GTA V GameInformer Discussion (11/8, 12PM EST)

Then they should have a camera or something so you can walk around in FPS view.
The city looks awesome up close and lets you appreciate Rockstar's fine work.

One thing that annoyed me about IV was the camera angles. Hard to appreciate everything and get a good view.

I am expecting almost a GTA 3 to SA kind of leap between IV and V. Actually more like a VC to SA leap.
It's a numbered sequel which says a lot.

Also most of the things we heard from GI were in the game a year ago. I'm sure they have a lot up their sleeve.

So IGN's week long GTA V marathon starts tomorrow... should we expect anything not already revealed via the Game Informer article do you think?

On an unrelated note, I just has the misfortune of stumbling upon gtaforums.com whilst searching for some info... is it just me or is that place kind of *special*?

Trailer 2 in < 3 days now, can't bloomin' wait!

GTA forums is filled with entitled whiners and immature assholes. There are probably less than 30 good posters there.

GTAForums is absolutely awesome. Complete lunatics, always have been. That forum hasn't changed in 8 years when I went to it around when San Andreas dropped. I loved when the city for GTA4 was a mystery, and every week you had a thread being like "I KNOW GTA4 WILL BE SET IN DEMOINES IOWA"

Considering 4 was on a whole new engine on new consoles and from a technical point of view was incredibly ambitious, I can almost see why the game was so low on content.

In that instance we should be thankful that GTA 5 isn't a next gen game because it looks like a game that will have a load of content since they don't have to learn new consoles or design a new engine. While it probably won't rival San Andreas there it should be 1000000 times better than 4, and in some ways it could be better than San Andreas if Free Roam includes all of the content. The only thing that would have made SA a better game is experiencing all it had to offer with friends.

It's just full of kids, not much different than many other forums with the same demographic, really.

I expect a small handful of new screens but that's about it (ShortList UK had that exclusive one they accidentally posted early).

They got the demo GI got so maybe a couple observant tidbits.

GTA V will beat San Andreas in many ways already, and not just in the visual or vehicle physics department.

That's why I love Neogaf, it's a melting pot of everyone but kids.

While it probably won't rival San Andreas

I think it has a good chance to rival SA for content. According to Rockstar, GTA V will be larger than SA. Unless the world is less dense, the area alone should dictate that.

Yeah the GTA4 to GTA5 scenario is a close parallel with the GTA games last generation. And the time gap between 4 and 5 coming out is actually longer than GTA 3 to SA. Of course RDR was released in between 4 and 5, but I think Rockstar has probably grown in size since the PS2 days.

GTA3's content was minuscule in comparison to SA. I don't think GTA V will dwarf IV quite as badly, but I don't think it's overoptimistic to think it will at least match SA's content.

I really like what I hear about racing. Despite the new and better vehicle physics in IV, the racing action took a major step back from SA IMO.

I was talking mostly about the ridiculous amount of side content and cool things which I don't feel like any sandbox game has been able to match, not just GTA itself.

Honestly what I hope GTA 5 has the most is San Andreas' mission design and mission diversity. Don't get me wrong I want a load of side content too, but what's most memorable about San Andreas to me is most of the 2nd half of the game's story. Stealing harriers, sneaking into area 51 and jetpacking out, chasing that fake rapper in a hovercraft. Fun stuff like that. It would be a shame if 5 makes all of these gameplay improvements over 4 but keeps the horrible and boring mission design from 4.

Another mission-related thing they need to fix is bringing back the unpredictability. No more chasing someone in 4 and not being able to kill them until you get to the specified point. I'm ok with that if used sparingly but it was used almost all of the time in 4.

I agree man. What I'm hoping for also is that you have the possibility this time to really play and finish missions the way you want to. Before GTA 4 hit the stores, it was said that this was possible but it really wasn't.

I would genuinely be shocked if the main mission variety in GTA V doesn't surpass GTA IV's. The fact that harriers and potentially submarines will have to be used in some missions is very telling, the action and insanity will probably reach fever pitch in V. Add in the fact that you can replay some missions from a different perspective and there already is an insane amount of content for GTA V.

As for side activities or minigames, that's the only department Rockstar has disappointed me in this gen. GTA San Andreas had a lot of mixed content but if you wanted to kill time doing something you can do plenty. But unlocking the Casinos and making millions in blackjack kills my interest in doing any side activity where I'll gain very little.

Free roaming outside missions sounds very unpredictable and exciting. For main missions I always wanted branching paths depending on if you complete or fail the mission.

GTAforums is fun. The people are weird as fuck and always complaining about something, but it's entertaining, and you get all the GTA news you could need between there and threads like this on GAF.

There's one guy on there that's been going on about "realistic steak" for about months now. Saw him post after the Game Informer reveal and it was like the first item in a thread about "things you still need to find out after reading Game Informer".

