No comment on how this is handled in Tempest, since I haven't seen the episode yet, but it is not unheard of for the viewpoint character of a story to differ from the character actually driving the plot. The Great Gatsby would be one example.

Yea it does happen but I'm not sure how I feel about it in the show yet. It's rather atypical and I'm wondering if the author did it to allow for more natural exposition or for a mystery aspect. I'll guess we'll see as it goes along.

There might be like, one person in this thread that can relate here, but...

Cluster Edge DVD review from ANN:

No ANN, no it would not be a stretch. At all.

lol

But, but... it's like Guy-HiME or something! Mostly something. Well, OK, I barely made it through the first episode, so thankfully remember naught about it...

You know, the little details and expanded character development moments and other incidental things littered throughout the first episode actually make the writing feel MUCH stronger than the manga. I wonder what it says when we have to face the reality where Mari Okada is more capable of telling this story than the original manga author.... >_<

Clearly Ando's influence as he steers the show into an original direction.

So this is like a moe fanservice mecha musume version of Small Soldiers or something?

Yeah, I think that's a good way of looking at it - with a little bit of Angelic Layer built in (although that's mostly because the designs remind me of the Angels).

Personally, knowing it's from the same studio and director as Infinite Stratos and glancing at the trailers is all I need to prejudge Busou Shinki, but your stance is reasonable, especially from the point of view of practicing Japanese.

I've never seen Infinite Stratos! That's a case where I absolutely pre-judged through knowing the premise. If I'd paid more attention to Busou Shinki then I probably would have skipped it entirely.

If anyone wants lunch with Yuasa but not Oshii, it looks like they've added another tier to the Kick-Heart kickstarter...

These are some expensive lunches. I don't think that more 'high-end' tiers are going to get them the extra boost they desire. What they could really do with is some visibility beyond the 'blogosphere', a space which is by and large populated by pirates.

Can't wait to see everyone's reactions to Tempest when it starts to get more confusing than Horizon.

I dunno, Horizon at least seems to follow some internal set of rules, as crazy and nonsensical as they may seem from the outside. You might not exactly understand what's going on, but there's the assurance that the characters probably do, at least.

Zetsuen (and the end of
the first part
) is like paying for a lapdance and then you spend three hours waiting in the room and at the end they toss in a porn DVD saying that the stripper already left. And the DVD turns out to be in Arabic or something.

You're doing a terrible job convincing people to get off the hype train.

That actually seems unlikely after watching episode 1. They're already putting a lot of effort into using future knowledge to change the way things are presented. The ways flashbacks are handled, reveals are handled, and how things are foreshadowed are much more natural than the manga's chapter. In fact, there are already hints all over the first episode about things which will occur later, but done in a way where people who never read the manga will probably not pick up until later on. If they continue to do this for every episode, by the time that happens, all the pieces will already be in place to explain it.

We're not hyping it though. If anyone has been paying attention, we're all just curious to see how good a director Ando is, and how capable he is of salvaging the awful manga.

Yeah, taking a closer look, it looks like they've added a bunch of tiers between the $1,000 and $10,000 ones which were there previously. Honestly, they could probably have done better by expanding the tiers more in the $100-$1000 range somehow.

I'm not really sure what more they could really do in terms of visibility, though. Where's really left that'd actually cover stuff like this that hasn't already reported on it?

Cajun forced overhype has ruined the show. Off to watch pyscho pass with duckroll
ヽ(´o｀；

I overhyped nothing. That was my reaction to a very cute show after a night with 3 more trucks breaking down and 8 fuel loads given back for day shift and finding out at 4:30 am that a driver on the schedule is not coming to work that morning. A typical clusterfuck day bookended by exactly the kind of anime show I needed to see. Bless you Kyo ani.

Kamisama Hajimemashita 01:

It had a cute flustered shoujo girl. It had youkai. It had youkai flustering a cute shoujo girl. That's enough for me.

This looks on the :cajun side of things too. Is this very old?

Chuunibyo 01

After all the hype about the OP causing seizures and nausea, it turned out to be surprisingly tame. Y'all need to man up, dawg.

This reminds me of Nodame Cantabile, probably because there aren't a lot of shows heavy on male-on-female slapstick.

Lemme guess what the moral of the story is gonna be:

"To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."-CS Lewis

Damned right. I can take care of myself. I can buy what I want and I have a full time job. I'm not giving up those childish things I love to do.

I glanced around the thread and didn't seem to see that anyone posted this yet: Funimation just listed, out of nowhere, a Blu-ray release of Panty & Stocking for December. Oh, and it has new extras that weren't on the DVD set. Best quote I've seen on the matter:
"And now Funi has ensured that anyone who wants a BD release will not purchase a DVD-only set. Good job!"

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK
I might just have to start a charity where I give my old DVD sets to anime fans in need because Im gonna have to double dip now. fuck you funimation.

You mean you don't like stuff like this?! Seriously, the ENTIRE show looks like this! Isn't it AWESOME?!?!?!

It looks like K was going for a very distinctive "film noir" effect similar to Minority Report. but what works in live action doesn't really work in anime.

I'll have to watch it, but I doubt I even remember enough from the early parts of the manga for it to affect my judgement in either direction. I can't imagine they'll cut out the bullshit mind game debate, and no amount of foreshadowing can make that better.

No, it really wasn't. Trust me. It was more like going for a terrible hipster music video effect. Which doesn't work in live action. And doesn't work here. :)

Furthering their noble goal of licensing everything, Sentai picks up To Love-Ru Darkness.

