Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation.
It is used to distribute games and related media online, from small independent developers to larger software houses. Steam also has
community features, automated game updates, in-game voice and chat functionality. As of December 2011, there are 1,488 games
available through Steam, and 35 million active user accounts.

You can send money directly to your steam account for later use on game purchases. GameStop has also collaborated with Steam to let
you buy gamecards from Gamestop to use on Steam. Both of these are useful if you do not want to deal with paypal or you need to keep
a budget on Steam sales.

Steam remote now lets you completely access your steam account to buy games, use community functions and start game downloads
away from your computer. (You must be logged onto the steam client for remote downloads to work)

Steam now has a mobile app for Android and iOS, you can participate in the Steam community wherever you go. Chat with your
Steam friends, browse community groups and user profiles, read the latest gaming news and stay up to date on Steam sales.

Coming soon/Valve time.

Downloaded LOTRO last night. I already had a starting character from about a year ago or so when I tried the game out, I'll give it a fair try now that it's integrated to steam.

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
Well, I wonder what the theme for the next Summer sale will be?

If there's one thing that EA didn't take into account while criticising Steam and Valve "cheapening IPs" it the fact that the likes of the Pototo ARG and the themed sales actually helps smaller developers gain mind-share with the gaming community. Just ask Tripwire, Hidden Path or Frictional if aggressive Steam sales has lessened the impact of their IP.

Anyway, rant over, great thread Mr Orange.

I am going to be even more frugal this summer sale, and probably stay under $50 bucks. So there better be some unmissable deals.

It'd be interesting if a running total was kept of all the money spent by posters across the threads duration

I'm sure the result would be terrifying

Note to Salsa/MRORANGE/anyone else involved in thread stuff: When the summer sale starts, I will lock this thread. When the summer sale ends, I will unlock this thread (don't need to make a "thread 3"). :)

noted;

I'll stick to doing STEAM announcements & updates threads & SalsaShark will probably do all the major sale threads for this year. (I would like to do next year's Christmas one - 2013/14)

edit:

I found this funny:

We'd need a concurrent suicide watch thread once people see how much they've spent (and the number of games they have/will never play)

Game is good.

Tip for getting a bunch of free Turbine Points for anyone interested:

There's a quest that gives you 10 TP for a starting character, but it only works once per server. Luckily there are 29 servers. Start a dwarf, click the box for "skip new user tutorial" in character creation, then run down the mountain to the west and keep going until you reach a little plaza with a statue. Talk to the dwarf there and he'll give you a quest that awards you 10 TP to show you how the Turbine store works.

You're supposed to take the 10 TP, go to the store and buy the next section of the quest. Just don't do the second part of the quest and you keep the TP. TP is account-wide, so if you do this once on each server you can get up to 290 TP.

Also save your TP for quest packs (which are account wide) and the riding skill (which is character specific). Don't waste it on consumables or cosmetics. You'll earn a bunch of TP for Deeds (aka achievements) during gameplay, so by the time you get out of the Lone Lands you'll hopefully have enough TP to buy one of the quest packs. If not, roll a different race/class alt and play with them until you have enough.

Sweet, thanks for the tips!

Bought Splinter Cell Chaos Theory yesterday morning, played that all day. Ready for gaming again after 7-8 months of not really playing any. Not ready to spend a lot, though, which is why I'm waiting for Summer Steam!

hhmm, my computer won't be here in time for the sale, I'll have to buy everything from my laptop and then install everything in the new machine, will I run into any trouble doing that?

Sorry, Steam noob here and I didn't see this answered in the FAQ.

You can install everything on your steam account anywhere, as long as you log into Steam on that computer.

Also, you can't log in concurrently on multiple devices.

So no, not a single problem with the scenario you described.
