Anyone know how to remove the warning message everytime you open something in your download folder? The old terminal command for Lion doesn't work anymore.

"_____ is an application downloaded from the internet. Are you sure you want to open it?"

I am not sure why when I get a tweet notification in my notification center, when I click on Show, it takes me to the twitter website and not just to my official twitter app on my iMac...

Makes no sense.

feels like the twitter integration could use some work, it's not very good outside of being able to tweet from the notification center which isn't really that useful

In Safari is there any way to make 2 finger swipe left/right switch tabs and not go forward/back?
Under "Touch Gestures" in System Preferences, you can turn off or change the gesture to swipe between pages, but I don't believe you can remove it just for Safari.

I think that $20 was very steep for this. The speed boost is nice, but I have literally used none of the new features. Should have been $10 at the most.

Can't believe people are complaining about an operating system upgrade costing only $20. Even if you don't use the new features that's more than worth it for the speed bost alone imo.

These upgrades used to be $129.

Just got trolled by Apple. Email notification popped up on my iPad saying that Mountain Lion is now available...lol.

Still waiting for my redemption code.

I gave up after waiting more than 24 hours.

I had an iTunes gift card, so it wasn't out of pocket - but Apple seriously dropped the ball. I should have received my code the INSTANT is entered my serial number (that was scanned and purchased at point of purchase).

Fuck, your trolling in this thread is getting annoying. ML has exceeded my expetations, and pretty much every review I've read is pretty glowing. Its easily the most stable, best performing, polished, feature-rich version of OSX yet- for a ridiculously low price. Because you had some expectations that were completely disconnected from reality does not change that.
what expectations did i have? my first experience with the upgrade was an uninformative error message that signaled the install couldn't finish. that's the first failed OS install i've had since Win98. then it took over four hours to reinstall the OS off the recovery partition because Apple's servers were bombed.

perhaps QA testing was the 201st 'feature' that didn't make the cut. i read and enjoyed Siracusa's tome but missed it; let me dig back to see if it was mentioned.

but really, i think i'm allowed to voice a view that doesn't approximate an Apple press release.

also, why do you take my negative reaction to this upgrade so personally?

Just noticed that people who talked about downloading a torrent instead of waiting for the code are banned, so it may be a good idea not to suggest that anymore.

Yeah, I hope twitter app integration is implemented in the near future.

The speed boost is way overhyped. If anything, it brought it back to where it was with snow leopard. I think going from piece of poo Lion to this is what's fooling people into thinking its super fast. The Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion jump probably isn't very noticeable in terms of performance. Actually, my boot up and shutdown time was still faster with SL. That's one thing I remember fondly about SL.

Requesting my ML upgrade over at Apple's site. What is right to copy, and how many should I put down in the text field?

"If you are an Enterprise, Education Institution, or Government customer and you have purchased 20 or more qualifying systems, you can receive a Right to Copy license."

Talked to an Apple Care rep earlier. He said I was "approved" but I'm in a queue for when I get my email. I asked if I could just buy ML myself and get a refund but he highly suggested not to do that.

I'm being patient. I'm highly anticipating this because well, I'm home from work the rest of the week and stuck in bed...so I have nothing else to do.

Purchased this rMBP two weeks ago so it'd be nice to keep it up to date.

I had a windows 7 install screw up on me, luckily I had the disk, but it still happened. So yes it can happen on a new os.

That's very true. But a speed boost over Lion is completely welcome in my books.

Nobody ever charged $129 for such a menial update. Stop being dumb.

Yeah, I think it's more because the Twitter app would have to be updated to accept calls from Notification Center and display the corresponding tweet. Twitter has pretty much abandoned client development as far as I can tell outside of mobile phones and the website.

Still, I find Twitter integration useful since it's an option in Share sheets now as well as appearing in Notification Center.

Once I stated I bought my Macbook Air at a Retail Store, the fields greyed out for me too. The information is only necessary if you bought your Mac from a reseller.

Ok my 2011 MBA 11" has been acting strange ever since I upgraded to ML. The fan is at full blast and the thing is scorching hot and the only thing I have open is Safari. Help?

until someone throws out actual benchmarks to highlight a performance increase or decrease, all of this could just be a placebo. for me Lion felt no slower than Snow Leopard on the machines i use at work and home. ML is no different at this point, except for the growing pains associated with getting used to a slightly altered workflow.

So GAF, please help me. I have a 2009 white macbook with Lion. Should I upgrade? is it worth it even though my model is "old"?
it's a trivial cost, which is nice, but first see how many of the 200 new features will improve how you use your computer.

I don't care what Microsoft charged for Vista, it certainly had more features from XP than this does from Lion. I'd be hard pressed to even call this a new OS.
While I don't use many of the features and also consider this a boring update for my own needs, implying that there isn't a lot new here is silly. Text messages in the chat client, push notification center, Game Center, Notes, Reminders, iCloud, Power Nap, desktop mirroring to Apple TV, dictation, Twitter and the Share button, Gatekeeper, progress bars and other Finder features, automatic app downloads on all of your machines, PDF forms and better annotation in Preview, Full Screen on multiple monitors, etc.

But where? Is the folder structure exactly the same? And Right because when I was offline, I could NOT access the file. Well, via iCloud. Where does it store the iCloud "folder"?

Library > Mobile Documents

Once you're in that folder, take a look at the folder name at the top of the Finder..... iCloud!
All of the documents on the server are stored here and are accessible / opened when disconnected from the network.

