Persona 4: Arena |OT| Midnight's Just Around The Corner

anybody wanna play a set? maybe first to 5? (please no slab users)

I dunno, my main problem with this game is that I'm just not having fun right now or I'm not in the right mindset to enjoy it. I get bodied, that's frustrating. I win, and I still view it as a lucky win because I was mostly just flailing. Everything I practice goes right out the window in an actual match, and I'm adjusting to the stick pretty slowly. Maybe I haven't really picked the "right" character, but eh.

Pcik a char that compliments your strengths. If you have good spacing choose yukiko, naoto. If you're really good at mind games and reads pick chie/yu. etc etc

Learning a stick takes time....and a lot of salt.

I still get pissed when i get bodied.

Gotta roll with it and take breaks when it gets too much.

So I just learned that Yukiko can recover half of her health really fast if you completely ignore her. Huh. (I had her shocked and was recovering my own health with Elizabeth).

Still outlamed her though xD

Yu's DP into hyperbeam is so fucking easy lol

there are so many ways to get solid, reasonably safe damage in this game.

GGs yukiko guy

GG. So that is aigis pressure. goddddd I discovered the roll but way to late in that set. I think I hate AOA mechanic the most in this game. Until I get used to everybody's animation that shit is going hit me free on some char. Aigis also seems unpunishable by yukiko =X

Im sorta in the same boat right now. I've always been a slow learner but things are just going absolutely nowhere right now. I find myself just mashing A for the auto combo and its just not fun. The 3 characters that I've been wanting to play in Elizabeth, Naoto, and Aigis are not clicking with me as I thought they would be. I'm hoping thats just cause everything is so new and I'm just not used to them but usally I'm able to tell if I like a character or not after a few minutes. I think mostly though is that we just need to take things slow. Do challenge mode with each character and see what they are capable of and find someone that we have the most fun with.

360 netcode is finished and I finally managed to finish Persona 4.

I think it might be time to actually open my copy of P4A...

Ehhh, I've been watching streams lately and the game really does look like a lot of fun. Not sure I really have buyer's remorse, more of a fear that I'll treat this like most of the other fighting games I've purchased and shy away from practicing after getting stomped on.

Man this thread is really popping off. How would you players rank this game compared to other reputable fighting games?

This is the best fighting game I have played this generation honestly, and I have played practically all of them a decent amount except KOF13.

I thought I might ask, but there's no chance this plays more like GG than BB does it? BB infuriates me and the trailers and gameplay videos for this look similar to that.

I'm trying to stick with Naoto and Aigis, but I'm too much of a fuck up with those two most of the time.

But that's the thing; when I come home from work/school, the last thing I want is to spend my evening immensely frustrated. But when considering that I physically destroy my fingers when playing fighting games on a pad, I don't have much recourse besides the stick. But these losses have been so bad that I have come dangerously close to breaking stuff. I haven't gotten that frustrated by anything in years.

Taking breaks only does so much when you come back, and still continue to get bodied. Hell, it makes the salt so much worse after the fact.

I have been rotating through characters, but I really only settled on Naoto and Aigis. It's scenarios like this where I wish the game had a bigger cast.

This is the most fun I had in a fighter since 3s at this moment. Umvc3/mvc3 never came close.

I'm bias against SF4 since I never got into it since it wasn't 3s (lol where have we heard this before).

Never played an ASW fighter before so I can't say.
Never played KOF13 seriously.

On my enjoyment meter it goes like

p4a > 3s > mvc2 > cvs2 > umvc3 > TTT1 > SFxT.

Best way to learn is if you can have a training buddy and play sets. Offline or online as long as you guys have a way to communicate.

I played a set against perorist's aigis. It went 5-0 him with very close rounds. Even though I lost every round I had fun because I learned the matchup. I learned what to look for and what to not do.

There are games where I completely get dominated first round but I learned enough info and adapt to the point where they aren't quick enough to pick on it and I win the set. Its not about combos, or etc. Yes they help you win but they aren't the biggest reason for winning. Playing smart and knowing your options are almost always going to win you a game rather than combos.

If I could upload some of my replays I could tell you whats going in my head and why I made my decision at the time. I almost never blame my loss to something cheap, spam or something (I do blame matchup QQ). Its about evaluating your options and your opponent options and going from there.

Maybe take a break man.

There's a lot of stuff I want to do with my character that I just can't get done and it really frustrates me as I know what I'm supposed to do. But then I think back to two days ago when I couldn't even do a simple combo. I'll get there.

GG everyone in that lobby.

I am now gonna have nightmares about Teddie.

I seriously need to focus on a main soon. I literally just stood there and lost a round like a dumbass.

I still have fun even when I get bodied....for now.

This game is a ton of fun and is easily my fighting game of the year thus far till maybe TTT2 comes out.
Not that it had much competition in the first place, but hey.

To compare it to other fighters this gen, it's definitely near the top for me. I'm enjoying it waaay more than BlazBlue, SSF4, and MK (and I still like those games). I'd probably put it just below UMvC3, though I'm biased there since I love that game for it's craziness and team creation. I haven't played every fighter (I want to get KoF13), but I'm probably going to play this game for a long while.

