iOs 6 is a joke from what I've seen it's nothing like the jump from 4.0 to 5.0 was. It's more like 5.3 or 5.5 at the most and almost all of the "new" features are already running on Android for years. I love my 4s, but iOs without a jailbreak can't compete with Android at the moment. What the iPhone does it does extremly well but it lacks a lot of standard features..

like what?

haven't looked at android phones recently, I am genuinely curious. besides the obvious (4G) what did you notice were the big differences?

I'm a little disappointed with the camera. The white balance of the photos isn't right IMO; images lack the correct colour saturation
Those are two different things, not sure if that's what you meant....

Does turning off push notification for some of your apps help improve battery life, or is it an all or nothing kind of thing with push and notifications (same question about turning push off for some email accounts but not all). Would love to know!

Sure. each one you turn off helps. You can turn off a few or all.

OK I'm going to go through my collection and turn off the ones I don't care about anymore.

Not that my battery life is bad, just would like to maximize my situation! Yeah Asphalt 7 doesn't need to push me shit, etc.

Hmm... why is it, that I can't import my photos and videos from my iPhone 4?

I have connected it to a Windows 7 machine and it says there's space taken up on the iPhone but at the same time it says there's no photos or videos on the device. =/

EDIT:
Nevermind, I did it.

Why do my mail look like this all of a sudden?

I already tried erasing my Gmail setup and setting it up again but it's the same.

Oh god, do want. And now I've gone down the rabbit-hole. All of the stuff from LunaTik looks amazing.

I went ahead and pledged, so I'll report back on how awesome/lousy the case turns out. I went with the black polymer version and anti-glare gorilla glass upgrade; should have it before the end of August. For those who don't mind the extra bulk, I think the case looks extremely promising.

Speaking of iPhone cases, mine started cracking at different spots, so I'll be giving this whole "naked iPhone" thing a shot.

I used an Otterbox Defender on my iPhone 4. Worst case ever. It was great for the occasional dropped phone, but due to the shitty design, dust and dirt easily got in the case, often getting stuck between the screen protector and the screen. This eventually ate away at my screen, leaving little pitted marks all over my damn phone. Never again.

For my iPhone 4S, I'm using the Otterbox Commuter. It works well against falls, has less bulk, and allows me to use a Zagg front and back to protect the screen. It's been a pretty good setup, except that the Commuter's fit isn't quite perfect.

So I don't mind a bit of bulk if it truly protects the phone, but I must admit the Otterbox bulk is pretty bad looking. Those Taktik cases look fucking sweet. I'm just a bit sketched about built in screen protectors. The design looks solid, like the stuff is sandwiched tight with a gasket, thus probably not allowing dust and dirt in, but I'll have to see it to believe it, I'm afraid. I'll be watching that closely.

Do it. You'll never go back.

I've been tempted to try this, but I do occasionally drop my phone. I just can't do it. But hell, a naked iPhone is so NICE.

You using the HDR setting where it's not appropriate?

It's as if there is not enough colour saturation. This applies to taking photos of colourful objects. Even when taking photos of myself (I'm brown), the photo looks as if there is too much brightness applied. I do not 'tap' to focus or anything, but I have tried that and it generally makes no difference.

This is for the 4S by the way

GMail? Try the official GMail app or Sparrow.
GMail first though.

Sorry I can't actually help you with the Mail app itself.
It's Gmail and I'll never use the official app. It have worked perfectly for years in the stock mail app, I just wonder how I can solve this problem now.

Maybe it's Google's servers that have been acting weird today.

I am literally going back, so we'll see if I miss the naked phone or not! I do love using it caseless, but I often enjoy using the cased phones of my friends too. The extra grip of a bumper feels great. But until now, none of the options I've looked at have been right for me.

A bumper would have been adequate if I could protect the screen when the phone is in a bag or pocket, however I refuse to use screen protectors. The Beyza slip case I use has been the most ideal because I'm careful with my phone when it's in use, but I don't trust others to be as careful as me; and I've seen too many cracked screens on other people's phones to feel good about using it naked everywhere I want to. I have a friend with a Commuter, and it's not a bad case. I don't mind the bulk - I actually like having more surface area to hold - but I'm not happy about sacrificing the in-pocket screen protection of my slip case for the drop protection of the Commuter. I could technically go the bumper-in-a-slip case route, but there lies madness. Just too much crap in the way of my phone.

Taktik is finally giving me a tough case without compromising screen protection or usability. It's certified dust proof, so no need to worry about scratches and abrasion from bits of crud getting inside. The water resistance is just a bonus. I'd been looking at Lifeproof for something similar before, but was turned off by some aspect of its design. I forget what it was, maybe the plastic screen protector? I love that the Taktik has an easily replaceable glass screen protector. I won't worry about damaging the iPhone's screen when the phone is sandwiched between layers of junk in a bag or pocket (or dropped on a rock); and in use, the glass should feel no different to the naked screen. I'm hoping the anti glare coating even improves the experience of using the phone. I'm sure there's a catch - I might need to turn the brightness up or something - but it seems like the best of both worlds. We'll see.

I'm on day 2 of going without an iPhone case (screen protector on both sides, though), and I'm thinking of just going with a bumper. What's everyone's opinion on those?

I find the iPhone very smooth, which worries me a little, since I feel like it would just slip off my hand at some point, and end up on the floor/ground broken.

