STEAM announcements & updates 2012 Thread 2 - Bad Rats Daily Deal for next 6 months

Recently I played VVVVV with a friend and we had a blast going through it together.

Can anybody recommend games that are either co op based or just fun to play with a friend?

I was thinking of playing the main story in Portal 2.

I kind of want something semi difficult but short so we can beat it on one sitting.

Left4Dead 2 is a fantastic Co-op game and is perfect for playing in short bursts.

Magicka was some of the most coop fun I've ever had.

Rayman Origins is a great game. Only has local co-op, not online.

Going to wait until I beat the game for my actual review (on Chapter 5 of 6), but Binary Domain is going to get a thumbs up with some caveats.

I should be able to finish the game later today. Will write up my thoughts tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks again Tony!

If you make it through your first Steam sale and only come out with one game I will be very impressed. The barrage of ridiculous deals will be relentless. The only real defense is an enormous Steam library.

I bought the last humble bundle, the EA pack from Amazon (5 games I never played), Crysis, Dead Space 2 y Warhammer 40K.

For someone coming from consoles, used to buy 2 games/month, that is A LOT, lol

God i just wanted this sale to start before I go on holidays friday, going to be way harder to remember to check the deals when we are in Vegas and San Diego for Comic Con.

Just take my money already Steam!

Man, yesterday I was thinking "Well, since there's no sale for me to obsess over, I might as well play a game." So I booted up Civilization V for the first time.

I emerged from the game 10 hours later.

I think I have a problem.

Since when is VVVV co-op?

As for great co-op games:

Online Co-op:

Portal 2
Trine `2
Fear 3
Dead Island
Renegade Ops
Dungeon Defenders
Alien Swarm
Saints Row 3
Laura Croft: Guardian of Light
Bunch of Heroes
Killing Floor
Payday: The Heist
Left 4 Dead 1 & 2
Rainbow Six Vegas
Warhammer Dawn of War 2
Magicka

Same System Co-Op:

Trine 1
Trine 2
Laura Croft
Portal 2
Jamestown
Hamilton's Great Adventure
Renegade Ops
Bunch of Heroes
Rayman Origins
Magicka

Edit: For "short" games: Renegade Ops, Laura Croft, Jamestown, and Trine 1 & 2 are maybe the best of the bunch. Probably around 3-6 hours each.

That's a better problem than anticipating the sale when I haven't even installed most of the games I own on steam.

I did the exact same thing: launched civ V to play a bit. Stopped something like 6 hours later.

It's Lara Croft! And yes it's probably a good co-op game even though I have no friends and played it alone!

Yeah I'm pretty much banking on next Thursday. The only reason I've had such a hard time thinking it's the 12th is that I can't believe the date for it would have been leaked out so early like that.

For me it just struck me as odd that the sale wouldn't have any association with independence day. But I guess there's no actual requirement for that.

Just to check: the Steam guy who said that one was happening in the summer... *was* in the Northern Hemisphere, right?

Is there any way to play that local co op with two keyboards?

I've played it with controller and OH GAWD it's terrible.

You can get used to playing it with a controller. I beat it with one when I was still too stubborn to accept that I should learn how to use PC controls.

It basically becomes like inputing fighiting game moves.

However, I'll readily admit now, the game is way, way better, with a keyboard and mouse.

Hey guys, I know that supposedly you can only redeem retail keys from games in this list, but since there are a couple of titles missing (i.e. Max Payne 3), I wanted to ask if anyone knows if you can redeem Risen or The Secret World keys.

Also, would anyone be interested in a Prey key? I've found it for 3€, and since it can't be bought I wouldn't mind buying trading it for a game of similar value.

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.

Max Payne 3 isn't missing from the list. It is not a Steamworks title or a title that uses Steam as its default DRM for non-Steam sales.

Now, Amazon has started offering some keys as steam-redeemable keys. These can be registered on Steam, obviously, but they are not necessarily Steamworks titles.

It's nuanced. But it is a safer practice to assume a title is not Steam-registrable if it is not on that list. Most retailers will tell you if you're getting a Steam key.

As for your specific games you asked about: the versions sold via Amazon do not appear to be redeemable on Steam. Elsewhere? I'm not sure. But probably not.

Yeah, alright, I'll take you up on that Prey offer.

Ah, my bad then. It's a shame, someone gifted me The Secret World but if I can't redeem it on Steam I don't know when will I play it :(

Great! If anyone else is interested, I think I'll buy a couple of extra copies if I find them, but I can't promise anything.

Oh god yes. A friend of mine wants it on Steam badly, and is always bitching at how he missed it.

I'd get one too, so two for me I guess. If possible. I could paypal you or give you a Steam game of equal value at any time.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
There seems to be a lot of activity happening with Steam and on its forums. Stuff like adding summer sale game packs, Valve workers hinting at it on the forum, etc.

Still, its a very 'grain of salt' thing. It IS Valve we are dealing with here.

EDIT: beaten 4 times over. Damn mobile phone.

You've assumed my mantle.

No, no you don't.

Welcome to Civ.

First time I ever played a Civ game was Civ 5. I started about 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. I stopped playing at about 2AM on Sunday morning.

I was originally playing peacfully but I got into a bitter conflict with Napoleon and I ended up in a series of "one more turn to burn the fucker to the ground" routines.

I'd be down for a Prey key for something roughly $5, too.

Civ IV was my megalomaniac goto game. I tend to be a lot more peaceful in Civ V. Dunno whats wrong with me :()

I'm going on holiday for a week tomorrow. Assuming the Steam sale starts whilst I'm away will I still be able to buy stuff? I've heard you can't use a card with a billing address different to the country you're in.

I always start off trying to be peaceful but then something happens. Last few times I played it wasn't even outright conflict it was just that I needed expansion room and a city state started looking tasty.

Also, in a troubling realistic fashion, it seems to easier to keep your citizens happy during war since productivity is up and the economy is better. The happiest population I ever had was when I was in a epic hundreds of years war with Napoleon

I find in all Civ games I try to be a peaceful nation until I'm forced into war. After my first victory I get the taste for blood and conquer the rest of the world by force.

You could use the mobile app to bypass the regional restrictions I believe. Not 100% sure though.

That's a pretty accurate summation of how my games typically went too. But the last couple of times, I just decided to stop kidding myself and just planned on playing aggressively from the start. I wish it were easier to negotiate and win by non-military routes. It's too much of a crap shoot as to whether or not you'll beat the other countries in the developments you need.

If you have any extras, I'd be down. Worth a shot.

I have always forever, since the original Civ been peaceful, until I'm crossed.

Civ V is truly the best game in terms of letting me unleash my mandate all over their faces.

I break them.

I don't like the AI.

NiGHTS is alright though.

Aw, Prey is awesome! I have Nuclear Dawn, Serious Sam 2 and the first Commandos game.

If you have any more copies I can trade if you want.

I tried to be peaceful but one of my neighbors stole a tile from me. 1000 years later, I had obliterated 3 civs and 5 city states.
This is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass.
