Guy Says Rude Thing to Person, Gets Fired From Destructoid, Says More Rude Things

What funnier, that this proves that Felicia is untouchable when it comes to critique in the game industry, or that the only reason why anyone saw the tweets is because Veronica Belmont, who is the Felicia Day of tech culture bitched about it.

This wasn't a critique

Well, i hope Dtroid fires other people for being dicks to people, man and woman alike.

Regardless of your opinion of Felicia Day, she's no more or less special than any other person connected to gaming.

Nah, despite this thread, she's pretty popular and known. Her fanbase is quite large, and a pissed off fanbase can and will directly hurt Destructoid. Especially when that fanbase is a bunch of bored nerds.

I don't know why people in this thread are so confused. This really has nothing to do with her being a woman (but her being a woman sure did have a lot to do with the intern's callous "questions"), nor Destructoid pulling off their best white knight impersonation - this is strictly business.

Dunno how anyone can possibly defend this guy, his tweets were rude as fuck.

It's one thing to critique someone and be polite about it, but directly asking someone "Do you matter at all?" is pretty insulting. The guy was just being an asshole and Destructoid did the right thing.

i am of two minds about this:

-on the one hand, he acted unprofessionally.
-on the other, he is not wrong.
-on the other, his existence is about as if not more pointless than hers.

He's not necessarily wrong in calling out nerd/geek/gamer "personalities" like Day, but he definitely went about it in the most dickish way possible.

Perez just posted this to Wil Wheaton:

Going for total career suicide, I see.

I'm sure Destructoid has staff that have been rude to non-female and famous people on the Internet before.

I'm sure that guy is raging hard at what just happened to him and freaking out a bit mentally about what this means for his life, but wow does he ever need to get off twitter. All the stuff he's posting on his feed right now are really cementing any poor opinion anyone may have had of him after his initial comment about Felicia.

hahaha, those will wheaton tweets are hilarous, the very definition of a white knght

Considering he is a close personal friend of hers and has worked on numerous projects with her its called being a friend not white knighting.

I will say Perez was unprofessional. I will also say the industry and hardcore gamers have a tendency to fetishise women that flirt with geek culture (Felecia Day, Claudia Black, etc).

Glad the dude got fired. It's about time people start taking a little reaponsibility for their actions, even online.

I don't like Felicia Day that much, but I can understand what she does. She brings gaming to the masses, and has a lot of fans who apparently appreciate her kind of coverage. It's a certain audience that probably does not overlap at all with the audience at Destuctoid.com.
There is no need to belittle and insult her in a public manner like this. I bet Felicia Day has introduced more people to gaming than all of Destructoid combined.

This is fucking ridiculous. If this guy had ranted about anything else he'd be fine, if everybody hadn't overreacted so much he'd be fine. It's because everybody got their panties in a knot that this dude got fired.

He actually made a really good point too. I like Felicia Day but she has added fuck all to this industry, he was spot on.

Come on, really. She produces a rather tepid product built off of gaming stereotypes solely for the gaming community. She is not an ambassador, and I don't think anyone would want the guild to be the show that people think of when they think of gamers.

To be clear: Felicia is my friend, so this is personal for me. But it's also about men being shitty to successful women, especially gamers.

To be honest, he could have written something about the "cult of personalities" in the videogame industry and it would have been a bit better.

It doesn't help that his twitter comment comes off as super aggressive and hostile. Twitter has been a mess since day 1 for PR.

That's because Sterling is supposed to be "satire". So he can say whatever he wants! He seems like a pretty despicable human being but that's how he built his internet persona.

Damn I'm seeing double. Who is this evil clone of mine?

Haha just noticed my new name^^ Time for an avatar change.

Looks like he is really burying himself, kinda funny but it will look really pathetic when he is looking for a job.

Who is Felicia Day?

