Ys Origin (PC/Steam) |OT|

This game is amazing. Having a good time playing on hard. Just got to what I think is near the end of the second level/section. Although I ran into some trouble with a few bosses so far, it's definitely been doable after some careful observation and practice. I thought Epona was going to be impossible the first few times I fought her; barely dealt any damage to her and she could take me out in a couple of hits. But after multiple tries, I found the right time to attack and actually came out on top.

Not entirely used to this old school type challenge, but it's been very refreshing.

I literally had 1hp left. I should have taken a screenshot. It was only normal mode, though.
I still remember in OiF when I beat the first real boss (blue chick) AFTER I had died, and her death animation was playing in the background of the Game Over screen. My brain didn't react quick enough to capture a screen :(

lolol that exact thing happened to me, and when her animation was over the capture wasn't worth it

I'm an idiot.....

Completely forgot I had the demon ring equipped without the dampening magic equipped and I died 3 times charging the ring up before I realized what I did wrong.

So I bought Ys 7 to play on my Vita. Do I play this next after finishing Origins or go to Oath? Also, Steam or PSP for Oath? 10 dollar difference right now though is leaning me towards the Steam version.

I think it quickens the charge which enhances your attacks, abilities, and raises your defense. I only have mine at level 2 right now and I've noticed my skill meter charge a little faster. On one boss it had an insane charge in that it would go full in about 10 seconds. I haven't had it charge that fast since then, thinking it might have been a glitch.

Speaking of glitches, anyone else get audio glitches? Sometimes the music just flat cuts out and I only have sound effects. Other times I have a second audio track play over the first one. A couple times I've had these strange audio cues occur during the game. The music cut out and some dude started talking about discounts on web sites what?!

But then what does boost recharge do????? Because boost is that meter you're talking about.

Is the skill recharge quickening the recharge the three different skill options you can use with the magic button? If not that then I dunno.

Definitely the PC version. I think the only thing the PSP version has over the PC version is voice acting, so if that's more important to you than better visuals and a bigger display, there's that.

I am about to start this after my Half-Life franchise run. But from what I hear, while I'll certainly enjoy it from a dungeon/battle system standpoint, I might not enjoy it for its apparent complete lack of anything else.

One of my major problems with the series is the lack of anything to do outside of the dungeons. Even in the Ys games with towns, they always lack anything interesting outside of the dungeons, which really bothers me.

Basically, if they continue with the one-town route of the series (I haven't played a lot of Ys Seven, so I don't know how they handle that), I would want them to handle it like Brave Fencer Musashi. Lots and lots of memorable characters, interesting sidequests and collectables, and rewards for all of those sidequests.

Yeah the voice acting in PSP version seems atrocious, and maps are generally scaled bigger for the PC version it seems.

Finally found this thread.

I'm not too far into the game
just "beat" Epona while playing as Yunica on Normal
, but this game is amazing.

I first played as Hugo on Hard (never played a Ys game before) and strongly disliked it. Maybe Hard wasn't a great starting choice or maybe Hugo just isn't my playstyle (I usually play as wizards). I got really tired of studder stepping all the time to try and get the max power shot.
I also got completely wrecked by Epona on Hard. No matter what I did she was just way faster than me (I could never outrun her) and I could only get her down to like 2/3rd's health.

Playing as Yunica (on Normal) though is incredibly fun. She seems much more fluid and I never feel like I have to game the system to enjoy the combat. Overhead stuns, whirlwinds, and normal attacks are just fun to do.

Does this game have New Game+? As in, after you beat a difficulty, can you continue with that character on a harder difficulty? Sorry if it has been asked in the thread, I've been avoiding reading all the way through it for spoilers.

Definitely try playing as Hugo again on a lower setting; he's my favorite over Yunica. Do it, if for nothing else than to unlock the "secret" character. ;P

In the Steam version you unlock him just by completing the game with either character. But I agree, playing as Hugo before him will make more sense than Yunica.

