Out of curiosity, what's a mid-core game? I ask because I don't know how trash like Rage of Bahamut can be in the same category as legit games like Hero Academy:)

I'm somewhat sad to see this free. Not because I'm out $1, I really like Ichi and it was definitely worth buying, but rather it further cheapens the app store. Which further pushes the mentality of people only buying $1 games or free games. I think anyone trying to make money off the app store without using a sleazy compulsion-based freemium game (like Rage of Bahamut) is crazy. Even if my personal entertainment likes that they do keep trying:)

I do hope whatever you want to accomplish by making Ichi free pays off because like I said I do really like the game.
We needed to get more people to notice Ichi so that sales would improve. Making it free for a day hopefully helps.

I just wish Zombies Run was compatible with podcasts. it would be right up my alley, but I need my podcasts!

Yes! A thousand times, yes! I'm so far behind on my podcasts now because of that app.

And I think Zombies, Run! is pretty damn good overall. But I can understand why people would want more with the stat tracking and split times and everything. It is kind of bare bones in that regard. However, I'm an avid runner and I know the distances of the few courses I run, so I don't really need that info. I know how far I'm running and I don't need all that extra info. But I admit it would be nice if it were available.

And having the gps map routes for you?! You really can't be serious. No rational person would expect that to be a feature.

Speaking of non game apps, I'm using Epic Win again and it baffles me nobody took this idea and fleshed out more. It baffles me that the developers themselves aren't willing to update it anymore since they moved on to another project. Talk about wasted opportunity.

Yeah totally, I really liked the idea but only used it for a few days before it really became more hassle than it is worth.

This is not quite the same as a "task" app, but I feel like someone could make a JRPG style game where the characters in your party represent different task types ("Physical", "House Work" "Social" etc) and as you complete tasks your party gets stronger. Maybe it would be auto played or something. Could be cool. I just feel that if you are going to make a tast app based on in app motivation, you should really make that motivation more interesting than jsut bars filling up, you should see progression digitally.

There was an awesome looking game that showed up in some posts in here awhile back. It was like a one-screen puzzle (Donkey Kong style) that involved getting from A to Z across multiple floors, and everything on the screen, including enemies/traps were all moving in time with a rhythm/music that was playing. I'm going to wildly guess that there was a reference to Time, tick-tock or something like that in the title of the game.

Someone help me out, what was this game? Looked amazing.

Also, how's the iOS version of Chrono Trigger? Is there a dedicated iPad version?

And did the final version of the iPad's FFT:WotL (with updated sprites, retina improvements, etc) ever come out?

I'm not sure if it did, but I can tell you that the normal version looks really good still. I'm playing it right now and it's lovely.

It really is a powerful motivator. I was at my buddy's house just hanging out, watching some TV when all of the sudden my ipod starts beeping and apparently Nike+ Running had decided to create a world-wide event where everyone who ran that day got a special badge (sort of like an achievement) and extra Nike Fuel points.

Now, I never gave a natural fuck about either of these things until that moment. Just getting that event notification filled me with a real need to go get those pointless widgets.

Reminds me of all those studies and that TED talk about gameification and how it can nudge people into making all kinds of positive life-choices.

Do you remember what TED talk that was? I love watching TED talks with others while I work in the lab... better than music in the background.

Guys, I need advice on Infinity Blade. I finally beat the game last night as was offered the chance to start a New Game +, but I'd like to know if I should?

The reason I'm hesitant is that it resets everything except my stats, and I was a few armor/weapon pieces shy of having owned every single item in the game.

Also is new game plus worth it? Will I earn more gold?

If the podcasts download to your device and play through through iTunes it's supposed to work... at least I've read that is how it works. On very long tracks, it pauses them after a certain amount of time and plays the story pieces between the track, rather than after it.

I see a lot of people requesting Spotify support too, but the devs have said they can't implement it due to how iOS works, it restricts them from taking control of another app like that. Though you can just have it playing in the background and it will fade the music during the story pieces, it just won't stop/resume it like it does now. Maybe iOS 6 will help, but I doubt it.

You can also use something like Runkeeper parallel to Zombies Run, they both can work at the same time if you must have more detailed stats.

