Wii U Press Previews

Gotta wait to the 30th, not bad for an AUS release but still :(

It's been a long time since i was hyped for anything gaming.

The closer the release of the console gets the more hyped I become.
And I have to wait more than two weeks still.

I also hope that Ninja Gaiden 3 will get better reviews than the PS360 versions. I really want that game.

Well, Jim Sterling seems to like the thing. In his recent Jimquisition video, he seems to think that Wii U's Gamepad is a gimmick done right with software that mostly doesn't reach into tech demo territory. It's an OK video if you like Jim's work, basically calling out developers for using control methods impractically just for the sake of it.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/6508-Touch-Waggle-Touch-Waggle-Swipe

He also says this on Destructoid in their article about Peter Molyneux's comments about the Wii U (after some really good rips at Molyneux, of course):

"Our full-on review of the Wii U is yet to come, but I have to say I'm already a far bigger believer in this tech than I ever was in motion control."

I reckon that should be pretty much a safe bet; speaking of which, today's the 13th of November already, so are we expecting first Ninja gaiden 3 reviews at any moment, aren't we?

IGN's review schedule states the review will be out today.

I'm assuming other places are allowed to have reviews up for it by today as well.

Just checked, IGN have moved them all to the 18th.

Yeah. Ninja Gaiden is today and New Super Mario Bros U and Nintendo Land are on the 15th. Everything is the 18th or simply doesn't have a date.

Edit: Beaten

I was hoping Mass Effect, Tekken, and Assassin's Creed 3 would have a few reviews out before launch. Especially AC3 given the issues the PS3/360 version have and the repeating that the Wii U version would be exactly the same. Such a risky buy at the moment when it was originally going to be one of the safest.

Anyone working in retail know when consoles start coming in? I preordered from Wal-Mart, and I'm curious to know when they will start setting consoles aside.

I wonder which WiiU multi-plat (and when) will get the first Digital Foundry face-off.

I guess they could just update current face-offs with the new WiiU "data". (let's say for ACIII, ME3, etc)

Would be interesting, anyways.

its probably going to be AC3 first, followed by ninja gaiden, then ME3 , whatever others are out, and Warriors orochi 3 last(one i'm actually interested in considering koei said there were problems originally)

Or maybe Black Ops II.

Isn't it basically the first -major- title, being released simultaneously on all 3 consoles?

Stealth update coming couple days before street date. My prediction: it'll still be missing a lot of features many suspected would be there on day 1 and it'll take them 6 months to roll it all out. Awesome!

This is what I am hoping for. It looks like Blops II could be the most graphically intensive game launching with the WiiU. It would be interesting to see a comparison.

That will be the real test. Wii U looks like a modest upgrade over the 360 and PS3 on paper, but wouldn't it be disappointing if the games actually look WORSE? Sadly I can see that happening. I really hope not but... I'm often disappointed :p For once I'd like to see something in the console sector knock my socks off. Hasn't happened since around the time the 360/PS3 launched. Meanwhile you look at something like Apple's iPad and i'm re-wowed by it all the time. I'm not even a fanboy.

I just heard that the store where I work will get 60 units total. (EU)

Considering the size and location of the store this is an extremely tiny shipment.
Tempted to keep my pre-order sealed just to flip it on eBay when demand goes crazy.

That's not tiny at all. Many Gamestops in the USA are getting way, way less. My local gamestop is getting 14 (13 deluxe, 1 regular) and maybe a couple more for walk-ins but nobody knows just how many that will be. I'd place that number under 10, maybe even closer to 5.

A nearby wal-mart is only getting 8.

60 is generous.

Brad announced that during the Nintendo World Report charity podcastathon on Saturday. Live stream will happen on actual launch day (yes, they're dragging themselves out of bed on a Sunday! lol).

Yeah, I gotta be honest I wasn't sure they would do a launch day stream because of it being a Sunday, good to see!

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Sixty seems a lot to me too, unless we're talking sixty for multiple stores in an entire shopping complex, or the area is obscenely busy 24/7. I mean, it's not a super ridiculous huge shipment, but having worked in an entertainment store in the middle of Melbourne, Australia's CBD getting sixty console units in a single shipment would be pretty damn solid.

Sixty through until the end of the year? That might be problematic, depending on popularity. But sixty at launch shouldn't be a problem.

