Wii U Thread - Now in HD!

There is little to no chance this WONT be streamed somewhere, its wii u big coming out party it would be a bit of a pr nightmare if this wasnt streamed or if any of the news was embargoed it would be silly.

Announcing the release date, price, and launch titles is "The Wii U's big coming out party"? E3 was the big coming out party. They flubbed it, but that's what it was. And no, it wouldn't be a PR nightmare if it wasn't streamed even if it was important. Just look at Apple, their huge conferences (like the one the day before Nintendo's!) are NEVER live-streamed. They always post the fully-polished video hours later.

What can we realistically expect in terms of post launch games announced? I expect a late RE 6 port to be announced, plus Dead Space 3. Obviously there will be no EAD Tokyo game or Retro studios game, as both of those will be late 2013, early 2014. What else can there realistically be?

I would say realistically we can't expect any at all in any shape or form, not at the event that's sole purpose is to announce launch details. Otherwise it would just be confusing people, or make them wait before buying ("Maybe I'll buy it next winter when I can get Resident Evil and GTA...if I haven't gotten a different console first." If there are any, it would be some huge first-party title to try and entice more consumers to buy Wii U ("Buy our system for NSMBU now and get Super PokeMetroid: Return of Ness in the summer!")

I hope they do this. There needs to be some promise and hype for the future of the console, which i think are lacking at the moment. We need a taste of what is coming, sure it is reasonable to show the games that will be available shortly after the console's release but Nintendo needs to demonstrate their vision of the future, both graphically and from a gameplay standpoint.

So far, only Ubisoft (and maybe Gearbox with Aliens) has shown the potential of the console's features, unless someone thinks games like Nintendo Land and Pikmin (which is mostly played with Wiimote i think) are representative of where Nintendo is going with WiiU.

I think a Smash Bros 4 CG trailer would do wonders. Wouldn't take that much effort, it's going to happen eventually, and why not at the launch of the latest console?

Nintendo are so worried about holding back, give us all you got baby!

I forgot how sexy the Pro Controller is. I'm imagining playing an HD MonHun with it... mmm...

Ah, day dreaming again. Reality is so harsh.

Anyways, I've been out of the loop for a bit, so two questions:

1. Is NSMB U still a launch day title or just launch "window?"
2. What color is everyone getting at launch? I'm leaning towards black, even if it is more dust-friendly.

Didnt they reconfirm it as launch after that rep said it was 'launch window' and caused everyone to freak-the-geek out?

Black for me. The piano black matches my tv perfectly.

If they don't have anything new (game-wise, not OS/online/and other features of the system) in store to show off Thursday then Nintendo is truly bonkers.

This is confirmed.

But I think they will show new games and 2013 stuff. And this has possibly been confirmed on the previous page by someone potentially in the know.

Nintendo will do a massive blow out on exciting post-launch 2013 games.

Like Pikmin 3, P-100 and Lego City.

Get prepared for bonkersness, then.

Although I can sort of see Nintendo's point. This is a launch conference; if the hardcore perception of the launch is week, why would they want to encourage them to wait by showing later titles?

Apple has done live streams occasionally. Their live streams have been the same as their "fully-polished" videos, barring the increased likelihood of the internet melting down when they're live.

But yeah a live stream isn't a huge deal as long as there's enough press there, and assuming they want others to see it, they post video later. Considering the time it'll also be easier for most people to watch it later at their own leisure anyways. It'll be at 7AM for me, I'd rather watch later when I'm not groggy as hell.

(that is a lie, if there's a live stream I'll probably get up early and watch, might as well get the disappointmentton over with earlier in the day)

I always ask if we know anything about a region lock and never get any replies

It's still conjecture right? We don't really know, just because of 3DS?

Nintendo would get a very angry letter in German, English and Japanese if true *fighting stance*

I've replied pretty much every time I've seen some post about region locking. :(

Note that right after the DSlite: the DSi, DSiXL, 3DS and 3DSXL were all region locked. Sounds like a new policy to me.

Nintendo has had region free handhelds until they introduced online services with the DSi. They cited the different ratings systems as a major issue (for them) in that regard. Their home consoles have always been region locked, mostly because of the different TV standards (PAL/NTSC, 50hz/60hz). When that slowly became no longer an issue, they introduced online services as well with the Wii. That, coupled with the money thing (importing from other territories makes a mess of sales data for each territory), seems to be a strong indicator that this won't change with the new system.

one of these reasons why i hated this gen. dumb ass boring and pointless.

I used to say that. That was before I knew that Crysis is an open world game, basically.

Is that the new "No More Heroes" game "No Heroes Left"?

That's Zynga's next game on the face books.

Is wii-U gonna have achievements?

Yes, but not mandatory. We don't know how they'll be integrated, though.