I thought we all knew they licensed this already. Rightstuf even had a placeholder for it.

Best Student Council - 26 [END]

Oh my god was this unbearable. And whoever marked this as yuri needs to be punched in the throat! The main character (Rando Rino) was annoying as hell and had no development to her character at all, the side characters were just as boring if not more so, and the story (a laughable one at that) tried so hard to establish connections with so many characters and their relationships that when they tried to piece everything together it turned into a clusterfuck of a mess. They made such an effort to hype up this "power" that
Kanade and Rino possess, only for it be some D-Tier telepathy
. Seriously? A major conglomerate is going batshit crazy over this?

Best Student Council is something we should be recommending juniors for their initiation, nothing else.

Uta Kata was next on my list, but due to someone's "persuasive" methods *cough* Envelope *cough* I'll be watching this instead:

I heard this was terrible, but maybe the guarantee of yuri will save me.

Kannazuki no miko has guaranteed yuri. I think if you can deal with the awful story and stupidity of this show, the yuri will make you particularly happy.

Kind of makes me afraid to get A Certain Magical Index on dvd this holiday. Though Ive been waiting for so long that I dont think I can wait anymore.

I know. I dont know if I should wait for guranteed bluRay releases anymore or snap up the DVD sets of shows before they disappear like the Oreimo one. Im so fucking pissed off about this. I really want a bluray only collection from this point on.

Well, unfortunately, I think they need to reach a broader audience through less niche outlets. Easier said than done, right? I have no idea how you'd do that, but I'm surprised the someone from I.G. doesn't know someone, somewhere who can lift their profile a little. Apparently not.

Adding in more tiers for the super-hardcore is fine but it's not going to carry them far enough. In a way it's kind of emblematic of the problem with those aspects of the industry that only cater to the most die-hard fans. There are probably fans of 'experimental' films who have never heard of Yuasa's work but might like him if they were ever exposed. The lack of any kind of Western release is obviously the biggest roadblock to that ever happening.

What do you think this broader audience will think when they actually click on the Kickstarter and see the art?

Sorry, I was still adding content to that post after I submitted it. I don't think Yuasa's work will ever have a wide appeal but it would have the potential to reach a wider 'art crowd' audience if it ever got show in any film festivals etc.

God, how many episodes did I get through? I think I made it through more than one. Man, it was bad. I think we were hoping it would be Guy-HiME.

It says something that the Wikipedia episode synopses for Cluster Edge are completely incomprehensible. I think it would have indeed taken total linguistic failure for me to have enjoyed Cluster Edge.

As with so many fujoshi shows, its main failing was being incredibly boring.

US release, you mean - Tatami Galaxy at least did make it out in the UK.

I just realized that even if K is one cour, that means it's going to be twice as long as the entire Mardock Scramble trilogy.

akane? Is that you?

Busou Shinki 1

Tiny moe mecha girls do moe things while their hideously drawn high-school age "master" is at school. This week - they unpack, put on maid dresses, and then try and shoot each other because of a letter flying out the window!

The OP - and parts of the episode - have little girls flying around in CG going pew pew at each other. The episode itself has one of them squirt herself with milk before complaining that her breasts are too big to fit in a maid costume. I think you can tell if this show is going to appeal to you!

It does have a hamster, though. The hamster sees everything. I wonder if it, too, thinks that "Master" is drawn really weirdly?

I might check this out, but is it too similar to Strike witches? I didnt like Strike witches.

Holy shit. I thought you were exaggerating. I went to check the entry, and the first sentence made sense. After that, it's almost as if someone who doesn't really know English decided to edit more details in, and it no longer made any sense.

I'm not saying it wasn't highly predictable, but I don't remember seeing anything confirming this before, including that placeholder. Sorry if I offended anyone by posting this news.

Nobody is offended lol. Im just 100%^ sure I saw news of it being picked up before.
I even looked for it on rightstuf's site and found a pictureless/informationless placeholder entry. Im sure it will be filled in pretty quickly now though.

Glad that Gintama is back. First episode didn't disappoint. There's not really much to say apart from it's Gintama and it's funny. If you're not watching it, watch it.

K ep 1
tumblr_mbe0918c5R1qjricxo1_500.gif

Alright first episode. I think its a slow start though with a nice peek at the start of possibly big things to come and a good taste of the expanse of character abilities. Mikoto is impressive as well as Ichigan (Was that his name?) abilities. Favorite character thus far is the skater, Yata, Yashiro is also alright for our main character, and then Izumo, oh and Mikoto, actually.

Character design and soundtrack is a huge highlight, especially the music. I think there is nary a bad song in it and it sounds quite modern and, well cool (dont know how else to describe it).

The greenish filter is an interesting choice as well as the occasional brownish scene that clips in for a few moments at times. Stylish for the landscapes but I hope they tone it down a bit.

Favorite Part:
When Ichigan and Izumo are doing their skirmish and he deflects the fire with his katana, as well as grabbing everyone with the blue arms, and then even the entire landscape making it ripple as he flees
.

I think the cast is on the larger side, so hopefully they do give each character adequete time on screen.

Even Australia got it... I'd take their Trapeze release too. Fucking land of the free.

Well, in actuality the UK just got the release because Australia got it. Confusingly, our big anime distributor, Manga, picks up stuff that other people already do the leg work on (Kaze in France, Madman in Australia). We're just scrimping off their success.

Although it was Beez that put out Tatami Galaxy just before Bandai Japan shuttered them, rather than Manga...
