround sound system. The guns definitely sound better with some actual bass, but they are still really weak sounding. The problem is there is like zero positional sound whatsoever. If someone is shooting, it sounds the same no matter where they are, at least as far as I can tell. Also I didn't notice footsteps for any other players. Hopefully they can fix some things with a patch and maybe add a mode or two.

Really enjoying the game. I'm playing it with a Jambone Jambox Bluetooth speaker, and the experience is very console like. Dat shotgun..

If your having trouble. Switch to the mauler and use it's secondary fire. With unlimited ammo and the weapon cool down perk it pretty much breaks the game.

Yeh thanks man. It was running out of ammo (didn't have that perk) that did it, I managed to get through those rooms by eventually learning the Chimera spawn points. Finished the game, easiest platinum ever for me.

Multiplayer seems really fun at the moment as people are still learning the maps. Great, great, great game that just felt rushed to press. Really glad I bought a Vita for it.

How did the Chimera unbury an entire conversion tower in just two days?

I'm still confused about the whole thing. I've finished Resistance 1, 2 and Burning Skies. I've made my way through half of three and I'm still not sure how this works. Are the Chimera from space? Why is there shit already underneath the ground? Why did they start with Russia? Was it a Russian experiment?

Maybe I should just check the wiki.

Oy, it's complicated.

My understanding is that the Chimera are originally a spacefaring race but got into a war with something "else" on Earth and were wiped out in terms of their earth presence. The original Chimera were called "pure chimera" or something. The group came to Earth in the 20th century on an asteroid-like object (I believe linked to the tunguska event) and hence everything kicked off. The Chimera wanted to reconnect with the Pure Chimera of their homeworld by opening a wormhole or something. It's not super clear what they are considering Insomniac has just sucked ass at building the lore into the game, but this is what I understand.

I'd read the wiki but the wiki is white-on-black and that is unacceptable for any modern website.

I think that both of Sony's big FPS franchises have completely failed in building up any sort of coherent "lore". That's one big thing that Bungie and MS got right with Halo. Even if some people dismiss the story, there's a lot of work put into world building that franchise.

Well, I think they have the same problem honestly.

Resistance and Killzone both have really interesting worlds, for different reasons. Alternate history is neat. There's just so little in the games. But I think the same is true of Halo. Unless you count those stupid terminals. Where you can stop and actually read text.

The story in Halo 3 is far more embarrassing than anything in Resistance. Unless you like Spinchter People.

More enjoyable than it should be, considering how many failures this game has. Overall, an average to poor game made better by very good portable FPS controls and gunplay. If you like FPS games on a console, and you have a vita, it's not a bad pickup.

Bring on Gravity Rush!!

Realoading/restarting sections with multiple mobs propably. I just did a NG+ to get the trophy.
Yep. There are two sections in the final level where you can die and respawn/restart right before these types of enemies. That is what i did. I didnt do it on purpose, but there was one place i had a bit of trouble
(there is one room where it comes like 6-7 enemies at you at once, and one of these eneimes is an Impaler. I died maybe around 7 times at this place)

The lore that was built in R1 is was amazing. Shame they basically pushed it to the side. The rise of
feral Chimera
in R3 was pretty cool though.

Just beat it, solid 8.

SP took me around 7 hours on Hard. Had a ton of fun with it, sound was bad,and graphics could have been much better. Other than that though, weapons were great, shooting was tight and fun, I liked the storyline better than Resistance 2(never played 3), the final level was actually really fun,(so much ammo!) pacing was good, overall fun experience.

I also am about a level 15 or so in multiplayer, the multiplayer is a blast, and it is kind of surreal to have this kind of experience on a handheld device. It is not the deepest multi, basically you unlock weapons and weapon upgrades at different levels. The modes are standard but fun, especially infection mode. Maps are well done as well, but hopefully there will be more as DLC. I also love the meta game of getting infected Via Near for in game bonus xp and such. Cool concept.

Overall very glad I pulled the trigger and bought this one. Whoever the reviewer was that gave it a 2 was an absolute troll, no way around it. They should be banned from the Gaf for such blatant hit collecting nonsense. Sure it could have used a bit more polish, however I can easily recommend this to any Vita owner.

Multiplayer reminds me a lot of an arena shooter and I'm only playing deathmatch because of that. It's barebones but really fun and perfect for a portable drop-in and out style of play. Sewers and Streets maps are both good fun. Best FPS on a handheld, no exceptions.

The infection thing is pretty cool; get 2x xp for 4 hours etc. Really makes it more addictive than it should be.

That said, the shotgun is the most annoying weapon ever. Especially for players below level 7. I'm not sure if it breaks the game, but damn it comes close.

I just played a ton of multiplayer and I have to say I really like it. No jumping while sprinting is kind of stupid but I don't see why they wouldn't be able to fix things like that, that is if enough people actually buy the game and the studio stays afloat (I really hope they do).

