Guy Says Rude Thing to Person, Gets Fired From Destructoid, Says More Rude Things

Even if you don't care for her, that is just plain rude and hostile. And honestly, who cares what she has contributed to the gaming industry. It wouldn't be right to go and say similar things to males who are in a similar position as her (gaming personalities or whatever).

Doesn't seem like all the many have an issue with the guy getting fired. He went on a random, unprovoked rant about an internet gaming personality. The conversation is more about the bizarre and rabid reaction of those needlessly coming to her defense.

I mean, I agree that Felicia Day is annoying and uses her faux geek person for monetary gain, but I'm not gonna go on twitter and harass her about her. I just ignore everything she participates in my life is better for it.

As someone who has actually shipped video games I don't consider her or any who works in the games enthusiast press as part of the games industry.

That's maybe the worst thing. Destructoid tries to pass this off as a "respectable thing to do towards Felicia Day and the gaming community", just because this Ryan Perez isn't the semi-famous person other people like Jim Sterling is. While I'm sure they enjoy the whole attention thing at the moment. Pretty sad imo.
Oh yeah trending on Twitter is massive for a site like dtoid.
Jim Sterling always had this i mantra that his opinion represents that all gamers out there. The thing that turned me off from reading destructoid is the affection the audience has for a outburst from Sterling.

Same man I can't take sites community its like a more mature 4chan, if that makes any sense lol. And I am mostly talking about the comments on articles to be fair.

I always took Jim Sterling to be a troll; ie, none of his articles ever seemed serious to me

I never understood why people got upset about him

It really is embarrassing - all because Day is 'pretty' (in the eyes of many) and a gamer. I'll bet if the same was said of Kurtz (of the webcomic PvP), on-one would bat an eye-lid, despite the level of creative contribution from both Day and Kurtz is around the same.

Are female gamers really that rare to these knee-jerkers?

Like how? They're a pretty solid site, I think. I can think of much, much worse gaming sites.
No they really are not solid, in any way at all. I love some of people that work there. But the mixture of horrid community / sterling really makes it one of those places I cannot visit.

I think most of the content is fine. Pretty standard. Most comment sections are poorly moderated cesspools.

Anyways, not sure firing was needed, but then again when you're in gaming press you don't go bashing people in the industry.

It's not that he was rude to someone in the Geek Industry.

It's that he apparently is simply an asshole.

Hell, at first, I applauded him for asking that question about Day, but then I continued reading and realized he just doesn't fucking know how to write.

Not for nothing, but I feel like the Dragon Age Felicia Day DLC thing was pretty much the tipping point for "geek girl" culture.

Well, maybe Chobot in Mass Effect 3 tops that... but it's awfully close.

That said, there's actually no reason to be a douche about it.

What he said was a bit unprofessional and probably deserved some form of discipline though being terminated I think is a little too severe. It sucks for him to be fired for being unprofessional as being unprofessional seems to all to common for the numerous pr shills that are in the game journalism industry.

The Gaming Industry

Don't care for anybody involved in this. The dude worded his tweet wrong boo hoo. Destructoid pretends they are some group of professionals. D-list celebs come to the rescue of the damsel in distress. Fortunately she is a grown women who can talk for herself so the white knights end up just looking dumb.

In the end this Felecia person comes out looking like the only decent person only because she hasnt responded yet regardless if anything she does is worthwhile.

ps. Wil Wheaton? Really? The dude who played the whiny scrub in Star Trek? Nuff said

Unprofessionalism is the fuel that keeps the Destructoid train chugging along. This guy probably thought he was just doing the job required of a Destructoid writer, only to find out too late that dissing video game royalty was one step too far.

The people saying shit like this should really do a search for references to people who slam someone like Jaffe or Kurtz. Those guys get bombed by their fans every bit as much as Day's fans lambasted this idiot.

Sorry, this "drunk" idiot.

There are "white knights" for anyone with a fanbase. Acting like that's not the case just to try and make some point about females being off-limits for criticism (like this was even criticism in the first place) is disingenuous at best.

Dude needn't have been sacked.

I don't visit Destructoid at all any more. Since I discovered Gaf really. Sterling used to make me laugh, but I just thoughgt he was a joke character, like Zero Punctuation. I loved Jonathan Holmes's enthusiasm and looked forward to reading his reviews.

But that site is a fucking nightmare. Slow and shit. And as for their new tablet UI. Useless.

Didn't realize there was so much vitriol for Destructoid. What sites are approved? Just curious.

