This show would be better if Pelican-Chitose showed up more.

Only ten episodes into the second season before we have an episode near the quality of the first season, yay(?) And even then, there wasn't any really cool action to speak of. Just some defining "moments" that made the scenario/scene more tolerable.
Madoka's roundhouse kick to the smug blue guy's face being the big one. And I probably shouldn't have been as happy as I was watching Villa-guy getting mecha-crushed. Both of the kings stories are pretty boring at this point.
Actually, is this the first time we've seen the Vox's in combat this season? Awful. Next episode looks eventful/climactic though. Hopefully it's not as cut and dry as I expect it to be.

Element Hunters 01-04:

Some AnimeGAFfers will appreciate the fact that the characters in this series have colored eyelashes a la Himari in Penguindrum and Ichiko in Binbougami ga!.

That'll be just me then! Also, that new sister/brother show with the brain-damage moe girls in it has the same effect. That's four shows now!

This opening stretch is great!

The one word to describe this episode is: lively!

Yuno running to exams going right into the upbeat x365 opening that is vibrant and does a great job of giving the audience a peek at the characters' personalities (or re-establishing them for those returning to the series). The episode itself goes into transitioning between Yuno showing anxiousness towards her entrance exams and showing characters we are familiar with from before. (The Principal still finding new ways to "weird out" Oyasan in his methods of saying "thank you", goofy Yoshinoya and so on).

Speaking of the transitions, this episode seems to also transition into proverbs and adages that are relevant to the scene at hand. These edits were very clean. It's unfortunate that not all episodes share the tidy cuts that this episode displayed.

Freshman Miyako

The character animation is improved from the norm (though I doubt it's here to stay). Heck, even the cookie cutter "Boy/Girl" figures move in this episode! For the main cast, eyebrows raise, tongues stick out, arm movements flow and Miyako's eating even receives a fluid sense of vigor. These touches stand out considerably when reflecting on past episodes (even with the 3rd season in mind). However, actions are animated "per usual" as the episode goes on.

As for Yuno and Miyako's first bonding
along with the birth of the nickname "Yunocchi"
, well...

ibzN2DXaXeskxM.gif

a beautiful representation of Miyako's extroverted and friendly personality bursting through the front gates of Yuno's isolated space.

This is without a doubt one of my favorite episodes of Hidamari Sketch yet (if not, my favorite). It reintroduces that characters while effectively utilizing the art style of the previous season. However, the techniques used in this episode are done with a deliberate execution that presents itself more akin to an appealing, yet simple work of art rather than a blatant "budget show." The animation used for most of the episode works well in standing apart from other episodes (though it's bittersweet in that I don't know when I'll see more of it down the line.) A very enjoyable experience that has me prepared to engage in the many interactions from the girls at Hidamari.

why did you feel it necessary to tell me that? I'm obligated to watch at least one episode now. Damn it all.

Also, more Element Hunters eyelash goodness:

You must've loved Jormungand, then.

I'm disappointed in myself for forgetting about Koko. I really dug the white skin + white hair thing she had going on anyway, even without the eyelashes.

Headliners dedicated to lil' ol' me?

Feels like Christmas!

You're welcome. It would have been neat though if you had put a headline in your own post here.

I like Chitanda. she can be cute, if not overbearing, but I got over the whole "ooh pretty eyes" thing quickly. They are pretty unsettling after a while. I think they overdid it.

I like Chitanda too. Personally I still don't really mind the eyes detail. Also...

ChitandaXIrisu as OTP!

I actually thought it was pretty interesting how pissed off she got in the last episode. That was an unexpected character trait, but I guess that was the Japanese obsession with always following the proper protocols rearing its head, lol.

The same for me too. Honestly that caught me a little off guard as well as it was in such contrast to her introduction in the film arc where she seemed more the genki character type. Although maybe her actions in the cultural festival arc were somewhat of a foreshadowing of that personality type.

Yay Nafe brought back goddess Minako!

ただいま!

Well, I was thinking about you when I posted that.

Man that sounds creepier than I intend...

Hmm, the start of a new AnimeGaf pairing? We do seem to have the same favorite characters on different shows... I think anyway.

Haha,no, I know what you meant. I'm always up for a good dead eyes pic.

That's actually pretty cool and I'm a sucker for interesting tidbits like that so thanks!

Ok, that's great. :)
Being a big fan of Sailor Moon I'll probably have more for you in the future then. Actually, I can tell you right now that the next episode, episode 21, is one of the Ikuhara directed episode.

Bunch of anime appeared at my local "used" shop. Managed to snatch up the complete set of tatami galaxy on DVD for $12!!

