Guy Says Rude Thing to Person, Gets Fired From Destructoid, Says More Rude Things

I think he posed a valid question. I would think Destructoid wouldn't have a problem with it especially since they've got Jim Sterling.

Yeah i don't know much about this particular case, the term "white knight" obviously has legitimate uses too, but on gaf it's almost always a knee-jerk reaction in any gender-related debate.

True, any female has a white knight fanbase according to them.

"putting pussy on pedestal" and all that.
Instead of being, you know human.

Discussions about sexism are usually overloaded with extremely lazy terms likes white-knighting, political-correctness, privilege, etc, to the point where most debates are just people firing off the same 5 stock phrases back and forth forever. You're such a white knight. No, you're just a privileged white hetero guy!

Yawn.

As far as Felicia Day is concerned btw I am a fan, I find it hard to see how anyone could have a problem with her.

I don't have a problem with her but I do find Bioware making her a central point of DLC a weird kind of creepy pandering. But that's totally on them.

Really this ...

I think the guys comments were gross and offensive, and Felicia Day seems really nice so I like her well enough.

But really I do not give a shit about this intern, what I do find funny is that Jim Sterling calls chick cunt multiple times + posts a really offensive photo and he stays on staff. Yes the girl in question was not exactly the spectacle of maturity herself, but cmon the damn Intern who got fired did not saying anything more offensive then "Glorified Booth Babe". As offensive as that is, it's not anywhere on the level of calling a chick a cunt. Or the picture he posted.

Wish this was being discussed more so I could fulfill my sick fantasy of watching sterling getting fired.

No argument there, that face was the shit nightmares are made out of man.

50% Knee Jerk Reaction.
50% people mistaking saying something good about Topic X as defending it. It's the same principal behind people having to suffix every post with "but EA/Activision still sucks".
It's pretty bad because it's not like White Knights don't exist, which is indeed a problem in gaming and yet another reason for why a lot of women avoid hardcore gaming (the "Nice Guys" from Off-Topic), but I think the topic title shows precisely why it's stupid to think of this as merely a matter of gender.

People get fired all the time from making stupid comments on Twitter or having party pictures in Facebook. Destructoid seems to be more tongue in cheek than most gaming sites, but still, with Gaming still as a growing industry, the last thing you'd want is to have your site associated with anything that could be seen as "sexist", so it all adds up.

Nobody here is defending Day's honor in order to eventually sleep with her, which is the supposed mean of White Knight. Throwing the term around everywhere just makes you look like a Strawman.

I remember seeing her on some Microsoft E3 conference (?), presenting some social networking integration. Outside of that, i don´t know what she is doing.
What actually makes her important enough for a guy to loose his job?

Apparently anyone who isn't female and calls out misogynism (I'm not talking about this thread specifically) is a "white knight". It's an easy way of dismissing a topic that makes some people uncomfortable.

the only person thats been called out for being a white knight in this thread is wil wheaton though.

This is ridiculous, people get fired for expressing their own opinions in their own free time now? Or was he tweeting on the job?

He is a staff member, simple as that. They have every right to fire him for shit like that.

The ridiculous part for me is the hypocrisy in the whole matter concerning their other well known staff member and his known twitter rants towards a specific woman. But I will stop talking about it before I get a I hate Jim Sterling tag. That shit would fucking suck lol.

Twitter is going to be the downfall of humanity.

Its the beginning of the end.

This is how the West falls. Its staggering that anyone gives a fuck about anyone involved, but here we are.

ATTENTION: If any girls are reading this please mildly annoy Jim Sterling on twitter right now. The time is right and we can get some shit accomplished.

Sterling is probably ready for it. Dude knows the game.

Didn't realize there was so much vitriol for Destructoid. What sites are approved? Just curious.
gamefaqs.

He slapped "Writer for Destructoid" in his Twitter profile, effectively making his Twitter account work-related. You don't attack people in any capacity when you're representing your employer and expect to keep your job in most industries. People like Sterling wind up getting a pass because lol games journalism, but the general idea of termination for violating a code of conduct isn't new.

I'm not going to comment on the right/wrong of this situation. I just don't understand the why? Why would you ask that in the first place? Did he expect her to tweet back an itemized list of her contributions? It just doesn't make any sense!

Also there are billions of people who don't contribute anything to anything. I can't imagine being bothered to go on twitter and question any of them. I just literally don't see the point.

When he is an intern at a gaming press site, no.

It would be the same if an intern at CNN would just badmouth the GOP without facts.

The gaming press is nothing but a tabloid on steroids.

felicia day's contribution to gaming shouldn't be underestimated. she's done voice acting. for games. that's more than most of you lot.

then again, Jade Raymond actually makes a difference in video games, so she's not all that and then some.
and tera Patrick also did voice acting in video games. so day's impact on games is on the same level as a porn star.

do voice actors have an impact on video games?

you'd think gamers and wallets have more impact...

She is contrinuting yes, but so am I buying the game, enoying it, discussing it on a forum, playing it in competitions, creating fansites for it, contributing to the community around this game etc.

Fact is that what this Destructoid guy said was totally uncalled for (although I still think firing him was unnecesary and just a way of Destructoid to garner attention at the expense of somebody nobody knows). But, what that Wil Wheadon is tweeting is equally sad ("Until then, shut the fuck up and go back to your sad little lives, jerking off alone every night. Okay? Great. Thanks.", "Listen, dicks, when you contribute 1/100 of what @feliciaday has contributed to gaming culture and independent production, you can talk.")

how do you determine whether or not someone is defending someones elses honor to sleep with them? is there a way about doing this?

