Vita firmware update locks memory cards

If you think thats bad try being an expat in country. Since after the PSN hack, they went and cockblocked foreign card usage on the JP PSN store, when it used to work before. AND on top of that they dont have an "on /off" switch like steam to authorize a foreign CC to be used with said account. I talked with a rep about that and guy who was a gamer also said, yeah basically does not look like any sort of system was put in place for expats.

This fucking country really needs to get its goddamned head out of its ass and realize that there are still a lot of folks who work & live here that dont have JP registered CCs.

So why not go and get a Japanese credit card or a PSN prepaid card from a convenience store??

Why the hell do they allow multiple accounts on PS3 but pull this kind of bullshit with the Vita?
Something something security PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT OUR RIVAL USES SD CARDS JUST FINE.

I just want my goddamn YouTube app...
It's not quite what you're after, but I did find a widget somewhere to allow you to download Youtube videos onto your Vita and watch them with the video player. Ironically, I used that to watch the last Nintendo Direct on the bus into work!

Because most sensible people dont want more than a single credit card.

The fact that the system is archaic is the problem, not having to go out and get PSN cards. Just goes to show they still dont got their dicks on straight when it comes to thinking on a more "global" level.

Wait, because I didn't do a backup and I wasn't on my main account when I updated the firmware, I now lost all my save files?
Tells me I can't copy save data from my PC that I'm not the owner of (because I had to copy it to the PC from my other account). Any way around this?

Anyone?

Aren't you guys happy now? Instead of having one 32GB memory card for all regions now you have to own 3 (one for each region)!

Am I right Gaf? Gaf.. :((

Of course Sony, just go on screwing those who are/were willing to fork out cash for your superb little device by stabbing them in the back. God damn, first Psygnosis, now this shit, you're loosing goodwill left and right.

W T F F ? ?

Sony why are you being so lame?
First you limit one account on a system so we have to switch for our import games and DLC. Now you do this.

Next you're just going to cut out Region Free games altogether.

switch back to your main acc without the memcard plugged into your vita, plug it back in and you're good to go. :)

you can't copy savegame files to any other account than the original. on a pc/mac you could copy psp/psone saves into the appropriate vita account folder to make ot work.

They must be making good money off those sticks. Next update will take more than 3gig to force people to have a bigger memory stick if this continue.....

if more bs like this happen, i won't buy a vita. Singaporeans mostly buy games from different region..... :(

Because apparently NO ONE wants to add proper multi-account support to portable devices. Period. It's a problem on Android and iOS devices too, and even on the relatively more open PSP we were suck authenticating it only one device at a time. My guess is that either they all want to encourage more sales of portable devices so everyone has their own, even if they're expensive and probably best shared like an iPad, or they seriously don't understand/care there might actually be demand for sharing.

well that sucks. i have psn+ on an account but I use another one for gaming since I have a lot of trophies in it. I was hoping to buy the white vita and have access to the psn+ vita perks on my main playing account. oh well, will wait for price drop/remodel/better firmware/multiple acounts.

Really hope that's something that gets added someday.
If I can have that I won't mind as much about having to have 2 different Memory Cards.
(Though that itself is still lame)

That wouldn't work. As soon as I put in the memory card, he asks me to format it.

The dumb thing is, I'm not really trying to copy the save file to a different account, but back to the original account.
So basically, I played on account A then switched to account B before the firmware update, which means the save file is now still on the memory card but account B is activated (and can't use the save file).
Now I update the firmware and I'm stuck with the save file on the wrong account. When I switch accounts I have to format the memory stick and lose the save file. If I copy it on the PC or PS3 before switching accounts, I can't access the files anymore because they were copied from a different account.
The only thing I can think of now is downgrading the firmware, is that possible?

Bit of a shitty move really. The only thing I personally have used this for is to get netflix on ym uk account (why they hell that isn't available in europe is beyond me.

Il just have to back the app up to make sure I can still get it if anything goes wrong, I guess.

Meh sucks but luckily doesn't effect me to much.

They should have at the very least warned people they were doing this so they could get there accounts in order as best as possible.

Does this mean things like Netflix won't work or are they OK?

and this isn't that big a deal is it? Your level of pain will depend on the size of memory card you buy.

You have to format the console any time you switch regions anyway, which messes up the bubbles and is a pain. The only difference now is you also need to swap the memory card.

Worst case you'll need three - one per region - but they can be smaller ones as you're putting less on them.

Frankly I won't bother - formatting the vita losing bubble location etc is bad enough to put me off changing regions at all.

By the time you guys upgrade to 32, you'll have a spare card. Who is actually switching accounts that much anyway, it is such a pain..

exactly.. tried it once (thought I could use the youtube app on my EU account, NOPE)... it was a pain to rearrange everything again.. even getting my trophies to show again was a pain..

Doesn't seem like you could roll back the firmware, or at least I don't see that you could.

Now that's dumb as hell. Even if you didn't play them or access them at all with Account B, because you copied them over with Account B, you can't access them at all with Account A, the original account?

What the heck are they doing over there? Aside from finding silly ways for profitability?

