Wii U: a 2 TB HDD is a waste.

If you plug in a USB drive, does the system use that for everything, or does it use your internal storage first? Ideally I think I'd like saves to be kept on internal storage or at least able to be backed up somewhere in case of drive problems.

I'm going to have a rummage rough my drawers, I must have an old USB drive lying around with an obsolete backup of a laptop I don't have anymore. That'll do

You can freely move software between the internal flash and the external USB device freely through the Data Management menu.

You shouldn't come close to write limits and it won't be a POS like any current HDD on the market.

Why do you care about write limits though? The cap there will be your internet connection or optical drive, (where you're getting the data from) other than that, you really don't have a need for high write speeds. Saving game progress is usually very quick and requires very little data.

Read speed on the other hand...

If the full game is downloaded and installed on external hard drive, would it lose speed/loading performance because of USB 2.0 speed?

Or is it fast as internal hard drive?

Has Nintendo said anything about downloadable demos? My 120GB Xbox 360 hard drive and 250GB PS3 hard drive are almost full because I like to keep all the demos I have downloaded.

Will the Wii U offer any system backup options? Are digital purchases linked to the hardware or to your account?

Purchases are managed by NNID. We don't know how transferable that'll be, if at all.
That would be terrible, in that case I'd prolly advise to get two 1TB HDDs and make backups with tools like clonezilla (bit by bit copy, regardless of the encrypted file system).

I hear what you're saying, but once you've bought a 1TB drive, isn't the cost of a 2TB drive like an extra 10-20%? Might as well just pay a little extra, to be sure you won't run out of space.

Not with an external drive! Does it render the entire disk unusable in other devices?

On PS3 you can't put actual games on any externally connected drive, so where is your point? For games you would have to use the internal HDD, which means the external HDD for Wii U is just like the internal HDD for PS3.

Maybe not flimsy, but BR's are kind of floppy, not as stiff as CD's/DVD's, or at least some are.
Yeah, they really aren't. Like, at all. Floppy? Seriously? They bend a little, if that's what you mean.

Bluray's are incredibly durable. I don't think I've ever bought a pre owned PS3 game where the disc was scratched.

I have some doubts about this image in the sense that I am unsure if the Wii U takes over the HDD completely, or, if you partition it into two HDD's it takes over only the partitioned disk that you select.

Nintendo took the effort to show how disk space is allocated with small coloured balls, so maybe they're just not confident going into details on how to partition disks with its user base. I wouldn't bank on that one just yet, lets wait until it can actually be confirmed :)

Edit: Beaten the next two posts ;)

I'd be interested to throw the external drive on my Solaris box and see what Nintendo are doing to make it non-PC compat.

Very very slim chance that they created a whole new operating system, so my best guess would be that they've either taken something like FAT and changed a few fundamental things like logical sector positions in it to make it non-recognisable to a PC, or used something that is non-supported by popular operating systems, such as UFS.

This system is going to cost a fortune just in separate add ons

Coming from someone who sold their Wii years ago..hell yes.

Im gonna have to buy:
3 nunchuck+wiimotes ($60 each)
External HDD ($90+)

That's already $150 investment in addition to the console + games.

Blah, whatever. Still fucking buying it.

smh. There's just no convincing people of what's been stated clearly. Try it out for yourself on Sunday.
I'm still not really sure what your point is. Are you simply saying that it'll take ages to full 1TB, so buying 2 is a waste?

I don't subscribe to this notion, because a 2TB is only marginally more expensive that 1TB, so to save yourself a few quid, it doesn't seem worth it.

I think he meant me. I understand his frustration. But I'm just being optimistic that its just Nintendo being obtuse and maybe a bit disingenuous.

No. I've added this in bold to the OP.

Btw, IGN dissagrees with you:

IGN said:
USB Hard Drives

By default, and barring an update that Nintendo says is coming in the future, Wii U will only allow one USB drive to be connected at a time. These drives cannot be disconnected while Wii U is powered on, and the system will support and read up to 2TB of storage.

Drives that will be used by Wii U must be formatted by the system's Data Management system, meaning you can't use the drive with a PC without partitioning. However all data can be moved internally and externally through Wii U's OS.

I don't know if this has been tested internally at IGN with their review console of if they're assuming as the rest of us here. We'll know soon enough, though. :)

yeah but I'm sure smash 4 will utilized dual layer discs and I want my 48 GB of goodness on a TB hard drive.

"As external HDDs formatted for the Wii U won't be inter-operable with PCs"

they won't?

this will most likely be copy protection. maybe you can do something with partitioning. No idea.

I'm waiting to see on wii U, sounds like razors/blades model of extracting cash from everyone.

It will bite them in the ass. WiiU was looking great all along but the lack of USB3.0 is by far the biggest dissapointment since the speculation threads.

yes, historically the use of cheaper established technology has always been Nintendo's downfall.

Thank you for pointing this out. WiiU fans getting way ahead of themselves imo.

It's not so much "I won't use it so nobody else will" more than it is "why would you do that?"

To use an external USB storage device, select Format External USB Storage Device from Data Management in the Settings menu. This will format it for use with the Wii U, a format different from that used by PCs and other devices, on which it will no longer be usable. Please understand ahead of time that a hard disk used as an external USB storage device cannot be used on PCs and other devices.

Ofcourse that is a waste.. I think even the people who buy it ANYWAY know this.

Not that I need to start a 2TB HDD Defense Force of Dummies

I am one of those people. Months ago reading this thread would have made my purchase munch more conservative. You look at the numbers it makes good sense that you won't even need 25% of that space in the next 5 years.

Still with the difference in the prices for these things they are priced in such a way that the next one doubles the space for the price+shipping+tax, in extreme cases about $20-$40 dollars more you can supersize. If I was going to spend $60 or $80 anyway.... well...

The SUPERSIZE ME mentality won out :( I was brainwashed I tell you!

no a big deal, now I won't even have to think twice about fridge management.

here is my HDD on amazon

1TB = $95.95
2TB = $109.99
500GB = Out of Stock ($79)

It may be a proprietary file format, is why it needs to format the drive no matter what
They can't use NTFS, HFS+, FAT32, or EXFAT without paying a license, so yeah, it's going to be proprietary.

The 360 would let you set aside a certain portion for regular use though. You can't do that here?
Probably not, but...

Won't there be any workaround for this?
...you can probably partition it yourself. Might be tricky, might not.

USB 2.0 is already 6 times faster than the Wii U's optical drive.

Hm. For me there actually isn't a huge practical difference between 32GB and 2TB of Wii storage (it took me years to finally fill my 20GB 360, and only because I wanted to install retail games to disk), but there is a pretty big difference between 8GB and 32GB. To spring on the Deluxe set or not...

it's a no-brainer surely? For starters it's actually 3GB useable vs 27GB, then there is Nintendoland, sensor bar, some useful stands and the years worth of eshop loyalty discounts.