Wow im honestly surprised at your guys impressions. I was expecting: Oh its good but its no Street Fighter or BlazBlue etc. But thats really cool the game is THAT good. From what ive seen the game looks completely awesome! Awesome artwork. Awesome interface. Unique characters. And damn cool gameplay.

I might just go drop 60 on it right now. Screw waiting for a sale.

I just hope it wont be like Skullgirls were I initially thought it was cool and only play it for like two hours then let it sit on my hard drive :/

So... Yeah, an ASW game! LoL. Had the game since release day, fully went in expecting to play Mitsuru... started playing the game with Yukiko and Naoto. Like the both, but have gone pretty much full on Elizabeth now.

Some stuff feels so derpy easy with Mitsuru... as much as I like her as a character, she makes me wanna smack her each time we fight, haha. "Better Luck Next Time!" I don't hate her or anything, but she (feels like she) has so many advantages in my Betty Matchup, lol.

Feels like the game is running gimmicks instead of being honest. On top of that, I have VF, so my tolerance for stuff like this is pretty low right now.

I'm kinda surprised you think that. I think it's mostly your tolerance, lol. I'm actually plesantly impressed with how well-rounded the cast overall is. EVERYONE seems to have an answer, if you know what you're doing, and each cast member has their "HOW FRICKIN BROKEN IS THAT?!?" Style stuff, similiar to KoF XIII.

The worst thing for me, here, is that KoF's "broken" is really hard to do for a LOT of players, so it's not nearly as annoying / constant. You can trip over something and land onto some crazy OP feeling stuff in THIS game, just involving an auto combo, or spamming of a certain tool. Having poor Elizabeth getting grabbed by Kanji gives me Raiden Dropkick flashbacks, lol. (Thank goodness for shock + healing!) Not to mention the game has the easiest to mash DPs ever!

Regardless, I'm really enjoying the game. While there IS a lot of Derp, the skilled stuff feels to be at a nice level, and adding on depth seems to be much more natural, so far, rather than forced. 90% of the time, I do feel like I'm getting outplayed if the opponent wins, and most of the "Ok, that was UNFAIR!" stuff feels like a lack of matchup knowledge.

Speaking of "unfair", I don't see how IK's are suppose to be so poor. I swear Yosuke countered a half-screen B from Betty with his. Yu's seems pretty solid, and Elizabeths is very viable VS certain skills. I'm still mad at Naoto's, I shot beam aver beam at her, and the invincibilty was crazy, lol. They feel like legit scare tactics, much like certain ultras in SFIV. Stupid amounts of invincibility, too... Fairly low risk, insanely high reward.

In the end, while I'm still a bit agitated by ASW's animation styling in some cases (why doesn't Mitsuru step aside of her limo's door, it basically closes THROUGH her body! And LoL at Elisabeth walking at an angle into a phantom elevator door that drawn at an angle, but the animation moves as if she's on a flat plane. Why does that feel so 90s to me?), but I'm enjoying this much more than Blazblue, personally. It's great to see designs with their brand of art personality, that aren't so oversexual and desperate as the BB designs seem to shift towards.

P3 music is great to hear again, and this additional intro to P4's music and characters has me wanting to get Golden. Spoilers don't matter (I watched the P4 anime, too), likeable characters are likeable, spoilers or no, and that's the important part, to me.

Now I wonder if I can make "Elevator Actions Returns!" into an online moniker... (Best online title system.)

Man this thread is really popping off. How would you players rank this game compared to other reputable fighting games?

A very solid modern fighter. It's continuing along the sme trail of "balance to newbs and hardcore" that every other fighter has attempted this gen, but I think it makes some actual SOLID choices. It's less of a mess than SFxT's release jumble, and, so far, feels fairly legit to play, if you calm down, and judge what just happened with a clear mind.

Very much worth giving a try, expecially if you want something fresh and unique, as far as fighters go.

Why do people like getting hit by charged Coup Droits?

I think the way people approach her charged Droit is, oh she's vulnerable move forward, and then they aren't holding back by that time. Obviously a smart player is going to smack you with a projectile or something but I've hit people so many times with a fully charged B Coup Droit, CH damage 2750......

If the connection is good you can learn to block on reaction because they flash white before it happens. TBH I don't use AOA too much but I had to mix it up since you consistently blocked low where other people normally block high. You're actually the only Yukiko I've played aside from one other person in ranked so I don't know the matchup that well, but I'm sure she has some way to punish any gaps I leave in my blockstrings.

Anyone up for games?
I will be later. Worked on my orgia hitconfirms a bit. Maybe I can actually win a whole match this time lol.

Aigis gets the Nu color pallete while Labrys gets Lambda... wish it were the other way around, but I can live with this.

Edit: Wow, Mitsuru with Litchi's color pallete gives her suit a whole new meaning.

And your the first aigis I've ever fought that was decent. I've only fought one other aigis and it was utter garbage.

I never noticed the flash =X maybe I'll react to that instead. I've been normally just looking at animations lol.

Man, I can't play your Labrys.
That other Teddie was handling you pretty well though.

So I tried to use items like that person, but my movement is still garbage.

Oh god, I should probably take a break from online matches. For a while I was at least winning every third match or so, but I don't think I've won a single one for a while. Man, I love this game, but I'm total ass at it.