Bumpers are great for extra grip, and provide a moderate degree of drop protection. Just be sure to remove and clean them regularly, or risk little bits of grit working their way in between the phone and case, and scratching up your antenna band.

I have a 4s and I was using it without a case for a little bit. It looks great, but it's a slippery little thing. I've been using a Speck Candy shell and it is great.

Bumpers tend to put blemishes on the phone's metal band.

The iPhone screen is so much nicer than the iPad and every thee screen out there. The way it's pressed right up against the glass is like magic.

I love my 4s, but iOs without a jailbreak can't compete with Android at the moment. What the iPhone does it does extremly well but it lacks a lot of standard features.

I also hate that Apple thinks we're excited about features like opening Apps with Siri or sending a text when declining a phone call. That's basic stuff which should have already been there a long time.

Dunno, ios6 seems like a pretty significant update to me. Redone maps app from the ground up (my most used app), expanded Siri which also works internationally (huge for me, as I'm in Canada), FB integration, shared photo streams, passbook (which looks ultra useful), Facetime over data which many have been asking for, expanded phone options, better safari, a bunch more accessibility features, remodeled stores, and probably a bunch of small tweaks/features that havent been announced yet, not to mention software features exclusive to the next iPhone which obviously we don't know about yet. How many real features did ICS/Jellybean add compared to these? Every single time a new version of iOS comes out, so do the trolls proclaiming how everything 'has been in Android for years'. Even if thats true (which it isn't) who cares? Its the implementation that counts, and you should assess a product by its own merits and how it compares to the previous version, not by random product X which has its own pros/cons. Just like the copy/paste delay, it was irrelevant. Yes Apple was late to the party, but they also had the best implementation. Apple is methodical when it adds features, preferring to implement, package, and market them correctly rather than just fulfilling an avalanche of bullet points.

I own both a 4S (unjailbroken) and a galaxy nexus, and your line that it can't compete with Android is complete BS. I can honestly say I miss nothing major from the GN when using my iPhone. They have different strengths, but iOS still has a clear advantage in several areas including performance, stability, useability, consistency, and most important of all app ecosystem, both in quality and quantity. Maybe for geeks that like to tinker with everything it 'can't compete' for for the vast majority of consumers, it competes just fine in the important areas. Most of the people I know who have an iPhone don't even know about or use some fundamental features. Try to look at the big picture, not just your own personal needs/wants. Most of the people I deal with are not technically inclined, which is why I find those proclaiming Android as 'far superior' hilarious. Most don't care about ultra customizability. They want familiarity, reliability, consistency, etc. It's why I purchased a 4S for dad, brother, and sister because I know for a fact they'll be happiest down the line with it, and I'll have less issues and support to deal with.

They need to do this for the iPad mini (and the regular iPad as well). It's called optical lamination and it's awesome.

Guess this is the deciding post for me not to get it. The thing about it getting dirty easily was already a huge negative.

Been a couple of days now with having a naked iPhone. It definitely looks nice just keeping it out in the open, but I worry about it slipping off my hands.

didn't use it yet on my 4s, somewhere in between on my 4 although I was jailbroken and had a shitload of tweaks and themes installed.

Thanks. Anyone else care to comment on the performance of iBooks on the 4S?

And the iPod touch, too. Heck, everything. Looks so good.

Found an bumper-type case for my phone. It's all hard plastic (including the buttons), so no soft rubber that gets dirty.

Is it possible to forward or receive your sms on your iPad or PC? I've seen methods which require jailbreaking your iphone, but I'd rather not do that.

They do it with the iPod Touch, the problem with that screen is that there is no IPS.

oh really? I was under the impression that they didn't. I knew it didn't have IPS but wasn't sure if that was the biggest factor in quality difference. In that case, I really hope the next iPod touch has IPS. TFT (isn't that what it's called?) looks like garbage and totally takes away from the retina display on the touch.

I just switched from the Otterbox Defender case to Otterbox Impact. Not as much protection but this this is pretty sleek. They are $9.99 on amazon right now if anyone wants one

Is it true that Virgin Mobile US would be willing to pay for my Verizon cancellation fees, so I could switch?

I heard something to that effect, but I'm not sure if it was a limited promotion. Desperate to get out of my contract.

Agreed. I was shocked at how bad it looked next to an iPhone 4 screen. Ips makes that big of a difference.

Any reason why photos would be showing up twice in my camera roll? It's not the HDR setting doing the "save the original" thing, because it happens when I save photos off the web or even take a screen cap.

I mean, I have the photo stream set up, but I've had that going for a while and it never affected the camera roll in the past. Just randomly started doing this a few days ago.

Bump!

So, my phone seems to be heating up a lot lately, and at random. Not quite uncomfortable or painful, but definitely noticeably hot. There usually aren't any apps running in the background when it happens (I instantly kill apps I don't use). What the hell is happening?

is the location icon active in the top right hand corner,
I find any app that uses that will make my 4s go hot.

i have it sometimes that my iPhone gets hot for no apparent reason, I've never really been able to work out why.
as you I always kill all my apps every couple of hours, just cause.
could it be that you are still playing music or podcasts in the background as that app still works even if its not in the app bar. - not that that should lead to hot iphones... -.-

I don't actually keep music on my iPhone, lol. Good call, though.

I'll wait and see if it'll continue to do it, then probably visit the Apple Store to get it checked.
