At one point when Rapture was being developed as an FF MMO they weren't even sure if it was going to be the fourteenth or fifteenth FF title. So if Versus is being rebranded XV they can easily rebrand the other XV as XVI. However, yes ALL of this is rumor and speculation.

I can't help but think that if they dumped money into the trainwreck that was XIV to salvage anything out of that then they'd do whatever they could to save Versus XIII.

Though, I don't think Nomura would need any saving to begin with. He has directed his own games before with great success.

Man...I pray this isn't true. The XIII games have been so mediocre thus far, was really looking towards this as a saving grace. It's a bummer that I haven't felt confident about FF for years at this point.

I still don't understand why people use production values as a means of judging whether or not something is a spinoff . A spinoff can have just as high production values as the original series.

Honestly, with NOTHING to show and barely 2 years left (at most) of the PS3 before we get the PS4 (assuming) ... I think it's safe to pack this one in. It's done.

I do hope they took assets from XIII Versus and rolled it into XV with the rumors we've been hearing about that it basically sounds like Versus.

And to echo most others, this is to be expected. Maybe Kotaku and IGN are in cahoots to try and force any new info by SE.

I can buy the substance of this rumor, but not that Ashcraft would have access to sources that would know everything said here. Not believing it for now, though it may well be true if the game doesn't resurface at/by TGS.

Square-Enix has just collapsed this gen. Just brutal performance all round.

Members without a track record of being right get cautioned. I was threatened over the EDF 2017 announcement a couple years ago until a fellow gaffer produced a photo of the banner.

I'm guilty of doing it as well, although I've never been threatened with a ban. Most of the time there is no source to give, because it's stuff that was mentioned off the record. But that also means it probably shouldn't be posted in public, which is why I try not to anymore.

For what it's worth, Kagari also made a series of posts before last TGS assuring us that Square Enix had big things in store for Vita and that no one needed to worry about their commitment to the platform.

She attempted to justify this later by claiming that FFX HD, an enhanced PS2 port that isn't even Vita-exclusive, was such a "big" announcement. Yeah.

But overall, her track record is decent.

I don't believe this rumor. If anything the title is dead and it will be re-announced as Final Fantasy XIV. Too much time and money has been spent to toss it.

Man, they'll just straight-up replace FF14 with Versus? Even after all of that work?!

Yeah the game is cancelled even though we know Nomura has already said he is ready to show off the game but is simply waiting for Square to allow it (or something to that effect).

No, the game is still being developed. Even if Square would have to use their abroad teams to help with some technical stuff that they might find challenging, it'd still get finished. Also, no one would dare say no to Nomura within Square.

Oops, I forgot about the second mmo Final Fantasy. FFXV then. Must more realistic I think then canning all the game entirely.

Even if it isn't dead, who is this super expensive game supposed to sell to if only on the PS3? Even if it was a mulitplatform release on PC, Vita, and X360 as well, would it really fare well considering the performance of recent mainline FF titles? Maybe as a next-gen release or maybe including the Wii U as part of its platforms targeted, but this thing seemed doomed years ago.

I've never heard of members being threatened with bans for not revealing sources, only that you get banned if you post false info. Big difference.

I know it's Kotaku but I would not be surprised to see Versus XIII to be cancelled. Square-Enix has bad management right now and the only good thing that keep them alive is Eidos.

Well um this was the only Final Fantasy title I have been excited about in a long time, I won't be mad if they use the resources from Versus XIII to make XV

ps3, ps4 and 720 might be the safest option.
