lol - that sounds like the voice of experience talking. :)

(Solid advice, in any case!)

when this building was first shown, from the outside, i thought the forge lightng was insane, as you can see how that yellowish interior lighting spills out onto the surface outside. but yeah, then he hit "delete everything" and it was still there. :(

Haha yeah, I was thinking the same.

I still think that they should have went back to Sandbox style pieces for regular forge though. From the footage seen today the pieces still seem jarring, IMO.

Its not really. You have to get use to them but they do increase your accuracy. And why wouldn't they the logic behind it is pretty simple. You get a more finite control because of the larger area of movement. Its like trying to to do anything with really small parts you almost always need a specific tool to use because human hands are...dumb.

My CoD accuracy went up 2% or so and that was after I had fired like a million something shots, so it slowly went up and up from the day I put them on.

I can't even really use normal controllers anymore.

It's all in your head too.

I took a good look at many of the pieces in the video and quite a few of the older pieces have been changed/updated to make this less of a problem. Many of the Reach Forerunner pieces that had inclines are now updated to fit with the new human-style of stairs with wider/more standard size walkways. The tall-tower piece for example:

Untitled_2.gif

I saw quite a few more in addition to this. I think many of the modularity proportions are fixed/more standard.

Your image will not load for me, but this is the moment in the video which prompted that part of my post.

At the time, the magnet feature was being demoed, showing how parts snap together more easily. Now perhaps they were showcasing parts that are incompatible. But I always struggled to use the ramp/platform piece that is facing away from camera. And it appears from this moment that it's still going to not fit, at least with these kinds of ramps.

My post was based on one quick viewing this morning while I prepped for work. I'll be watching it again shortly, hoping to spot what you have mentioned.

Installing Dishonored. I know absolutely nothing about the game, aside from it having a steampunk aesthetic and some supernatural shit. I wish I could go into Halo 4 without knowing so much about it, but ah well, the hype train is fun.

I am in the same boat! The last time this happened for me was the first Bioshock. It is very refreshing and I am loving it!

Anyone notice that when you highlight a forge piece it turns different colors like red, yellow, green etc.

Is there a reason why when they are highlighted they can be different colors and not just one universal color all the time?

Or is 343 just having fun teasing us with the fact we are that close to having color palettes???
yet so far

Green is highlighted.

Yellow is selected but unlocked.

Red is selected and locked.

That's my understanding anyway.

Did you even watch the video?

Red = Locked
Green = Selected
Yellow = Selectable

Or something like that.

I was prompted to investigate by the same moment that prompted your post.

Here is the pic re-upped and recut to show more:

Notice how they modifyed a lot of the old Reach pieces and how well they fit together?
The Tower-Tall example stood out to me because the incline is now wider to fit the other pieces. (Also, it's become a staircase, I wonder if you can bounce nades up those stairs?)

But again, there are other examples I noticed of old pieces being slightly updated in proportion as well as the many new pieces they added that appear to fit nicely.

Moving this up here since I edited it:

It's not that technical lol

LOL, Thats the problem! :D

I am used to just explaining it with 3D art & rendering jargon, I got to go back and leave stuff out or explain it better.
Beyond3D is where you get technical, I tried posting somewhat technical stuff on GAF before that I think just flew by a lot of people.

^(Actually, I could have replaced that whole post with just the sentence, "Blinn's Law, LOLOLOL." and that would have had more of an effect; at least it would piss off Juices!)

Lighting is just an interesting subject that, much like everything in realtime 3D, varies wildly from engine to engine, especially recently.
The thing is, the WYSIWYG, 'painting with light' workflow I described is only really become feasible recently with deferred renderers,
so compared to the typical static/baked lighting workflow, this is rather new/not-so-obvious compared to how it was done in the not-too-distant past.
(and is actually still done today to a large degree.)
This is more about explaining a particular aspect of game art workflow that any forger would grasp.
(Lol, now I think I know how BSangel must feel every wednesday.)
Also, getting example pics of my own as well as ones I shot from SDKs takes time.

I think they actually said that no forge maps would be in matchmaking initially... Or maybe I'm making that up.

I believe they said they will have a community playlist and eventually they might put the more favored maps into their playlists...

So basically the same thing as Reach. They'll start a half assed community playlist then start throwing them into BTB and Slayer playlists.

I think it was one of the questions answered in a weekly update where they answered a bunch of questions.

Anyone?

Also Computron it wouldnt piss me off, I love laws!

They've somehow made the forge pallet worse than in Reach. A tip of the hat, I suppose.

Disclaimer - These pictures are all that I have seen, perhaps other pictures/videos could convince me otherwise.

an unlimited budget, two development teams, and 3 years couldn't get those pesky colors into forge.

good enough though imo

What's hilarious about the community playlist is that the population hovered around 100 from the get go, yet the trash was still forced into the regular playlists, lulz.

I wouldn't be sad if Forge was axed completely, but that video was obviously a huge step up over Reach visually, even if the pieces are still one color.

that playlist was carefully catered by elite community cartographers. how dare you.

I expected you to say something along the lines of, "Blinn's Law ain't even true, we don't even reach 30fps nowadays."

Juices Law; "As technology advances, the rendering time becomes even shittier."

:p

The good thing is that Forge is getting better. It is far from Far Cry but it is much better than Reach.

Some Forge maps can be good. The only "worry" that I have is the framerate.

Apparently not. :/

I mean if they could make the pieces change color like that while editing... One would think that it can't be too hard to give us an option to change the color of individual forge pieces. Then again I know very little about game developing.

I can do without colors although it would be really, really, really sweet. Framerate is a bigger problem that directly affects gameplay

lol no.. no it wasn't

This also isn't true.

However, I'm actually agreeing with your sentiments on Forge maps in core playlists. So there's that.

A simple color wheel/palette swap option is all I ask for.

I don't know much about coding, but that doesn't seem like it'd be difficult at all.

Although who knows, maybe you can customize colors, and we just don't know it yet.

I wish we could vote/nominate cartographers for H4.

This also isn't true.

What part? Wasn't the whole point of the community playlist to test out maps & let the cream rise to the top? The population was pathetic from its inception and thus there were no testing grounds for maps to go through, thus resulting in hilariously bad maps getting into the regular playlists.

I would state the obvious that the population sucked because the number of people who want Forge maps in their MM experience is minimal, but I guess you could blame it on poor awareness of what the playlist was.

Great post all the way through - this was the part that worries me the most. With the new "dynamic lighting" if you build any interior spaces it looks like these screen shots - no shadows, bright ass spartans, running around with nothing to judge depth perception.

Again, great post.

Yeah I worried about that when he made the interior bits and ran around with the DMR and there was like no lighting change on the DMR. :S Those screens make me sad panda.
