Same here -- although I have a feeling it'll be more fair than Ms. Splosion Man or Super Meat Boy. One of the comments I saw from the Giant Bomb QL called it a "2D Dark Souls," which may not be entirely accurate.
I have only broke 3 controllers in the 20+ years i have been gaming and Dark souls was one of those (broke 2 on it, not because of difficulty but because of really stupid fucking mistakes on my part) and one on SMB. Again like DS it wasn't out of difficulty it was out of a careless mistake and arrogance that killed me and rage just completely engulfed me.

Oddly enough i never get super pissed over difficulty, i just get REALLY angry when i do something stupid out of carelessness or arrogance and it happens more often then not, i get too cocky :-/

I'm actually finding it funny rather than annoying, some of the deaths are so stupid, and they're always your own fault

I imagine it's going to lead to an awesome Rage Quit though.
That's what scares me, i get pissed over stupid mistakes that shouldn't of happened in the first place but did because like i said above, i got careless, arrogance blah blah.

I actually didn't even find Demon's/Dark Souls to be THAT difficult, i just made a lot of stupid and careless mistakes which got me killed A LOT and i got really mad over it.

This is how I've always felt with the PC one. Deaths usually have made me laugh because they came about in ridiculous ways. Though I was very much the same way in Dark/Demons Souls, most of the time.

Fair warning, your primary enemies in this game are ignorance and haste.

Too many times I've sped along and took a jump without looking, only to get hit in the face with an arrow or fall into some spikes or smash into the ground and get stunned, then killed by a spider or snake, etc.

Oh, and dying an embarrassing amount of times to bats.

I got to an exit and thought "right, slow down" so I could look around and see if there was any nearby treasure I could easily grab before I left. So I'm standing on this exit, and that's the moment when the massive tiki statue that was right next to me that I hadn't even noticed spiked me to death

Buying this tomorrow...never heard of it until I read the IGN review, and reading this thread sold me on it.

Anyone who played Binding of Isaac excited for this? They seem very similar to me, but somehow this seems less appealing.

Similar in the fact that every game if pressure packed but it is NOTHING like Isaac in gameplay.

Isaac is like Robotron, this is like Spelunker. Totally different.

No, that's a pretty apt description. SMB is a cakewalk compared to Spelunky.

No release date, yet.

Probably won't happen because Microsoft Game Studios is publishing this.

Edit: I will actually be careful with that statement because on the IGN page (I know, please don't go after me) it says it's published by Mossmouth and on the Major Nelson site he has it as MGS which I typically assume means Microsoft Game Studios. So, I'm slightly confused.

Ain't the whole trick to Spelunky is to learn how to efficiently kill the shopkeeper?

I hate that guy.

If you shot someone for picking up the wrong die at the casino IRL you'd go to jail.

Get out of the cave and go home to your family you trigger happy dick.

Like all you need is a well timed bomb or two and you get the best weapon in the game, and all the shit from the shop.

Then the game becomes cakewalk.

Microsoft "publishes" a lot of stuff that's gone multiplatform (Limbo, Braid, Super Meat Boy), or that you wouldn't expect (Rez HD, Pac-Man: CE).

It is a Microsoft (MGS) published game, yeah, but that doesn't rule out a PSN version.

Don't hold your breath, though.

Don't fret. It's all about being careful. Not nearly as thumb-busting as SMB. Still super difficult, just in a different way.

O for $10 this game is as good as bought, I'm just not sure if I need this game to consume me. This year alone I've gotten Fez and Trials and those two games really challenged my patience.

My prefered method is
to use a rope outside of the shop. Steal something, run to the rope, jump to the shoopkeeper when he's trying to kill you, take his shotgun and kill him.

Chances are good I'll be waking up early to get this downloaded. So excited! At least for the time being I can tap away on Theatrhythm.

meat boy spotted!

also you damn lucky XBLA folk, I played 100+ hours of the original Spelunky, here's hoping the exclusivity deal aint that long

I thought he said it would stay on XBLA but that he would update the original release?

Is there a specific list of what's added in the single player mode of this game vs the PC game? Wasn't able to find one...thanks.

too many people in this thread own this game already. SPEND MONEY ON THIS GAME fuckers.

45 minutes until SPELUNKY day! whoo!

Oh man, it's been soooo long since I've been this hyped for a game, I'm counting down the hours. I finished the game once on PC (756 tries, no shortcuts) and then decided to wait for the XBLA version to really dig in (fnar fnar).

SO EXCITED!

Glad to see the reviews are good, there was never a doubt in my mind it would be great but these kinds of scores may mean the game will be a success for Yu. Personally I'm hoping Spelunky becomes the Demon's Souls success story of XBLA.

i like your style.

lets not get carried away now. let me know when you have all achievements on both games and then make your case.

Watching this now. SNIP.

HI! some of us arent wathing these streams because we actually dont want to know about this stuff before we play it. thanks!

No, he wants to bring the XBLA game to PC.

that wasnt what he said in that recent interview though. he said he would update the freeware game. he may want to do both though at some point i guess.

I got the I Wanna Be the Guy achievement in Super Meat Boy, but I couldn't even get past the first world in the PC version of Spelunky. That game ground me into dust.

It demands a completely different skillset. You basically have to be hyper-vigilant all the time, which is where the Demon's Souls comparisons come in.

well damn, you got skills for sure then.

i think learning Spelunky is going to be less about agility with the controller and more about learning the world rules and how to bend them though. its a bit less hardcore platforming and a bit more roguelike.

that said, i dont know how the full achievement list is going to stack up against SMB. it may in fact be harder. we shall see.

HEY! is 12AM est.

SPELUNKY DAY!

Holy shit the free game is amazing.

It really is. I downloaded it ages ago, but only fumbled my way through am little bit using keyboard controls and had trouble remembering all the keys.

Fired it up last night and used a controller this time. It is now amazing!