I think it's mostly the Jim Sterling thing, it's just blatant trolling and very juvenile, the only reason they keep him around is for the hits they get whenever he posts something against the grain and everyone links it saying how ridiculous it is.

It's just my personal opinion, although a lot of GAF seems to hate Kotaku/Destructoid it seems.

Personally I just realized how Nero runs that place, and I did not like it one bit. The entire thing is fueled by Sterling's trolling at this point. Which really sucks because like I said they have some honestly awesome people working there.

As far as Felicia Day is concerned btw I am a fan, I find it hard to see how anyone could have a problem with her. She seems funny, humble, and comes across as a good person to me. There are so many more douche bags in this industry that people should focus their rage on, if they have to rage at all that is. Men and Women.

The way she's being pushed just feels patronizing. Almost like when Jade Raymond was portrayed as the singular force behind the first AC game. It's as if they assume that people who play games haven't spoken to a girl before or something.

There are plenty of people on NeoGAF who read Destructoid.

But I think if you were to ask the community as a whole, you'd find that Andriasang (Japanese news), RockPaperShotgun (PC news), The Verge, Eurogamer, Edge, Go Nintendo (Nintendo), and Giantbomb have generally positive reputations.

I think you'd find that Destructoid, VG247, Kotaku, Joystiq, Game Informer, IGN, and GamesRadar have generally negative reputations.

(These don't 100% line up with my assessment, but you seem to be asking what the GAF community as a whole thinks)

I can see that. Just personally I have zero problem with her.

I was with you up until your last sentence which implied everyone that dislikes Day dislikes women.

Thanks for calling me sexist.

Felicia should have said "apology accepted, though i don't know who you are"

And then it's all done.

But you're watching white knighting in grand scale. Good job internet!

:/

I would say that among the portion of GAF's community that cares about Nintendo news, Go Nintendo has a pretty good reputation. I can't think of any other Nintendo site that has a better one. Certainly it's more well liked than NintendoEverything. NintendoLife and NintendoWorldReport both have good reputations but are significantly smaller in reach.

He actually made a really good point too. I like Felicia Day but she has added fuck all to this industry, he was spot on.

You can say the same thing about nearly every gaming personality and/or journalist. None of them have made significant contributions to the industry, nor should that even matter.

Why does Felicia Day have to be held to some higher standard in order to be accepted? It should simply be that you either like or dislike the persons work.

What's with this forum and the obsession with "white knights"

Oh god yes. This made normal discussions about anything involving women totally pointless, especially during the last few weeks/months. If you're on one side, you're some sort of rape-culture-ist (?), if you're on the other side, you're a White Knight.

Also, I like what Felicia Day has done so far, be it acting, singing or voice-acting. She's done more to actually help Gaming than most reviewers out there. That guy's a total ass, but so is half of Destructoid's staff, and he shouldn't get fired for that single comment.

Apparently anyone who isn't female and calls out misogynism (I'm not talking about this thread specifically) is a "white knight". It's an easy way of dismissing a topic that makes some people uncomfortable.

... I'd rather be a white knight. Or a mexican-knight. Oraleee essè!

Not to piss on my previous post, but Felicia Day's fanbase (which is really just an extension of Joss Whedon's fanbase) is fucking crazy.

LOL whatttt? I don't even remember seeing you post in this thread dude.

Seriously ....

and if I wanted to call you sexist, I would just do that. I am not one to be passive aggressive lol. Sorry if I offended you, but not really since I didn't even know you where in this thread. I've been quoting a lot of people in here, so if I did quote you btw it was based off comments not your user name.

Looked back no I did not quote you. Not sure how you think I am calling you sexist at all. I mean't there are plenty of douche bags in this industry, both men and women (who are douche bags ... ). So if people are going to rage, they should go after the "douche bags" in the industry, not people like Felicia Day who are perfectly nice people.

Anyway ....

Well the discussion here is about Felicia Day but I'd probably agree with this if it was said about someone else who's work is of a similar vain to Felicia Day.

Yeah i don't know much about this particular case, the term "white knight" obviously has legitimate uses too, but on gaf it's almost always a knee-jerk reaction in any gender-related debate.

ERMYGERD!
felicia day's contribution to gaming shouldn't be underestimated. she's done voice acting. for games. that's more than most of you lot.

then again, Jade Raymond actually makes a difference in video games, so she's not all that and then some.
and tera Patrick also did voice acting in video games. so day's impact on games is on the same level as a porn star.

do voice actors have an impact on video games?

you'd think gamers and wallets have more impact...