But one thing I noticed that many of the MP maps are actually graphically pretty impressive, some of them moreso than the single player levels. I don't know what it is, but the lighting seems a lot better and there are a bunch of extremely impressive shaders, like bumpy glass that's nowhere to be seen in the single player. It all seems like they had to cut a shitload of content from the single player for unknown reasons. Almost all of the SP levels just look unfinished with flat textures and flat lighting.

This guy has a certain criteria, he's not easy when giving higher scores. He gave Gravity Daze a 6,5. I think that needs to be taken into consideration. He doesn't sound like a troll, he just has a high standard it seems. I think that is needed and should be respected for the people who are looking for experiences that are impressive and unique instead of safe and barely above average.

Anyways, I tried the demo yesterday, after having another playthrough with Resistance 2. Resistance 2 was played for too long yesterday and I kind of got a bit bored of that, made it up to chapter 4. So I wasn't looking forward to Burning Skies but still wanted to try it. The controls are great, it feels like you're more in control and it's more satisfying than Resistance 2. Also is it me, or it feels like secondary ammo of weapons are more easy to use with the touchscreen and therefore more handy? I find touchscreen to work really well with the game. Also the way the story is told is more involving and interesting than the second resistance game and a bit more than the first one. When you're in the action as it happens and you have all those characters around you. The music sounds better than previous Resistance games (haven't played 3 and PSP version yet). The graphics are a bit bad, but I'm not a person who cares too much if it plays well. The AI is stupid as well and the setpieces feel very typical. I'm not sure if the game is worth getting, but it might be better to get once it gets a huge price drop. The gameplay might be satisfying but it's a lot of money to drop to have a barely above average game.

The way you upgrade weapons seemed cool in the demo. How is it in the full game?

Mutiplayer deathmatch games are frankly addicting. I play couple hours straight once started.

Having said that the shotgun is simple overpowered. It can kill me in 1-2 shots even at a distance while my machine guns hardly wobble the opponent.

Hope there are rebalancing patch and additional match modes in the near future.

Not bad first effort Nihilistic....

Coming towards the end of the game and, while I'm still having fun, the setting and locations are starting to get overly-familiar now, having played all the other games in the series.

Played a bit of multiplayer and it's pretty great. Definitely something I'll be spending more time with once the campaign is done.

I've been enable to play online since yesterday. I join a game, see a list of 8 players... they disappear a few at a time, then I get a match was lost error.

Anyone here can give me some tips on beating the chapter 2 boss? Im at the last section I think, and can't really figure out what I should do.

Halo3 really bummed me out. I think the campaign in H2 is the best of the series. H2 featured some really impressive scenarios, and expanded the narrative in some interesting ways. H3 killed all that momentum through reliance on Flood nonsense.

I am having fun with the title. Destructoid's reviewer is crazy to give it a 2 out of 10. This is a 3rd tier title that should be getting scores in the 6-7 out of 10 range. It's not a AAA caliber game (i.e. think Super Mario 3D Land or the PSP God of War games). It's not a solid AA caliber game either (i.e. Uncharted: GA), but it's one step below that.

Also, I don't think it's quite as generic as people are saying, go play The Conduit and you'll see the true definition of Generic. I think the art style and setting are kinda interesting and there are some cool set pieces and the guns are cooler then the vast majority of shooters out there.

Some more polish could have gone a long way with the reviews in my opinion. Heck I bet if they simply had fixed the gun sound effects, allowed you to jump when you're running, and fixed the poorly compressed cut scene videos the review average would have been a full point higher. I know these sound like little things but I think in the mind of reviewers all of them combined is what led to such low scores.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Made the game feel low-budget and rushed.

I just played a few online matches for the first time. The level design is uninspired, but it feels really good playing an online fps in a handheld. This will definitely do until something better comes.

Yeah, it gives me a lot of hope for a future better FPS. They seem to work great on the system.

Finished the campaign off yesterday. Have to say that I really enjoyed myself with it, despite the last boss (as well as the lead up to it) was pretty frustrating. The setting is getting a little too familiar after playing all the other games in the series, but the guns are as great as ever and it's the touch controls work well for the most part. Really nice playing a dual-stick FPS on a handheld as well.

Next up, more MP and chasing down that Platinum!

Wanted to buy the game yesterday ( Holland ) but it's a gobsmacking 49,99 euro's. What the hell is Sony thinking? I liked the demo, but the game will have to wait :/

Still really enjoying the game, about halfway through the SP and played some MP as well, It's a lot of fun over all and is much better than some of those lack-luster reviews.

So what the census. Is it worth $40?

I platinumed it on one playthrough that took about 5 hours, and I'm shit at games. I probably won't be returning to the campaign.

However, the multiplayer is incredible solely for the novelty of having a true portable arena shooter. Yes it's barebones multi but it is hella fun. For $40 you get a proof-of-concept handheld fps, and a really great little multiplayer component. I'd say it's worth it.

Where? Likely not Sony that set that price, but the store. In my experience mediamarkt is usually fairly close to Sony's price. Online I think the game is 35 euro? Since you already downloaded the demo, I think that all you need is an unlock key?
