Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of The Patriots 2.0 |OT| Kept you waiting, huh?

I know that natively, the game is sub-HD, but I have to give them credit - whatever trickery they're doing to upscale it to 1080p looks damn good. The IQ is really great.
Anamorphic scaling is less noticeable. We have notably better vertical acuity than horizontal.

It doesn't match the best of the 720p offerings on the system, but it's much better than 720p with no AA.

Did they ever reveal the budget of MGS4? Playing it again, I can't think of a single game that competes in terms of the production standards of this. There are better looking games certainly, considerably so, but every minute seems tenderly rendered. It must have cost a fortune.

Was there a huge marketing campaign for this? I remember seeing 1 commercial, if that even. I wouldn't be surprised if this cost half of what Halo did (for example) due to the difference in marketing costs.

Well this has reminded me how bad I am at MGS4. I keep getting spotted and/or killed. Mostly spotted. And killing allies with grenades. Snake is getting old...

But the one thing I never really understood is how best to use CQC. The running slam is good for a lot of situation, but things like doing body checks and interrogating enemies? I have no idea on how to do that. So how do you do it?

Massive marketing, commercials, those cinema commercials before films, posters all over the place. Sony were co-marketing though. It sold very well too.

I was just wondering about the production costs specifically though.

Pretty sure you do. It's not hard, though. The only time you have to use non-lethal ammo is when the BB Corps are in their human form and doing the creepy walk towards you. You can use whatever gun you want when they're in their armor. The only time you're completely limited to non-lethal ammo is the Frog battle in Act 1 after you meet Rat Patrol.

My statue for Laughing Octopus showed up after using non-lethal in the first part; which makes me think that using lethal attacks in that part won't net you the statue.

Oh interesting, didn't realize it had that much media.

I don't think we were ever given a number though but I'd like to know too.

Yeah, I don't think I can take as much time with Crying Wolf during a The Boss Extreme run. I'm also not leaving my camping spot. Don't care about Platinum.

I'm probably still stuck in "BBE" mode where I'm trying to speed through shit, so I'm also probably mistaken. Good to be corrected though!

Have a fun! Enjoy!

They are missing the flashlight one. Not really a CQC action, but still part of the close quarter combat tactics.

Here is a video playlist of guides I did back in the days for local gamerepublic website (CQC stuff is at the bottom).

(spoilers, of course)

Unless they changed it for this patch I am 100% certain that previously you could get the statues using lethal weapons on the Beasts and non-lethal on the Beauty forms.

No, it was always non-lethal on the Beasts, as well. There would be no way to get the statues for three of them otherwise.

The only thing beating a Beauty by non-lethal means gets you is their FaceCamo.

The dolls are only for when defeating the beast in a non-lethal manner, and that was always the case. That gets you the solar gun from Boktai.

I have a question though, to get Drebin's face, you need to have fifty weapons, do they need to be unlocked?

No. The only time that they even commented on a budget is when someone put a 60m figure out there. Ken Imaizumi, one of the producers of the game, said that it would've been multiplatform if it had that budget. That's all we really know about it.

Oh ok I think you guys are right, sorry about that. I was thinking about the requirement for a non-lethal run which allows you to kill the beasts lethally. d'oh

Combovers don't work when there is no hair
Installed this the other day. Made me smile so much when Snake quipped 'kept you waiting, huh?' when the full installation finished. Gonna start my replay next week.

Man, they should have hired Western mo-cap actors. Naomi would never move like this. So out of character and awkward.

Totally agreed. This was something we discussed. We wanted to do the shoot in Japan, but flying in and lodging foreign actors for months on end would have costed too much.

It was a dumb decision to ever have dual-voices. The Japanese MGS4 has the Japanese Liquid, not Ocelot though.

I believe the reason behind that was because the Japanese voice actor of Ocelot (Koji Totani) passed away a few years prior to MGS4 :(

Playing Act 1 again, it's like a straight flashback to 2008 and an embarrassing reminder of how terrible I was with adjusting to the controls.

Now you mention it, I do remember that.

I like how the B&Bs have a male and female voice, it would have been less goofy in 2 if Liquid/Ocelot had both VAs speak lines when directly addressing Snake, or whatever it was 2 claimed to have been the source of his appearance.

Given this mini revival of MGS4 with the trophies and the 25th anniversary, do you have any non-NDA'd anecdotes from the development you could exclusively share with us fine gaffers on this special occasion?

Fun to see the wellspring of MGS4 love in this thread. I remember checking GAF a few months after launch and being surprised at the outpouring of hate. Sure, the game's got problems, but I think it's a sum of its parts, and some of the parts are undeniably incredible.

Haha, yeah, lots of stories. One thing I recall was all the PS3 vs. 360 controversy at the time. (If you recall, it was much worse than it is now. I clearly remember having my family threatened by a fan when he became convinced that we were prepping a 360 version.) We had fun with it all though and put in a few easter eggs to stoke that fire, but I'm not sure anybody noticed...

As you all can see, Act III had the most problems. Credits goes to Shinta Nojiri for coming in at the very last minute and greatly improving it. He practically lived at the office for the final 60 days.

Overall, I remember being really worried about the game upon ship because of the cutscene-to-gameplay time ratio. I wanted the entire game to be like Act I & II, but I think the desire for a lot of special case fan-service stuff won out. I'm still really proud of the game and the controls, actually (they were drastically improved over what was originally intended to ship). Still don't have the urge to play it again though. Maybe on its 10 year anniversary?

OT but I never knew you posted here. :)

Thanks for the insights. A Night time ActI/II styled Act III would have fantastic .

Weird question, does anyone notice little squares on the screen during cutscenes? (not present for me during regular gameplay, and I tried two HDMI cables to be sure)

It looks like aritfacting (albeit they're larger than those though) that you would see during compressed cutscenes, but that's not something possible in this game, so i'm trying to figure out what it is.