Also, Scribble is confirmed for digital release on launch as well right?

Actually, no, I don't think it it has. So far only first party titles have been confirmed for day 1 download.

El Capitan Todd
This will be a launch conf, they'll reveal info about price and date, about SKU and packaging, and will reveal more info on OS, Miiverse, online, data sharing from the Wii, and will show more footage about launch titles (launch window, I think)
So, if someone is disappointed or not interested in what we can actually get for the first months, nothing will change on September 13th (also if I think thy can reveal at least of couple well-rumored third party titles from western company).

I think that the only "hope" we can have about something that can change the perception of the actual lineup (even if this aspect will not affect directly the western launch window lineup) is related to the Japanese presentation (pre TGS conf or Nintendo Direct, September or October...we don't know, due to misteryous Iwata's tweet), that could reveal something more about Japanese support.

Iwata: "Hello, Nintendo fans. Today I am happy to announce Wii U will launch in period between September 13th 2012 and end of year, at price decided by retailers. Here is new footage of Nintendoland. I am also happy to announce Capcom will be supporting the Wii U with new Resident Evil game, named ZombieZ Party. We know our fans are looking for hardcore games, and like the GoldenEye game, so EA and Activision have come together to port Tomorrow Never Dies to the Wii U. Now we close with footage of new game, Panorama View. I hope this answer all your questions, thank you and goodbye."

I just hope, gamewise, that they'd announce a game what would make me buy the system day-1, at the moment nothing that's been announced interests me. I am keeping my hopes low and know I will most likely be in for a disappointment.

I'm scared how close to being true this probably is.

Thanks for the laugh.

Couldn't we then consider it to be ~7750, since it's slightly better than a 4850, but has all the modern bells and whistles?

.

This story from june 2011,
over a year ago says Wii U's GPU is based on a Radeon R770 GPU but heavily customised.

Developers told Kotaku that you need DX9 performance but DX11 shader capabilities for Star wars 1313, Samaritan graphics and "They consider the Wii U close to that DX9-performance/DX11-capabilities combo but possibly hampered by its CPU"

It appears Retro hired a level designer with rather extensive experience in first person shooters - (lead) level designer for Black Ops, Quake Arena, Wolfenstein, CoD3, AvP2, No One Lives Forever, Quake 2 Reckoning, Redneck Rampage...

Hopefully it's Metroid Prime 4 or something not totally generic.

Sorry, but did you actually play Crysis? It's one of the better and more playful shooters this generation that executes gameplay diversity very well within the genre. That, and you're not on training wheels the whole time.

How long ago is this? Because news like this coming in now leads me to believe the game isn't anywhere near finished, and thus we won't be seeing it in a few days time.

Oh boy an FPS!!

I assume retro does have several projects going though. Believe, dammit!

Yea-no. Or maybe... depends.
He joined very recently. Mere weeks ago, from what I can tell.

Hm, interesting. Is it normal for developers to join later in a games development cycle, or is this a sign that they're just getting things off the ground?

It's just confusing me seeing as there was a bunch of hiring done earlier in the year, suggesting this game's been in development for quite a while. This is why I hoped it'd be nearing completion by now.

Perhaps he's just a late addition to the team?

I'm pretty torn on how far Retro might be with any Wii U title. Simple math says DKCR in 2010, and ~3 years dev time, gives them a window of late 2013 / early 2014 for their next big game. But the studio's history is a bit rocky. I figure while one portion of the staff was busy with Mario Kart 7, another chunk were working on prototypes for their next game to see what to move forward with. I figure that's all set in stone now and has been for awhile, but the staffing up of pretty essential personnel over the last ~12 months would imply to me that the project is still some ways away.

If indeed Retro were supposed to show something at E3 2012, that was pulled, that something might have just been a CGI teaser or the like for a project 12+ months away. Hence Nintendo's reason to pull it, and wait until a later date.

Studios are always hiring. He may have been hired to work on a existing project late in development, or early in development, or in an effort to expand into new projects. We'll never know.

These are some big names

Metroid Prime 4 seems to be the project they are working on - I expect it to be more epic in scale though, space combat and stuff.

Or maybe they are really working on that rumored hardcore IP!

Pretty much what I was trying to say. Perhaps they've been playing with ideas and seeing what will work for quite a while, and thus have only just started genuine development. If this is the case, it may be that the project has changed a lot in the past 12 months. It may have started as prime 4, and slowly evolved into what it may be today.

Retro also hired or contracted three former Vigil artists (two character artists and one concept artist) and a former Mythic and Bioware engineer who worked on MMOs (The Old Republic and Warhammer Online). That was all just in the last three or four months.

Metroid Prime 4 would be a perfect game to show off the Wii U's power. I mean even if the Wii U isn't that powerful, just to see a current-gen Metroid game would be impressive.
