PS2 production has finally come to an end [Up: Not official yet!]

gamefront.de has the same news. They refer to a deleted Japanese Twitter post. My German isn't good enough to understand it perfectly though so if somebody could check them.

I'd like to buy one last brand new one, where can you get them in England? Nowhere sells them now. Would consider an import if they are easily moddable? Although saying that, 90% of my PS2 library is Japanese anyway.

You could probably import from continental Europe easily. Shops in Poland still sells the SCPH-90004 model for around 400 PLN (~77 pounds) new.

Hmm yeah apparently it is from a now deleted tweet. Still seems fishy to me. You#d think that more people would pick up on something like that.

Other markets. An NES clone was the most popular console in Poland in mid-90s. I'd wager the actual NES might had been popular in third world territories/post-soviet republics for much longer than you could imagine.
I doubt it, because I imagine that the vast majority of those post-1994 systems in third-world/post-soviet countries were, as you say there, clones. I don't think they were actual hardware made, or licensed by, Nintendo. Everything I've heard says that the vast, vast majority of Famicom stuff outside of the US, Japan, and Western Europe was all clone/pirate systems and games... did Nintendo officially license much stuff there? I think they had a few here and there, in parts of Asia for instance, but most of it was clone stuff Nintendo had nothing to do with.

Same goes for PS2. Apart from yearly sports games releases there hadn't been an actual new game on PS2 for years, had there? Yet it's still selling decently in primary territories (EU, JP, NA) and I suppose it's profitable to continue production for the third world.
The PS2 was released in 2000, and still had a few games this year. That's 12 years -- only one year longer than the Famicom in Japan (1983-1994). Impressive length indeed, and of course it sold a lot more because each generation sells more than the last and the PS2 of course was incredibly successful, sure. But as it's a newer system Sony has done a lot more to sell it in lots of markets than people did back when the NES was out, so it's officially been released in more markets than any system ever or something, right? I don't think the NES and PS2 are directly comparable in that regard... though I don't know for certain, markets have expanded over time, companies try to release systems officially in more and more places, etc.

(To be clear, yeah, I doubt that PS2 production is done, unless they have some huge backlog of them and are stopping production for a while or something.)

Darn, I guess I should consider getting a replacement for my Japanese model sometime soon then. My old one still works great but it's over ten years old now and I don't want that to break down and all soon and I have no way to get a new one.

Here in South Africa most major retailers still sell them for +/- 70 pounds, usually with 1 or 2 games.

Nintendo DS numbers/year are far superior.

Edit. Sorry, didn't read the home console part.

Wii has sold 16 million/year.

4 or so more mill a year isn't really "far" superior. And much like the Wii, nintendos machines sales tend to jump off a cliff at the end of the cycle.

From 17.52 in FY10 to 5.10 at the end of FY11. So far in FY12 its at about a million.

PS2 from FY07 has been solid

FY07 13.7
FY08 7.9
FY09 7.3
FY10 6.4

Its a shame sony won't give individual numbers but it doesn't look like the NDS will dethrone the PS2.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Fucking hell that's very impressive. At this point I have to imagine all the revenue Sony earn from PS2 sales is 90% profit, it must be dirt cheap to produce.

Best console ever. A huge variety of genres, so many great high profile and niche titles... no matter what type of gamer you were, you could find something on the PS2.

Despite my feelings on the current PS iteration (and Sony), the PS2 has cemented its place in the pantheon of greats. Still have my fatty from 2002. From middle school to high school to college to now, even...it's one of the few things that's endured a good 50% of my life! Heck, this thing may become an heirloom.

This is not official! (yet)

Apparently, the source of this news comes from the Twitter account of a game shop in Japan, but the tweet no longer exists.

Some sites saved the tweet. Translated into English, it reads: "It appears that the PS2 hardware has finally been discontinued. People who want one should purchase it before stock runs out."

If someone has any other source, please chime in.

SCE has not said anything about discontinuations of the PS2 yet, although it's entirely possible that they will announce it soon.

Quoting for emphasis.

If there's any truth to it, it's most likely only for Japan.

Crazy. Really is the end of an era. What an amazing console though, every time I look at my PS2 collection it's hard to believe how many must-play games there are, as well as ports of older classics.

How many games actually exist for the PS2? It's library is rich and dense and totally has some of the best overall games in pretty much every genre.

I dont belive in this news. PES 2013 and FIFA 13 recently came out on PS2.

Madden 09 came out on XBOX three full years after MS stopped producing the hardware. With that said, this news wouldn't make sense considering how many PS2s Sony still manages to sell.

I really should get around to buying a slim.

So so so many great Japanese games, still working through just the JRPGs.

Also, doesnt the thing still sell even in Japan, given the developing countries and their growing middle-class, why on Earth would they be stopping production this early?
