Wii U Press Previews

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
VentureBeat: 10 things you don't know about the Wii U.

http://venturebeat.com/2012/11/13/10-things-you-dont-know-about-the-nintendo-wii-u/

Again, they're mostly things we GAFers already know, but I found these two points interesting:

The WiiPad has a better range than you think

For months, I’ve listened to Nintendo reps downplaying how far you can travel with the WiiPad. Players chatted excitedly about bathroom-gaming Zelda and Super Mario while on the throne only to have official statements crush their dreams. The pad won’t work through doors. Sorry.

Except it does. I own a two-story house, and my Wii U lives down in the man cave. Just for laughs, I walked away from it while playing New Super Mario Bros. U off the pad’s screen. The fidelity held together at 30 feet, so I headed upstairs … and then closed the door at the top. Still fine. Now, I couldn’t wander too much further, and indeed, putting any more walls between me and the console pretty much killed the signal. But hey, those bathroom breaks show some promise again.

It harmonizes

While I sat typing up notes with the new Wii U menu music playing away in the background, I suddenly noticed the song playing on my television differed slightly from what came out of the pad’s speakers. The two tracks harmonized into one piece, exactly as if they were recorded in stereo (which they probably were) and tuned for a forward/back setup instead of left/right.

I won’t pretend it’s balanced audio, or that the pad’s speakers aren’t a little tinny, or that serious audiophiles will be amused in the slightest. But it’s really a rather neat effect. I can see a savvy developer using that two-channel sound feature to their advantage — say, in Silent Hill-style horror game, where people on the TV tell you one thing and voices on your WiiPad tell you something very different

Speaking of the speaker, do we know if the WiiPad speaker is as atrocious as the one on Wiimote? I couldn't hear it in NYCC.

I had to turn off wiimote speakers because the quality was so low and distracting

mmmmmm, the harmonized menu music, THAT is the trademark Nintendo touch. That right there

oh and I can tell you definitively having gone to a WiiU experience event and frequenting Nintendo World in NYC lately that the speakers are nothing amazing, but certainly better than the Wiimote speaker

It sounded fine at the Wii U Experience in Atlanta; granted, it's not Beats by Dre quality or anything, but they produced clear audio without any distortion, unlike whatever they packed in the Wiimote.

Around E3 I heard it was 3DS quality, but no confirmation. Considering you actually play games on the Gamepad, I'm sure it is at least a large step-up from the atrociousness of the Wiimote speaker.

Most of this stuff isn't something I actually don't have an issue with, but just an observation of the compromises Nintendo has made. Strangely enough, some of it is due to keeping costs down yet Nintendo is still selling the game system at a loss. Just some quick stuff I thought of:

-We can't play virtual console games on the GamePad

- You can play Wii U games in HD, but not on the GamePad.

(it's just funny how it will be in SD on Nintendo's first HD machine, Sony would have never had done this)

- GamePad display is LCD, not OLED.

- GamePad & Wii U Pro CC have rumble, but its reportedly weak

- Wii U gamepad can be played in some rooms, but not all due to limited wireless range and it lacks multitouch.

- Wii U is powerful but the quality of its next-gen third-party multiplatform support is still in question. It won't be as bad as it was on the Wii U, but Nintendo is still willing to take a risk here.

The Wii U interface for creating one doesn’t differ much from the Wii’s, though the options are just different enough that I couldn’t make as good a likeness of myself.
Wat? They didn't actually remove any features, did they? How is this possible?

I'm not really that restricted. What did you want to know?

Does the wiiU make any sound while running the game disk(comparable those old xbox 360s when they ran games made a loud sound where you knew the disk was spinning and the console was working and for exaggeration sound like an airport hanger )
and while charging the gamepad through the AC, does it still charge while playing games or does it get just enough of a charge to stay on while playing games (i think the vita does this while you play games)

Actually I think in one of the Iwata Asks they mentioned that a Mii created on the Wii U can't go back to a Wii since they've added in more options on the Wii U Mii Creator.
Yeah, I heard that too. So, in theory, a Mii you recreate on Wii U can only be improved due to the extra options. This guy suggests the opposite.

Most of the above are hardly worth commenting on. Nit picking.
Most of them are not things the Wii U 'can't do' but things they've actively not done.

VC Games are VC games, do we know if WiiU purposed ones won't have any functionality with it?
Pretty sure its just cause it goes into 'Wii Mode'

Gamepad not being OLED is hardly surprising. Its a side function and Nintendo aren't going to spend a huge amount on it.
The price would rise too high with each resolution upgrade. Not to mention every boost in res will suck up more ram for the secondary menu (or whatever).

Wii U having a wireless range is not shocking. Its life. Welcome.

Third Party support isn't relevant to what it can or can't do. Its a future thats unknown for all consoles.

None of these remove features except Multi-Touch. Which Nintendo just seems to have removed likely for cost purposes.
So yeah the WiiU looks pretty all round strong, so the 'what it can't do' just seems like lazy 'ugh Nintendo!' criticism to me.

EDIT:
- GamePad & Wii U Pro CC have rumble, but its reportedly weak

Again, not something it can't do.
-------------------------------------------------------

I wouldn't get hopes up for the game pad volume, XL is still atrocious but its functional. Revelations without earphones is ridiculous though. The gun shots are so fucking tinnish (same on the original 3DS too).

