Why can we not get away from this myth that COD is a big title for Vita?

Regardless of quality, CoD Declassified has the most sales potential out of any currently announced Vita game (with the exception of maybe AC: Liberation). I think everyone would agree with that.

Same reason why they'd carry a smartphone and a 3DS or a smartphone and an iPad. Two devices serving two different functions. There are many who don't use their smartphones as a gaming device.

I don't think there's many people that actually do this. Research Finds That 62% of iPads Never Leave Home

Seeing how CoD performed on PSP...ehhm I'm not so sure.

Edit: No, wait, maybe you're right. Thing is I don't expect CoD to sell very well.

From a software standpoint, Sony can only blame themselves.

It took them 3 generations to finally put the heavy emphasis on first party development. It wasn't until the dawn of the Playstation 3's release did we repeatedly hear from them about the importance of in-house game development. Had they stressed this priority earlier and forced the development or further cultivation of their first-party portfolio, they'd have the compelling software to back the Vita up already.

I agree there, definitely not claiming CoD Vita will sell like hotcakes or anything like that. It'll probably be disappointing in terms of sales and I doubt it will sell many systems.

But it's undeniably the biggest game and franchise on the Vita that we know of. There's a reason Sony has been mentioning CoD Vita at every single conference.

TGS seems like the last chance at persuading me into getting a Vita this fall, assuming a good bundle comes out or a great sale. Otherwise i'll get a Wii U :(

I'd say more or less as well as FIFA Vita, which (going by a certain tracker that is considered unreliable) sold about 300k retail worldwide.
Madden will be doing all it's sales in the US almost. To put things in perspective, so far no Vita games have passed 300k in the US either, only one game passed 200k and only two passed 100k.

I'd bet money FIFA Vita isn't close to 300k either...

Most useful thing ever that can only do half of what a laptop can do.

It's not designed to, either. But you know what it can do that my 15" laptop can't? Be the kind of thing you can unobtrusively take anywhere. I have both, I need both, but the iPad is slim, as light as a small book, fits in a small shoulder bag, has a 10 hour+ battery life, a super sharp screen, solid state storage, doesn't need to turn off or on, and is made to go from app to app in a second. Ergonomically, it's way ahead of where laptops are even if you want to bring netbooks into the equation (nobody passes a netbook around a table) - though I'll admit web browsing is still not the greatest. But it's made my laptop my de facto home computer for most situations.

So that's, what, 25 million iPads leaving homes? I'm sure Sony would love to have half of that number
leaving store shelves

Mid-year Famitsu 100 gave some idea for some titles too.

59. [PSV] Gravity Rush (SCE) {2012.02.09} - 73,885 / 73,885
66. [PSV] Tales of Innocence R (Namco Bandai Games) {2012.01.26} - 70,780 / 70,780
73. [PSV] Ragnarok Odyssey (GungHo) {2012.02.02} - 64,008 / 64,008
88. [PSV] Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Battle Destiny (Namco Bandai Games) {2012.06.07} - 51,111 / 51,111
90. [PSV] Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational (SCE) {2011.12.17} - 48,728 / 117,471

Although of these I can't recall which if any have been released internationally beyond GR and HSG.

Missed one:

24. [PSV] Persona 4 Golden (Atlus) {2012.06.14} - 170,568 / 170,568
Actually, I intentionally skipped it as there are more up to date numbers.

Garaph has it at 193,412.

Ahh, I forgot about the mid-year top 100.

Of those five, only GR and HSG have been released internationally. RO will be released in North America in October though.

Still not out in west.

And these are retail only?

Btw GR was only out for 2 weeks everywhere else when these were taken. As was Persona in Japan by the looks of things. Are these worldwide figures btw?

I don't know with the right title like Persona, seems like they aren't too bad on getting a nice chunk of the vita userbase, especially since persona was only out for 2 weeks at the time. Not sure how much Sony have been pressing digital in Japan but I'd imagine just as strong as here. Can't really tell what kind of numbers a decent title would get. Nor these digital only titles. Doesn't worry me much. Like you said, it seems reasonable for the userbase and other considerations I mentioned.

I hope everyone bought hotshots digitally in japan, great game, deserves much higher numbers. The psn sales hopefully done some wonders for it in europe (and america? not sure if you guys got decent sales yet).

Even if many people had bought Minna no Golf digitally in Japan, numbers would have been pretty horrible for the series. Persona 4 did nicely, indeed, but I can just see a stand-alone case (like Blue Dragon on 360, for example... The increase in hardware was the same as well!).

Yeah it seems only the biggest retail titles will survive at the moment. As well as relatively much smaller games like sound shapes and super stardust/ motorstorm rc.

It's not that they are considered unreliable.

It's that we know they guess. No methodology, and the second NPD numbers are released they alter their figures to align. Usually altering them on the orders of tens of thousands.

That is true, but I'm telling you, it's huge.

Yes easily since fifa is basically all anyone plays here.

It was a pretty faithful version to the recent console versions which have been great too and ridiculously popular, not surprised. I actually watched 2 people buy a vita (brothers I think) just for fifa when I went to a retail store for the first time in ages the other day. It's basically all anyone played on ps3 in europe. That and maybe GTA.

=-=-

Some world-wide figures from the UK play magazine earlier in the year:

http://thesilentchief.com/2012/06/03/ps-vita-sales-of-uncharted-golden-abyss-tops-500k-worldwide/
•Uncharted: Golden Abyss -530k
•Hot Shots Golf: World Invitation -200k <-= glad to see this did a bit better outside of japan
•Wipeout 2048 -100k
•Unit 13 -100k
•Lumines -40k
•Mod Nation Racers -40k

They all sell at pretty high prices too.

Does MS publish any digital sales numbers btw? Does it offer full xbox360 games digitally like ps3 does?

They don't cite tracker(s) i.e. NPD, Media Create, Famitsu, Gfk-ChartTrack.

So I'm going to assume chartzzzzzz.

might be the case. uncharted is at about 315k between the us and japan though, so it's possible it could have sold about 225k in europe without it being a totally crazy number.

Fifa Vita is not a system seller, no one will pay that amount for a Vita just for Fifa, especially if their not going to play online with their friends etc.

This is not the PSP launch any more, customers learnt with that console that what they thought they wanted in a handheld (console experiences) wasn't what they actually wanted, and the system died.

Fifa is not a system seller, people just always buy Fifa on the system they own. If there was a 'superior' console version, then sure I could see a lot of Fifa fans getting behind that console. Fifa Vita is however not the best version, no where near it.

Remember too that Football games fans are the most demanding and strong willed group in video games; they know what they want and can feel/see quality just by playing a single game. They follow the news on football games and keep knowledgeable.

Vita does not offer the best football simulator. It is not a system seller.

Anyway, the UK market is dead, games only sell with massive legs there - and unlike the Mario games, the COD games and a few others - no Vita game has bounced up in the chart or appeared again and again and again.

This pretty much sums it up.

The Sun gave front page headlines to how damaging the 3D effect is. Few people even know the Vita exists.

Correction, no one wanted a watered-down, gimpped one analog version for nearly full price of their superior counterpart. There needs to be a sort of eco-system of games before titles as a whole to sell. Since Vita doesn't have Mario, it needs to have everything else plus new experiences. People will take the plunge if they know there's more types of games to be offered.