"We still don't know how realistic the steaks will be. No nice steaks, no buy." :lol

GTAForums cling onto relatively small features and magnify them as if the game revolves around them. They read about the really ambitious scale of the world and the new 3 character campaign and the first reaction of half the forum is "This isn't GTA. Rockstar are lazy and don't respect the fans because we can't go to the gym or get fat or buy a house". And half the signatures are either breasts or something like "GTAV WILL BE RELEASING MARCH 2013 - FACT!". I'm pretty sure the average

Yeah it sounds like GTA5 will be great! The only thing I'm worried about is console performance. (draw distance, FPS etc)

I was worried about that too. But the GI article had this interview with one of the designers and he said that the draw distance has improved greatly. Ofcourse the game won't be perfect, on a technical scale, but I am pretty confident that it will run great.

The character swapping does intrigue me with its potential but they still need to design crazy, fun and varied missions because otherwise switching from 1 who's driving and another who's doing nothing but shooting is fun at first but would get old fast unless there's some hook thrown in. Like instead of driving a getaway car there could be a mission where you're in a harrier battle and 1 person flies while the 2nd handles the harrier's weapons. Just a basic example but stuff like that would keep it somewhat fresh.

I'd imagine with a harrier there will be a mission where Michael or Franklin are in a ground vehicle and the goal is to get the vehicle from Downtown Los Santos to a desert town. Trevor will be in a harrier overhead to provide support. You can either drive and avoid danger while Trevor covers you or provide assistance as Trevor.

The diamond store heist in the first trailer will be interesting to see played out with character swapping.

They probably won't be designing a new engine for a long time. The RAGE engine hasn't really stretched its legs on these consoles. When Rockstar starts playing with a lot more RAM is likely where they're really gonna get crazy. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised to see a FULL San Andreas with 2013 Los Santos and updated versions of San Fierro and Las Venturas on a massive scale. Instead of putting them all in one game, they're making them separately and will "snap" all the pieces together in GTA: The San Andreas Chronicles on PS4 and Xbox Loopfinity in 2018. PC version sometime in 2019. Still shock and awe at no Wii Me announcement.

Wait....what was I talking about?

This is what i think it's gonna be but not in 2018 but rather 2015.
Two big dlcs/ expansions/standalone games + updated graphics on next gen(cheap features)

All dlc are planned early in the development and some aspects like the map could be already under development.

Also it will be cheap to rockstar to release a next gen patch to the game and re release it. New shaders, better physics, draw distance, lod , lighting, 1080p.

Where is everyone getting the idea that Rockstar is gonna put this game on next gen platforms too?

I have no clue honestly. Once GTA V is done and released Red Dead Redemption 2 will get a lot more effort from Rockstar and it'll be for next gen consoles. After that maybe another GTA, maybe another new series.

There was one guy on GTAForums who was excited about Franklin wearing shorts in one of the artworks....yep..

The only thing I like about that place is that when a new trailer drops, they will study it frame by frame with pictures. They are lunatics.

I often visit the mapping thread they have there. So much info in that topic that it almost reveals too much for me lol, but I can't stop going back to it.

GTA V character switch system in GTA IV.. A glimpse to what GTA V may offer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=flFLeS1hgng

I enjoyed that video! Maybe just to see all three protagonists working together on that insane shooting/driving spree. Very interesting- I do wonder if all the action will freeze as we switch characters. Like a radial menu and then select while everything pauses, or just a button to instantaneously switch out? Whoa, it sounds crazy to even think of.

What if we play as one character with multiple personality?

Haha, yes! Man, the gym thing. What the fuck.

Am I missing something? Why is a button tapping minigame at the gym so essential? I don't think it's possible for me to care less about something than I do about going to the gym in Grand Theft Auto. Or even things like customizing tattoos. Why is this so important to those guys? I don't get it.

I agree that is not crucial, though you can apply that reasoning to a lot of things.
Is changing clothes crucial? Not really, but i'd be pissed if it wasn't there.

Some things are just fun to do because they augment the sense of immersion, like the ability to sit on a chair or a bench (which still isn't there in GTA) in Skyrim.
50% of my enjoyment, in an open world game, is virtual tourism; being able to interact, even in a trivial way, with that world, is very important to my overall enjoyment.

I always tip my hat to peds in Red Dead Redemption, for example.

Tattoos also tap into (like clothing) the matter of self expression and creativity, you want your avatar to be a bit closer to you or your idea of character, either way.
Some people kept CJ with baggy pants and rapper style clothing, others went all Didier Sachs.
These things are not singularly vital, but in the big picture they make or brake a good open world game, imo.

This Dutch website Gamer.nl (that I never really follow or read) will put their preview up in about 5 minutes. I will put any new information here after reading all of it.

Ok, so here's some tidbits from the the Dutch website Gamer.nl GTA V preview:

- GTA V is 5 times bigger than the world of Red Dead Redemption, according to the author.

- Author was amazed and in awe when he saw Michael riding the bike for the first time. The game world is very detailed.

Other than this, not really any new info. But there are some great new screenshots! :)
