Halo |OT10| The Calm Before The Storm

Yeah, Mixcraft is my go-to DAW with a buttload of VST plug-ins. What did you use for your cellos/brass? I noticed a few were just pitch-shifted versions of the original samples (which is a very clever trick, might I add), but the ones in the beginning of the song definitely did not sound like the stems.

The cellos in the beginning were actually a free Kontakt 5 library. A guy on the KVR Audio forums just sampled his own cello and with some help, got a nice legato script for Kontakt. It's free, small, and sounds beautiful and natural with reverb.

I didn't use any other orchestral libraries in this. But when I write my originals , which are mostly orchestral soundtrack style, I use EastWest Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Silver, the VSL samples that come with Kontakt, and the light version of Miroslav Philharmonik. All that coupled with various freebies and smaller libraries I've collected.

I'm glad you noticed that I pitch shifted the orchestra near the end. Gotta love a good key change.

Good games everyone.

Hey all.
I know I'm just a no-name junior who never posts (unless I see a chance to talk about music), but I made a remix for the contest and submitted it.

So for the Halo 4 Remix Contest, sai-kun and I have been collaborating a little bit. We just got done with some stuff today, I'd love to hear what you guys think!

You can listen to the current version of the mix here.

Comments and criticism are welcome so that we can try and get this as refined as possible before getting it submitted.

i have no idea what i am doing for this remix

http://soundcloud.com/dopeyfish/wtfamidoing

seriously

besides the need of fixing every 4th bar

i made this for frankie because he likes piano

I really enjoyed these.

Oh, nice! I'll have to look for it. I use EWQLSO Gold, Symphonic Choirs and Ra among a few other Kontakt plugins (like Vintage Organs and Best Service Accordions) as well as Zebra2, which is a wonderful synth plugin even in trial stage. You can use it for as long as you want but after 10 minutes everything sounds messed up because the note progression changes from whatever it was to:
C - E - B - R* - A with R being a random note. Bonus points because there are a lot of synths available for use in it for free around the web.

And yeah, it was subtle, but definitely a nice way to use the samples without being too overdone.

EWQLSO is soooo ugggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh (SHAME EDIT: I was thinking of edirol, not east west oops)

the samples are so junk* **

*speaking from experience dating back 8 years ago (i think)

** VSL ftw.

I really enjoyed these.

i am really glad every 4th bar didn't want you to stab your ears (because I -had- to)

I've been using Mixcraft's free trial for ages now but up until Friday everything was great. Ever since I downloaded the last update I am getting upwards of a second of input lag. Playback is all fine and dandy but any input is taking forever to play. I checked the audio settings and reduced the sampling and stuff so the input lag was on double digits but that didn't do anything. I thought it might have been my keyboard's fault perhaps bt even using the musical typing (aka the alphabetical keyboard on my laptop) the same delays existed.

Completely soured my eperience as I just used to love jamming to myself with the built-in lead sounds. I used to have a bit of a delay but it was easy to tune out of.

Why did Bungie stop making interactive maps? Why hasn't 343i tried to implement a couple of them. I miss terminal. also miss opening the gate for Zanzibar. It really created a different dimension to the maps.

The only thing that worries me about the maps is the environmental/ambient noise on the maps. The DLC for Reach has a lot of ambient noise and it can be really distracting when you're playing with headphones.

I'm jealous of your libraries! College kills my spending money nowadays. So I've been trying to be a master of manipulating free libraries and what-not to get the most out of what I have. Kontakt was my biggest purchase.

I've played with Zebralette, the free version. It's pretty complex. I'm not that good with synthesis. I only really have the basics down. Waveforms, filters, LFO's... that kind of stuff.

Oh, and here's that cello library. Have fun with it!

Speaking of Murder Miners, TDM is actually really nice on it now.
Yeah it is a ton better now. I did some 2v2 custom games last night.

Yes it was. I loved that and the gates on High Ground and Zanzibar/Last Resort, and how they instantly changed the way the map played. They set up mini objectives to pursue or defend.
Totally forgot about the gate on High Ground. One other thing I remember that is not so interactive as it is dynamic but that bridge in Colossus that would disappear depending on the gametype was really cool.

