Sony engineers working on PS Vita "cost reduction" for post-2012 price cut

we need apps, man, apps.

vita hardware is fantastic, i don't want to use it just for games

PlayStation Mobile might fix it if Sony approve non-game.

But I would like to see more vita specify apps thought. I'm sure more media steaming will coming. Hopefully more other kinds.

They definitely realise something needs to change. This is good.

So true.

It's good that they realize it for sure but that quote still irks me. I'm in that camp that believes Vita had the strongest launch lineup in PS history as far as quality goes. However, franchises like Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts, etc have all been crucial parts of Playstation and SE and Capcom were some of the biggest and most successful PSP publishers. I think it's weird that he'd be taken aback by the idea that people want these franchises on Vita before they invest. These publishers have shown zero indication that they want to support the platform with games like that.

The difference is Nintendo knew a profit was in sight when they announced the price-drop, Sony clearly don't.

The difference is that Nintendo sold the 3ds at a profit at $250. They had room to make a cut,, this is not the case for the vita. That's why the system has to be cost reduced to make a cut.

What about them? Sony halted the production of the PSP-3000 for Europe. Or get it from Marketplace sellers for 195 pounds, yeah.

psp_amazonhjl83.jpg

What about them? They were redesigned for cost reduction without features being removed, infact some, like the screen, even were improved.

So saying "The same way the Sony engineers made the PS3 price cut possible (cutting BC, Other OS). " when we have a precedent of the oposite happening with it's predecessor makes little sense.

I mean, what would they even do? Remove one stick? Remove the back trackpad? Remove the software based PS1 emu?

No price cut for holiday is ridiculous with the performance the system has had. They'll never have the support they do this holiday, they have to maximize on it or it's pointless.

But when it's not selling, even when the hardware is that good, it's overpriced from out of a business standpoint, right? I mean, you'd think it's not only about making a profit, but also about gaining marketshare. Since profits are unlikely when you are selling this slow, you might as well make drastic cuts to gain marketshare as fast as possible then later turn things around profit-wise, the way Nintendo is doing now.
But like I said earlier, Sony probably can't afford that.

How the fuck do you know a price cut will work? Have you done market research?

I'm sorry man, but you are way too negative. I'm pretty happy with my Vita.

I clarified that post above.

I think existing owners of PSVita should be happy, Sony finally seem to be showing support for it.

I would argue this was a great move from Nintendo, pricing it beyond 'reasonable' and having the room to adjust dramatically when sales dipped (and the library solidified).

Sony are playing catch up.

Sweet, I'll hold off buying one until they cut the price then.
The hardware quality will go down after a revision considering how Sony operates, that's the main reason I got a 3G Vita. Will be interesting to see what they remove this time to reduce the price. If they can manage to reduce the size of the system somehow then that'll be great.

It may not be a huge seller but let the system have it's first holiday season with it's big titles, then we can talk about sales at it's current price

This to me means a hardware revision, which is honestly one of the few momentum changers they can really pull off. Seeing as they can't mass manufacture at high volume the price isn't going to go down quickly.

Instead if they concentrate on a revision and perhaps a whole rebranding they might regain some traction (at least in short term but they'll need more to sustain it).

I agree, 250€ Vita vs 300€ Wii U is a hard sell, but a 180€ Vita vs a 300€ Wii U could work in Sony's favour.

I think the vita is cool but its just not affordable to people on budgets. To get a new system, game and memory card i'm over $300. No way in hell am i paying that for a handheld game system.

They cant remove anything. Everything is already being used. It was different on the PS3 when they could remove the optional stuff like card readers, two USB ports and PS2 hardware chips.

Sony are obviously waiting for Toshiba to get 32nm online reliably before they cut the price, but even then, a price cut without content is useless. They need to couple a cut to around $179 with massive IP. Monster Hunter in Japan (which still isn't on the cards), Madden in the US and FIFA in Europe. Have a special $179 including the game for a month, and work that razor blades model, so that third parties have people to sell their games to.

The negative turnaround for the Vita is quite a surprise to me. When the price was announced at E3, everybody was happy and the press applauded it.
Except for the 3DS price cut and the two Mario games not much happened between the announcement and the release and the Vita launch games were good and plenty, too. There were expensive memory cards, but at least here in Germany it was super easy to find a deal where you'd get one for free. When the Vita hit the market most editors were already down on it, and not just because they were iOS believers or 3DS fans.
The post launch period wasn't good and I expected more software, especially on PSN, from Sony. I expected the Minis to have trophy support by now, so they're fully integrated with Vita, and of course I expected PS1 games to be playable much closer or at launch. On that side of the fence, I can totally understand the frustration. But from a pure price viewpoint I really don't get how people have turned from being high on the device to being sour.

The hardware is perfect (except for the placement of the start and select buttons) I already own a Vita ...looks like I'm buying a white vita after all...ZERO interest in a revision....
The idea of "LCD" ..."Return of the PSP-GO Design" ect. makes me wanna throw up! good thing I'm not interested in the wii-u I have extra cash saved for the white vita bundle. Sony and their revisions geez.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
I read this as "The next version of the Vita will have less features so buy it now".

Maybe they'll retire the 3G Vita.

Me too, why else would they need to rework it otherwise.

