It's never dependent on just one title. Wii U needs the majority of the first batch of third party titles to sell (reach their targets) to attract more titles. That's the only way it will work. The PSP GTA's never sparked developer interest even with strong sales.

Just getting the game is not enough. Most people have ps360 already. They need to fix the online to match at least the ps3.

Just getting the same games and they look the same is not going to do anything.

Luckily thats not the case

I think that is a decent point. The problem is Nintendo did not announce any new 3rd party releases besides Mass Effect 3. If Nintendo had unveiled AC3, Aliens, and Darksiders at E3 I think the reaction would have been different.
Not sure what you mean by besides Mass Effect 3, I don't think anyone considers Mass Effect 3 to be "new" - but I would agree with the general sentiment.

That and Ubisoft had already been very public about supporting the Wii U.
Luckily thats not the case
By and large they do, thus far, look essentially the same. I don't think anyone is going to buy the Wii U specifically to play Arkham City or ME3 if they already have a PS360.

I meant games we did not know about before E3.
Yeah, I agree with the general sentiment.

But would go further and say they needed to announce games that weren't announced at all yet, rather than simply games that weren't announced for the Wii U - regardless of if they were multiplat or not.

They did do that with, for example, Rayman. But it's not a "big" title.

I've been researching the implications of the Wii U CPU's supposed lack of SMT. I was curious as to how being relegated to 3 threads would affect performance of game code and why Nintendo would settle for such a deficiency.

It dawned upon me that perhaps I've been misjudging the role of the CPU cores. Perhaps, like Wii, the OS will not run on the IBM CPU but on the ARM CPU, whatever that ends up being (Cortex A8 seems like a decent choice). This would free up resources so that the IBM CPU could focus entirely on game code.

I then came across the following discussion:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/758390/xbox-360-vs-ps3-a-processor-comparison/90#post_9027534

This is where someone w/ some programming knowledge can perhaps chime in, but going back to the Wii U spec leak right before E3, it might make sense. Setting aside "Network Routines" for the time being, could we strike the "Sound" and "User Input" threads from that diagram considering there will be dedicated silicon for those functions? That would leave us w/ the Graphics Thread and AI Thread getting their own cores (1 and 2 respectively, w/ Core 0 handling the Synchronization Routines). Perhaps Core 1 has a VMX/VSX extension for graphics acceleration. The ridiculously fat cache of that core (2 MB compared to 512 for each of the other 2) seems to indicate something very important is going on there.

Not saying it's an optimal scenario, but perhaps that is something similar to Nintendo's thought process on the matter.

Who cares about people who already own PS360s?
I dont get why that keeps being brought up.

They're meant to put the U in Wii U, according to Reggie as at E3 2011.

If Nintendo really hold that attitude, then to be frank, third parties are completely justified if they ignore it.

Are we just assuming now Nintendo wasn't being serious/lying about their intent to pursue that market? (Not that it was all that explicitly stated, of course)

I'll speak for myself and say that I think third party ports, while vital, are not the measure of whether to spring for a Wii U. It will be the first-party games, and the third-party titles will flesh out the library, and thus give an incentive to stay within the platform.

It's easy to think of games like COD or GTA being important, but Wii U could end up with a big 3rd party title that matters AND that we don't know about at this point

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Does Nintendo consider August to be a part of the Fall season?

WiiU is not getting enough credit for nabbing Assassin's Creed 3 for launch.
Before, people didnt expect it, now that WiiU has it, it has been marginalized.

Im curious which 3rd party game Nintendo needs to get on the WiiU that
it will be taken seriously as a multi-port console. I doubt its CoD. It might be GTA5.

This was such a good point it needed to be made three times... :p

GTA would definitely be a good start, but I think it will take more than one or two games.

Nintendo will reveal the release date and the price of the Wii U on a Nintendo direct after the releases of the 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros 2. It's so obvious. It could be on August or on September.

Who are the people who are buying ps3's and 360's?
People who already own those consoles?
Of course not.
Nintendo means they want to expand into that market.
Not per se people who already have bought consoles in that market.
Its people thinking about buying an HD console now having
three options.

That's a fairly "meh"/parched market segment at this point in the game, unless you're going to propose these people are the casuals from this gen looking for a more powerful Wii (not expanding, in that case). Would have been more viable two years ago, if the former.

They either go after the PS360 crowd or they don't. They have a head start on Orbis/Durango, why not use it?

I'll be a day one buyer. I love Nintendo, and while, yes, they have let the hardcore download the last couple console generations, I will always stand by their side. Just kinda wish the GamePad used a capacitative touch screen.

Possibly. In the case of those owning one but not the other.

