Resident Evil 6 - Review Thread | Activist Reviews and the Hate Patrol Destroy Truth™

Where will the Resident Evil series go from here?:

-Total Reboot and go back to roots. (Less Action Heavy, more puzzles, more atmosphere, less ammo)

-Continue current direction into all out action game a la Gears of War and outsource to Western Dev

-Becomes a FPS. It could actually be interesting and scary like Zombi U if done right.

-Truly examine RE4 and do a repeat (Unlikely)

-Give it to Frictional Games (Amnesia: Dark Descent dev) and see what they can do with it

The gaming press just tells people what they think the public wants to hear.

I will give them credit. This actually makes me take back my claim that a big blockbuster can get slammed in the press in a widespread fashion. I can't think of a previous example.

I'm not happy RE6 is crap. But I am happy that the press is actually willing to call shit shit even if it is expensive glossy shit made by a major studio.

This is what these stupid dumbasses get. Always whining about how they aren't as great as the West and threw their own franchise under the bus. From Software is a Japanese dev that still has its balls intact. From Software devs should burn down Capcom's homes.

Please God. My dreams will come true. This co-op forced bullsh!t needs to stop here.

See, no one bought Revelations, and this is why we can't have nice things

Put that on a console DD store. A horror-themed action-adventure game on a portable isn't exactly the best platform one could choose especially when the series' history of sales being best on console is taken into account.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Hey guys, what's going on here?

I think Leon ruined the series. He was alright in RE4 but they tried to make him super badass to appease some fanboys and it totally ruined the direction of the game.

I wonder what they could do to take it even farther... (I'm setting you up here btw)

In Gamespot's video review I'm pretty sure I heard something along the lines of:

"in 5 minutes you may complete a QTE, run for 10 seconds, complete another QTE, kill something, run for 10 seconds, watch a cut scene, complete another QTE, then do nothing."

Wow. Ahhh well, there are plenty more games coming this year.

Reading through some reviews, I'm disappointed how even the negative ones failed to punctuate how much of an assbackwards failure the basic, fundamental control mechanics in this game are. I guess there's just all kinds of problems in this game, lolz. I saw you controlling a jet fighter in the IGN video review, what the fug?

the clarity in which you rendered this very plausible trailer is quite something

Honestly, I think it's a shame we never got a full flegged outing of the basic forumula the RE5 team experimented with in Lost in Nightmares.

This is what these stupid dumbasses get. Always whining about how they aren't as great as the West and threw their own franchise under the bus. From Software is a Japanese dev that still has its balls intact. From devs should burn down Capcom's homes.

*sigh*

Kill it for an entire generation. There is literally no one for them to go storyline wise. Right now, it's "the continuing adventures of...Chris/Leon/etc."

Should have killed it with RE5 after they did what they did to Wesker. He was the only real thread holding the seroes together at that point.

I think the movies is what really ruined the series. The films are so over the top and action oriented, and because they're so popular, Capcom is trying to match them. In a way.

And it worked. I watched Afterlife and they lifted an action scene straight out of RE5. The game and film series are exactly the same now.

Man, I checked in here this morning and the game was getting pretty high marks. Few hours later, checked twitter, came back here and boom! this thing is sinking.

It's frustrating to hear about this game's problems.

Since I haven't really followed the series since Code Veronica (which I both enjoyed and hated), I was only going to rent anyway, like I've done since RE4. I'm really looking forward to the meltdowns in here though.

As someone no longer invested in the series, having read these reviews and the demo impression thread, I'm curious what I'm going to think of this one.

Well, no exactly. I'm unable to understand the sensitiveness of the controls, sometimes seems sluggish, sometimes too much sensible.

Maybe if you made some effort to tweak the controls and try again, you'd have an opinion that is less extreme and less barely supported by your own experience with the game.

How is the game any different than RE6?
Is this a sincere question about Revelations? I take it you haven't played the game?