Yeah, even the OLED screen is something they promote a lot so I don't think they'll touch that. Again, it will be a great achievement if they can cut the price without doing any sort of sacrifices.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
No price drop this year ? Damn things could get ugly this holiday season for Vita.

That means the online deals will only be even cheaper.

No... an online retailer has to do deals to shift stock at his price. Assuming the new price is a sweet spot for the average person, there won't be as many deals because they are selling reliably. (Or at least better)

Would it be cheaper for Sony to go with LCD display instead of Oled if they want to reduce the price of the console?

they're gonna relaunch it next year with a hw revision and price drop. sounds like a good plan to fix the vita situation, worked for ps3!

The Vita does necessarily need a price cut, it needs two things in my opinion.

1: Games, games, games! Where are the games?
I've looked over the Vita line-up and there still isn't a must buy system seller.

2: Lower the price or bundle those horrible overpriced proprietary memory cards.
I just checked on Amazon. A 32GB memory card costs £58.49.
I would have to be crazy to spend that on a little shitty card.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
He shouldn't have said that :/

Shouldnt have stated the blatantly obvious? The consumer holding out for a cut price now knows it isn't coming anytime soon so they'll either relent and buy because they want to play the games, or wait for the cut as they were always going to.

For those not really understanding, theres pretty much been a hidden price-cut with them bundling every potentital system seller at holiday season this year with AC, COD, Need For Speed, and other packs.

When people say this, I genuinely don't think they could have possibly looked that closely at all. An Uncharted game better received than the 3rd iteration? A Wipeout game, now with all of HD and Fury's content bolted on? The definitive LittleBigPlanet experience? Gravity Rush, an actual great game from SCEJ? Vast swarthes of PSP and Playstation Mini content? Great downloadable titles like Mutant Blobs Attack or SoundShapes? HD collections like MGS and upcoming ZOE? Capcoms premium fighting titles like Mahvel 3 and SF v Tekken? Persona 4 Golden? Mainstream stuff like COD, Assassins Creed, Need for Speed? Cross platform All Stars Battle Royale, Sly, Ratchet. Then we already now know about future content like Tearaway, Killzone, PSO2, and SoulSacrifice. The Vita is in no way suffering from lack of games, its on par if not stepping over the 3DS at this point.

$249 is an amazing price for the hardware - but I think people would be more willing to support the platform if there wasn't the hidden cost of the memory cards (this would be a moot point if it were only a requirement for a few games as originally stated - but so far the games that DON'T require a memory card are in the vast minority), as well as more software support. Once all the details about the system's launch were revealed, people started waiting for those third party announcements - and for the most part they just didn't come. We've had a few good reveals so far, particularly Soul Sacrifice and AC: Liberation, but until this week it really didn't look like Vita was getting any future support from Sony itself.

The price is not through the roof like PS3 was, but they still need more software to convince people to shell out that much money for a platform when the cheaper competition is getting all the third party AAA support.

Persona 4 Golden is coming out this November so I'm stuck buying the OG Vita. As for cutting costs, they could drop the cameras right?

There are already games out and coming that use the cameras. Sly 4, for example. They can't cut something that crucial and I doubt they're really going to cut any features; they will probably use cheaper parts where it won't impact the performance or quality of the games.

But who knows. Maybe they'll cut PSP support and we'll have another shitstorm on our hands. :p

No...3DS was already cheap as fuck after the pricecut (£149.99) and I got mine for £115 from Amazon UK. Deals will be aplenty.

I dont think that it matters that much actually, because pricedrops always happends sometime in the future for gaming systems.

True. Is it possible to change the OLED screen to something cheaper by the way? Are there cheaper alternatives that can provide the same resolution?

The only thing that hasnt been used yet on the Vita is the expansion port on the top. I think it is unlikely that they will remove this however, at least this early. Maybe it will be removed in some years if they still havnt found any good use for it by then.

I Dont have a Vita ONLY because Im waiting for the White one.

But I think its a hell of a good deal at its current price. The memory cards NO, but the system itself yes.

I cant believe people want the Vita to be priced like a 3DS. The Vita hardware is worlds better.

So i will buy the White one come november. And if they release version 2 in 2013 for cheaper, I may buy again. Depending on if they are downgrading the features or not.

I doubt they would drop the cameras, as they are low cost anyway (1.3MP on the back and VGA on the front) plus the AR stuff they are trying to push would not work. If anything got changed, it would proabably be switching the OLED display for a regular LCD.

You think OLED screens are the cheapest? Of course there are cheaper alternatives. Look at Sony phones, S-LCD at 720p. Though S-LCD is gonna look like shit compared to OLED. If Sony are gonna change the screen tech, they should at least use S-LCD2 (HTC One X).

Misleading thread title. I mean "They're going to reduce the price post 2012". No, really?

EDIT: Actually the title isn't misleading. This... just isn't news.

Including a game is still sort of a price cut of course. As the bundles will be LBP, Liberation and CoD, there's bound to be a bundle that has a game you actually want, right?

But I still hoped that they would be able to include a memory card, even if it is just a 4Gb one.

Complaints about not enough games for the system in the first year though, I will never get. BUT there will always be people who are only interested in certain types of games, and those will be able to complain the first two years easily I reckon, depending on what they're interested in.

I hope there will be a Miku or DJ Max bundle in Europe.
