STEAM announcements & updates 2012 Thread 2 - Bad Rats Daily Deal for next 6 months

Still intrigued by the awesome sales on Gamefly today (75%+10% for many, highly doubt Steam will match that), but I haven't been able to find confirmation as to whether there's any Gamefly-specific DRM or activation required. (My migrated D2D purchases still do.) Once I download the game's installer, do I need the Gamefly client at all?

Better hope Gamefly isn't bought by another company who subsequently disables the installation authentication servers. ...like Gamefly did with my copy of SWAT4.

Well, that's what I'm wondering, are there Gamefly authentication servers? I've heard some reports that there aren't and the games function just like the retail versions. If not, then that's not a concern.

Then you only have to worry about the GFWL servers and Securom servers and Solidshield servers being up...

Outside of the other issues with this idea raised, I'm not sure Valve could actually go do that. They could with their own games, but I don't think they could do it with everyone else's. If I am, say, Ubisoft or Square-Enix, I don't want my games released from authentication servers because the retailer has financial trouble.

If Valve were to go bankrupt, a store like Steam is a valuable asset and they would have no trouble finding a buyer.
If this is true I imagine it's something that's part of the contracts made with selling games on Steam. I also imagine that if true would explain the redundant DRM games keep applying: Should the servers ever go down they still have some sort of protection there for their games, though there's the obvious question of how much said protection matters at that point. Certainly your example of Ubisoft shouldn't really have that much issue: many of the games are either saddled with DRM or were DRM free to begin with outside of Steam and some other DD services.

I played a ton of games on other services like Impulse and picked them up again in Indie bundles.

look here is what the graph will show for most people:

- I own a lot of games
- I haven't played all of them
- 1-3 games take most of my gaming time
- I like pretty pie charts showing off my steam collection and feel that everyone should know about this

Man hoping for some Arma 2 love during the sale.
Really want to see how much latency will kill Dayz for me, so want some cheap remorse :/

I was actually surprised to see it show that I've played so few of my games which I'm finding hard to believe because I feel like I've at least tried them all out for ten minutes or something. I just think it's funny to see how much of a persons library is ignored.

Got my eye on that as well. And like you, latency will more than likely be an issue so getting it so cheap won't bother me.

Fray finally works now, but I couldnt test it yet. It also still seems like the servers might be a bit too strained. People get randomly kicked from the chat server.

A few immediate impressions after reading the tutorials though:

- While its turn based MP, there is a time element to it, since being the first to end a turn will give you a bonus for your characters
- 4 player deathmatch is the only available mode at the moment (7 kills to win). While there is a wide range of possible squad setups (maybe even equipment configurations), the basic gameplay options are rather limited.
- Absolutely no SP content. Not even training missions, which is bad form in my opinion. You can't even "try" things without a time constraint due to point 1.
- Tutorials are completely barebones and are not even close to explaining the game. Lots of missing sections. Clearly an afterthought that was just pushed in right before the launch.
- There is a very in depth upgrade system for each class, which in itself looks fun, but also greatly weighs down on new players who dont yet have upgrades. I couldnt try them yet, but it seems likely that new players will have a hard time getting into the game against levelled ones.
- The match making system is rather unsmart, since they tried to keep it as close to "usual" FPS matchmaking as possible without considering their own genre. FS gave you a quick option to invite every player who might want to play. Here players need to go into a server list, to check for and open up games, which greatly reduces the open games at a time.
- You need to stick to one game after you started it. Exiting will result in a loss, which means:
a) The advantage of turn based play is moot since you need to start and finish a match in one sitting, and
b) You can only ever have 1 game going, which also means there are way, way less matches available than in FS. I had 40 people on the server, which gave me 1 game to play if I was lucky. In FS 40 people on the server mean you can instantly play 10 games at the same time.

Except for graphics, the own squad setup and the 4 player deathmatch mode, Frozen Synapse wins in every regard. Going to post some actual gameplay impressions after I got to playing it, though, but I definitely do not like the vibe I am currently getting from this game.

Hey Evilore likes stats, maybe you should integrate that into the Frontpage design. PIE CHARTS EVERYWHERE

Yes guys, let's stop with the stats, let's get back to asking the same fucking question over and over about the summer sale. Let me answer that question, WE DONT KNOW, ONLY VALVE DOES.

To be fair, the thread title itself was supposed to prevent that from happening, but it just plain didn't work.

Well to be fair, almost no one loved FS for the SP levels. Many came for SP and stayed for the MP, which was a feat in itself, since I know I prefer SP most of the time these days.

However, I see many, many, many issues with Fray without even starting to play it. I doubt I will be going off to recommend this game to everyone.

Edit: Added some more negative points I noticed

Yeah, not the best first impression for sure.

If you bought Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 but aren't interested in physical magic cards, feel free to send me your promo code =)

Next game on the list is...

AI War: Fleet Command

Its one of those top down x4 games where you have to micromanage a space empire. First impressions - slightly over whelming, I think I was destroyed within 10 minutes of playing as the enemy AI swamped me as I got to grips with how it all worked.

Think I best play the tutorial.

Yeah, the AI War tutorials are pretty much mandatory. Do all the beginner tutorials and the intermediate tutorial and that will give you all the information you need. I think it's a really good game and Steam tells me I've played it over 25 hours, but I've never finished a game. I always get overwhelmed (mentally, not by enemy forces... well sometimes) and give up. I'll accomplish that goal one of these days.

I'll get it eventually and PM you the code since im far from where I could redeem them

How long will that work btw? Only the first week or something? Or EVERY purchase with the game?

I love it how Steam community says i now own 584 games (went up by 20 for no reason and i haven't bought anything), when i own 350 games. When is Valve going to fix this? And why does DLC count as a 'game'? Why is Magicka worth 15 games? Why isn't there a DLC tab on Steam community? Why? Why? Why?

I'm so happy there was still someone who hadn't seen that. :p

I thought it was a brilliant touch to have the logo that's been on Valve games forever, with the subtle creepy twist that no one would be expecting.

More importantly, who gives a shit? People can see what DLC you have? :(

I recently saw that as well in CS:Go, after pounding esc through it for so long and in so many games, I randomly let the game load.

My mouth opened at the speed of his head turning, freaked me out lol.

This game is great. I got it when it was originally released. It's probably not for everyone is it's just a twin-stick shooter, really, but I love the voxel graphics and the chiptune soundtrack is awesome. Last time I played it I remember it being pretty easy so I don't know if the game has been patched to be more challenging.

As for the talk about Steam sale dates and games getting released, that third Penny Arcade RPG is supposed to come out next Monday. Just something to consider since that Virus game got pushed back.