Zombies Run does have basic stats though, depending on what mode it's in. On the accelerometer mode it tracks Time, Distance (in paces), pace/min, and in the GPS mode it tracks Time, Distance (in miles or km), and pace mins/mile. And it keeps logs of all your runs as well.

You can also set the frequency of the story pieces, it used to default to about a 25-35 minute session (depending on song track length), but they added an option to double that so it plays twice as many songs for people you want to have longer runs or have the story split further apart as it resumes individual chapters between days as well if you finish the run (or walk) before the story ends.

Right then GAF I need your help.

So tomorrow I've got a flight from London to las Vegas, im going to desperately need some long games on my iPad to keep me from freaking out.

It's a 11 hour flight and I'm hoping that my battery holds out.

Not a fan of fantasy rpg's but am willing to try different things.

Battery wise you should have 10 hours worth, lower the backlight a little bit and you should be good.

Jailbreak + snes emulator.

Or Hunters 2. Or FFT (not reeeeeeally and RPG). Squids. Aquaria (that took me about 15 hours). Waking Mars. Monkey Island. Angry Birds?

Your battery will definitely not last that long though.

GreatBigWarGame. Easily last you 10 hours. If you like turn-based war games a la Advance Wars.

Not worth it imo, unless you really want a harder challenge. It will take you ages to get good weapons again. Might as well play ib2 if you really want more.

I think it's pretty good actually. Don't care for all the stuff you're talking about, just wanted a quirky little story and it delivers. The whole turn left here thing is a lawsuit waiting to happen when someone runs off a cliff or in to a train due to faulty GPS data or the app mis-functioning. You get "chased" from time to time, and need to increase your pace for a minute.

All that I rate a fitness tool on is how much it gets me to use it... and by that standard, Zombies Run is the most successful one I've bought, even more so than Wii Fit.

Interesting to hear a totally different take on Zombies Run.

Clearly I'm looking for something with lots of statistics and GPS functionality, but it could be a fun experience for someone more interested in the game/story aspect.

thanks for the replies so far, just downloaded hunters 2, waking mars and real racing, anything else worthy?

You could grab The Quest Gold if you enjoy old-school RPG action. It's easily the largest and most expansive RPG on the iOS. But if fantasy and old-school isn't your thing, it probably wouldn't work out for you, haha.

jukebeat/jubeat plus received a version update today, adding local multiplayer (via Bluetooth, apparently?) and a restore purchases button to the store.

REFLEC BEAT plus has also been updated. It is now a universal app (albeit still Japanese-only).
omg! That's awesome news!

Jubeat plus/Jukebeat 's local multiplayer isn't really for battles, it's just for comparing scores. But the neat thing about this is that the host can share their song data to the other device, even if they do not have the song! I thought that was pretty neat. Sad thing is that it's region locked. (ie Jubeat Plus can't join in Jukebeat game and vice versa.)

Reflec Beat plus being Universal is interesting. LANDSCAPE BEMANI GAME! Here's a screenshot of what it loooks like:
mc88T.png

Realistically, it's pretty squished, but for restricting it to single-player only, it's not too bad. Very nice for those who wants their Rb fix.

That game looks fucking idiotic. Why have a fake angled screen when you'll be playing on a screen, possibly at a similar angle? And it's in landscape??

My mind is full of fuck.

For anyone who enjoyed it before it was pulled, The Simpsons Tapped Out is coming back this week.

Downloaded it a few days ago from my Canadian account. It's neat the way everything's catered to the Simpsons universe, but I got bored with it after about 10 minutes. It's Cityville/Farmville with a Simpsons presentation. Nothing wrong with it, but I burned myself out on Cityville last summer.

Agreed man. It's really aggravating. Actually it's shocking how shitty tasks apps are overall. Even the beloved Wunderlist is full of flaws and ridiculously barebones. Epic Win could have really been awesome.

Try OmniFocus
if you have $40 lying around

Newer planes tend to have power sockets for each seat. My latest Air Canada flight from London to Montreal had a power socket and a USB charging socket for each seat.

As for games, if you don't like RPGs, try something like Kingdom Rush, Galaxy on Fire 2 (light rpg elements), Aquaria, Dead Space, Ravenmark, Starbase Orion, Dynamite Jack, Machinarium, Air Mail, SpaceChem, Crazy Hedgy.

