Far Cry 3 Review Thread

Glad I updated my videocard last month from a geforce 460 to a 660ti. Game so far looks like a far better sequel to Far Cry 1 than Far Cry 2.

Woah, this must've really come around since the previews. I was really skeptical on it because of the poor co-op showing at E3, but it really seems to have gotten way better.

Will give it a shot during the holiday sale.

Wasn't that the coop showing where 4 people were on stage trying to be all tactical and stuff? That was hilarious.

And this is my one big beef with PC gaming.

Happens with consoles too. AC3 runs like ass, and Halo 4's framerate has plummeted several times for me.

That said, this is the only major release with an insane demand this year, but it's a Far Cry game. I kind of expected it to be. Crysis 3 will also probably ask for a lot to be maxed out. The good news is that high will still look pretty damn good.

Why do I feel this is one of those games where you can tone down the over blown SSAO a notch for no noticeable visual difference and gain ~10 frames.

I am so psyched we can place enemy AI into our user created maps! Sucks it seems you can't then share them, I don't understand why they wouldn't let you, but even so Ill have a lot of fun with it I'm sure.

So that benchmarking write up is quite confusing.

What kind of performance can I expect with a i5-3670K, 8 gig ram, GTX670?
This is EXACTLY my setup.

I imagine we will be the recomended specs and above. So we'll be just fine.

I'll be perfectly fine with that :p

Can anyone comment on the damage model in Far Cry 3?

Far Cry 2 gave you the option to "wound" enemies. Example: Shoot a guy in the leg and he screams out to his buddies for help.

Is this still in Far Cry 3?

Saw the max PC footage. It looks good but not mindblowing. About what I'd expect from a good PC port of a console game.

It's not anything that I've seen in videos although to be fair most if not all of the videos have not focused too much on enemies and their specific behaviors. All I can go on is how a lot of the other things like that in FC2 have been removed and assume that too has been removed.

Is it just me or are the graphics, for the lack of a better word....muddy?

Cant really explain what I mean. The lighting looks ok, but the filtering seems off. Compared to playing crysis it doesn't seem as organic.

maybe its just the shitty compression of the youtube vids.

Game hasn't come out, so unless if there's a reviewer here who we can ask, we won't know this until we get our own hands on it. I did love sniping a dude on purpose in the leg, tail another dude, and take them both out with a big grin across my face.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

You can use HDAO and HBAO for much less thick AO but worse performance.
From the benchmark:

What time is it?
Watching this again and the game seems to run fine on PS3. Also, it looks like they improved the controls too. Far Cry 2 had some terrible analog stick acceleration, where you would push the stick to aim and keep pushing but the movement didn't seem to register and then suddenly the movement kicked in.

But in this video the controls look quick and responsive.

The controls are my biggest fear when it comes to this game. Far Cry 2 was unplayable for me because of the sluggishness.

Was on the fence with this, but the last few videos and this thread have sold me. Should be a good time!

Yeah the only thing is the so called "wounding" system didnt work as planned. Since the devs apparently had made it "random" so it wasnt a 100% thing even if you aimed and hit your targets "leg" for example.

Some of the animations could use some work. Grenade throw animation in particular is a joke. Shotgun on the other hand looks nice and heavy.

Really looking forward to this game. Won't get it on day one cause I still need to complete AC3 but will definitely get it before Christmas.

Lots of people seem to have the game, but can someone answer this:

Can you turn off HUD elements?

edit: checked last page... apparently NO

sorry if this has been answered, do we know if the 360 version runs in full 1080p and whether it keeps a consistent framerate?

I am just joking with you. The answer is no, though the 360, of course, can upscale it to that resolution. For your second answer I would wait for Digital Foundry to do their face-off.

Ha, thanks for the responses - I'm finally upgrading to a 1080p television, so I'm trying to find out the best examples for HD gaming. I WILL be hooking up my PC to it, although I'm just running a GTX 560 ti, so figuring out if 360 or PC/comfy couch mode is the best way to play. Thinking that even with the PC, I won't be able to run in high or anything, but will at least get full res and can tweak the graphics. My proc also blows, still running a Core 2 Duo overclocked to a whopping 3ghz.

A 560Ti blows a PS3/360 out of the water, no matter the game. I run most recent games in 1080p, max settings, 60 fps whereas you get sub-720p, low-mid settings and sub-30 fps on the consoles. Don't underestimate how incredibly underpowered the consoles are nowadays compared to even a mid-range card.

A really good game that's let down by several narrative missteps and a patronising fixation on "content."
What does that mean?

I can decifer the text, but I don't understand the complaint.

"It patronises you with too much content."

Uh, wut?

Just from reading that sentence, it sounds like what Assassin's Creed does: give you a shit ton of meaningless stuff to do, trusting that you will do it not because it's fun or because it gives you something worthwhile, but because it fills that bar up and makes those numbers go up. Then you call it "addictive" and give it 9/10. In other words, exactly what I feared they had done. It'll be interesting to see if it's true.

I do think Assassin's Creed has a lot of pointless busywork that boil down to going to a location and pressing a button, but the missions in this game look like they're much more involved and varied. The hunting miisions seem amazing..

Money seems to be a common reward for missions and exploration, I hope you don't end up overflowing with it, Far Cry 2 diamonds always seemed valuable.

I really hope you're right. Now to hope for a HUD mod...