Revelations has multiple interweaving storylines like RE6, but the game switches between them at scripted points in the plot -- you can't play them separately, but rather go through them in the order the author intended. I think this works to Revelations' benefit: The pacing, variety, etc, all works well since it's all working along one path. The game alternates between extensive segments on the ship, which are dark and atmospheric and contain exploration, puzzle-solving and backtracking reminiscent of classic RE, and action-packed flashbacks or asides in other locations, which serve to keep things fresh. There is also a grand conspiracy spanning all plot threads that comes together nicely in the end, and the plot has an awesome "Dante's Inferno" theme, with passages from the text opening each chapter. The chapters are also bookmarked by recaps and previews, iirc, set to a heart-pumping theme song like a good TV show. It makes it hard to put the game down; you always want to see what happens next.

Beyond that, there are no QTEs that I can recall, so control over the game is never taken away. And with the exception of two turret sections (which were actually fun), all of the boss encounters are legit boss encounters, fought face-to-face (or face-to-knee -- some of these monsters are tall!) on the ground, forcing you to outmaneuver your opponent in multi-layered environments. There is great build-up to each boss, and all of the characters, creatures and concepts are thoughtfully integrated into the setting and plot. Revelations is just an immaculately crafted game, polished through and through. The music is the best in the series, the end-game is seriously haunting and ends on a terrific high note, and the characters, creatures and conspiracy are all great. And it's all powered by airtight controls and slick shooting mechanics where you disable limbs to setup melee attacks, all while being able to strafe out of the way of incoming attacks.

Oh, and Raid mode is an incredible multiplayer mode in RER. Picture addictive loot-driven co-op gameplay through dozens of missions ripped from the main game, with leveling up and new skins, perks and weapons to unlock. So good. At the end of the day, Revelations just has such a strong vision behind it, from the menus to the mood to the mechanics and progression. One of the best games in the series, second only to RE4, imo.

Some of those reviews are SERIOUSLY OUCH!
I didn't expect anything that bad.

In the years to come we'll probably see RE6 as the 'too far' moment in AAA development.
Its a shame they tried to go too big; if they concentrated focus on just one of those campaigns...it might have been alright.

Instead of following tried and tested methods of game development, they just threw stuff down, stealing from past RE games and other games - not fully understanding how they worked.

Least from what I can tell the level design looks decent outside of some issues, but thats for an RE game...we now have guns...they didn't take this into account much, a mix of far away enemies with guns (shooting down at traditional level design) or close up (playing as if the levels weren't designed for guns). It looked a complete unenjoyable mess.

Truth is that having that many people working on a game is unhealthy, I don't think they lacked talent - I just think it must have been near impossible to concentrate on the small things or manage different areas. The game was too big.

I did like this in destructoid though:
With Chris and Sherry, we have gunfire that knocks them to the ground with such laughable regularity that you'd be forgiven for thinking the drunken physics from Grand Theft Auto IV had made an unscheduled return.

A lot of good games are imperfect, unfortunately this game never concentrated on what would make it 'good' so in the end you end up with a mess of imperfections.

Just my thoughts. Not to say its wrong for anyone to really like this game.

When Capcom just tried to make great games they appealed to east and west but now when they're trying to make western games they can't get it right. I'm not even sure if RE can recover from this, two terribly reviewed titles in a franchise is enough to kills the IP. ORC sold well sure but the word of mouth wasn't good and that could affect RE6 sales seeing as how the reviews are comparable.

BTW Has Capcom said anything about the critical response yet?

I still don't see why people call REv a great game. It has all the problems 6 seems to have with it's bloated, inconsistant campaign, abhorrent writting and dialog, 'streamlined' gameplay, bad bosses, and some absolutely terrible pacing.

If anything, it was the biggest precursor to RE6.

But the controls, graphics, FOV, QTEs, and normal enemy encounters aren't awful like they are in the RE6 demo.

At least the whole ship section is very true to what the series used to stand for. You can explore the ship freely and the atmosphere is very tense. You should really try it out. Try to ignore the action sequences that get thrown in every hour or so though.