But more prevalently, late adopters in this cycle. People who were still buying the PS2 in high quantities until somewhere around 03/09.

And people who are upgrading from the Wii.
Nintendo means they want to expand into that market.

I'm assuming you mean the "Wii upgraders" market, rather than the very late adopting 6th gen owners.

If you do mean those people, I'm going to agree with the poster above in that, that ship began sailing a while ago, probably around 2010/launch of Kinect.

Essentially, you're saying that Nintendo has no interest in competing with the PS4720. They're competing with their and other's current gen systems. They're not launching a new generation but entering the current one 6 years later.

In which case again, I can see why a third party would be justified if they ignored it.

Finally got approved :D Been following this threat since speculation V. Lots of good info and laugh over the time.

The only system I actually bought ON launch was the Wii. (Not counting gifts, which is how I used to get system...till the N64 xP). I got to say that the Wii has giving me PLENTY of good times. It brought back Punch-out, NES version still being my favorite game, if you put punch-out in front of me I'll start playing and never get tired of it...sadly I have never beaten Tyson :(.

Wii has actually giving me good single player experiences. Bless be the release schedule of Xenoblade, Zelda and The Last Story (European releases for Xenoblade and The Last Story that is). I finish one and the next one comes out a week after...best 5 months of gaming for me in a long time actually! (I imported Xenoblade and The Last story, reason of the release so close to when I finished the games). Add to that Metroid Prime 3 and Other M (ok, story was...kind of blah, but I enjoyed the gameplay actually) and many other games. On the multiplayer side I got Guitar Hero, Wii sports, Wii sports resort, Wii party, boom blox and more to enjoy with my wife and family, so it cover me pretty well in my gaming needs actually.

So if the Wii U adds some multiplatform games I missed (till I got a 360 this past december, thanks to a black friday deal having it for 99 dollars :D) to that equation, I plan to get the Wii U. Just not sure if on day one (budget being an issue), if Nintendoland is pack in, then count me in as my wife and I will get a blast out of it. ZombiU looks rather interesting actually, Assasins Creed 3 is interesting me (I am playing the second one right now actually). Mass Effect 3 maybe, I tried to avoid spoilers about the ending, but man is near impossible (more now that the extended cut is out). Batman...well I am not sold on it (since by then it'll be cheaper on the 360 most likely).

As for the Wii U's technical talk I'll leave that to the experts (which have been very helpful in me actually understanding more about CPU in general, not just Wii U). Though one technical question I always wonder is if in the future being able to use two wii pads will extend outside of just games. I am thinking more as using two wii pads to navigate the internet, example someone is watching Youtube while someone else is looking on amazon, etc, etc. I am doubtful that option will be available while someone is playing (as in someone playing a game, while someone else is watching Youtube in another pad). This is just a VERY hopeful dream of mine (assuming the Wii pad alone doesn't cost more than 99 that is), since they barely announce the Wii U support for two pads, so anything this advance would be a pipe dream xP

Man, sorry for the long post, but I have been lurking forever this thread and wishing I could reply to a lot of the things discuss here!

Same here, I'd love reading but was unable to reply and give any sort of input. I just hope you receive a better welcome than I did. ;o

We have EA in July. That should give a little something.

Ooooo, that's right. While I'm not interested in sports games, I am interested to see what EA has done. Hopefully they'll do some really good shit with the pad and people will be excited.

As an aside. I was wondering how Nintendo are going to announce big games from now on. I mean, they seem to ignore E3 for the most part for us enthusiast gamers so will they start doing it during Nintendo Directs? Be strange to sit down to a Nintendo Direct only to be greeted by a High Def, sexy as a mofo Metroid game.

Welcome! Hopefully others aren't too pessimistic, but it is a bit of a dead news time, so it's natural. Hopefully EA doesn't wait until July 31th to reveal their news...

Also, welcome to Daknight. I don't understand technical talk enough to talk about it either, which is why I haven't been too active in this thread. I just rely on people like bgassassin and wsippel (and lherre, of course).

I'm excited about Nintendo Land too. It should be fun since I loved Pac-man Vs. and the other GBA-GCN connectivity games. I hope they provide different maps for the Luigi's Mansion and Animal Crossing games, too.

Are all of you guys still buying the Wii U at launch?

I maybe am. I can't really decide whether I should or whether I should save it for Christmas though, so it'll depend on busyness. I'm going to graduate school after a break, so I want to wait and see a bit. If I decide it should be a Christmas gift, I'll probably tell my parents to pre-order it so it doesn't end up with them having to wait outside Target for it to open like the Wii fiasco. I felt bad for them...

