Far Cry 3 Review Thread

PC gamers be warned : this game will be quite brutal on your machine

I posted this in another thread but I believe people who plan on purchasing the game on PC might find it useful :

Eesh I have a 460FTW. It is going to eat my machine alive.

FC3 being part of AMD's gaming program I doubt Nvidia have had access to the game and we can be certain that they are already working on WHQL drivers.

It runs very well for AMD users out of the box as many "Gaming Evolved" titles.

nvidia did have access to the game and there's already a profile in their drivers (which has been updated a couple of times as well).

Oh great I heard on another forum (guru3d) that when a game was part of AMD's program Nvidia could not work on the game until its release.
I read the same thing regarding the "TWIMTBP" program.

Tearing might be a capture issue.

Framerate not though. Disappointed by the water after seeing it on pc.

I wish ubisoft spent some time on the DX11 version like Crytek does, there is really nothing to justify such bad performance

At least I was expecting some water like Crysis 1, would have looked so good in a tropical jungle like the one in this game

45 min of PS3 footage. OPM calls it the best looking Open world game on the PS3. Hyped!

Thanks, been looking for a decent chunk of PS3 footage of this game. Looks good to me, as long as it runs similarly to FC2 (pretty well considering it's open world) I'm good.

And wow, I've been anticipating the game and all those glowing reviews make me more eager to get my hands on it.

Looks like I'll have to use the US VPN at work to be able to buy myself a copy of this. Thanks to Ubisoft for removing this from UK Steam store.

Isn't that modded Crysis 1 though? I don't remember the water doing all that when I played through it.

Game is sounding really good though.

Wow, didn't see this coming. Guess i still have one more game to buy this year. usually reviews don't mean much to me, but i liked the second one and you really can't ignore scores like these. especially that 10 from eurogamer.

wow, the reviews have knocked me for six. I didn't expect it to review so well, seems it's now a must buy but with it coming out the same day as wii u, it might not get as much attention as it seemingly deserves.

My common problem with shooters: playing on tv but console vs. playing with mouse and keyboard but 15" screen and weak gpu (540M GT)

Woah at the review scores. Any change PC retail version would net you a Steam code? (=Have they talked about Steamworks?)

So I would pick this up on PC, but looking at those performance charts I'm scared to.

Is the Xbox the way to go for this one?

What are your specs ?

There is no need to run the game maxed out you can always tone down a few settings and you will still end up with a beautiful looking game on your hands.

But seriously Ubisoft, what have they been trying to do by releasing ridiculous specs ?
It seems the real recommended specs are the "extreme" ones.

No, Uplay title. But of course available on Steam.

Was thinking Ass3 after I'm done with Halo4 and Blops2 but Gaf and my brother have me moving away from Ass3. Sounds great but I didn't like Far Cry 2. Hmmm? Biggest complaint was the gun play in 2 but some reviews mention it's much better here.

This game was part of AMD's developer outreach program? It's a rare occasion to see my card on top of the benchmark pile for a new release. Hopefully my i7 930 is still up to the task.

Before making that choice, get a sense of how he game scales. Console settings are going to be low to medium settings at 1280x720 max and never go above 30 fps.

Well unless I'm reading that chart wrong it says the game is maxed out but no AA? I'm guessing you can just turn down some things down and you'll (me too!) be fine.

Yeah, no surprise here AMD cards perform very well. Same thing with other "Gaming Evolved" titles (Hitman, Deus Ex, Sleeping Dogs).

Bioshock Infinite and the next Tomb Raider are also part of AMD's gaming program.

Was just about to post this. The chart is max settings so I'm sure there's a couple settings you can lower for a negligible loss in visuals but a nice gain in frame rate.

As long as I can get ~23-25 fps avg @ 1080p with most settings high I'll be happy (5770 here).

Those framerates are really strange. The game doesn't look that good or that technically advanced to warrant that heavy of performance hit. :\

Probably not a good idea, you'll get your steam account permanently banned for using a vpn or a proxy to buy from a different region. They changed the ToS not too long ago to include this. Just activating games earlier seems to be no big deal though, but buying is a big no no.

Yeah, going to wait for GAF impressions post-release. I'd guess this game will have a PC performance thread.

Loved the shit out of FarCry 2 and this game had me at "open world stealth", so I've gone form zero hype for any upcoming games, to a definite pickup for this one. The co-op might make this one an Xbox pickup, but like you guys correctly point out, the PC, even at lower settings should provide a better experience over all. We'll see.

Oh man, my 560ti is already low tier =(

So Ubi weren't lying about their internal scores. Suddenly Far Cry 3 is on my radar. Yeah, I'm scared too.

Well, I have an HD6850 with an i5-3450.

It wonr run great (or Im gonna have to use a smaller resolution), but it will still beat consple versions.

Also, the price is smaller than console version which is always a plus :)

Not too surprised by the praise. This was my most anticipated game of the year and thought it looked really fantastic. A couple of those scores from certain sites are definitely higher than I thought they'd be though. Good to see it doing well.

It's a huge open world. Lots of physics and dynamic AI and all kinds of shit probably going on, I dunno. To layfolk (us) we see it as you described but I'm sure it's more complicated than that.

What in the world? Is this real life? This is modded Crysis 1 right? The water looks amazing...

Why are y'all looking at benchmarks without AA?

This is the one that matters. Maxed out with 4xMSAA and 1080p.

I am going with maxed out with 4XMSAA and 1600p so 15 fps here I come!

Global illumination and contact hardening soft shadows are very demanding.

Even vanilla water looks fantastic in Crysis.