Wii Mote was always disappointing but this should be far better than that.

So the wife just decided she wants a Wii U. Anyone have best guesses on what are the odds of being able to walk into a Best Buy Sunday morning and grabbing one? I've never bought a console on day one.

why not go to the midnight release if your store has one, but if thats not an option... i'd like to believe you can get a white wiiU, the deluxe.. you might have more trouble with but if you're there in the morning.. shouldnt have too much of a problem, Unless nintendo decides to promote this thing crazy in the next few days. and if they dont have it there, check meijers/walmart/target or frys(if thats availible where you live... wish i had them over here in michigan) but if none of those places have it... then ebay at $600 or something.. cause i wont have any ideas.

Is Mario good so far? :p

If you've been playing, how does it compare to others in the 2D series? Sorry this isn't really about the console but I need impressions. :3

All the New Super Mario Bros games have sort of blended together in my head, but this one takes a LOT from SMB3 and SMW. You'll have to wait for my review to hear more. ;) Check out Kotaku on Thursday afternoon.

How does it taste?

Better than an iPad.

I haven't noticed any sounds. It does still charge while playing games.

thanks for the quick response jschreier.
My final question is this, for any multiplat games you have played on the wiiU did they run or look as good/fast as an xbox 360 title that was installed to the hard drive? I heard that the wiiU's read rate(whatever the thing is with disks) is better then the ps3's. Just wanted to see your opinion (since i dont think there is an Install disk option like the 360... i got a huge external which i would use for this thing if needed, sucks online isnt an option yet for you guys to try out)

A guy on the Bombcast said a little shortcut is if you have a Costco membership, they normally have a nice stockpile of launch systems. He said that's where he gets all his launch systems, surprisingly :p

Thanks guys. I'll obviously give it a shot. I was just worried that in a harmonizing type sequence as described, it'd be really messed up if it had a speaker even near the down range of the wiimote one.

Listening to the bombcast... I think it would be worth it to pick up a spare Wii U AC Adapter that will sit permanently beside my bed.

why the fuck can't we play virtual console games on that controller ; _ ;

The 3DS speaker is not good at all, though. I don't know what "fine to the average gamer" means, since audio quality is a objective measurement and one doesn't need to go far to understand when audio quality is low.

Not saying the WiiPad speaker is bad (won't say until I experience), but I think even many "average gamers" would recognize the low quality of bad audio.

Warriors orochi 3 hyper allows for it, or at the very least in multiplayer mode it does, heck its in the trailer as a feature.

I get the feeling that our Wii virtual console purchases will continue to live on as our Wii virtual console games, and nothing more. They won't exist on the Wii U outside of Wii mode.

As time goes on, Nintendo will slowly update their Wii U shop with more and more virtual console titles, all with full gamepad support.

In other words, if you want to play the Virtual Console games on the gamepad screen, you'll have to buy them again (or for the first time). Maybe they'll be cool and add support in the future... but I doubt it.

Because native Wii U VC emulation doesn't exist yet.

Like I said before, CODBLOPS2 supports it; it's listed on the back of its box.

Ah, I forgot that but I meant to add it.

So BLOPS2 and Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper. Is that it? I'll make the thread soon and I'll be sure to keep it constantly updated (I'll try to at least)

I've had a thought about the reason wii VC titles are being kept in wii mode, could it be a consequence of the filthy no good pirates? Weren't people with hacked wiis able to copy and download any VC games they wanted? If so could they being kept in wii mode to stop people getting yet more free games and therefore us honest gamers are getting slightly shafted

That's how I expect it will work. Wii stuff will always remain Wii stuff, but Wii U VC games will release in the future.

(it's just funny how it will be in SD on Nintendo's first HD machine, Sony would have never had done this)

You realise to keep the same zero lag system you'd have to be able to stream 2.3x as much data in the same time frame. I imagine that wouldn't be cheap.

Not to mention that SD at 6" is a higher DPI than the original iPad which is more than adequate.

I hope nothing goes monumentally wrong with the update process. You think they would want a couple of weeks to test things with distribution to press units before release.

One MAJOR thing on my wishlist for all three next gen consoles is some sort of brick protection. I crap myself every time I update my firmware on my PS3 and 360. The best thing about the Homebrew scene on the Wii is BootMii which pretty much makes your Wii unbrickable in the case of a power cut.

These days there's no excuse for platform holders not to have some sort brick protection in place for this sort of expensive equipment.

as anyone watched the IGN review of Ninja Gaiden?

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge might be the polar opposite of the usual Nintendo fare. The ‘M’ rating on the box is not a joke, what with the hyper-fast ninja action title’s unending display of severed limbs and decapitated heads. It’s fantastic to see this kind of hardcore gamer’s game on a Nintendo console – and at the Wii U’s launch, no less – and you can forget much of what you may have heard about the original release of this game earlier this year on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s far from perfect and best viewed with “launch goggles” on, but Razor’s Edge’s unflinching action and unabashed violence is a great sign for the Wii U as a core gamer’s platform.

7.6

Holy shit that part you quoted alone is horrible. What the hell IGN