I love Pikmin 3, NSMBU, and Nintendo Land (and like P-100), and that's enough for me to want the system at or soon after launch. Plus, I know more stuff is coming.

Thanks, it's great to be here. :)

I guess you're right, the lack of any revealing news might disappoint some users. I've been following the speculation threads since they started, and it was always a blast hearing any little tidbit whether it was proven false or not. I'm interested in the Wii U regardless of its power at this point, I mean, come on, who doesn't want to see Mario and Zelda in HD!? If the current gen ports are any indication, the Wii U looks to be a bit stronger than current gen, and I can't help but feel like we would be cheated if Nintendo skipped out on an entire console generation of first party titles.

Why, what happened to you?

And welcome. :)

Thanks! :) Oh, and nothing happened to me. I had a GAF account, but I didn't have posting privileges for over half a year, but it was definitely worth the wait. I'm guessing that's normal though.

That's a good and intriguing question. The bandwidth would need to be sufficient to support it (focusing strictly on wireless). I guess Wii U could act like a server and the controllers as dummy terminals since that's what they are anyway.

I actually like the idea from a business perspective.

Or two pads. ;)

In the end Nintendo can get away with making E3 more the the non-gamer who would only (maybe) care about info at that time and NDs for us since we would definitely pay attention. The Animal Crossing and 3DS XL announcements seem to be Nintendo's way of increasing the importance of NDs because those are some big announcements.

Are all of you guys still buying the Wii U at launch?

If I have the money and black is available. Both must be in place. I'll gladly wait for black if I have to.

Do you guys think I would get banned for using the late Acebandage's avatar?

I was going to ask you about that as I recognize you from the GT boards. But the paranoia in me says don't do it, haha.

Welp that's your problem right there. I would have to second BY2K's statement, seeing as GT is about a single step above 4Chan and Gamefaqs.

It would be a very attractive selling point that's for sure, I know it wouldn't be possible while gaming. I do feel if the system could double the amount of ram the OS has access to and can split it between pads, it would be feasible. However I do not know what kind of performance impact that would have on the CPU, or the corresponding applications.

If it is possible, it would be VERY wise of Nintendo to allow it and market that functionality heavily.

If it's $299 or below I'm pretty sure everyone who is regularly posting in this thread will get it at launch. Even with all the bitching and moaning, myself included.

I agree, I'll angrily have it walked to the nearest register, slap my money against the counter, and rage all the way home where I can finally play Nintendo Land in secrecy. ;P

Yeah, as a bullet point selling factor, it would be VERY attractive. It would help sell the two wii gamepad idea extremely well to a mass market. Like I mention, technology wise I don't know if what is rumor about the Wii U specs allow for this kind of function.

Nintendo of America Hires New Senior VP of Network Business

Seems like they have created a division to work on their digital enterprise.
I wonder if he had anything to do with Club Penguin...like how the hell did it get so big?
I've been researching the implications of the Wii U CPU's supposed lack of SMT. I was curious as to how being relegated to 3 threads would affect performance of game code and why Nintendo would settle for such a deficiency.

(snipped a bunch of stuff for size)
wsippel (or however his name is spelled) pointed out a while back that SMT isn't really needed if the cores are efficient to begin with. I only vaguely remember reading about it way back when Intel started using it, but basically it was cause their longer execution pipelines resulted in a lot of wasted idle time, kind of like a water tube with bubbles (empty space) in it. SMT was a way of filling in that idle time. If a chip has shorter pipelines then the "bubbles" are less of an issue since they get cleared out in fewer steps. I think OoOE plays a part too, like it can more efficiently put stuff into the pipeline in the first place if I'm remembering things right.

It'd be hilarious if they used the Wii U to start their "next gen" stuff like they did with Madden on 360 way back, this place would melt down. On the other hand it could result in messed up Madden as they get their next gen kinks out of the way.

And yeah I expect more online/PR only type of announcements, cause that's all that's needed these days really...and once the Wii U is out they can push more stuff through that too, whether the Nintendo Channel or plop it right on the home screen so you can see what other Miiverse people are checking out. They're gettin all social up in this bitch.
If it's $299 or below I'm pretty sure everyone who is regularly posting in this thread will get it at launch. Even with all the bitching and moaning, myself included.
I'm thinking I might go up to $350, but $299 would probably be in my "fuck it might as well" range. Kind of wondering if they'd try something like $329 to give them room for a small drop to $299 next year.

Are all of you guys still buying the Wii U at launch?

Maybe. If rumors posted on a certain banned site (where people go for nintendo news) are correct, we'll be seeing 2013 games at the September conference where they announce price and date. If true, that could potentially get me hyped enough to lay down an immediate pre order.