Yeah, when dudes are going on how she's the most perfect being ever.
No one is doing that.
They are defending the right to be a part of people trying to put on a face to gaming, which in the mainstream is always negative.
I have criticisms of what her abilities are but at least I would put some substance behind them, instead of just blaming her for another "gamer gurl"
(suggesting that her being nerdy is just another ploy to get her noticed).

Im coming Felicia Day !

Who is Felicia Day

how do you determine whether or not someone is defending someones elses honor to sleep with them? is there a way about doing this?
We could begin with them being overtly defensive of whoever they're defending regardless of how wrong/right the situation is and the chances of her actually reading it are high, probably mentioning how weak and defenseless they'd be unless someone from a Priviliged Position did something to help her. Mention her attractiveness when it's pointless, too.

At least that's how it's been in the most blatant cases I've seen. I don't think it's unreasonable nor overtly defensive to point out how what this dude did could be seen as unprofessional, and that people get fired all the time for acting unprofessional on social networks.

Sounds like some blown out or proportion situation. Why cares if people make some bad comments on Twitter. Guy went from 50 to 2000+ followers for no reason also. Nice social media experiment. Videogame drama...

When will the haters?

They can come for her when they've produced anything as remotely entertaining as The Guild.

Until then, take a seat and shut the fuck up.
"entertaining and The guild" in the same sentence?

That show is unoriginal, bland, cliche-ridden and not funny or remotely entertaining.

She only got those jobs because she was famous for 15 minutes on the internet.

I hereby want to apologize to @feliciaday

At this point I'm pretty sure people will never stop getting fired for saying dumb stuff on twitter and facebook. The barrier for posting something there is just too low allowing you to post something without it going through PR or even having thought about the consequences.

he's a intern at a major gaming site. Gaming being a anti-feminine culture and industry.

I only just had my GAF account authorized a couple days ago, so I apologize if I'm just popping "out of the blue."

I'm an editor for Destructoid, and Ryan Perez was an intern who we brought on recently. I met him during E3, and he's a great guy. I'm not defending what he said to Felicia Day, because it was terrible no matter how you slice it. However, I don't believe Ryan fancies himself extra special just because he's a games blogger. He honestly was not familiar with Felicia Day's body of work, her name came up in a discussion with his friends, then he jumped onto Twitter before thinking about his actions clearly. An unfortunate decision that cost him, but I don't think less of him. He leaped before he looked, is all.

So yes, this whole affair was rather disappointing, but he really isn't the self-important misogynist that he's been painted as on Twitter.

Justify Destructoid not firing this douche

The guy kind of has a point she is popular for being a good looking gamer girl
and making some crappy online show. I highly doubt she would have became as popular as she did if it was not for her looks.

So? At what point does she claim she is a benefit to society? Don't most actors and almost any freelancers basically go with the opportunities that come up? If some comments open doors in certain fields for you, grab them and make some money.

As long as you don't start spouting that you're the messiah, then everyone else should shut the fuck up

The outrage almost seems distastefully decadent, people lining up to defend her when she already gave the perfect response, which was to simply ignore it.

Oh well, speak for yourself I guess. It's surely not "The Gamers" / "Dorkness rising" levels of awesome, but I thought it's fun to watch.

Wait, so he was basically fired because he called out a woman in the industry? Would this have gone down differently if it wasn't a woman?

Do we know anything about the context of Jim Sterlings tweet? To me it just looks like someone insulting someone because they're annoyed at them, not because they're a women.

He was fired because he was rude, unprofessional, and attacked a person with insults. Some of the reaction from the general populace may have been because the person is a woman, but his firing doesn't seem unjustified.

To be clear: Felicia is my friend, so this is personal for me. But it's also about men being shitty to successful women, especially gamers.

just because he's her friend doesn't change the fact he's doing some textbook white knighting

So before I didn't care, but now I'm curious. "when you contribute 1/100 of what @feliciaday has contributed to gaming culture and independent production, you can talk"

What the hell is "gaming culture" and how does one contribute to it?

It was ridiculous when the guy asked Felicia Day to start with, because really who gives a fuck if she contributes to gaming culture (whatever that means)? She's an actress and likes games, why does she have to be anything more or less than that?

Then Wheaton comes in claiming she does contribute to gaming culture. And the whole thing still makes no sense. I know Wesley Crusher isn't dumb but he's opened the door now. How exactly does she contribute to "gaming culture"?

Really though we should all be pretty pissed off at him for invoking the basement gamer jerks off alone and hates women stereotype. That's pretty small minded to start with so I don't know how he thinks he's in the better position to argue about anything here.

Twitter: It's Important.

I LOVE Twitter when it's mostly my friends and I talking about random stuff or watching PPV's. I'm saddened by Twitter because it gives everyone an opinion and the opinions that are the worst seem to get the most attention. Look up every trend that is negative or people defending their favorite person or band. They draw attention to it instead of just ignoring it.

If we were stuck in the world of the Tree House of Horror VI we would all be dead because nobody would take Paul Anka's advice of "Just don't look."

Having a hard time coming up with a context that would make the use of "feminazi slut" appropiate.

Then again, from what I've seen he seems to make a living out of trolling people, so justifying why he still gets paid to work there could be reasonably attributed to "lolgamingjournalism".

I've only heard of her by name once or twice, but at least I've heard of her unlike this guy.

And making statements on the internet will continue to get idiots into trouble no matter how known or unknown they are, despite the multitudes of examples of it that pop up ever so often.

The worst is when they end it with a worthless apology trying to take back what they did after the damage was already done, and it feels like it's a sham. If you meant the apology, you would have never said your initial statement in the first place.

Surprised he was fired for speaking the truth even if it was seemingly random and unprovoked.

Also with all of the things Sterling has said and done it's just proof when you hold more power you're given a LOT more room on the leash.