They also have the complete set of paranoia agent ($25) and cowboy bebop remixed ($40). Might pick up paranoia agent next week if it isn't sold by then.

Some good purchases! Tatami Galaxy for $12 is one of the greatest steals ever.

K-ON!! 02

I honestly don't know what the point to this episode was. Only thing I took out of this was the reminder that Sawa-chan is a really pretty lady.

And I legitimately feel bad for Azunyan. The other girls know that she wants a younger classmate so she can keep the club going...
so they buy her a TURTLE?!?
At least shes a good sport about the whole thing but man the other girls are big giant bullies.

I had a moment today at the day job where my students were writing 5 sentence "essays" about their summer vacation.

One girl wrote that she saw The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki and that she cried.

We shared a moment and proceeded to high five in the middle of class.

Being Yui's friend doesn't seem like the most lucky thing.
Didn't know Koda Kumi did the Opening for this. I like the song, but the opening itself is one of the laziest jobs around.

[Gunslinger Girl] - 10

Well that escalated quickly.

It was pretty clear from the first time we saw the crime scene that Elsa had killed Lauro and then herself. Lauro never took the time to fully understand his charge and this error, in the end, was fatal.

True, there could be some other explanation for their deaths but the fact that they occurred off-screen gives you a pretty clear indication about what happened to them. If they were killed in some gunfight than the show would be perfectly happy to show us that event occurring onscreen, there have been plenty of action scenes in the show so far. The fact that we don't see it happen helps to point us in the direction of a murder/suicide. I thought it was pretty ballsy that, at no time during the episode did they actually 'flashback' to th event.

And what of the Social Welfare's Agencies reaction? They obviously moved to cover it up, for their own good. The fact that we got to see another agency investigate the SWA helps with the world building of the series as a whole.

Interestingly enough the fact that this case hasn't been completely sown up by the conclusion of the episode has made this one of the longest running story arcs in the entire series
.

There's lots and lots of other things to talk about, direction wise, but sadly I do not have the time. I never even touched on the fact that Guise has taken Henrietta on a romantic cruise.

Nothing says "romance" like
taking a girl on vacation to avoid the aftermath of two of her coworkers dying.
It's pretty great how they take this arc in an unexpected direction, and yet it also makes sense. It's also nice to have more characters who can function as untainted outsiders, because it allows them to explore in depth some of the really disturbing aspects of the agency that were only subtext before.

Have you watched the next episode yet?

I guess that's the horrible, unavoidable truth.

darkside vindicated.......or something.

What?

I don't even see the appeal of colored lashes honestly.

Do wish more shows used colored nails. The nail polish choices in Canaan was literally the best part of that show. NANA also used them to great effect.

Theres nothing special about the idea. Ive even drawn fanart with colored thick lashes before. It just makes characters cuter. Its SCIENCE.

They fought each other at the beginning of the season and they had space battles too. Not sure what he's talking about.
Their Vox's come to save them in space, but they don't fight with them. And if they do, it's extremely brief and insubstantial. Muginami and Lan fighting at the beginning wasn't bad, but if that's all we're talking about for this season, that's pretty bad.

Kokoro Connect 01

Now this is kind of an interesting idea. Yet another "club anime" which seems to be all the rage lately. except now the girls and guys are switching souls/bodies/whatever. Interesting idea. Could be hilarious. Im pretty intrigued by it. Also, the BGM is really unique for this kind of show. It kind of lends to the atmosphere of confusion. Good stuff. Will continue.

Let's not forget the best use of nail polish.

the POLISH of POWER

Was going to mention this too. Its the most blatant (best) example.

So what does it say about me if I liked Dead Leaves and Redline way more than this?

I was really feeling the movie up until the
volleyball finals
but shortly after that the "plot" starts spiraling out of control never to recover and nosedives into a hot mess that just keeps going and going and going...

This really has no reason at all to last as long as it does. I get the feeling that if it were at least some 40 minutes shorter I would've enjoyed it a lot more. Say what you will about Dead Leaves, but at least it has the good sense to not overstay its welcome.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Thomas Romain has worked in Satelight for ages now. There are quite a few European foreigners in their art department actually. It's interesting.

Romain was heavily involved in the production of Basquash!, wasn't he? Of course, if so that's also a very good reason for me to run in the opposite direction of anything he touches.

Huh. I guess I've never noticed because Satelight's works have always been so bland visually that I've had no desire to research them.

Yes, he created the original concept of Basquash! alongside Kawamori. He also created the Code Lyoko and Oban Star Racers series.