Finally got the hang of the power attack! Trick is to use the d-pad. I can do it with the analog stick, but it's not nearly as consistent.

Nearing the end. Levels make such a big different. Fought the desert boss, and he kicked my ass. 4 levels later and he was ez mode, like i didn't even have to dodge stuff.

Beat the game with Yunica and thought I was done with it. Decided to try it with Hugo and I'm hooked again. This game is so good... I think I prefer his gameplay to hers, and I definitely prefer his character. His bitchiness is hilarious.

I can get it consistently with the analog stick, it's basically like those SoulCalibur motions where you input a direction, wait for the game to register the stick being back to neutral, then press the button.

I've become a little better at it, but I mostly still rely on the d-pad.

Hah, same thing happened with me. I like that you can grind out levels relatively quickly. Hit a highly congested area of enemies and pound away, you can go up a level every 3 to 5 minutes.

Edit: I have not accomplished this mythical power attack either.

Power attack???

Each character has these moves you can do if you attack "right after stopping" or whatever. It's pretty much impossible to pull off with the 360 controller because the d-pad sux and it's really hard to pull off on the analog. x_X

Is it actually that strong? Think i've done it a few times, but didn't really test to see it's damage.

I use the analog stick and have the "always dash" option chosen, so no wonder I haven't seen it. I don't stop anyway, rather keep my exp bonus high.

It's pretty powerful. I found it to be a little too slow for use against a boss. However, it's fun to use against standard enemies, especially groups.

Dash attack is difficult on the Keyboard and mouse as well. spent time trying to get it down, but nope. The other power attack is easy enough though, just spam your attack and move direction. I think it was -> -> attack? In rhythmic fashion lol.

Just finished the game with all 3 characters. For those wondering, while playing the game as a second character for the first time, which story line is canon, its the last guy's :p.

After playing through Claw's story, everything made sense in Ys I/II. Though I was saddened that
Toal and Reah couldn't be together after all what happened
. Great game though, now go play Ys I/II for those who haven't!

None of the Bonus Shop stuff can be used in the main game, can it? I'm confused about whether the Ex characters are or not.

Should just be -> attack

Sorry for the simple question, but does the play order matter? I don't know anything about the series. Should I play Ys Origin or Ys: The Oath in Felghana first? Thanks.

Doesn't matter. Oath came first, but Origin is a prequel. I would play Origin first, but that's me.

They're unrelated enough that it doesn't really matter. Between just these two games you probably won't see any links between them at all apart from the gameplay.

Oath is probably more "standard" Ys, since it's one character, Adol, world map/town, etc.

Also, this is up for the Community Vote in the Steam sale, so people should go vote for it.

Yeah, if you're a person that enjoys playing prequels first, or as Koroviev said, would enjoy

the more linear tower level, then Origin. Otherwise Oath :)

Vote Origin and buy it!

Kinda lost at the fire dungeon,
Just got to the area with that death song but it seems like I do not have the song yet. Npc says something about that red fiery symbol on the 11th floor but I have no idea how to interact with it

Ah, nope. The last sword I got was the fire sword. I guess I'll have to look around more.

For some reason I had this backwards, I meant to ask about cleria ore :lol

But I think it's in that big room before the boss around the northeast section, but you kind of have to go around to get it. That chest might have something different in it though. Can't remember that area off the top of my head.

Edit: Nope, I had it wrong, apparently that has one of those potions that boost your HP. The one for that area I'm thinking of is at the very top of the place mentioned below. If you've already gotten used 3 cleria ore, then it's just a matter of your level/tactics.

Which character are you using? The solution to that is different for each of them.

I guess
Yunica, since you mentioned song. It's been a while since I used her, but I think you have to rush to the door on the west side and talk to the Roo. Give it a Roda Fruit and it will teach you the song, and you use that to stop the noise and can move freely in that area
.
