Reggie expects Wii U’s killer app to be social networking

I like what Reggie is saying about maxing out production. Fingers crossed I can convert my Wii U tard (white) to Wii U master race (black) to match my black wii/wiimotes!

I agree with him. Miiverse does sound very neat and I think it does have a lot of potential. I think folks will be surprised at how engaging it is.

This is about making the WiiU a strong system, not taking down Facebook.
This is Nintendo's version of their online social interface/environment - Live is Mircosofts.

I think the Miiverse should be strong social wise and also a lot of fun.

But as a gamer I ofc hate socialising and just want to play dem gamez.
He posted on neogaf forums

But seriously, Reggie isn't wrong - online is basically been a hole in Wii, if that were stronger then there'd maybe have been some more third parties - even download only; with people using the Wii to play and socialise through games.

Mii will allow people to connect better/talk and discuss/share ideas/thoughts in a way that will take over from achievements (imo).

Its a big part of the system.

It'd help if they showed off their online implementation. It's ridiculous that they're launching in seven weeks and we don't know details still.

With that said, I wound up really enjoying StreetPass so if Mii-verse is anything close to that I'm sure I'll like it too.

vita having facebook and twitter was definitely a killer app. but since this social network has the whimsy i can see how it could be different

It might be a nice feature, but it's not a flagship feature. Nintendo, just make games. Just. Make. Games. (Read Zelda)

In a lot of cases, it's thoroughly earned.

Not really. I don't know how many times I've seen ZombiU = Red Steel when the ONLY similarity is Ubisoft and launching on a Nintendo system. Most of the time it's people complaining just for the sake of it or people like the OP who twist comments to make controversial threads.

He said A killer app. One among others. Somehow that translated to it being the Wii U's killer app....

That's a joke, right?

Sounds good, but then again, Wii Speak sounded like a neat idea too.

At least for me! Almost bought one!

Be glad you didn't because it was absolutely horrible. I can only think of three games it worked for (City Folk, Conduit, Monster Hunter Tri), and your words probably had a 75% percent success rate of actually getting picked up by the speaker, and a whopping 25% success rate of the person you are talking to exactly understanding what you were saying.

When people hook up and make babies, they are future gamers.

When people hook up and make babies they don't have time or money for video games anymore. Or a whole lot less for several years, at least.

If PS Home has proven anything it's that the only people who use this kind of social networking on their videogame console are scumbags and crazy people. And lots of furries.

Home and Miiverse are almost nothing alike though.

Question really is will it make any difference? You can access traditional social networking from any device, Miiverse is going to be a WiiU-only club (with an admittedly large install base eventually), will it really compete with currently existing social networking and digital media?

What I'm saying is I think kids would likely rather share their high scores and gamer cards on Facebook and their videos on YouTube than Miiverse only. Maybe there's some sort of integration coming... As a non-3DS gamer I can't see or experience anything another player has on StreetPass, so it's basically an irrelevant, "out of sight, out of mind" social experiment to anyone like me, and Miiverse looks to be the same for late WiiU adopters. Could be great, or it couls be just one more thing to update and keep track of.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I can see this happening. Bring on Social Miidia.

Come on, guys, you're reading too much into it, it's Reggie, he would try to hype the Sensor bar calibration screen if you gave him a chance.

You can say I'm lazy, because I just copy/paste the title of the original source :p

Yet they still haven't showed any of it.

Perfect marketing campaign, Nintendo. "We have the greatest online infrastructure and social networking features of them all! But you can't see it yet, just take our word for it!"

I think they're hiding it because once we realise their "not friend codes as we know it" means AzaK2341-6853-8975 well explode in rage.

Joking (maybe) aside, I do hope they can pull off a great gaming centric social network. Especially as they are allowing it to be integrated into games. Could be some really cool things done with this.

They are already doing community forums and game groups with Steam. I don't see the appeal of a Nintendo service that may not even match multiplayer features on Xbox Live or simple forum features of something like Steam.

Miiverse really is going to be Nintendo's next big thing. I can totally see this.

DOA unless that changes.

Let's hope the social networking is as awesome as the 3DS!

...but seriously, this needs major improvement. The social games were fun for like a week until you realize how much they suck without the new factor. Now I love the 3DS, but I hope the online features get a major overhaul after the release of the Wii U.

The appeal is that it's built into the games themselves on some level, and it's free, and it's the first thing you see when you turn the console on. You'll have to use it in some capacity. As long as the system sells, Miiverse will be a success.

Nintendo's going all in with this I believe. Miiverse is a platform in itself.

This is a common misunderstanding of an old E3 interview. All posts will be sent through a "bad word" filter, but there is no wait. after your message has been posted, it can be flagged (similar to YouTube), and then moderators while check those posts and delete them if need be.

Miiverse is built using web technology, it is not limited to WiiU.

That means you can access Miiverse through your cell phone with a web browse, on the 3DS, laptop, any device imaginable.

Miiverse is something that goes beyond WiiU.

*walks onto stage*

NINTENDO OF AMERICA PRESIDENT, REGGIE FIL-AIME

"We all know that you're waiting to see what Nintendo Wii U is about. Here at Nintendo, we're excited too. We've seen the potential that Wii U represents, and we believe that when you see it for yourself, you'll see that potential too. And one of the most crucial components of Wii U, and how that potential is realized, is this."

*holds up sensor bar*

"I'm happy to be the first to present: the Wii U Sensor Bar."

*dangles cable*

"And let me draw your attention first and foremost to this: the Wii U Sensor Bar Cable. Equipped with the Sensor Bar Cable, the Wii U Sensor Bar will plug in to every Wii U console, this holiday season. And with the Wii U Sensor Bar, you'll be able to experience, for yourself, in your own home, what it's like to choose whether to place the Wii U Sensor Bar above your television. Or below your television. It's up to you. Up? Down? Your needs are first and foremost with the Wii U Sensor Bar."

*unwraps cable, lets it drop to stage*

"How the Wii U Sensor Bar Cable achieves that, is with this six foot length. Ready for the HD world out of the box, able to be placed above," *raises sensor bar over head* "or below," *lowers sensor bar to belt buckle* "even the largest full HD television set in your family room or home theater."

*tucks Wii U sensor bar into inner jacket pocket, spreads hands* "The magic behind the versatility of the Wii U Sensor Bar is the Sensor Bar Configuration Menu accessible through the Wii U Console itself. This menu enables you to define, entirely for yourself, whether the Wii U Sensor Bar is situated above," *raises hand over head* "or below," *lowers hands, spreads them again* "and it's something we'll be showing more of in the coming months."

*takes sensor bar out of pocket again, holds it up* "The Wii U Sensor bar, and Sensor Bar Cable, will be available on November 18th, this holiday season, when Wii U arrives in stores nationwide."

Except there is no "approval time". As usual with Nintendo topics, it was nothing blown way out of proportion. If messages get flagged several times, they're automatically hidden and checked by a mod. That's it.