Considering the game is already on the border of being playable on the iPad (it was designed for a much larger screen in the arcades) there is really no other way to make it remotely playable on an iPhone-sized screen. If you tried running the game in portrait mode without any sort of adjustment your fingers would be three times the size of the targets and you would not be able to see incoming targets from under them.

It's not optimal by any means, but the only viable alternative would have been not to bother at all and leave the game iPad-only.

Can you elaborate? I don't have two devices to be able to test this. Does the song play on both devices simultaneously, then compare the scores afterward? That's all I could ever ask for.

Thanks, so glad I asked! I really don't feel like having to slog over and over again for all of the items.
I'll just keep working towards the stuff I need to collect, and then look at buying IB2.

Anyone have impressions for Bad Hotel? Looks interesting enough, but I've bought too many games lately to try it sight unseen, even at $0.99.
I like it - it is really tough, though I'm not the greatest at TD games. It's a very cool aesthetic on top of a traditional TD formula; the "music" aspect is great but it doesn't affect gameplay at all. Stages are very short and pretty brutal, as compared to something like Kingdom Rush or Fieldrunners; at least in the first 3 worlds (5 stages per world), stages last maybe 3-5 minutes, but you can get wiped pretty easily if you flub on build order.

Essentially, you start each stage with a set amount of money and can lay down rooms (towers) from a predetermined set of 2-4 rooms. Rooms fall into either attack towers, heal towers, or "resource" towers that you lay down and earn money from in set intervals. You start with a single base hotel that you have to defend, and you place rooms around it in a branching tree pattern that you design. Build order is really important; do you lay down more resource rooms first to build money faster, or lay down attack towers to fend off creeps more effectively? Some stages are more puzzley; e.g., in one stage you have nothing but resource rooms and heal towers, so you end up using resource rooms as shields to block and protect your heal towers. And there are boss battles at the end of each world, as far as I can tell.

It plays fast and loose, which is nice since I find Fieldrunners drags a bit with 50+ waves. Definitely worth 99 cents if you like the genre.

played the first 6 levels. it's a unique take on tower defense, basically you place square tiles in any configuration to defend the "core" of your hotel from being destroyed. adding floors nets you income while mines and guns help defend against predators. there are also "healing" floors that regenerate tile health. the generative music is a little gimmicky so far but I do like the free form style of play. it lets you be creative as far as placing tiles to defend your hotel. there's also boss battles and difficiulty wise, pretty challenging already. not a bad buy at 99 cents, I have no regrets. plus it's universal.

Are there other good games like Happy Street? With the 2d (not isotropic), "streetview" layout and crafting/whatever other elements?

Yay, New Star Soccer!

Wish it made it fullscreen and landscape capable on iPad2 though (if it does it doesn't mention it).

No Zombies Allowed was really fun and quite similar, though I felt like there was perhaps more involvement gameplay-wise than there is with Happy Street.

No Zombies Allowed was more like a horizontal Tiny Tower than Happy Street really. Fun for a few days, then got old quickly.

I've tried this with my iPhone and iPad and pretty much works like the DS Single-Card Download Play function. The songs start simultaneously at the same time, so that's really good.

ie. Say on Jukebeat, I host the game on a DLC track that I bought on my iPad but I do not have it loaded on my iPhone.

After selecting the song, there's an option to host the game and whomever connects to it, the iPad will share the song to the iPhone for multiplayer purposes. After both devices have the song loaded, they can choose a difficulty they want to play at (both devices don't have to play one difficulty). The scores aren't compared but only just if they clear the song etc.

L9EYq.png
UGY3n.png

(Taken from my iPhone (client) downloading the song data from the iPad - Mid-game action!)

You can't pause the game during the song, but when the home buttons is pressed, it pretty much goes back to being single-player and the scores are desynched.

Can anyone recommend me some excellent platformers ?

Pizza boy seems to be highly rated, anyone played it ?

Also any metal slug style platformers on the store ?

Have you tried Gunman Clive? It's closer to Mega Man than Metal Slug, but I found it really well done and one of the few games with a virtual d-pad I could actually enjoy. I loathe virtual controls.