So you can't now change PSN accounts or what? Sorry, but I missed something :\
No, you can. You need separate cards per account now. If you were using just one card and just switched between accounts, Sony decided to not allow you to do that anymore.

I don't get it....you are having problems with sales...yet you have Vita users who are buying games looking forward to buying more games..

why fuck over the folks who are supporting your system?

This doesn't even affect me because I only use one region, but this is fucked up...its not that its impossible to get around...but the thought that they would go out of their way to fuck over consumers who want to purchase more games is what sickens me...I hate negative mentality like that.

is that really worth selling some 4gb cards? which could probably be found everywhere on craigslist for $10 or so?

edit- AND WHY THE FUCK ISN'T MADDEN VITA IN THE VITA STORE OR REGULAR STORE??? YET THE PS3 VERSION IS IN THE REGULAR PSN STORE! WTF? JUST UPLOAD THAT SHIT U DUMB FUCKS!

Yes, and I'm out of ideas by now. Seems like I really lost all of my Vita save games (and those include completed files for Gravity Rush, Disgaea and Everybody's Golf). I'm so close to throwing that thing out the window.

Well Sony doesn't seem to care about you guys anymore, right now all they want to do is make money of their Memory cards. They don't care if you bought a 32GB one where you have games, save files and apps from multiple regions at all :/

I stopped switching regions not long after buying a Vita (it really is too much messing about) but it's a dick move from Sony to those people who did still do it

Isn't Vita advertised as region-free, or at least demonstrated by yosp as region-free? It isn't fair at all, and I'd personally find some way to give Sony an earful if it were entirely possible.

This sort of thing was never listed in the firmware update list, was it. Of course not. :|

Well, in theory, it is region-free. You even can use more than one region at a time as long as you don't participate in the digital revolution.
In practice they're making it as hard as they can to comfortably use more than one region.
Other than "dat screen" I really don't know anything that speaks for the Vita anymore.

Ugh this is really annoying. I refuse to buy another goddamn memory card.
Guess I will just be restricting myself to the JP store since it seems to be the only one worth a goddamn anyway.

Sony really just wants to make this the least user friendly handheld ever.

What pisses me off the most about this is the fact that the eco-system that Sony used prior to this, on the PS3 and PSP, actively encouraged you to purchase content across multiple accounts. So, because of this I have a number of PSP and PS1 games scattered across 2 or 3 accounts; sadly, paranoia has won out of with the design philosophy of the Vita, and my ability to use this content with ease on the Vita is completely gimped. I don't particularly want to reset my Vita every time I want to play a PS1 game I have on a secondary account, it's just too much hassle. I feel like they've punished me for using their system in a way that they clearly intended on the PS3.

Oh, and don't get me started on how they deliberately gimped account sharing. I support them reducing the limit to 2, because 5 always seemed a little too generous, and open too much abuse. What I don't support is them slyly limiting the feature to one account across 2 Vita systems. They know with trophies and other account features, that hardly anyone is going to use their Vita in that way. It's the sort of thing that makes me reconsider my decision to buy a Vita.

So, c'mon Sony, we know that nasty hacker, geohot, touched you in a bad place, but this is going way too far.

When your platform is struggling, is it really a good idea to take extra measures to disenfranchise some of its most enthusiastic users?

I really hope they learn the errors of their ways and reverse this with the next update.
Though it's unlikely.

Ok, that made me almost LOL.

Love my new Vita. This change doesn't seem that bad to me, but then I'm a Vita newbie and I never even used PSN before (never had a PS3) and only plan to use one territory.

However... 9 PS1 games? Seriously Sony? You know I just bought a 32GB card -- you DO want me to BUY content for it, yes? Yes...?

I really hope they learn the errors of their ways and reverse this with the next update.
Though it's unlikely.

Why did they even do this change? How does it protect them at all? As long as people are BUYING content, why should they care what account or territory it comes from? I can understand region locks for physical goods, because you produce a certain targeted quantity etc., but for digital?

I would guess this is actually how they wanted it to be from the beginning, but they didn't notice the "loophole" until people started using it.

Why? Why would they do this? Take steps backwords.

This has actually pissed me off quite a bit, and it takes a lot to gat me angry. The only real issue I had with the Vita was how you could only have one account at a time. Don't really get about the money, but more about the convenience. Now they've gone and made it fucking worse.

I bought a 32Gb card to hold the odd US stuff. Now I probably don't need one any where near that big. I have a spare 4Gb, but that won't be big enough. On top of that the memory cards are so small, I'm worried that if I take my card out, I'll lose it.

Stupid shite like this just makes me jaded about gaming in general. Honestly, if I heard this news a month ago, I probably wouldn't have bought a Vita. Well not now anyway

Ok now I understand your problem. It seems that the only way to solve this, is to get a Vita below 1.8 (perhaps you know someone with a Vita who didn't update yet or you know a small retailer who let's you do this in his store with a used Vita?), switch to your account A on it, plug your memcard into it and then save your data on PC/MAC/PS3, then wipe out your account A on the said Vita.