As I've said in other threads, unless Nintendo has some genius blitzkrieg marketing scheme about to go boom I don't think many people will have a problem walking in and picking up units at launch. Wii was problematic because of the pre-launch popularity explosion. Midnight launches with massive lines. That buzz just isn't there for the Wii U, so you won't have every man and his dog after one.

I doubt it, or any game, will look worse than the ps3/360 version but I wouldn't be surprised if it was on par or only a minor graphical upgrade for now. From WiiU footage I have seen it looks like the WiiU lighting has been improved when compared to the ps3/360. Also, the availability of extra RAM helps with texture quality (of course using that RAM is up to the devs). I wouldn't be surprised if the first gen WiiU games are better than ps3/360 games graphically but only by a small amount. The second gen games, in my opinion, will look quite a bit better but they will be overshadowed by the ps4/720.

I haven't asked any store about exact numbers for Wii U, but I know my local GS only had 7 Xbox 360's for launch.

Again important to remember no one expects its LTD in a week.
The Weekly/Monthly sales figures we see are for tens of thousands of stores.

60 by itself is quite a lot; doubt they'll be too supply constrained.
Wii U isn't about selling huge this holiday, its about having a good launch.

2013 is where its at.

Will QA for food.
I have an early preorder in at the largest Futureshop in Toronto, so there's almost no way I'll miss on my Wii U. I'm still going to lineup a couple hours early (no midnight launch, argh) just so I don't have to wait behind a hundred other preorders.. or people hoping to get one of the non-preordered units.

So how is this expected to sell? At least compared to Wii's initial sales run? I know console sales aren't what they used to be but I'm curious about how much hype this thing has.

I was a huge Nintendo fanatic even through the Wii era, but I'm completely out of tune with the Wii U. And a lot of its functionality is still really confusing to me. I wonder what the casual passerby crowd will think of it if even I don't quite understand all that it can do. If you transfer a game over from your TV to your screen, what happens to the touch screen functionality you had before? Is that just gone? I don't even know Gaf.

Pre-orders are all sold out. I imagine it'll sell very well through the holiday at least.

As far as your second question that all depends on the game. Some games have off-TV modes, some don't, and it's entirely up to the developer as to what happens to touch screen functionality if they include an off screen mode.

I think it will basically sell what it ships in the U.S until at least March. The period after the launch buzz dies down is when we will get a sense of how the masses are receiving the system.

I wonder if there's any chance that the consoles themselves will be shipped pre-launch for those that ticked the ship-to-home option vs. store pickup.

Apparently I was the first preorder at my store for a Basic WiiU, so I better get priority over others when I go to pick it up. :I

This is no local Gamestop. This is one of the largest electronics stores in the country.

my local best buy had 83 wiis for launch day (vs 18 for ps3 lol). the line was full by 3AM.

not sure how many wii us my future shop will be getting.

I remember reading somewhere (I think Engadget) that they've been told to expect the update on Friday.

I hope nothing goes monumentally wrong with the update process. You think they would want a couple of weeks to test things with distribution to press units before release.

My ZombiU review prediction is a tad different: if 10 outlets give it 8.0 ~ 9.0 and say it's Wii's proof of concept du jour, and one outlet gives it a 3.0 and says it is utter crap, exactly like Red Steel, and Wii U has PS2 graphics,

There's going to be mass panic over the 3.0 review.

This is something is I have worrying about. A day one update is going to put a lot of strain of Nintendo's servers. Also, after everyone updates they will start messing with miiverse and playing online multiplayer games. I sure hope Nintendo is ready.

Gotcha. I was playing the Rayman Legends demo and found myself getting confused a lot when asked to switch between screens. Definitely a trippy experience for the first time. The technology is very interesting but it's definitely a mechanic that will go over people's heads unless they go out of their way to try it out.

Also in two years, a trimmed down GamePad will be released. Calling it now.

Probably, but I"m guessing that around that time they'll likely be introducing the ability to use two gamepads at the same time so it wouldn't be too big of a deal buying a new version of the gamepad.

I work at Best Buy and as of monday we haven't received any consoles. Will be glad to update when we do.

Highly doubtful. There's not much to trim down. You still need to hold it like a controller and thus you need the space around the screen.

Also, two-GamePad support is available right now. They just have to make games that use it. That won't take two years. Expect that later next year.