I'm definitely a composer and not a producer. But I'd appreciate some of you checking it out and maybe giving it some soundcloud lovin' for the contest. I hope y'all like it!

PS: Soundcloud compression makes me sad when listening to the high frequencies =/

PPS: Warning, contains minor wubs.
This should be on the remix album. Great job.

It was $3. It plays really well and there are a bunch of remade halo maps for it. It is popular because of that more than the price.

The one way teleporter on relic was genius.

Maybe I'll give it a download when I get back to school. I need something fresh to keep me occupied from now until Election Day.

Yeah, that was great. IIRC it was there for Slayer and missing for objectives. Really great detail. Even things like the conveyer belt on Colossus and Elongation were nice interactive elements.

I'm kind of baffled why they, and now 343, moved away from these kinds of maps.

I can only imagine that it was a network thing that caused them to stop making dynamic maps like that. When games got laggy in Halo 2 you'd end up with an invisible train, or a gate that was only open for 3 people in the match, or a Zanzibar bridge that refused to fall over. I'm not sure if that was still an issue in Halo 3, since I don't remember any specific instances of that kind of thing.

I love those elements though. I've always wanted lightbridge switches in a multiplayer map, hopefully we get one down the line.

Yeah! I hadn't really thought about it much until I played nillapuddin's Forge remake on Reach a few weeks back. It's probably my favorite example.

Oh yeah, and I had NO IDEA Longshore had a secret tunnel path in Objective until a few weeks ago, too.

If you played Neutral Flag it wasn't there. My friends and I used to play Neutral Flag where the flag spawns at the top of the lift and set the starting weapon to snipers. Those games would get crazy.

I remember in some SUPER DUPER laggy games in Halo 3 on High Ground there would be problems with the gate, I think I only experienced it once, and it might have even been in a game where the other team was cheating.

I like how the buttons could change how the way the map played in an instant.

Containment objective changed the way you assaulted the bases when the bridges went down and when Relic's teleporter was active the defending team had to switch up its defenses.

I wouldn't think that would be an issue anymore.

What?

The bridges on Containment were awesome. In the original version of the map there was supposed to be a shield door that you could lower around the objective point. I'll try to find a picture.

Or a Zanzibar bridge that fell over 25+ times over and over and over again...

I don't recall playing Neutral Flag on it, didn't know that. I think it was missing for two sided games like CTF so the rest of the map got used, rather than a direct shortcut between bases.

It's been so long since I played on it, though.

Damn man, my MLG controller is on the fritz right now. It's like all choppy and shit when I turn. As if the framerate was dropping. Ughhhh

Try removing and replacing the thumbsticks. Or swapping them. That happened to one of mine and that fixed the problem.

I really like the idea behind stuff like the Zanzibar gate/High Ground gate, that you can do this thing that will make accomplishing your task way easier, so it makes it into a two stage game in a way, but in practice, I was never really a fan. But maybe you can put that down to me just not liking asymmetrical objective gametypes.

This along with other interactive elements need to return as it brings life to the maps. Rushing that button to open the gates on High Ground and Zanzibar - soo exciting to defend against for a few mins too! Also has a risk/reward if you're alone in the base and think you might be able to cap a flag or plant a bomb* alone.

*better be a gametype whether in Assault or OB

I loved grabbing invis and sneaking into the base on last resort to open the gates. Loved it. I was a master at it.

Self quote. Fyrewulff, you would find this interesting:

Yeah, it was missing in all objective games. I was just saying that Neutral Flag Snipers was a ton of fun because people would just snipe across the U; grabbing the flag was incredibly difficult.

Why does everyone say that the LR has a slower RoF than the BR?

I've done a frame count multiple times and using various videos and I always end up with the exact same RoF.

You're kash117? I had no idea! I asked about the To Galaxy (Halo 4 vidoc) Mixcraft files a while back! Small world.

Haha Oh wow! Did I send you the files? I hope I didn't forget to. I got a lot of messages after posting that video.

That's part of the reason I chose To Galaxy for the contest. I was already very familiar with the music.

Also, did you see my last response to you? I put a link to that free cello library in it.

I doubt it, but it would be nice if forge could be used to remedy that problem. I hope 343 looks into it for DLC or at least Halo 5. I think it would work even better with their gametype dominion if they created an interactive one.
