yeah he is pretty excellent at switching up his style. almost all of the artists he produces for / has produced for have a really distinctive sound.

other acts he's worked with that i recommend:

meg
coltemonikha
kyary pamyu pamyu

wikipedia has a list of everything he's produced, with full albums also listed:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasutaka_Nakata
ystk MEG is a hit and miss for me, there's a few songs I like but her albums are pretty much bland. Her pre-ystk albums are <3 though, as well as her recent cover album and TRAP. I love her for FREAK since Hadouken! is one of my favourite bands and I was pretty amazed by ystk remix which gave it a totally different sound.

i will be the first to admit i haven't really listened to much meg outside of the yasutaka nakata produced stuff. i will definitely have to check more of it out. i do really like TRAP though (produced by shinichi osawa, another of my faves) and you are right about FREAK, very cool song and love the remix :)

edit: forgot to mention, i found her album produced by shanghai restoration project to be a big letdown. "Just Like That" is ok, but the rest is so meh :(

I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with them, but..

Genki Rockets released 'Genki Rockets II No Border Between Us Repackage' today in Japan.

It contains two new songs, and a collection of remixes for their second album (No Border Between Us) and first album (Heavenly Star).

I love AKFG to death. I do wish I could get into another band....

I also wish they had t shirts or or posters or misc crap I could buy. I had to import one of their CDs at a pretty penny to get an official shirt.

Been a really poor year for Japanese album releases thus far, in my experience. Last year was a treat, with Tokyo Shoegazer, Kimura Kaela, Sphere (the shoegaze band, not the shitty girl group), Takahiro Kido, LITE and YOMOYA putting out great music. 2012 has disappointed though. I'm gonna have to dig deeper than before and really scour the right blogs to try and find some good stuff.

I have been blessed with these two awesome albums though...

Anoice - The Black Rain

Know about these guys for a good few years now and they always deliver. It's ambient-electronic stuff, generally low-key and downbeat, but brimming with atmospherics.

Taffy - Caramel Sunset

Great stuff this. Really infectious guitar-pop, clearly channeling britpop bands like Elastica while adding their own distinctive Japanese flavour.

Lots of albums for me this year so far.
killing Boy, The Predators, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, mudy on the sakuban, 80Kidz, Straightener, Siberian Newspaper, plenty, Orange Range, My First Story, Man With A Mission, Lyu:Lyu, Keytalk, indigo la End, Hinto, Hello Sleepwalkers, The Flickers, [Champagne], BIGMAMA, Back-On, The Back Horn, Andymori, Arukara, avengers in sci-fi, ART-School, another sunnyday.

2012 was a great year (listening to 90 bands helps). And it's not over yet, a new NCIS album is coming this month, Ogre You Asshole this September, I guess we'll hear about the new ONE OK ROCK soon...

Was the new Back Horn any good? Last album I listened to was Headphone Children. Heard they got kinda shitty after that, especially cause Yamada's vocals gave out.

Liv Squall (the latest album) is one of my favorites.
Asylum, that came out 2 years before wasn't good, definitely one of their weakest works. Not shitty, but not as good as things like Ningen Program or Headphone Children.

So, The Back Horn may not be as amazing as before, but the latest album is still great imo, and waaaaaaay better than Asylum.

Also, hype level through the roof for androp's new single.

Ah, good stuff. And yeah; I'm not expecting NP or Shinzou Orchestra by any means, I think those days are long gone. What was your favorite album of 2012 and 2011 respectively? I kinda fell out of the scene a few years ago, and it doesn't really help that musicwhore and Keikaku.net are kinda dead these days

Tough question. I'll give you three for each year if you don't mind but it's still hard to decide.

So far in 2012 :
Schwarzenegger by [Champagne] - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz4ZSIELkMA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKWWZKKzRQ4&feature=relmfu
Drama by Arukara - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBVLPvy3qiU
Destroying Beauty by killing Boy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx8To9SmtXc

2011 :
Zankyo Reference by ONE OK ROCK - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV4vcr8E4HU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgjgACnHuWQ&feature=relmfu
Echo by Nothing's Carved In Stone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WVl_ZtLNoE&feature=plcp
http://youtu.be/4eHjD201e1M
A World Of Pandemonium by the HIATUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oro0b9dHC2c

Don't know if you'll like them but hey.

That's only if he can buy it in an iTunes store that's not Japan. Last I recall most, if not all, music is FairPlay DRM-protected in the JP iTunes store. Would be better off buying the CD...
American and Europe iTunes store has everything up to Sugarless Girl...

If you wanna buy more jpop though you're gunna need a Europe iTunes account.

I was checking out this Listmania to see what kind of Japanese stuff was available legit through Amazon MP3 and thus bumped into My Story from Sayaka Suzuki. Kind of fell in love with it. If there's much else that's out there that sounds like it I don't know how to search for it, but the closest things that come to mind are maybe some songs from Rodney A. Greenblat or Loco Roco. My favorites from this album are (I'm So) Happy, Angel, and Rainbow Color.

What's bugging me now is I can't find out anything more about this artist. There are several more albums available, but as far as Amazon and iTunes are concerned they all have the same release date so I can't even go in order. Wikipedia knows nothing, and going for a more general Google search I find a photographer, an anime character, or sources with a subset of the information present on Amazon/iTunes.

Yeah it's pretty good.
Don't know if they'll ever top Documentaly though but hey.

Anyway I listened to Nothing's Carved In Stone latest album, Silver Sun.
Damn. It's amazing. It's like they put all the best things from their previous albums in one CD.
They keep on blowing my mind, I seriously love them.
And it's a great year for them. It's their major debut, two anime openings, Silver Sun ranked 11th...
