So as far as we can tell, the CPU is basically an enhanced Wii CPU? I remember reading a while back that someone in the know mentioned it wasn't even clocked over 1 ghz.

So no optical out? How do I get sound out of this thing...

Maybe they'll have something like the 360 had -

I did domething similar with my ps1 RGB cabel back in the days... 15 FUCKING YEARS AGO lol

HDMI into an amp?

Have Nintendo even confirmed if this thing supports any decent audio codecs? The OP is conspicuously absent of information on that front.

Remember, ZombiU cannot technically be another red steel, as Red Steel was Developed by Ubisoft Paris. ZombiU is being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier. If you know your Ubisoft studios, you should at least have some more hope.

Hopefully, just hopefully, some people from Rayman Legends or BG&E2 are working on it, but we'll see how it turns out.

Believe!

any nintendo direct is good for me! I'm certainly chipper today..

From today's conversations with a Nintendo rep, Pikmin 3 is not a launch game. Their focus is on Nintendoland, New SMB U, Ninja Gaiden 3, and hopefully Lego City (could slip). All will be revealed on Sept 13 but if I had to guess, Pikmin 3 may be a spring title. This gels with current marketing showing up in stores - no sign of Pikmin 3.

I'm okay with Pikmin 3 not being a launch day item, in fact I think it's expected. The real dissapointment is that it seems Nintendo needs to hold some games back for the beginning of 2013, so that means potentially they don't plan on having any other first-party games available in Q1 2013 that weren't show at E3. Again I expected that, but I am still holding out some hope.

I should think the benefits are obvious but then I don't have a DVD player in my fridge or alarm clock.

Really? Time to get a new alarm clock ;)

But you know what I mean. I guess I don't really see the benefits. Of course I saw it with the PS2. It was a system seller. And I can see why PS3 and Xbox 360 have it. They're multimedia devices next to game consoles. Surely people don't expect Nintendo to release a multimedia device?

Some people don't like to have 30 devices under their tv

Well... I wouldn't want JUST a Nintendo console under my tv... with or without dvd player

Except it would kill the drive. So while the benefit might seem obvious, the drawback isn't but certainly outweighs it.
No, it won't. DVD are played sequently with no random seeks and at a very slow drive speed. Games break drives, DVD don't

Thanks to technology, I can watch MST3K on my 3DSXL. That's good enough for me.

If you're that worried about a DVD player, you can buy one for less than $20 USD or equivalent. (even cheaper during the black friday periods)

That Wii U CPU rumor is obviously bull and doesn't make any sense. The Wii CPU's clocked "a bit" higher than the Wii's? The Wii was clocked at 729 MHz, so a "bit" more would be I guess 1-1.2 GHz. That wouldn't make any sense, something like that would be too damn weak.

Besides, IBM already confirmed that the Wii U CPU is a Power 7 derivative, did they not?

I sincerely doubt that (although there might be some laser-based consideration I'm missing).

I do know what you mean but I do think it's a bit of a missed opportunity. I don't watch DVD's often, but when I do I use my PS3 because the AV functions are so shit hot (I seriously doubt any next gen console will match the PS3 in audio functionality and quality). With the Wii-U having the padlet, it might've been cool to be able to watch films on that. I dunno, it's certainly not going to be a deal-breaker for anyone.

That's a very good point too.

Yeah you have a point. I guess I'm so happy with the dvd/blu-ray player in the PS3 that I can't phantom anyone using anything else for their movie business. But perhaps there are some Nintendo-only gamers that would appreciate the inclusion of dvd playback... and it wouldn't be expensive for Nintendo to add it I guess? Oh well.

So, question, everyone:

To all you launch day-buyers - will you be buying one IN STORE or get it from amazon, etc?

I'm going to pre-order from Game Stop the first day possible and then head out to pick it up at midnight on launch day, I can't risk a online order taking a couple days longer. I'm a sucker for a new console launch, it doesn't matter if it's a Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft console. I hardly ever go to Game Stop but I live in a smaller northern town that happens to not have much besides Wal-Mart and Game Stop for video games, and I'm not sure about Wal-Mart pre-orders.

As far as what I plan on grabbing it depends what Nintendo confirms is day 1, but based off the fact that it seems P-100 and Pikmin 3 are set for a later release, this is my plan.

Day One

Black Wii U (I don't care if it's white, but I slightly prefer black.)

NSMBU (The "no way I can't pick it up for a new Nintendo console purchase.")

Rayman Legends (If there is a single player mode. I think the multiplayer looks great but a new console costs a lot of money right off the bat, so I don't want to jack-up the bill with a game that I can't play on my own schedule.

AC3 (I have a 360 and PS3, but I really want to try a multi-platform game on Wii U. I just want to see how holding the controller for something like that feels, and to see if having the map on the GamePad helps or not. Darksiders 2 was my original plan for this, but alas I couldn't wait.)

Aostia

El Capitan Todd

I already have the PS3 for DVDs and Blurays, so for me it's not important.
I'd be way more interested in the Netflix application, if one day it will be available in PAL regions...also because of the Gamepad (I saw the app working and it was cool, with the double screen managing and switching between the movie and the info and so on) that I'll probably use as a TV remote controller (probably, I'll have to test it)

Don't really see the point of a DVD player in a console at this point. It's nice to have, I guess, but I get a console so I can play the games released for it. If I really want to watch a movie or a show, there's Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, Amazon Instant Video, Youtube,-- the list is virtually endless, and the amount of content is unfathomable. My PS3 is my bluray player- and even then I'm considering just selling it and getting a dedicated player after Sony burned me with their 3D bluray update (some of my blurays no longer function normally... I'm looking at you, Sunshine.)

What's so great is that Nintendo will be offering the majority of these services on the Wii U, so video content is pretty much covered.

This is all my opinion of course. I personally don't even see the point in having a DVD collection. My mentality: If you haven't used it in the last year, and you don't foresee yourself using it any time soon, get rid of it. I don't like lots of clutter, so embracing a digital future is precisely why I'm glad that Nintendo is pushing DD and streaming services.

If you reaaally want to get nitpicky, you could probably rip all of your DVDs to a large external hard drive and then very likely play those video files on the Wii U. Problem solved.

Guess what's all possible for ZombiU, nothing is safe in the town of Remi Gaillard

Jesus, none of you lot not got optical out on your TVs? Come on, get with the times!!

On my CRT-HD there are no optical outputs, on my LCD-HD yes, but it only output Stereo-sound through the optical out, and even if it supported 5.1 output, I'd guess my receiver can't handle LPCM (Pioneer VSX-D511).

I have to say despite using my PS3 for movies I'm definetly intrigued by operating an app like Netflix and Nintendo's whole using the GamePad to work your TV idea. I could totally see me using the Wii U a lot just because of something like picking up the GamePad and being able to operate the TV.

It doesn't seem like a big thing, but Nintendo has said how they want people to just grab the GamePad when they walk into a room and have that get them into playing and I could see it working, on me at least. There is definetly times where I'm choosing whether I want too relax by watching television or start playing a game, well if I have the GamePad in my hand I could totally see me just switching my TV input with the GamePad and booting up a game, or just start playing on the GamePad while the TV's going.

I wasn't a big fan of the Wii, despite being a big Nintendo fan, but these little ideas with the Wii U that might not seem like big deals could definetly have an impact. The PS3 kind of proved this with me a few years ago. For the first 3yrs of the gen I always bought multi-platform games for my 360, but once I started using my PS3 for thing like movies and mlb.tv I ended up getting used too turning it on and it's been my primary console since then.