She's a successful attractive woman that manchildren in their twenties want to make their waifu, because she appears to have an interest in video games. She is associated with a show called The Guild, which is an embarrassing mix of shitty gaming stereotypes. She has red hair.

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"
And has Jaffe said she is fully capable of defending herself and she does not need venomous white knights to defend her.

wow, what? i dont know why, but i expected more from wil wheaton.

Considering he is a close personal friend of hers and has worked on numerous projects with her its called being a friend not white knighting.

with the quotes about jacking off and idiot asshole men, it sounds a lot like being a white knight to me.

maybe im not seeing it, or its because i really didnt like her roles in eureka and supernatural, but i dont see her as attractive.

Wtf? I mean, I really respect Wil Wheaton (and also Felicia Day), and how that Destructoid guy fired tweets at Felicia Day wasn't cool at all (although firing him went to far imo), but shit like "Listen, dicks, when you contribute 1/100 of what @feliciaday has contributed to gaming culture and independent production, you can talk."? I'm sorry, but an attitude like that is extremely off putting. I think I just expected better of him.

You just want to create some Anarchy don't you?

I think that Felicia Day has done wonders for the independent production scene, but for gaming ... I don't know. With that said I have never seen any of her work, also the appeal of her work always appealed to the people in the know. I guess The Guild was a way to break stereotypes about mmo players?

That was mean and uncalled for... But he was also right. She's the cute female equivalent of Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory (or one of those other characters, I dunno, I don't watch the show) and that's it.

I liked The Guild, though.

If anyone should be insulted, it's that self-important douchebag Wil Wheaton. There's a difference between defending your friend and coming off as a painfully awkward White Knight.

and Veronica Belmont lol
Gets annoying but that's how some male gamers are.

Not that his tweets weren't out of line but doesn't anyone else find it weird that Destructoid fired this guy when they keep Jim Sterling employed despite the fact he's said a bunch of misogynistic stuff on twitter in the past?

e: For reference: http://www.auntiepixelante.com/?p=912

Very, Jim called a chick cunt multiple times in some Twitter war. Nero is an opportunistic guy. He knows sterling brings in the hits. He knows felicia day is loved. Firing this Ryan perez means nothing, that guy is a no body. He would never of fired sterling for those comments.

lol Wheaton really wants to bang Felicia day

What a dump ass. Why did he criticized Felicia Day from the beginning? Because she got too much attention? I feel jealousy there, my friend. Or maybe he's trying to score her by being a prick? Hmm... that works sometime.

IMHO, Felecia Day is kind of James Rolfe or Nathan Barnatt, just with more mainstream exposure. Also, because she's a woman working in an industry/within a field that is very male-heavy/geeky, she would attract a lot of white knight attention and therefore similar amounts of derision.

I never got into The Guild. But I did like her on the eps of Dollhouse she was in.

On the one hand, the guy was a complete dick. One the other hand, why does Felicia Day persist as a "thing" in gaming/geek culture? She's female, reasonably attractive, seems genuinely interested in geeky/gaming stuff, and happens to be a minor actress. If you take away the female part, what's left to make her stand out? What has she done? She made The Guild, and that has to count for something, right?

I don't think there's anything wrong with what I *think* he was trying to say, but that sure is not the way to say it. I just wonder what precipitated that rant in the first place. And worth being fired over? Maybe not, with a sincere apology.

Even if you don't care for her, that is just plain rude and hostile. And honestly, who cares what she has contributed to the gaming industry. It wouldn't be right to go and say similar things to males who are in a similar position as her (gaming personalities or whatever).

That's maybe the worst thing. Destructoid tries to pass this off as a "respectable thing to do towards Felicia Day and the gaming community", just because this Ryan Perez isn't the semi-famous person other people like Jim Sterling is. While I'm sure they enjoy the whole attention thing at the moment. Pretty sad imo.

Jim Sterling always had this i mantra that his opinion represents that all gamers out there. The thing that turned me off from reading destructoid is the affection the audience has for a outburst from Sterling.