If you want a brief understanding of iCloud without reading the developer documentation, Saricusa's review of ML should answer all your questions. Basically Documents in the Cloud are stored everywhere all at once - iCloud, your computer, your phone, your iPad, etc, and it is versioned, so that it can negotiate changes that happen on multiple devices falling back on 'Truth' which is Apple's iCloud servers if needed (like the first time a file gets pushed to the all the other devices). In OS X Documents in the Cloud files are stored in ~/Library/Mobile Documents/$APP/ .

Thank you very much for this!
I did browse through a couple of reviews but it was unnecessary, your explanation hit the nail square on the head.
I understand entirely now :)
I was hesitant to start throwing documents into iCloud but now knowing that a local copy is saved has allayed my fears.

Let me put it this way, the entire operating system is less than the cost of a single third party Mac app that enables Airplay audio streaming (Airfoil, $25). And that's just one of the dozens of new features in Mountain Lion.

I'm not seeing how $20 is overpriced.

So applications that use iCloud:

Mail
Calendar, Contacts & Notes
Preview
TextEdit
Pages
Keynote
Numbers

Am I missing any?
Looking at the list, how would you access anything saved to TextEdit or Preview on an iPod/iPhone/iPad?

Problem is that you can't create actual folders nested. At least from within apps. For compatibility reasons, folders are limited to one layer down. If you try to put another folder inside it, it doesn't show any of the contained files. So you have to keep it to one layer.

But... [Checking Mac mini to see if newly created documents were synced] Well well well...

It does seem to work. I am going to have to screw around a bit more.

Problem is, if you want files to be accessible to certain apps, they have to be put inside that apps special oddly named folder. But you can create a folder outside these other folders and put shit in it. I haven't tested with a large file. I wonder what happens if the file is bigger than your iCloud storage allotment...

Another problem is you can't create an alias to it. Well, not normally. It's weird but if you open Mobile Documents, the Finder switches you to a folder called iCloud that has no physical presence on the computer that you can see. (iCloud acts like the top level) You can put the folder in the Dock or Sidebar, but it's named "Mobile Documents" instead of "iCloud" and doesn't have the pretty icon. Also the ugly named folders inside it are ugly.

Interesting. Thank you so much for letting me know this. Experiment a bit now. Maybe replace Google Drive and DropBox both. But does Apple have a Windows version of iCloud? I've only used DB and GC for moving files from computer to computer and other syncing lately. But how fast is uploading to iCloud? I need to do some experiments. It's just a shame there's no status icon for it.

Will play around more and report any findings...

I dunno. It's a free upgrade for me (just bought a new Air) and I'm utterly uninspired by ML. Have applied for my up2date because I had a fanboy hovering over my shoulder egging me on but to be honest I really don't see the point.

Then again I didn't update from Snow Leopard to Lion until I bought this Air because I didn't see the point in that upgrade (and, having switched off all the iOS'isms I still don't see the point of SL)

It's faster than SL but maybe not by much. Scrolling in Safari is smoother than it ever was, there's no question about it at least. The thing is, Lion added some visual elements and stuff that's still there in ML, but runs faster. It's not like they degraded the UI look to achieve the better speed.

Heh, that sounds like what I had with Leopard long time ago. Killing it didn't help, it came right back. Had to tinker with some crazy terminal instructions to make some crazed log making process finally stop (then it came back couple more times before the issue was patched by system update).

Then don't bother. Why would you want a free update that improves overall system performance and about 200 other things?

Because there's a good chance that it'll break stuff? I do software development and I already know of a couple of tools I use that need to be fixed.

Got home from work, checked email again... no code from Apple. The applecare folks said they're horribly behind and it should take up to 72 hours to receive a code. Anyone else still waiting after day 2?

Well, this is interesting so far. I copied a 1.5 GB file to my Mobile Documents folder and am waiting for it to download.

It appeared greyed out almost immediately on the other machine with a progress bar next to the icon. And it shows the space used in iCloud Preferences. So far though it hasn't finished downloading.

But I don't think it can download until it's finished uploading which is probably what it's doing. Maybe I should start with a much smaller file...

Nice. It took only 30 seconds to copy a 5MB file and it looked like it was streaming it as it didn't even wait to upload first. Does iCloud possibly use Bonjour to copy files across the network to save time?

Edit: I'm still working my way through Siracusa's review. It's so big and he doesn't title pages in the pagination bar like Anandtech does.

Yes, still waiting. Applied for code as soon as service went live, yesterday at 8am.

45.6MB file: (From beginning of upload to end of download)

iCloud:
Total - 2:00
Started downloading immediately while simultaneously uploading to server

Google Drive:
Total - 2:30
Upload - 1:10
Download - 1:20

DropBox:
Total - 4:55
Upload - 1:25
Download - 3:30

iCloud kicked both of their asses! What? How? This is... this is amazing. The file even has a progress bar while copying. Now they just have to make it more presentable to outsiders. I'll probably make a folder inside my iCloud folder for all my other files and treat that like DropBox/Google Drive.

I think I might be able to rid myself of both Google Drive and DropBox. Possibly. I have a feeling the 1Password app for iOS might require DropBox for syncing which worries me. I'd rather not keep DB around for one app. I don't have the app, but I was thinking of getting it. Maybe they'll implement iCloud support instead eventually. Since the desktop version can access the 1Password file anywhere, I could put it in my iCloud folder and have the app access it from there. If they think of it that is.
